Achieving fame through his role in Dances With Wolves, actor Nathan Chasing Horse traveled to various indigenous communities in the US and Canada.
He has now been convicted for preying upon women and girls across two decades.
In addition to capitalizing upon his fame, he also used his victims’ faith against them.
The court has sentenced him to life in prison. And prosecutors in other jurisdictions are also pursuing charges.
Convicted and sentenced
In 2023, authorities in Las Vegas first arrested and indicted the actor.
Law enforcement in other states — and in Canada — filed similar charges, which remain pending.
He is charged with a litany of crimes, most of which pertain to sexual assault.
Other jurisdictions may have a bit of a wait on their hands before they get to put Chasing Horse through their own trials.
He has been sentenced to life in prison. The disgraced actor will only be eligible for parole after 37 years behind bars.
Dances With Wolves is a legendary 1990 film that stars Kevin Costner, who also directed the piece after encouraging the writer to adapt it.
Chasing Horse portrayed a young Sioux named Smiles a Lot in the Oscar-wining piece.
After the fact, he traveled to visit various Native Americans across North America, participating in healing ceremonies.
Prosecutors say that he laundered this reputation as a Lakota medicine man in order to prey upon women and girls within these communities.
The jury heard from women who say that they had attended ceremonies or gone to him for help. That, they described, is when he decided to make them into his victims.
He used their faith to keep them quiet for years
Anyone familiar with sexual predators operating within a religious or spiritual role can imagine how this took place.
Prosecutors introduced evidence to the court of one victim who he sexually assaulted, claiming that he would help her mother’s cancer battle.
One victim was first assaulted when she was 14.
The jury in this case heard from three of his victims.
Ultimately, he received some acquittals but convictions on thirteen charges. That was enough, the judge concluded, for a life sentence.
DDA Bianca Pucci told the court that Chasing Horse “spun a web of abuse” to lure victims to him — and to keep them silent.
Even upon his conviction and sentencing, the former actor claims that he is innocent.
Chasing Horse told the judge that his sentence is “a miscarriage of justice.”
He may look forward to other “injustices” in other jurisdictions, in both the US and Canada, in the coming years.
Chasing Horse will be eligible for parole as early as the 2060s. Though further convictions may mean that release from prison merely means a transfer to a new facility.

There’s reason to believe that Taylor Frankie Paul’s season of The Bachelorette might eventually see the light of day.
In a new interview, Rob Mills, Disney’s executive vice president of unscripted TV, revealed that ABC is still open to the possibility of eventually airing Taylor’s episodes.
“Everything with that is one day at a time. There’s really nothing new to report right now,” Mills told Variety when asked about the possibility that the season — which has already been filmed in its entirety — might eventually air.
Recent court decisions may have influenced Disney’s decision-making process. We now know that Paul will not face any additional charges following an investigation into additional domestic violence claims.
Taylor pled guilty to assaulting then-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen in February of 2023. But it was only when ABC execs saw footage of the incident that they decided not to air her season.
Still, Mills stands by the decision to cast her as Bachelorette.
“I had met with Taylor. She had said, ‘Look, I’m raising three kids with different fathers; one, I have a phenomenal co-parenting relationship with. The other one is a challenge, but I’m really looking for a partner and somebody who can help me,’” he shared.
“Her motives were really very sincere,” he continued.
“Walking into that, that was a really exciting story to tell through the lens of The Bachelorette. Obviously, with everything that happened and everything everyone’s going through, that’s the hard part. Everything that Taylor’s had to go through has been really hard. The season itself is really, really fantastic. It was a great journey for her.”
Mills also confirmed that Paul’s other reality show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, has resumed production.
“There’s not much to say, other than we are clear to go back into production,” he said.
“That does not mean we’re filming tomorrow. It just means production is resuming, and we’re trying to see what that looks like.”
Mills added that producers’ top priority is Taylor, and they’re working to ensure that “as a human being, on a personal level she’s being taken care of.”
“What shooting looks like will be decided later,” he continued.
“Everything is still kind of day to day — this was just an announcement that we are just going back into production. That’s a process. Because we’ve been down for so long, we have to figure out what this season is even going to look like. What are the storylines?”
Mills refuted rumors that Disney was holding off on making a production decision until they knew if Paul would be charged with felony assault.
“It was just simply making sure that we were really being careful and thoughtful and working with the entire cast, as well as producers, and making sure everybody felt this was the right decision all around,” he said.
There are rumors on social media that ABC has already set a premiere date for Taylor’s season of The Bachelorette, but those appear to be baseless.

