Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday in Alaska — and plenty is at stake on Election Day

On Tuesday, Alaska could elect its first Democratic governor since 2002, roll back the clock on the way it conducts elections, help decide control of the U.S. House and Senate for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s second term and possibly elect the first Indigenous woman to the Senate.

Here’s what to consider when voting and what to watch for as the results come in:

U.S. Senate

In a four-person race, incumbent Republican Dan S. Sullivan is being challenged by Democratic candidate Mary Peltola, independent Dan J. Sullivan and Republican Gerald Heikes.

Polling throughout the race has indicated Peltola has a small lead over Sen. Sullivan, but the difference has been consistently within the margin of error, indicating that either could win. Dan J. Sullivan and Heikes are each expected to get less than 3% of the vote.

As a result, Alaska’s Senate race is one of a relative handful of toss-up seats that could decide whether Republicans or Democrats control the Senate.2026 Voter Guide

Sen. Sullivan has been a reliable supporter of President Donald Trump and the Senate’s Republicans; if Peltola were to win, it would increase the chances of a Democratic takeover. Peltola has campaigned on an anticorruption platform and appears likely to support Democratic efforts to investigate the Trump administration.

While both Peltola and Sullivan support oil and gas drilling on federal land in Alaska, other Senate Democrats oppose such drilling and could override Peltola.

In addition, Peltola has said she would support restrictions or a ban on deepwater trawling in federal waters near Alaska, but Democratic control of the Senate could put Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, in control of the Senate committee that handles fisheries, and Murray has supported the trawl industry.

During his latest term, Sullivan has successfully advocated for a vast expansion of the U.S. Coast Guard and military in Alaska, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in construction projects to the state.

The Trump administration and other Republicans have indicated that they may seek to dispute the legitimacy of a Peltola victory, citing a New York Times article that reported Democratic campaigners recruited Dan J. Sullivan as a spoiler who could siphon votes away from Sen. Sullivan.

The chance of a successful challenge would fall if Peltola defeats Sen. Sullivan by a margin that is larger than the number of votes received by Dan J. Sullivan.

In addition, if Sen. Sullivan is re-elected, there would be no challenge.

Governor

Democratic candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and three Republicans — Bernadette Wilson, Dave Bronson and Treg Taylor — are seeking to succeed Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican who is term-limited and unable to run again this year.

While ranked choice voting could allow Republican votes to transfer from a lower-finishing Republican to a higher-finishing one, historical trends show many Republicans are unwilling to rank more than one or two candidates, and polling indicates Kreiss-Tomkins has high odds of becoming the first Democratic governor of Alaska since Tony Knowles left office in 2002.GET THE MORNING HEADLINES.SUBSCRIBE

Kreiss-Tomkins has campaigned on an ambitious series of policy goals, including the restoration of a pension plan for teachers and state employees, advance funding for public schools, a multimillion-dollar bond issue for electrical improvements across the state, a temporary ban on new large-scale computing data centers, changes to the way the state conducts elections and restrictions on trawl fisheries.

The election of a Democrat could cause ripple effects in the state’s relationship with the Trump administration, which has withheld federal payments to Democratic-led states, including disaster relief money.

Wilson, who President Donald Trump has endorsed and polls have indicated is the leading Republican candidate, has advocated a more aggressive push toward policies pursued by Dunleavy during his eight years in office, including more funding for the Permanent Fund dividend, even if it means breaking an eight-year-old limit on the size of transfers from the Alaska Permanent Fund.

Taylor, attorney general under Dunleavy, has proposed policies mostly in line with Dunleavy, as has Bronson. Both men have advocated a harder limit on spending from the Alaska Permanent Fund, as has Kreiss-Tomkins.

Ballot Measure 2

The general election ballot includes two ballot measures, but Ballot Measure 3 is a largely inconsequential revision to the state’s existing ban on noncitizen voting.

