‘Live In New Orleans’: Maze feat. Frankie Beverly’s Landmark Live Album

Maintaining a foothold in popular music is nearly impossible, yet Frankie Beverly and Maze entertained audiences all over the world for decades. Their classic 1970s and 1980s catalog was rife with timeless musical moods and lyrics that transcend eras. Quite simply, Maze created beautiful music that rounds off the edges of rough days.

Maze got their big break when they met Marvin Gaye. The Motown superstar mentored them and made them his opening act in their early years. Their 1976 debut album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, was gold-certified and spawned the hits “Happy Feelin’s” and “Lady of Magic.” Three more chart-topping albums followed, establishing Maze as a mainstay on R&B radio stations.

While their studio albums touched the ears of music lovers through radio and vinyl, the magic of Maze truly came alive onstage. “I mean, we’ve really come from the bottom line, which is a working act, and that’s why that live album is so good,” explained Frankie Beverly in the NME in 1982. “In the studio, it’s harder to make that energy happen, it doesn’t come so naturally.” The live album Beverly was referring to? Live in New Orleans, recorded on November 14th and 15th, 1980 at the historic Saenger Theatre.

Beverly chose New Orleans, a Southern city celebrated more for its musical past than for its then-present instead of coastal entertainment hubs like New York and Los Angeles. Recording in New Orleans was an acknowledgment of the love Maze consistently received from the city. “I never thought we’d do well in the South. We weren’t funky like Cameo. We had that California thing. We did songs… [But it was] like we were born and raised [in New Orleans]. It was like a disease here,” Beverly told The Times-Picayune in 2013. He’s said countless times – whether true or not – that the majority of sales of Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly came from the New Orleans area.

By the time they recorded Live in New Orleans, Maze had four certified gold albums, and a string of R&B hit songs that included “Southern Girl,” “Feel that You’re Feelin,” and “Workin’ Together.” Much like James Brown’s push to record and release his groundbreaking 1963 live album, Live at the Apollo, Beverly understood that capturing the magic that happens onstage at a Maze concert was the closest way to recording the full Maze experience. By the early 1980s, Maze were an incredibly tight live band, with a chill take on R&B and soul that placed them alongside groups like Kool and the Gang, as opposed to the intergalactic funk of Parliament-Funkadelic. Maze were intentionally low-key and unfussy in their stage presence.

Nonetheless, what they put to record in 1980 was special. The live performance of “Happy Feelin’s” nearly eclipsed the studio version in popularity. And the moment where the audience takes over “Joy and Pain” and Beverly leads them in an acapella rendition of the chorus is transcendent. In an interview, Beverly once said that “The Saenger crowd “gave us a classic record.”

Upon its 1981 release, Live in New Orleans became Maze’s fifth gold-certified album and rose to #3 on the Billboard R&B chart and #32 on the Billboard US chart. But beyond the numbers, the cultural impact of Maze is even more impressive in an era where many of the bands from the 1970s began downsizing or struggled to stay afloat, Live in New Orleans solidified Maze’s position as one of the premiere R&B touring for decades to come.

The album also served as a prelude to Maze’s long-term relationship with New Orleans. Throughout the next few decades, the group became a regular closing headliner at the annual Essence Festival. There, Maze played to 40,000 fans of different generations who all clamored for their hit songs with the same energy as the Saenger theater audience did in 1980. As noted local DJ Melissa Weber once put it, “As a child… [they were] the biggest band in New Orleans… I had no idea until I was older that Maze and Frankie Beverly were, in fact, not from New Orleans at all.”

While the album is a live album, it includes four studio recordings at the end. One tune, “Before I Let Go,” went on to become what some call the unofficial “Black national anthem” because it’s played at weddings, barbecues, family reunions, Historically Black College homecomings, and many other joyous occasions. But Live in New Orleans is all about the live performances, an album that shows us why live music will always matter.

Klay Thompson Defends Megan Thee Stallion Over Patrick Beverley & Jason Williams’ Disrespect

Klay Thompson does not play ’bout his girlfriend, Megan Thee Stallion. The NBA star clapped back at Patrick Beverley and former player Jason Williams after the two made crude and corny remarks about the rapper during a recent episode of their Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ podcast.

Apparently, Thompson’s slow start to the 2025-26 NBA season…it can’t just be a slow start. Williams suggested that Megan might be to blame for the Klay’s dip in performance. “I’m from West Virginia, man. I’ve been taught a lot by some old folks, some old white folks,” Williams said. “It only takes one p###y to drag a battleship across the desert. That’s how powerful it is…I ain’t saying that’s what it is, but that might be what it is.”

Sounds really silly…and quite possibly sexist.

