State officials have barred the import, transport and sale of two fast-growing invasive species that were once popular garden ornamentals but have now wreaked havoc on natural vegetation.
The Alaska Division of Agriculture on Friday said it issued a quarantine for the two species: Prunus padus, commonly known as the European bird cherry tree or mayday tree, and Prunus virginiana, commonly known as the Canada red or chokecherry tree.

The order went into effect Monday.
In essence, it will extend through the state a ban that was imposed in 2017 in Anchorage. The trees have become a particular nuisance in Alaska’s largest city, where they have proliferated in greenbelts and other spaces and crowded out native species like birch and spruce.
State and local officials have been trying to remove these non-native trees, and the new policy should help that effort, said Division of Agriculture Director Bryan Scoresby.
“This quarantine prohibits the importation, transport, and sale within the state of these two trees and their parts,” Scoresby said in a statement. “Many agencies continue to pursue control measures with the goal of eliminating these invasive trees. With this quarantine, the flow of trees into Alaska will stop, making this goal more attainable.”

The ornamentals quickly spread, displacing native vegetation, impeding animals’ access and upsetting natural food webs, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Their berries can be toxic to moose, causing cyanide poisoning that is sometimes fatal.
Along with those problems, the invasives might be spreading disease to other trees, according to the Division of Agriculture. A fungal disease called “Black Knot” was recently discovered on chokecherry trees on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, making the invasive trees potential disease spreaders, the division said.
The two tree species are prime targets of annual Anchorage “weed smackdown” invasive-removal events. There is also a concerted effort to remove the trees from Fairbanks, including on the UAF campus, where officials have been methodically replacing them with native trees.
Eradicating the trees might require more than simply cutting them down because new trees can grow out of root systems below stumps, according to the Cooperative Extension Service.
For all the damage the two invasive tree species cause in Alaska, however, some people have found ways to benefit from them. The toxin in their berries can be neutralized and eaten by people.

Some are calling into question Hilaria Baldwin and her pregnant belly photos from over the years.
That’s right — it’s no longer just about her accent.
The Baldwins star shares seven children with Alec Baldwin, and is stepmother to his eldest daughter, Ireland.
Officially, Hilaria welcomed just one of her children via surrogate. But some ask if that is the whole truth.

As you can see below, some on Reddit and elsewhere on social media are questioning whether Hilaria Baldwin’s pregnancy photos look quite right.
In a post labeled “Each of Hilaria Baldwin’s ‘pregnancies’ in chronological order,” a slideshow of photos shows Hilaria looking very different.
This is not only because she looked different over all in 2013 than she did in 2022.
It is because she seems to carry the pregnancies so differently that people are openly questioning whether she was even pregnant for some of these. For most of these.
From the looks of things, no one questions whether Hilaria Baldwin was truly pregnant with Carmen back in 2013.
Similarly, everyone freely acknowledges that Maria Lucia Victoria, born in February 2021, was welcomed via surrogate.
(These speculators have a theory as to why Hilaria and Alec divulged Lucia’s surrogacy)
It’s all of the children in between — and the child they’ve welcomed since — that the public is scrutinizing.

As you can see in the social media slideshow above, Hilaria’s pregnancy photos — with the sole exception of Carmen — look unusual.
There is absolutely such a thing as “basketball pregnancies.” Some people are very skinny, and their pregnancies are practically invisible from behind. As if they were smuggling basketballs under their shirts.
But, as numerous commenters pointed out, Hilaria does not appear to have secondary signs of pregnancy as she did with Carmen. No weight gain in her limbs and no visible changes in her breast tissue. These are changes that would normally be very conspicuous on such a slender, petite woman.

As to the theory which we hesitate to label a conspiracy theory … it’s a claim that Hilaria, for whatever reason, stopped giving birth herself after Carmen.
The theory also says that they kept all but one of the subsequent births via surrogate (more specifically, a gestational carrier) a secret.
That would be an extremely odd thing to do. Many people — especially wealthy celebrities — welcome children via surrogate. But Alec and Hilaria are deeply odd people.
You don’t usually get your own TLC show if you’re normal.

Alec and Hilaria welcomed Maria Lucia Victoria on February 25, 2021. That was just five months and some change after the birth of Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas on September 8, 2020.
Physicians advise waiting around two years between pregnancies. Giving birth five months apart would either be medically impossible or a medical emergency. So the fan theory is that Hilaria “had” to admit that Lucia was a surrogacy in order to explain the back-to-back births of her fifth and sixth children.
We have to of course emphasize that Hilaria could simply be someone who looks so slender during most of her pregnancies that she looks like she’s wearing a prosthetic baby bump.
And that perhaps she and Alec decided to have a child via surrogate at a time that overlapped with a natural pregnancy.
It is possible. After all, as we acknowledged, Hilaria is known for her eccentricities.

Congratulations are in order for Chloe Grace Moretz and Kate Harrison!
The couple got married in an intimate (and very stylish) wedding over Labor Day weekend.
Chloe spoke with Vogue ahead of the wedding and offered details about the festive multi-day event.

We don’t know exactly how many guests were in attendance, but it sounds like Chloe and Kate went out of their way to make sure everyone had fun.
“A big part of the wedding [is about] sharing things that Kate and I love with everyone that’s going to be there,” Moretz told the outlet.
“So there’s fishing, horseback riding, and poker. Kate made a custom poker mat herself, so we’re going to kind of be leaning into it. Our second day is going to be line dancing and everything.”
According to Vogue, Chloe sported a light blue wedding dress and veil with matching gloves, while Kate wore an “ice cream” white custom jacket.

“It just feels like me,” Moretz told the magazine.
“I never really envisioned a wedding dress in my mind growing up, so when we started talking about what that would look like, I knew I would do something non-traditional, and not wear white, and kind of have it feel different, and I think it really does.”
Harrison is a model who’s worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, so not surprisingly, a lot of thought went into the aesthetics of the big weekend.
“The thing I’m the most excited for – other than being married – is that first look moment,” Harrison told Vogue ahead of the wedding.
“Having no idea of what we look like in our dresses, it’s going to be so special. This dress just kind of makes you feel ready. This design is perfect. I’m ready!”

“We’ve been together for almost seven years and making this promise to each other in a new way, and exchanging these vows,” Moretz added.
“I think it’s important to just stay every day choosing each other.”
Chloe and Kate were first romantically linked back in 2018 when they were spotted holding hands at LA hotspot Nobu.
The pair have been inseparable ever since, and it sounds like they couldn’t be happier about making it legal.
There’s no word yet on what sort of celebrities were on hand for the ceremony, but we’re sure there were more than a few famous names on hand.
We’ll keep you posted as new details trickle in!