Ballot Measure 2, conversely, would have major impacts in the state. If passed, it would repeal the state’s current system of elections, in which all candidates for an office run together and the top four vote-getters advance from the primary to the general election, which uses ranked-choice voting.

In place of that system, Alaska would return to party-run primaries, where political parties set the rules for who may participate. One candidate from each party would advance to the general election, and ranked choice voting would not be used.

In addition, the state would no longer have a law requiring third-party political donors to disclose the source of their money; contributors would be able to give money anonymously.

Because of a conflict with Ballot Measure 1, passed during the August primary election, enacting Ballot Measure 2 likely also would eliminate a limit on direct financial donations to governor candidates, allowing donors to give unlimited amounts of money in governor races. A final ruling on that elimination would take place after the election.

U.S. House

Unlike in the Senate, Alaska’s U.S. House race is unlikely to be decisive in determining control of one half of Congress. National polling indicates Democrats are likely to take control of the chamber.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Nick Begich III is being challenged by independent candidate Bill Hill, federally-imprisoned Democratic candidate Eric Hafner and Libertarian Jim McDermott.

The Alaska Democratic Party opposes Hafner and is urging party members to back Hill instead. Nevertheless, pre-election polling indicates Hafner could get 5% or more of Alaskans’ first-choice votes, and analysts believe that helps Begich’s re-election chances.

Begich, first elected in 2024, has been a reliable vote for President Donald Trump and Republicans in the House.

Hill has not said whether he would join Republicans or Democrats in the House but has said he would not serve under current Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana.

Alaska Legislature

Both the Alaska Senate and Alaska House are currently controlled by coalition majorities; the majority in the Senate includes Republicans and Democrats, while the one in the House includes Democrats, independents and Republicans.

Over the past two years, the coalitions have been in conflict with Dunleavy, who vetoed more than 25% of all legislation passed by the House and Senate, a record since statehood.

If the coalitions continue and Kreiss-Tomkins is elected governor, the state’s legislative and executive branches would be aligned on major issues including school pensions and funding.

If the coalitions continue but a Republican is elected governor, or if Kreiss-Tomkins is elected but enough Republicans are elected to the Legislature to form a majority, some kind of discord is likely to continue.

Taylor Red’s Nika and Natalie Taylor Share Heartbreaking News of Sister Nicole’s Death at 35

Taylor Red members Nika and Natalie Taylor have announced the passing of their triplet sister and the third member of their trio, Nicole Taylor.

In a new video posted across social media on Wednesday, Nov. 2, the sisters revealed they were “shocked and heartbroken” to share that their sister had died at 35 years old following her battle with terminal breast cancer.

“This isn’t the video we thought we’d ever be making. We thought she would be here sharing her story of earthly healing, but instead we’re here sharing her story of heavenly healing and she’s at peace and no longer suffering, so we’re thankful for that,” they said in the opening of their nearly 11-minute long statement.

Before opening up about the details of her passing, they both revealed some of their favorite qualities about their sister, since so many of their followers did not know her personally. They stated that Nicole was the oldest of the three of them, by one minute for Natalie and two minutes by Nika. They described her as being their “fearless leader,” who would often speak on their behalf, led them to give their lives to Christ and always had their back.

Her favorite color was Cheetah Print, her favorite food was charcuterie and she loved going out to eat and traveling. Plus, after growing a platform online and playing a big role in their regular social media content, she eventually went on to serve as a co-host for a country radio show with Taste of Country, “which she really enjoyed doing,” they added.

The sisters continued, “She also played banjo and guitar and she sang low harmonies in some lead when we played together in our band. She was also the spokesman on stage with woman preacher vibes and she obviously was a huge part of our social media content that we did together that a lot of y’all may know her from…Obviously those are just highlights. She was so much more than that to our family and sisterhood that just kind of skims the surface of things.”

Even though this was an understandably hard topic to discuss, Nika and Natalie did their best to honor and remember their sister by sharing a bit of her story. They first thanked everyone who has sent prayers their way since learning about Nicole’s diagnosis with breast cancer in 2022, as well as all the doctors and nurses who helped her along the way.

