Public broadcasting faces major cuts while Alaska tsunami warning highlights its value

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., walks to his office from the Senate chamber as Senate Republicans vote on President Donald Trump’s request to cancel about $9 billion in foreign aid and public broadcasting spending, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.(AP Photo/Rod Lamkey, Jr.)

AP- The Senate has passed about $9 billion in federal spending cuts requested by President Donald Trump, including deep reductions to public broadcasting and foreign aid, moving forward on one of the president’s top priorities despite concerns from several Republican senators.

The legislation, which now moves to the House, would have a tiny impact on the nation’s rising debt but could have major ramifications for the targeted spending, from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to U.S. food aid programs abroad.

It also could complicate efforts to pass additional spending bills this year, as Democrats and even some Republicans have argued they are ceding congressional spending powers to Trump with little idea of how the White House Office of Management and Budget would apply the cuts.

The 51-48 vote came after 2 a.m. Thursday after Democrats sought to remove many of the proposed rescissions during 12 hours of amendment votes. None of the Democratic amendments were adopted.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Republicans were using the president’s rescissions request to target wasteful spending. He said it is a “small but important step for fiscal sanity that we all should be able to agree is long overdue.”

But Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the bill “has a big problem — nobody really knows what program reductions are in it.”

Collins and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, joined Democrats in voting against the legislation. Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the former Republican leader, had voted against moving forward with the bill in a Tuesday procedural vote, saying he was concerned the Trump White House wanted a “blank check,” but he ultimately voted for final passage.

The effort to claw back a sliver of federal spending comes after Republicans also muscled Trump’s big tax and spending cut bill to approval without any Democratic support. The Congressional Budget Office has projected that measure will increase future federal deficits by about $3.3 trillion over the coming decade.

Lawmakers clash over cuts to public radio and TV stations

Along with Democrats, Collins and Murkowski both expressed concerns about the cuts to public broadcasting, saying they could affect important rural stations in their states.

Murkowski said in a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday that the stations are “not just your news — it is your tsunami alert, it is your landslide alert, it is your volcano alert.”

Less than a day later, as the Senate debated the bill, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the remote Alaska Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings on local public broadcasting stations that advised people to get to higher ground.

The situation is “a reminder that when we hear people rant about how public broadcasting is nothing more than this radical, liberal effort to pollute people’s minds, I think they need to look at what some of the basic services are to communities,” Murkowski said.

The legislation would claw back nearly $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which represents the full amount it’s due to receive during the next two budget years.

The corporation distributes more than 70% of the money to more than 1,500 locally operated public television and radio stations, with much of the remainder assigned to National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service to support national programming.

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., said he secured a deal from the White House that some funding administered by the Interior Department would be repurposed to subsidize Native American public radio stations in about a dozen states.

But Kate Riley, president and CEO of America’s Public Television Stations, a network of locally owned and operated stations, said that deal was “at best a short-term, half-measure that will still result in cuts and reduced service at the stations it purports to save, while leaving behind all other stations, including many that serve Native populations.”

Republicans face a Friday deadline

Collins attempted to negotiate a last minute change to the package that would have reduced the cuts by about $2.5 billion and restored some of the public broadcasting and global health dollars, but she abandoned the effort after she didn’t have enough backing from her Republican colleagues in the Senate and the House.

The House has already shown its support for the president’s request with a mostly party line 214-212 vote, but since the Senate amended the bill, it will have to go back to the House for another vote.

The bill must be signed into law by midnight Friday for the proposed rescissions to kick in. If Congress doesn’t act by then, the spending stands.

Murkowski, Senate colleagues urge release of education funds

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has joined a group of Republican senators urging the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to release federal education funds already approved by Congress for the 2025 fiscal year.

In a letter sent to OMB Director Russell Vought, the senators asked the agency to fully implement the Fiscal Year 2025 Full-Year Continuing Resolution Act, which includes funding for several education programs supporting students, educators and adult learners.

“The decision to withhold this funding is directly contrary to President Trump’s goal of returning K-12 education to the states,” the senators wrote. “This funding goes directly to states and local school districts, where local leaders decide how this funding is spent, because as we know, local communities know how to best serve students and families. Withholding this funding denies states and communities the opportunity to pursue localized initiatives to support students and their families.”

The funding in question includes grants for Supporting Effective Instruction, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Student Support and Academic Enrichment, English Language Acquisition, Migrant Education, and Adult Basic and Literacy Education, including integrated civics and language programs.