Almost immediately after quietly filing for divorce, Shannon Elizabeth announced her OnlyFans plans.

As of Monday, April 27, she officially reached the “seven figures” mark — according to the tabloid’s source.
There were even details on how her earnings came in.
“Over half of that was earned through direct messages to OnlyFans users,” the insider explained.
The source continued: “While tips and posts accounted for the rest.”
Elizabeth’s OnlyFans page does not charge a subscription fee.
Most pages that aren’t just promo-pages do, charging anywhere from a few dollars to more than $20.

The U.S. Department of Labor is asking a U.S. District Judge to require a Fairbanks-area gold mine to allow a federal inspection. It’s the second time the department has asked.
The Department of Labor and Alaska Goldmine LLC owners Sheldon Maier and Janne Maier have been engaged in a years-long legal battle since the Mine Safety and Health Administration accused them of refusing to allow inspectors onto the property in 2022, according to court documents.
Alaska Goldmine LLC mines gold ore around Pedro Creek, north of Fairbanks off the Steese Highway, not far from where Felix Pedro first discovered gold in the region in 1902.
The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 requires mines to be inspected for health and safety conditions yearly.
Its owners claimed the mine was no longer operational, but according to court documents, inspectors saw heavy digging machines moving at the site and several passenger cars parked at the mine in September 2025. Inspectors flew over the mine in a helicopter later in September but did not see anyone at the site.
Alaska State Troopers informed an inspector in September 2025 that the Maiers accused the inspector of criminal trespass and threatened to arrest the inspector if he went back onto the property without a court order.
The plaintiff claims that the Maiers’ failure to allow inspectors to inspect the property “constitutes a continuing threat to the safety and health of the miners and other persons in or about the mine site.”
Janne Maier told the Alaska Beacon by email Monday that she and Sheldon Maier have retired and are no longer operating the mine after a 2023 ruling from a federal judge. They had not received the summons, as of Monday.
Maier said that they are using their private property, not state land, off the Steese Highway where they haul material to their Fairbanks home for landscaping. No commercial or mining activity is taking place on their private property, she said.
“As we are not engaged in commerce at our current property, and as we are not licensed for any mineral extraction operation or gravel operation, the MSHA agency has no authority to inspect our private property,” she wrote.
These developments come after several years of contention between the parties that began in August 2022, when the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the Labor Department received an anonymous tip that alleged Alaska Goldmine LLC was an unregistered mining operation. Investigators visited the mine in August and September 2022 to conduct safety and health inspections, but court documents stated that Maier blocked them from entering the mine both times. Investigators reported that they flew over the mine in a helicopter and saw pieces of equipment used for gold mining that showed the site was an active mine.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration issued 17 citations totaling $8,134 in penalties to Alaska Goldmine LLC, according to MSHA data. Inspectors also issued an order to halt operations until miners provide proof of new miner training, but they say they saw moving mining equipment at the mine in June 2023.
Inspectors claimed that the mine had up to three employees. Sheldon and Janne Maier wrote in an application to mine on state lands in 2020 and in an email to the Mine Safety and Health Administration officials in July 2023 that they have no employees, and that friends that visit the mine and stay in the trailer are not employees.
In 2023, a federal judge issued an order preventing Maier from operating the mine without an inspection and without proper miner safety training.
Sheldon Maier denied the allegations in a local radio show in April 2023. He said he stopped communicating with the inspectors after they visited his mine on multiple occasions.
“I have 17 egregious safety violations waiting for me,” he said on the radio show.
Janne Maier filed a lawsuit against four inspectors in September 2023, stating that the inspectors violated the coupler’s fourth amendment rights by searching the mine without their permission or a warrant on multiple occasions over a seven year period.
“The MSHA agency has a longstanding history of abusing their mandate and misusing public funds to conduct harassment and coercion against small mine business owners without providing a warrant or evidence of a complaint,” Janne Maier wrote.
The case against the inspectors was dismissed after a judge found that the summons was not properly served.
Both parties agreed to dismiss the case against the operation in October 2024 after Maier wrote that they were no longer mining. However, inspectors say that is no longer the case.
Attorneys for Acting Labor Secretary Keith E. Sonderling filed the federal request for an injunction on April 24 and the case was assigned to Judge Aaron Christian Peterson.
