University of Alaska Anchorage interim chancellor appointed to permanent role

The University of Alaska president appointed Cheryl Siemers to the permanent role as University of Alaska Anchorage chancellor, following ten months serving as interim chancellor, the university announced on Wednesday.

UA President Pat Pitney appointed Siemers to the interim role last May after former Alaska governor Sean Parnell retired, and then extended her tenure in October. Pitney said the decision followed an extensive hiring process, and after reviewing the four finalists and community and stakeholder feedback, decided to extend Siemer’s interim term to provide “needed certainty and consistency at the leadership level.”

Siemers will step into the permanent chancellor role on March 8. UAA serves an estimated 12,000 students on the Anchorage campus, at the Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College, Matanuska-Susitna College and Prince William Sound College.

“She’s been embraced by the UAA community, and it’s clear that her continued leadership will provide critical institutional stability and forward momentum,” Pitney said in a statement with the announcement on Wednesday.

“Cheryl has been a steady hand at the wheel for UAA; her commitment to the institution, community partnership, leading enrollment growth, and enthusiastic support for UAA’s dual mission vocational and workforce training make her the ideal person to continue leading UA’s largest institution,” Pitney said.

A spokesperson for the university said that Siemers’ salary information as chancellor was not immediately available on Wednesday.

Siemers thanked the university for its confidence in her leadership.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve our students, faculty, staff and university community,” Siemers said in a statement on Wednesday. “Stepping into the permanent role now offers the opportunity to extend continuity with a long-term strategic focus to ensure that the progress we’ve made together accelerates forward.”

Prior to the UAA interim chancellor position, Siemers served as the director of UAA’s Kenai Peninsula College. She joined the college in 2002, and taught as an adjunct then full-time faculty member in the Department of English, then as assistant director before becoming director of the college. She holds a master’s in English from UAA and a Ph.D. in rhetoric and linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Eaglecrest’s future tied to Gondola plan as budget pressures continue

NOTN- Leaders of Juneau’s Eaglecrest Ski Area told city officials last night they are facing mounting financial and maintenance challenges, even as they press ahead with plans for a gondola and expanded summer operations to make the resort self-sustaining.

Meeting jointly with the Juneau Assembly, Eaglecrest board members and managers described aging infrastructure, declining season-pass sales and heavy reliance on city support that now pushes the ski area into a negative fund balance.

Board chair Brandon Cullum said the ski area is still recovering from a string of poor snow years, lift problems and price increases that have shaken public confidence.

“I think that the idea of restoring confidence is key,” Cullum said. “It may not be any one thing, but we’ve lived through a bit of a perfect storm here.”

Eaglcrest officials told the city that Eaglecrest opened 61 days so far this season, compared with 86 budgeted days, and has recorded about 305 inches of snowfall. While recent storms have helped, operations remains vulnerable to the inconsistent weather and equipment failures.

Aging lifts are at the top of the worry list. Many of Eaglecrest’s chairlifts are older models, built by a company that shut down in 2003.

“We’ve worked really hard through the summer, through the fall and even through this winter, things are costing us a little bit more, and we are trying to be mindful and responsible on what we’re focusing on.” Said Acting general manager Erin Lupro, “We have some aging infrastructure at Eaglecrest, between lifts, buildings, even our parking lot with those fun little dips that you experience in the upper lot. One of the things that I definitely lose sleep about is the lifts.”

Board member Jim Calvin walked officials through the financial trends, saying season-pass prices have risen sharply in recent years while adult, teen and youth pass sales all declined.

“We would achieve a break-even status in FY 32 or 33 again, under a certain set of assumptions about the gondola being built and being online.” Calvin said

Offcials said the ski area’s long-term strategy hinges the gondola and developing summer attractions aimed at Juneau’s roughly 2 million annual visitors, most of them cruise passengers. He said, expanded summer business could eventually eliminate the ski area’s need for general fund subsidies.

Until then, Eagle Crest is drawing heavily on city support.

Staffing is another challenge.

Officials said the mountain has the equivalent of just over seven full-time positions vacant, representing about 22 individual jobs, including three year-round posts.

The looming decision, board members acknowledged, is what happens if the city decides not to proceed with the gondola, or no longer allows Eagle Crest to operate with a negative fund balance.

“With the maintenance requirements, with our operating cost, with revenue where we anticipate it to be, to not carry a negative fund balance not only hobbles our ability to position ourselves for summer operations, but it hobbles our ability to contemplate winter operations,” Cullum said. “It’s definitely a question of whether we could continue to operate.”

Board members said they will provide the Assembly with a prioritized capital project list and are seeking to hire a professional mountain recreation planner to craft a detailed strategic and business plan for Eaglecrest’s future.

The Assembly is scheduled to receive a separate, in‑depth presentation on the gondola project April 1.