Murkowski and her colleagues argue the funds are essential for local school districts and adult education providers, especially those that support English learners, workforce training, and after-school care. They also emphasized the bipartisan nature of these programs, writing, ” We share your concern about taxpayer money going to fund radical left-wing programs. However, we do not believe that is happening with these funds. These funds go to support programs that enjoy longstanding, bipartisan support like after-school and summer programs that provide learning and enrichment opportunities for school aged children which also enables their parents to work and contribute to local economies.”

The letter was also signed by Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Susan Collins (R-ME), John Boozman (R-AR), Katie Boyd Britt (R-AL), Deb Fischer (R-NE), John Hoeven (R-ND), Jim Justice (R-WV), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and M. Michael Rounds (R-SD).

The senators said they welcome further collaboration with OMB and Education Secretary Linda McMahon, writing, ” We want to see students in our states and across the country thrive, whether they are adult learners, students who speak English as a second language, or students who need after-school care so that their parents can work. We believe you share the same goal.”
They urged Vought to reverse the decision and release the congressionally approved funding without further delay.

A full copy of the letter is available on Sen. Murkowski’s official website, or on her Facebook page.

Jenelle Evans Blasts ‘Delusional’ Amber Portwood, May Actually Be Right for …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jenelle Evans is not a fan of Amber Portwood ranting and raving on TikTok Live.

No one is — except perhaps for Amber and her most devoted supporters.

It is a sad, sad day when you lose the high ground to Jenelle.

But Amber has said things so abhorrent that they’ve even shocked a Teen Mom alum who’s even worse than she is. What is this world coming to?

Jenelle Evans offers her account of her two most recent breakups.

Imagine getting called out by Jenelle Evans, of all people

On Tuesday, July 15, Jenelle Evans took to TikTok Live to put Amber Portwood on blast.

Obviously, many people have so much to say about Amber.

Though Jenelle herself was using the same platform, she singled out Amber’s unhinged TikTok Lives in which she rants and rambles and often says loathsome things that she cannot unsay.

“What’s my thought on Amber and her crazy Lives?” Jenelle asked.

“Honestly, I wasn’t even going to comment earlier about it,” she admitted before commenting.

“But it’s just delusional, that’s all,” Jenelle described with uncharacteristic accuracy.

“That’s all I gotta say.”

What if Leah sees this?

Additionally, Jenelle Evans condemned Amber Portwood for doing these red flag TikTok Lives when Lean Shirley, her estranged daughter, might be watching.

Of course, she then remembered that the same could be said of her.

With that in mind, she adjusted her criticism.

“I know right now my kids could possibly be watching my Live,” Jenelle explained. “So I’m not gonna sit here and be manic or act crazy or get drunk and go Live late at night until 3 in the morning.”

Amber Portwood sits and expresses regrets.
Despite her many flaws, Amber Portwood does sometimes make a solid point. And she’s doing just that during this confessional moment from Teen Mom: The Next Chapter. (Image Credit: MTV)

“But I was thinking last night, I was like, ‘Dude, Leah’s probably watching her Lives right now’ and [Leah’s probably] like, ‘Oh gosh, she’s Live again,’” Jenelle described.

“Leah probably has her friends texting her like, ‘Oh your mom’s Live again.’ Just annoying as s–t,” she speculated.

Jenelle went on to claim that what she posts has “changed a lot” now that her kids are older. It sure would have been nice if she’d put her kids first years ago.

Maybe divorced David Eason before he could do so much damage.

‘Teen Mom’ paychecks cannot last forever

“What’s she going to do when the show ends? Riddle me that,” Jenelle Evans demanded regarding Amber Portwood.

“Right now she’s chillin’ on a couch and collecting those checks and saving that money.”

She suggested: “She better save it for as long as she can, because eventually it will run out, if the show’s over.” Reportedly, the show may very much be over.

“What is she going to do when it ends? She’s going to have to get a real job I guess? Beg people for money on TikTok I guess, I don’t know,” Jenelle speculated.

A lot of people are wondering the same thing.

Donald Trump Lashes Out at ‘Stupid Republican’ Supporters Amid Ongoing …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Many of Donald Trump’s most fervent supporters expressed hope — and, in some cases, certainty — that the president would declassify the so-called “Epstein files” during his second term in office.

So it’s not surprising that Trump’s disapproval rating has reached a new high this week following FBI and DOJ memos that deny the existence of said files.

As he often does when he feels cornered, Trump is now reacting with anger.

But in an unexpected twist on his usual M.O., this time, the president is lashing out at his own supporters.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump speaks at a House Republicans Conference meeting at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill on November 13, 2024 in Washington, DC.