The sisters went on to recall the moment they got the call, confirming that Nicole had stage three cancer.

“I remember we were out in a public place and she got a phone call from the nurse about her biopsy results. I remember going to the bathroom and she put it on speaker to hear the phone call or whatever. The nurse was like, ‘Do you have any family with you?’ And so we kind of knew where the conversation was headed and she was like, ‘You have cancer.’ I just remember just breaking down in utter shock. I was so surprised,” Natalie admitted.

This was not the results they were expecting, as Natalie explained they had all been “blessed” with good health all their lives.

“I was crying and ran out to the hallway to tell Nika and I remember Nicole just said, ‘God’s going to use this for his glory.’ That’s just how she responded to it.”

Despite learning that her cancer would be “very aggressive,” Nicole still had hope that “God was going to get her through.”

“I remember me and Natalie were just so shocked and destroyed and we were just paralyzed like ‘what just happened to our sister?’ And one day she said, ‘We’re not going to dread this. We’re not going to live in fear. We’re going to have fun during this time.’ And she was just always cheering us up,” Nika added.

The three of them made an effort to have fun and to not live in fear and hopelessness. To show the true strength Nicole carried, her sisters noted that she even did CrossFit while getting chemo treatments. Ultimately, she felt peace from God that stayed with her until the very end.

They go on to say that at first, they were overjoyed to learn that Nicole was responding well to treatments.

“We were ecstatic basically. And she rung the bell and finished her treatments and she had no evidence of disease. Then I felt like we could finally breathe again.”

They later learned that her breast cancer had actually turned into stage four cancer. Nicole started treatments once again while going about her daily life, working two jobs, traveling and moving forward as normal. Nine months later, the cancer returned with a new and “way more serious” diagnosis.

“She was told after asking her prognosis that she had around three months and that if the treatments worked, they didn’t know how long after that.”

Her response to hearing that news was full of strength. She stated, “Everyone will face judgment and I’m ready to.”

Naika and Natalie then included a video of their sister’s testimony from her early 20s on why she was ready to face judgment.

The statement reads:

“Hey, my name’s Nicole. I’m going to tell you my story of hope. I gave my life to Christ when I was around 15 years old. Before then it was all about how good of a person that I thought I was. I was involved in church, I was in the youth group, I was in a Christian band even, but I never came to a point in my life where I really realized how wicked and evil I was without Christ, how much I needed God, how much he didn’t need me at all. And one night at church, the Holy Spirit just began to convict my heart and just began to show me how lost I really was. The best way I can describe the way I felt was the Bible verses says our righteousness is like filthy rags. God actually made me feel like filthy rags that night and I’m so thankful that he did that.

A lot of us look at conviction as such a bad thing or a scary thing, but conviction is a blessing that the creator of the universe would speak to us, that he would show us how much we really need him. I’m so thankful that he did that. He actually sent his son to die on the cross for us and his son actually overcame all of our sin, so he has a right to show us how much we need him. When the invitation came, instead of playing the invitation with my sisters, I walked down the aisle for the invitation and just asked Jesus to save me, no special fancy prayer, just Jesus saved me. I committed my life to Jesus Christ. I repented of my sins and I said, God, from now on, I want to be more like you every day, but I need your help.

God’s given me so much purpose and joy and I’m so thankful that I committed my life to him. If you want to do the same, I want to encourage you to do so.”

They ended the video by reading a few scripture verses and then sharing that Nicole was truly at peace at the time when she passed and for that, they are “really thankful.”

“Yes, things did not turn out as we hoped. We lived every day expecting full miraculous healing here on earth and lived every day in hopes of that.”

“Our sister is healed and no longer suffering. We know God took care of her and encouraged all of us through this process. We are thankful for his faithful promises. We are thankful for y’all for your prayers and support in watching this video,” they added in conclusion.

