Luigi Mangione Will Not Face Death Penalty; Judge In Murder Case Tosses Two Federal …

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Luigi Mangione learned today that he will not be fighting for his life when his case goes to trial.

Mangione was arrested late last year for the murder of UnitedHealthCare CEO Bryan Thompson.

He’s currently behind bars awaiting trial, and he learned today that he’s no longer at risk of receiving the death penalty.

Luigi Mangione is escorted by police as he arrives for a hearing as his lawyers push to have his state murder charges dismissed in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, at Manhattan Criminal Court on September 16, 2025 in New York City.

According to a report from NBC News, U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett dismissed two of the four federal counts against Mangione: murder through the use of a firearm, and a related firearms offense.

The former charge was the only one against Mangione that carried a potential death sentence.

He’ll still be tried for two federal stalking counts, which each carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In rendering her decision, Judge Garnett explained that the murder through the use of a firearm charge did not fit the case, as it had to be used in tandem with a “crime of violence,” which the stalking charge against Mangione is not.

In this handout photo released by the Altoona Police Department, Luigi Mangione is seen in a holding cell after being taken into custody on December 9, 2024 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

She admitted that her decision may come off as a bit arcane, but she insisted that she’s following the letter of the law.

“The analysis contained in the balance of this opinion may strike the average person — and indeed many lawyers and judges — as tortured and strange, and the result may seem contrary to our intuitions about the criminal law,” Garnett wrote.

“But it represents the Court’s committed effort to faithfully apply the dictates of the Supreme Court to the charges in this case,” the federal judge continued, adding, “The law must be the Court’s only concern.”

In comments delivered outside the courtroom, Mangione attorney Karen Agnifilo praised the judge’s “incredible decision.”

“We’re all very relieved,” Agnifilo added.

The prosecution previously dropped its terrorism charges against Magione.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him.

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Janelle Brown: Leaving ‘Sister Wives’ for Good After Season 20?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Will Janelle Brown be back?

After Season 20, some fans weren’t sure if TLC would keep the show going.

Sister Wives will return for Season 21.

But after Janelle’s statements about leaving the show, will she be part of it?

We’re getting Season 21, but …

In recent months, Janelle Brown has made multiple social media posts about leaving Sister Wives.

Not an announcement. Not a promise or a threat. Just … touching upon the topic.

“Leaving the show… leaving a marriage… starting over at an age where everyone expects you to have it all figured out,” she penned in one post, as we reported.

Janele continued at the time: “I kept looking at the pieces and thinking something must be wrong with me.”

In another post, she wrote: “After the cameras went away, I realized how much of my identity had been shaped by what people thought they knew and rebuilding after that … honestly it takes time.”

This week, Mykelti Brown and her husband, Tony Padron, were guests on the Growing Up in Polygamy podcast.

With so much uncertainty, she was able to confirm that TLC viewers will be getting a Season 21 of her fractured family’s show.

“There will be guaranteed one more season for sure,” Mykelti dished.

“Beyond more than one,” she admitted. “I have no idea.”

It is possible that TLC doesn’t know, either.

Will Janelle Brown be part of Season 21?

According to Mykelti, who would know, “Janelle will be a part” of Season 21.

However, she stressed that this season has some key differences from seasons past.

“I will say that none of the parents have the same filming schedule that they used to have,” Mykelti cautioned.

“For the last 15-16 years, it’s been two weeks of filming, two weeks off,” she specified.

Mykelti explained: “But this last six months or so, the filming has been very, very miniscule. It’s sporadic. So, the filming has been less.”

“But Janelle will be part of the new season coming out,” Mykelti then emphasized.

How does Janelle feel about that?

Well … that’s a tough question for anyone to answer. Even Janelle herself.

“I think Janelle, some days she’s like, ‘Yes, let’s do five more seasons!’” Mykelti characterized.

She continued: “And sometimes she’s like, ‘I’m done. I just want to focus on my grandbabies.’”

She’s of two minds about staying on the show (and that’s okay)

Mykelti continued to characterize how Janelle’s feelings on reality TV ebb and flow.

“‘I want to focus on Taeda Farms. I want to focus on my life in North Carolina. I want to move on,’” she described.

She reasoned: “So I think she goes back and forth.”

That is very reasonable.

As for fans … as much as they love seeing her, they also want for her to be happy. Janelle’s fans are likely as conflicted as the woman herself.

View Drive residents asked to gauge interest in federal buyout program

This drone image provided by the City and Borough of Juneau shows flooding from a release of water and snowmelt at Mendenhall Glacier covered some roads and threatened homes along the Mendenhall River in Juneau, Alaska on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025. (City and Borough of Juneau via AP)

NOTN- City leaders are asking View Drive homeowners, the area hit hardest by glacial lake outburst flooding, to weigh in on whether they want to pursue a voluntary federal buyout program.

The City and Borough of Juneau is gauging interest in a potential buyout through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service Emergency Watershed Protection program, (NRCS) which helps communities recover from natural disasters by purchasing at-risk properties and restoring the land.

Under the program, eligible properties would be acquired at fair market value, followed by environmental review, demolition and site restoration. NRCS would cover 75% of total project costs, but Juneau would be responsible for the remaining 25%.

The non-federal match is estimated at about $6 million if all 18 eligible structures on View Drive take part.

City Manager Katie Koester said the city wants to know whether homeowners would be willing to help assemble that non- federal match, either through their own resources or with help from nonprofits and other non-federal sources, asking owners through an informal ballot, to indicate whether they would be willing to participate if that cost share were required, though responses are not binding.

“The Assembly really hasn’t received any official communication from View Drive residents on whether or not they are even interested in participating in the program,” Koester said. “The first important step is sending them an informal ballot to gauge actual interest in participating.”

View Drive is considered one of the neighborhoods most vulnerable to annual flooding caused by glacial lake outburst floods, as it sits just outside the reach of the HESCO barriers.

Juneau officials have discussed buyouts as one possible option for residents, particularly as flooding frequency and severity increase, though Koester stressed that whether or not the city goes through with the buy-out program, officials are still committed to an enduring solution.

“I just want to make sure that the public knows that it is the number one priority for the City of Juneau, to find a permanent solution to the flooding, not just for View Drive, but for the entire valley.” She said.

Koester said the Assembly is seeking to understand whether enough property owners would participate to justify moving forward.

Participation in the program would be entirely voluntary, and Koester emphasized that not every property owner would need to opt in for the project to move forward.

“‘It’s totally feasible that four people want to participate, and we move forward, and the rest of the neighborhood does not participate.”

Property owners have until Feb. 16 to return their ballots to the city’s engineering division, those results from residents are expected to be presented at the assembly’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 23.