Trump bashes ‘Epstein hoax,’ ‘stupid and foolish Republicans’

In a surprising post on his Truth Social platform, Trump blamed Democrats for the continued interest in Jeffrey Epstein’s client list, and he proceeded to bash Republicans who have fallen for the “hoax.”

“Some stupid Republicans and foolish Republicans fall into the net, and so they try and do the Democrats’ work,” Trump wrote.

“I call it the Epstein hoax. Takes a lot of time and effort. Instead of talking about the great achievements we’ve had … they’re wasting their time with a guy who obviously had some very serious problems, who died three, four years ago. I’d rather talk about the success we have with the economy,” he continued, adding:

“Certain Republicans got duped by the Democrats and they’re following a Democrat playbook. We do have bigger problems.”

Trump’s furor was evident as he argued that the Democrats’ “new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bullsh-t,’ hook, line, and sinker.”

“Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats’ work, don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support anymore!” Trump said of his “past” followers.

Trump’s latest tirade receives mixed reaction from base

On social media, confusion reigns, as supporters and critics alike seem baffled by Trump’s latest gambit.

“Theoretically there could have been some way for Trump to artfully ‘move on’ from the Epstein debacle if that’s what he really wants. Instead, he’s going nuclear on his biggest supporters, disowning them and declaring they’ve been conned by Democrat ‘bullsh-t’ Fascinating stuff!” journalist Michael Tracey wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“If you don’t believe the whole Epstein thing was a scam, Trump says he doesn’t want your support anymore. He just handed a landslide to Democrats in the midterms,” political commentator Matt Strickland chimed in.

It remains to be seen what the long-term impact of Trump’s new Epstein strategy will be.

But observers from across the ideological spectrum seem to agree that from a political standpoint, this might be his riskiest gamble to date.

Pete Davidson: Expecting First Child With Girlfriend Elsie Hewitt!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Pete Davidson is going to be a dad!

Davidson and girlfriend Elsie Hewitt revealed today that they’re expecting their first child.

The big news comes to us courtesy of a post on Hewitt’s Instagram page.

Elsie and Pete share their big news with the world

“Welp now everyone knows we had sex,” Elsie captioned a carousel that included a photo of an ultrasound and a lot of loved-up photos of her and Pete.

As we previously reported, Elsie is a London-born model and actress.

She and the Saturday Night Live alum went public with their relationship back in March when they packed on the PDA during a trip to Florida.

Davidson, of course, has dated several of the world’s most famous women.

He was briefly engaged to Ariana Grande back in 2018.

A few years later, Davidson entered a serious relationship with Kim Kardashian, her first following her divorce from Kanye West.

As a result of all these high-profile relationships, Pete gained a reputation as a bit of a player.

But those who know him best say they realized right away that his relationship with Elsie was built to last.

Elsie Hewitt and Pete Davidson are seen as the Boston Celtics take on the New York Knicks in the first quarter of Game Six of the Eastern Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden on May 16, 2025 in New York City.

“She came to the show in Newark in June,” a source recently told Page Six. “He’s never had a girlfriend come to his stand-up show.”

A separate insider told the outlet that Pete was “very happy” and “dating someone very different from anybody else he’s ever dated before.”

Elsie’s been the subject of pregnancy speculation for several weeks

Today’s news doesn’t come as a total shock to fans, as eagle-eyed Instagram commenters have been speculating about a possible pregnancy for several weeks.

Elsie Hewitt and Pete Davidson attend the 13th Annual Blossom Ball at The Pierre Hotel on May 15, 2025 in New York City.

“New boobs or pregnant?” one of Elsie’s followers recently asked.

“Babes you either got new boobs or are preggo,” another commented.

Sadly, pregnancy speculation is something that famous women are frequently subjected to on social media. But for once, the folks churning the rumor mill were actually onto something!

Sources tell Page Six that Elsie’ due date is sometime in early winter.

Few celebs in recent memory have come off as relatable and down-to-earth as Pete, so many of the well wishes on social media sound like they’re coming from friends rather than fans.

And we’d like to add our voice to the chorus of those offering sincere congratulations to Elsie and Pete!

Kelly Ripa Roasts Mark Consuelos for ‘Repulsive’ Sex Demand (And Shares How …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Kelly Ripa is calling out husband Mark Consuelos. Again.

Not so long after he roasted her breast size, she’s describing a sex habit of his that she finds downright “disgusting.”

She even revealed how she’s mostly gotten him to stop asking — all thanks to her job.

Ripa and Consuelos have publicly teased each other for years. But this is some strong language.