The trio, known as Taylor Red, began gaining wider attention online in 2020 after sharing a series of lighthearted videos on social media. Although the sisters had been performing professionally since 2011 under the name Red Roots, their TikTok account helped them connect with audiences during the pandemic lockdowns and build a following that eventually grew to millions across several different social media platforms.

Their community has already shown up in the comment section, with fans showing their support for Nika and Natalie as they navigate this incredibly difficult new chapter together.

Nicole Taylor Cause of Death: Beloved Country Singer Was 35

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We have tragic news to report from the world of music:

Nicole Taylor, one-third of the country music group Taylor Red, has died at just 35 years old.

The singer’s death was announced by her triplet sisters and bandmates, Nika and Natalie Taylor, in an emotional social media video.

Nicole Taylor, Nika Taylor, and Natalie Taylor of Taylor Red attend Opry 100: A Live Celebration at Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium on March 19, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nicole had been battling breast cancer after receiving a diagnosis in 2022.

“We’re heartbroken to announce the passing of our sister Nicole Taylor,” Nika shared in the video. “We honestly thought she’d be healed here on earth, but now she’s healed in heaven.”

The sisters acknowledged that the announcement was difficult to make, explaining that they once expected Nicole to share her own recovery story.

Instead, they are left remembering a woman they described as their leader and best friend.

“We are heartbroken, but we know she is in Heaven and will see her again,” they said in a statement posted to the group’s website.

Nicole’s cancer journey was particularly difficult. According to her sisters, she was initially diagnosed with aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer in 2022.

However, that didn’t stop her from trying to live life as normally as possible.

In fact, Natalie and Nika recalled how Nicole continued doing CrossFit even while undergoing chemotherapy treatments. She also encouraged those closest to her to remain positive rather than allowing fear to take over.

Initially, the treatments appeared to be working. Nicole reportedly reached a point when doctors found no evidence of the disease.

Unfortunately, the cancer eventually returned and progressed to Stage 4.

Even after receiving that devastating news, Nicole remained determined to keep going. Her sisters recalled how she continued traveling, working, and finding opportunities to enjoy life.

Nicole also maintained a strong faith throughout her illness, believing that God would use her experience for a greater purpose.

The three sisters built their musical careers together, originally performing under the name Red Roots before eventually becoming Taylor Red. They released their first album in 2011, followed by The Middle of Nowhere and Triplicity.

Although their music helped establish their careers, the identical triplets also developed an enormous online following, attracting millions of fans through their social media presence.

According to the group’s website, Nicole died on September 28 in Nashville, Tennessee. A private memorial service has already taken place, and the family has provided a way for fans to contribute to one of Nicole’s favorite charities.

Losing a sibling is devastating under any circumstances. Losing someone who has also been your musical partner and closest friend for an entire lifetime is an especially painful goodbye.

Our thoughts are with Nicole’s family, friends, and fans.

First Alaska election results to come Tuesday evening, final unofficial results in 2 weeks

The Alaska Division of Elections expects to report the first results from the state’s general election between 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday night, with updates through the early morning hours Wednesday.

The state’s closest races may not have an unofficial winner for more than two weeks.

Historically, between 75-90% of Election Day results are available by noon Wednesday, with results from rural precincts trickling in through the following days.

The final unofficial results will not be available until Nov. 18, and the division expects to publish an official result on Nov. 25.

Because a disproportionate number of Democratic voters have cast ballots in advance of Election Day and some advance votes are counted after Election Day, initial results will be more right-leaning than the final result.

Under Alaska’s election system, general-election voters may rank each of the four candidates for an office in order of preference.

If one of the four receives at least 50% of the first-choice votes, they win.

If none of the four hit that mark, the person with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated, and voters who picked them have their votes go to their second choice.

The eliminations and redistributions continue until only two candidates are left, and the person with the most votes wins.

Under a policy established in 2022, the Division of Elections performs the ranked choice tabulation on Nov. 18, the deadline for the last absentee ballots to be counted.