Bills Find Their Big-Name WR, Will Reportedly Trade for Bears Standout DJ Moore

After multiple years of lackluster production at wide receiver, the Buffalo Bills have acquired a pass catcher that could help Josh Allen in a major way. The Bills will acquire wide receiver DJ Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears, ESPN reported Thursday. Chicago will receive a second-round pick in the 2026 draft for Moore, according to NFL Media. The Bears will also reportedly give up a fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft. Moore, who’ll turn 29 in April, has consistently produced in his eight-year career, logging four seasons of at least 1,000 receiving yards. His 682 receiving yards this past season were actually a career low, but it was also likely the result of Bears head coach Ben Johnson’s run-heavy offense. Other playmakers also emerged for Chicago in the passing game last season, like rookie tight end Colston Loveland. As for Buffalo, it had been on the search for a wide receiver with high potential since it traded Stefon Diggs in the 2024 offseason. While Allen arguably played his best football over the last two seasons, he’s done so without much help in the passing game. Khalil Shakir has been the Bills’ leading receiver in each of the last two seasons, but he’s failed to reach the 900-yard mark in his career. Keon Coleman, whom the Bills took in the second round of the 2024 draft, has largely struggled in his career, logging just 960 receiving yards in 26 games. The trade allows Moore to reunite with new Bills head coach Joe Brady. Moore and Brady spent two seasons together with the Carolina Panthers, as the latter worked as their offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021. Moore posted over 1,100 receiving yards in both years, recording 2,350 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 32 games. Moore has 608 receptions for 8,213 yards and 41 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons since getting taken with the 24th pick in the 2018 draft. The deal can’t be made official until the new league year opens on March 11. The Associated Press contributed to this report.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports

Britney Spears Arrested on DUI Charges

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We have shocking news out of Los Angeles today, as Britney Spears has been arrested on DUI charges.

The pop icon was handcuffed and taken into custody after being arrested in Ventura County, California Wednesday night.

She was reportedly booked at 3 am and released just after 6 am this morning.

According to TMZ, Britney was pulled over at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday night.

It’s unclear what may have prompted police to pull her over.

A source tells TMZ that Britney was taken to the hospital to have her blood drawn after her arrest. The source also claims that Spears’ BAC was .06, which is under the legal limit of .08, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Spears is scheduled for a court date on May 4, at which time she will presumably enter her plea.

Britney appears to have deleted her Instagram account in the wake of her arrest.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” Spears’ manager, Cade Hudson, tells TMZ.

“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

This is not the first time that Britney has been in trouble with the law, nor is it the first time that she has been suspected of driving under the influence.

In October of last year, Page Six revealed video of Spears leaving a restaurant in Thousand Oaks, California and entering her BMW as several people apparently tried to stop her.

In 2007, she faced misdemeanor charges in connection with an alleged hit-and-run in Los Angeles.

The charges were dropped after Britney paid off the owner of the other car, and her trial for driving without a license resulted in a mistrial due to a hung jury.

However, the incident was one of the factors that led to Spears’ conservatorship and the loss of custody of her two children.

Britney spent several years under the control of her father and other parties after a judge determined that she was unable to properly care for herself.

The conservatorship was finally lifted in 2021. The situation gained widespread media attention, with many fans and activists calling for Spears to be freed.

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Jodie Sweetin Trashes Her ‘Opposite’ Candace Cameron Bure

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Is it a Full House feud or just two former coworkers who are on opposite sides of every pressing issue?

Every now and then, the Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure conflict arises.

Jodie’s talking about it now.

Calling herself “loud” and “outspoken,” she’s explaining why they’ll never see eye-to-eye.

On the ‘Only Child With Bob The Drag Queen’ podcast, Jodie Sweetin touches on serious and light topics. (Image Credit: YouTube)

It’s been a long time since ‘Full House’

During a recent episode of the Only Child With Bob The Drag Queen podcast, Jodie Sweetin delved into a slew of topics.

Obviously, one of them was Full House.

Talking about the Olsen twins was delicate but fairly easy.

She praised them for their work ethic while also mourning their lost childhoods. She worked for 8 years as a kid, but they built a media empire as children.

Then came the more delicate topic: Candace Cameron Bure.

Jodie Sweetin and Bob The Drag Queen are definitely being a little more polite than they need to be as they bring up Candace Cameron Bure.

Famously, comedian Dave Chappelle has become a reactionary, particularly with regard to his outspoken transphobia.

For many, he has become a symbol of the fall from being a beloved celebrity name to just being another bigot.

Bob alludes to that when he comments: “Candace has gone a little Dave Chappelle-y, too.”

Making a vocalization that indicates that one is choosing one’s words carefully, Jodie

“Candace does her thing,” Jodie then states. “And I …”

While Bob laughs, Jodie elaborates.

‘If that ain’t you, that ain’t you’

“You know, we sit on very opposite sides of things,” Jodie acknowledged.

This refers to political matters and social issues.

“And I’m just kind of a loud, outspoken bitch about a lot of things,” Jodie characterized relatably.

“And,” she affirmed, “that’s not going to stop me.”

Jodie then sagely summarized: “And if that ain’t you, that ain’t you.”

Considering their differences, Jodie was being very tasteful there.

Jodie has used her platform for good, even getting thrown to the ground while protesting for human rights.

Meanwhile, Candace has also joined the fight for human rights … on the opposing side.

In addition to her sadly unsurprising takes on state-mandated birth, LGBTQ+ rights, and more, Candace also has a history of making odd, inflammatory statements.

For example, she flipped out about the Olympics opening ceremony a couple of years ago. She also once claimed that watching horror films could open “spiritual portals” in one’s home.

Candace has made countless choices to be who she is today

Candace’s older brother, Kirk Cameron, is also infamous. Both were converts to Christianity at young ages.

Finding new beliefs — be it a religion, a political alignment, or a lack of religion — as an adolescent can be a powerful rite of passage.

But some converts bring a sort of radical aggression that can drive off former friends and colleagues — which, in turn, may make them double and triple down, or drive them into further extremes.

Candace has chosen to be many things. Unfortunately, a good person does not seem to be one of them. There are millions of Christians who are decent, wonderful people, so that’s on Candace.

Jodie, meanwhile, has chosen to be a great person and to consistently use her platform for good.