Kelly Ripa on a podcast.
Speaking to the ‘Not Skinny But Not Fat’ podcast, Kelly Ripa got very personal in July 2025. (Image Credit: YouTube)

During the latest episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Kelly Ripa and podcaster Amanda Hirsch discussed their sex lives and sexual habits.

When Hirsch confirmed that she votes “definitely not morning” when it comes to sex, Ripa agreed.

“Men are morning people,” she declared. “I find it disgusting.”

Ripa is, of course, famously married to Mark Consuelos. The two have been together for the past three decades. Many Millennial kids watched alongside family members as the two fell in love on screen on All My Children in the ’90s.

According to the Live with Kelly and Mark host, her hunky husband “only” wants it first thing in the morning.

“He hasn’t learned, he’ll never learn,” Ripa lamented.

“He’s a guy. He’s never going to learn.”

What’s the problem with boning in the morning?

If you’re curious what issue Kelly Ripa has with Mark Consuelos’ eagerness in the AM, fear not: she explained in detail.

“He wants to kiss, and I have a retainer in,” she griped. “I gotta rip that out. And he’s got his nasal strips on.”

Ripa said that “it’s like we are the most repulsive, disgusting” versions of themselves when they first wake up.

“That d–k has a brain of its own and it doesn’t see the retainer,” Ripa went on to joke. “I’m already pre-disgusted for tomorrow morning.” Ouch!

“Here’s the thing, there needs to be a yin and a yang here. It can’t always be your way, ’cause it feels like 90 percent of the time, it’s your way,” she said, describing what she told Consuelos.

“And now that we work together every day, it’s gonna have to sometimes be my way, and my way’s at night only,” Ripa revealed.

The solution? Working together with very, very early days

“The greatest thing about this job, this thing has like, almost repulsed him from morning time during the work week,” Kelly Ripa gossiped. “It’s so early and it’s like a miracle.”

She went on to state aspirationally: “May this show last until he suffers from erectile dysfunction!”

On that note, Ripa joked: “He’s in his mid-50s now. Shouldn’t that be happening now? I was promised!”

We’re sure that there are countless people who would welcome morning sex with Mark Consuelos.

But we are also quite sure that this celebrity’s couple longtime habit of teasing each other is an expression of love, not disdain.

Jax Taylor Shocks Co-Stars, Says He’s Done with The Valley

Reading Time: 3 minutes

KA-BOOM!

Jax Taylor just dropped a bombshell on both reality viewers and those who have starred alongside him over the past two years:

This cast member is walking away from The Valley.

The 46-year-old announced this decision in an statement to Us Weekly on Wednesday, July 16, telling the outlet:

“After an incredibly challenging year and many honest conversations with my team and producers, I’ll be stepping away from the next season of The Valley,” Jax said, adding to the publication:

“Right now, my focus needs to be on my sobriety, my mental health, and coparenting. Taking this time is necessary for me to become the best version of myself — especially for our son, Cruz.”

Indeed, Taylor shares the four-year-old with Brittany Cartwright.

The exes got married in 2019 and then the latter filed for divorce in the summer of 2024 while filming season 2 of The Valley, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

She has since trashed Jax on a number of occasions.

TV personalities Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright attend the 2018 MTV Movie And TV Awards at Barker Hangar on June 16, 2018 in Santa Monica, California.

Previously, Jax checked himself into a rehab facility for mental health issues.

Meanwhile, a source tells People Magazine that Taylor’s colleagues were “blindsided” by his decision.

“They were not given any advance notifications about his exit,” said the insider.

“Most of the cast were notified that filming was going to begin at the end of the summer, and they expected Jax would be a part of the new season because — even as lately as yesterday — he hadn’t said otherwise. This is a huge surprise.”

We may also be surprised by just who will comprise The Valley Season 3 cast.

“We’re figuring out all of it,” executive producer Alex Baskin told Variety last month. “It’s very likely the show does look different next season, but I don’t know what different means.”

As for Jax, we can only hope his hard drug days are over and that he really is a changed man.

Taylor entered an in-patient facility for mental health and addiction struggles in August 2024, six months after announcing his separation from his estranged wife.

“Right now, my focus needs to be on my sobriety, my mental health, and coparenting,” Jax said in a statement back then. “Taking this time is necessary for me to become the best version of myself — especially for our son, Cruz…

“I’ve been dealing with this on and off since I was 23 and now I’m 45. There was times where I would stop doing it but then there were times where I’d go heavy on it…

“I’ve never said this in my life. So to come out and say that I have an addiction [and] that I have a sickness that I have to work on the rest of my life is a really big deal for me. Obviously, it’s a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”