More than a third of likely voters have already cast ballots

Between 260,000 and 300,000 Alaska voters are expected to participate in this year’s general election, or about half of the state’s 604,771 registered voters, based on the turnout in the past two midterm elections. The state saw 267,047 voters in 2022 and 285,009 in 2018.

By the time Election Day polls open at 7 a.m., more than a third of the state’s likely voters will have already cast ballots. At 4 p.m. Monday, the Division of Elections reported that it had already received just under 100,000 early and absentee votes.

Early votes are done in person at 11 locations on the Railbelt, in Juneau and Nome. Voters’ ID is checked on site, before a person votes.

As of the end of the day on Oct. 31, more registered Republicans than registered Democrats had voted early, but the number of Democratic votes was disproportionately high: 14.6% of the state’s registered Democrats had cast early votes through Oct. 31, compared to 10.9% of the state’s registered Republicans.

Alaska has more than twice as many registered Republicans as registered Democrats, but more than 65% of the state’s 604,771 registered voters are registered to neither of America’s two largest parties.

Countable absentee votes will trickle in until Nov. 18

Absentee ballots can be cast by mail, fax, or in person at dozens of locations across the state. Because a voter’s ID is reviewed after the ballot is cast, some absentee ballots will be rejected for procedural errors or because the voter wasn’t properly registered. Generally, the statewide rejection rate is less than 5%.

More than 14,000 absentee ballots had been sent out but not yet returned as of Sunday noon; past trends indicate most of those will eventually arrive and be counted.

Absentee ballots can arrive by mail as late as Nov. 18 and still be counted, but historical trends show all but a relative handful of absentee ballots arrive within one week of Election Day — this year, that’s by Nov. 10. The busiest day for absentee ballot returns is typically the day after Election Day.

Will Smith & Ex-Wife Sheree Zampino REUNITE in Australia

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Not all exes are enemies.

Some are on very good terms.

Though many know Will Smith for his hit films and his high-profile relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith, she is not his first wife.

He and Sheree Zampino were all smiles as they traveled together. Take a look:

Will Smith in 2022.

They were all smiles Down Under!

Just before the end of October, Will and Sheree met up in Australia.

The two were spotted smiling left and right in Sydney.

Will’s outfit was a little more casual than his ex-wife’s, as he wore a hoodie and sweatpants.

Sheree is braver than most — and a Real Housewife — which is why she worked some couture into her travel garb.

All that we really know about their meet-up is that they were at the same airport at the same time. However, their history goes back a long way.

Though Jaden and Willow are amazing and talented, they are not Will’s only children. Sometimes, the public forgets that.

From May 1992 to February 1995, Will and Sheree were married.

In ’92, the erstwhile couple welcomed Willard Carroll “Trey” Smith.

Trey is now in his 30s — that’s how time works, you see — and has also done acting.

Sheree recently joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, even if the role was less than permanent.

He just wrapped his latest project

Will’s time in Sydney was not a social call or a vacation.

He recently filmed Supermax, an upcoming action film.

The movie is a murder mystery — one set inside the world’s most secure prison.

Will has a long history of theatrical hits, to say nothing of his television fame in the early ’90s.

Admittedly, the quality of his projects can vary widely. But that is perhaps because he is willing to take roles that others consider to be a gamble. Sometimes, it’s a smash success.

Almost three years after Will and Sheree divorced, he married Jada Pinkett in December 1997.

Jada ended up being a stepmother to Trey, who was in turn an older brother to Jaden and Willow.

For the record, Will and Sheree have been freely traveling together for years — with Jada’s blessing and encouragement.

They share a child and a lot of history.

Some folks cannot spend time with an ex, let alone travel together or walk together for laughs at an airport. But that is not the case for Will and Sheree.

Will Smith & Ex-Wife Sheree Zampino REUNITE in Australia was originally published on The Hollywood Gossip.
