NOTN- The deadline for Residents living in the historic Telephone Hill neighborhood passed Saturday, and the city will move forward with plans to demolish the houses in December.
“Most of it just comes down to trying to get housing downtown.” said Weldon, “So instead of 14 units, we’re looking for over 100 units, its a leap of faith.”
Opponents who have been testifying over the past few months and who have collected over 800 signatures opposing the redevelopment plan have criticized the plan’s cost and the displacement of current residents, highlighting that no developer has yet signed on.
“They have been very good with their testimony, very heartfelt, agonizing testimony.” Said the Mayor.
The city maintains that the redevelopment is necessary to address Juneau’s housing shortage.
“We do have a timeline. This is a tough topic for people, because we are doing evictions, but in the spirit of trying to get more housing downtown.” Weldon said.
The Juneau Assembly paused the eviction process in October after city officials said proper legal procedures weren’t followed, with at least one tenant not receiving proper notice of eviction.
“It was determined that our property manager had not taken appropriate evidence or proof of posting eviction notices.” Said Deputy Mayor Greg Smith, “Legally, and to make sure that was all correct, we extended that to November 1. Obviously, this is a very challenging situation.”
The Assembly has appropriated $5.5 million toward the redevelopment.
City leaders say the redevelopment plans remain on track and the Assembly will take up the issue again tomorrow night at 6 p.m. to discuss demolition timelines, developer options and more community concerns.

Questions about the authenticity (you’ll see) of photos that Lizzo herself shared have cropped up.
She’s getting a lot of questions — and, in some cases, fans are hitting the unfollow button. What’s going on?
Is Lizzo pregnant?
In the evening on Thursday, October 30, Lizzo kicked off Halloween a little early with an Instagram post.
“Halloween is so cheesy,” she captioned the post.
Lizzo tagged the restaurant chain, Chili’s, in the caption.
The image itself showcased a small mozzarella stick — the same kind served at Chili’s, research tells us — in her hands and an image of a larger one behind her.
In the post itself, Lizzo appears to be wearing a dress made of stringy mozzarella cheese.
Obviously, mozzarella sticks are one of the world’s most wonderful foods.
They very in shape, size, and density, but all are perfect creations.
However, these posts sparked speculation that Lizzo might be pregnant.
After her dramatic weight loss journey — which was in and of itself controversial — she looked curvier in this cheesy look.
Was the cheese adding more curve than is really there? Is she pregnant? Or was there an entirely new controversy creating the semblance of a different silhouette?
Oh no, did Lizzo use AI?
Some took a close look at these photos and did not come away with the impression that Lizzo is pregnant.
Instead, they accused the rapper of creating these images with generative “AI” technology.
Gen AI is deservedly controversial, particularly when it comes to rendering images.
In addition to this technology being massively environmentally destructive, rendering images means stealing the work of photographers and actual artists — and also cheating actual artists out of work that they could have done.
Simply put, there is no ethical use for generative AI image creation, just like writing and those sad “AI girlfriends.” It’s all terrible — and thus prompted backlash at Lizzo.

Truth be told, it’s not immediately clear if this image uses generative AI.
We’re not just saying this because we like Lizzo. The singer is perfectly capable of controversy and we’ve acknowledged that before.
However, it is conceivable that she wore an outfit underneath a facsimile of cheese. There are materials, including some body-safe “slimes,” that can give off the appearance of melted mozzarella.
(Think of it as the reverse of the “everything is cake” trend)
In fact, one of the photos appears to show a flash of sneaker, as if the material has split during the photo shoot and revealed a little of Lizzo’s shoe. That said … we cannot rule out generative AI entirely.
What is the truth?
Unfortunately, we cannot declare with absolute certainty that there is no use of gen AI. We hope that there isn’t.
Many of us have never once engaged with the technology due to ethical concerns (and general disinterest in what critics refer to as scams), and we’d love for Lizzo to be in the same boat.
Perhaps more to the point, there is no evidence that Lizzo is pregnant.
The outfit would explain her looking slightly different. We’re talking layers of costume.
And if there were generative AI involved … well, we’re talking about a faulty technology that gets almost everything wrong. This absurd tech that’s seemingly poised to tank the economy as soon as the bubble bursts could easily add some pounds to someone.

A rather unique set of wedding bells rang on Friday night for 1,000-Lb Sisters cast member Amy Slaton.
In news broken by People Magazine, the reality star married Brian Lovelorn at Talbott Tavern, a historic restaurant and inn in Bardstown, Kentucky that some folks believe to be haunted.
As previously reported, the newlyweds just happened to also get engaged inside the padded room of a haunted house.
“My wedding is a dream finally coming true,” Slaton told People after exchanging vows. “I’m getting my happily ever after!”
According to this 38-year old, the wedding was themed “Victorian meets light gray meets dusty blue and white.”
The TLC personality’s handmade artwork was also on display, alongside “moons everywhere,” as Slaton added to the aforementioned outlet:
“I deeply cherished the journey of wedding planning, embracing the art and location hunting, but selecting bridesmaids and groomsmen proved to be a profound challenge.
“Yet I intuitively knew that my extraordinary friend Ollisha [Davis] (Lee Lee) would graciously accept the esteemed honor of being my maid of honor, even before I extended the heartfelt invitation.”
Lovvorn popped his major question after just five months of dating — and, instead of a diamond, he presented Slaton with two skeleton hands forming a heart.
Amy finalized her divorce from Michael Halterman in the fall of 2023.
Former high school sweethearts, the ex-spouses share two young sons and were married for about four years… but insiders indicated two years ago that the addition of these kids sadly screwed with their romantic dynamic.
On an episode of 1000-Lb Sisters that aired in February 2023, for example, fans were given a glimpse of where things had gone wrong between the spouses, as Michael sat around drinking while Amy was left to care for the aforementioned toddlers.
“You’re not supposed to be doing this sh-t by yourself,” sister Amanda said to Amy while offering assistance at the time.
“You are married and have a husband, and he is supposed to be being a dad too.”
That was then, however. As for now?
“Getting married means that I’m no longer lonely because I’ve discovered my soulmate, Brian, is my happy place!” Amy went on to People.
“Once you get to know him, you’ll find him to be the sweetest, most caring person you’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing! Not only did he capture my heart, but he also won over my boys and not many men out there will accept a single mom with two energetic boys!”
Slaton and Lovvorn met at a concert in the park… with the former saying the latter was “the one” when he met her sons Gage Deon, 4, and Glenn Allen, 2.
“They just took to him naturally, he just fit perfectly in our family,” Slaton said this summer. “He fits perfectly in the life I’ve always wanted.”
It does seem worth mentioning here Slaton and her now-husband were arrested last summer for drug possession and child endangerment.
Slaton later pleaded guilty to one count and agreed to a probation deal.
Looking ahead, Amy’s wedding will be featured on an upcoming episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters.
“I’m excited for TLC viewers to see my beautiful bride, and also the cool venue,” Lovvorn said to People, adding this week:
“The next chapter is Amy continuing to do art and hopefully I can start to cover sports while doing some kind of writing. This and, of course, raise the boys the best we can.”
