NOTN- Juneau’s Assembly narrowly rejected a plan during last night’s Committee of the Whole work session, to carve up the city-owned Telephone Hill property and sell most of it “as is,” choosing instead to stay the course for the time being.
“So spending time with all of you, a lot lately with the budget, and spending a lot of time in the office with budget stuff and the flood coming upon us, and an election coming upon us, I think it’s nice to get Telephone Hill off our plate.” Mayor Beth Weldon said, “However, my main reason for doing this is just the public outcry not to spend any more money on Telephone Hill.”
On a 5–4 vote last night, members voted down Weldon’s proposal to divide Telephone Hill into three lots, reserve one for potential Coast Guard or workforce housing, and sell the other two with existing homes still standing.
The draft plan envisioned minimum bids of about $1 million and $2 million for the properties.
Members argued the change would undercut years of planning for higher-density housing in the downtown core at a time when the city faces a severe housing shortage and an influx of Coast Guard families. Several members said splitting up the property now could limit the city’s ability to pursue a cohesive, larger-scale project.
“I object to this. It’s funny, I object to this on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to start.” Said Assembly member Alicia Hughes-Skandijs,”I don’t want to put words in your mouth, but my read on the motion that passed at the last meeting was to bring this back and talk about, where are we going? Do we still feel good? How are we going to get there? And then we have this from the mayor, I will say crazy idea with love, I wouldn’t say that to anyone else. I don’t understand at the heart of this, the sponsor statement is that this is about not spending any more funding on this project, this seems to try to care for other issues, which is to leave some of that land back to where it might not turn into what our current plans are for it. It does preserve a small amount for our housing goals, but even that, I don’t see how that coincides with the goal of not spending any more money. I don’t see this, if that is indeed your intended goal, as the best way to move forward with that.”
In a separate 5–4 vote, the Assembly agreed not to award a roughly $2.3 million demolition contract until after it sees responses to a Request for Qualifications from potential developers, expected later this year.
“I understand and see where the mayor is trying to go.” Said Deputy Mayor Greg Smith, “This has been a challenge for us. I have an idea, I would move, or someone else could move, to not award the bill to demolish until after the results of the RFQ have been returned, to see what people think and hear and, you know, get real proposals on how to develop this, see what can be done. There is uncertainty now that will provide more, getting the RFQ back, because this could be a transformative project for downtown and for our housing crisis.”
The city is also defending a lawsuit filed by several Assembly members seeking to halt demolition; a jury trial is set for August, though no court order currently blocks the work.

On Monday, an AI-generated photo of Donald Trump as Jesus Christ created a tremendous amount of controversy on social media.
Even some of Trump’s most outspoken critics were quick to call out what they saw as a post that was at best insensitive and at worst downright blasphemous.
One of those supporters was Riley Gaines, the competitive swimmer who transformed herself into a political commentator after losing to a trans woman in a race.

“Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he’d post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?” Gaines wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the president’s tweet.
“Either way, two things are true. 1) a little humility would serve him well 2) God shall not be mocked.”
Of course, humility is not exactly Trump’s strong suit, and he responded to the criticism by expressing his disdain for Gaines:
“I didn’t listen to Riley Gaines. I’m not a big fan of Riley, actually,” Trump told CBS News this week.
Rather than keep the war of words going, Gaines furiously backpedaled and declared her undying love for Trump:
“I love the President, and I’m so grateful he’s in the Oval Office. Of course, I’ll continue to support him and the America First agenda,” she posted, adding:
“At the end of the day, I do nothing for the approval of man. Our purpose on this earth is to glorify Him in all we do. The truth social post missed the mark. It’s now deleted. Amazing!
We’re imperfect people. I know I am. I don’t get my feelings hurt easy and I know with the President it’s really not personal. I want to spend eternity in a real place called Heaven. I’d love for Trump to be there too.
“Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. I’ll keep doing my part by speaking truth & doing my best to lead others to Christ.”
For obvious reasons, Gaines was brutally roasted for her abrupt change of heart.
“Trump attacks Riley Gaines online and she immediately confesses her love for him. This is precisely how cults work,” wrote one user.
“This is the one thing about MAGA that still genuinely confuses me; how they all think that they will be the One Special Follower who he won’t throw under the bus,” another added.
“Trump publicly humiliated Riley and her response is to stoop lower, kiss his feet. That’s the price of being in MAGA. You are not allowed to keep your dignity,” a third chimed in.
“A mass-murdering serial rapist and pedophile disrespected your religion and called you a loser, and your response is to bow down and kiss his feet,” a fourth wrote, adding:
“I hope you know people see that you literally stand for nothing if it takes away from your grift. Sold your soul for this.”
Needless to say, Riley has not responded to any of this criticism.
At this point, we assume she’s meeting with her team and trying to figure out how she can continue to make money as a MAGA influencer now that the head of the movement has publicly declared that she sucks.

Thomas Rhett is celebrating a major career milestone as “Ain’t A Bad Life,” featuring Jordan Davis, tops the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart, earning him his 25th No. 1 single.
The achievement marks a landmark moment in the country star’s career, one he says he never could have imagined.
“‘Hitting 25 No. Ones is something I never could’ve dreamed up,” Thomas Rhett shared. “‘Ain’t A Bad Life’ is one of those songs that just makes you smile, and getting to share it with my buddy Jordan Davis made it even more special. I’m really grateful to the fans, country radio, and everyone who’s been on this ride with me—this one means a lot.”

The song was sent to country radio in September and became the most-added single upon its release. It was also one of the first tracks developed for his latest project, beginning with the line, “I didn’t win the lotto, but the dawgs won.”
The idea to bring Davis in came naturally, as the two have been longtime friends and previously toured together.
“Me and Jordan have just become really, really close over the last year, whether that’s through having a bunch of kids or we duck hunt together, we see each other a lot,” Rhett previously explained. “This song just sounded like a Jordan song to me. And me and him had never done a collaboration before…I think it’s going to be a good one for both of us to be able to play separately on the road, and hopefully we get to play this thing together at some point in time.”
“Ain’t A Bad Life” was written by Thomas Rhett alongside Ashley Gorley, Blake Pendergrass, John Byron, and Mark Trussell. The track serves as the third No. 1 from his latest album, About A Woman (Deluxe), following “Beautiful As You” and “After All The Bars Are Closed.”
The milestone also comes as Rhett prepares to hit the road for his upcoming THE SOUNDTRACK TO LIFE TOUR, set to visit more than 20 cities. The tour kicks off July 9 in Nashville and wraps October 24.
This tour will feature ERNEST, Kashus Culpepper, Zach John King, Vincent Mason and Conner Smith on select dates, while Emily Ann Roberts is set to open each night of the tour.

“I’ve always believed a great song can take you right back to a moment—your first love, the last day of school, that summer you never wanted to end—and that’s what I hope the fans take away from our shows this summer,” Thomas Rhett shared in a statement. “And for me, there couldn’t be a better way to kick off tour than at home in Nashville. I can’t wait to hit the road with this crew of insanely talented artists and make some memories.”
Most recently Thomas Rhett teamed up with Marshmello on the new single, “Where We Go.”