The comment quickly drew backlash online. You know Klay was not going to stay silent.

“Referring to my GF as a ‘p###y’ is so disgusting and disturbing,” he wrote. “Especially from someone who played in the NBA. How would yall feel if I referred to your wives in such a way? Do better fellas. Very disappointing.”

Here are the original comments for you to see and hear.

The Golden State Warriors legend, who joined the Mavericks earlier this year, has been publicly dating Megan Thee Stallion for several months. The couple’s relationship has drawn major attention both inside and outside of sports. Most of us, minus the fans of Tory, love Megan and she continues to dominate. Klay might be moving into a new phase.

Fans online praised b-ball brother for standing up for Megan and calling out the misogyny…especially high-profile Black women. J. Will might not be doing him any favors with his West Virginia bragging Females are blamed too much for the failings of the male athlete. I could see if this was Mike Tyson or something.

As of now, the men or the podcast have not responded to Klay’s remarks. If they do, I doubt I will care enough to cover it, but if Megan says something, I definitely will.

Drake Debuts Fresh Curly Hairstyle & Triggers The Internet

Drake pulled up on the ‘Gram this week with a new curly ’do and a caption that had people squinting at their screens like it was a riddle from the Sphinx.

The Toronto rapper appeared in what looked like a studio session, sporting tight curls that instantly drew comparisons to Benny Blanco.

It wasn’t just the hair, though; he threw in one of his signature cryptic captions that read, “To each their own…unless of course they lease and don’t own.”

So now people are in full decoding mode, trying to figure out if that’s a jab, a flex, or a teaser for something cooking in the lab.

This all lines up with the whispers around his long-awaited album ICEMAN, which was rumored to drop late October or early November. That didn’t happen, obviously, but folks are still on edge waiting for it.

Even Johnny Manziel swore it was coming around Halloween. Guess not.

Drake’s been doing his usual social media chess moves, liking ICEMAN-related posts, sliding into timelines with subtle hints and basically fanning the flames around the album’s release. No date yet, but industry heads think it could still drop sometime in 2025.

This would be his first big solo drop since his lyrical slugfest with Kendrick Lamar and a bunch of legal headaches, including his most recent lawsuit filed by Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti, who claims Drake jacked his “Amerigun” photo concept for the “What Did I Miss?” video.

Security Guard Demands New Trial, Citing Cardi B Pen Throwing Incident

Cardi B is once again at the center of a courtroom clash as former security guard Emani Ellis pushes for a new trial in Los Angeles after losing her $24 million lawsuit against the Hip-Hop star in September 2025.

Ellis’s legal team filed a motion on October 31 alleging the original trial was tainted by judicial missteps, including the judge’s decision to allow two witnesses to testify.

According to court records obtained by TMZ, Ellis claims those testimonies unfairly influenced the jury. But Cardi B‘s attorneys fired back, pointing out that Ellis had previously tried to recruit one of those same witnesses to support her own case.

The original lawsuit stemmed from a 2018 confrontation where Ellis, who was then working security, accused the rapper of physically attacking her.

The allegations included being hit in the face and body, spat on and verbally insulted. After just two days of testimony, the jury took roughly an hour to return a unanimous verdict clearing Cardi B of all assault and battery claims.

Ellis’s motion also referenced Cardi B’s brief altercation with a reporter outside the courthouse during the trial.

Her lawyers argued that the pen-throwing incident may have influenced jurors and warranted further examination. Cardi B’s team dismissed that angle, saying the jury had been explicitly instructed to focus only on the evidence presented in court.

“This is a last-ditch effort to revive a case that was thoroughly examined and fairly decided,” Cardi B’s attorneys argued, labeling the retrial request as meritless.

Ellis faces an uphill battle. In civil appeals, the burden falls on the losing party to prove that significant procedural errors occurred and directly impacted the outcome. Without that, courts are unlikely to overturn the original ruling.

The trial’s swift conclusion in September allowed Cardi B to move forward with her career and personal life.

After her courtroom win, Cardi B made it clear she wouldn’t tolerate lawsuits she considers baseless. She vowed to pursue legal action against anyone attempting to use the courts for what she described as “cash grabs.”

Cardi B Welcomes Fourth Child & Promises Her Best Era Yet

Cardi B introduced her fourth child and first with Stefon Diggs on Thursday, announcing the birth in a heartfelt Instagram post that also marked a personal and professional rebirth for the Grammy-winning rapper.

The Bronx native, 33, reflected on her evolution as an artist and mother while sharing the news with her 169 million followers.

“My life has always been a combination of different chapters and different seasons. My last chapter was the beginning of a new season. Starting over is never easy but it’s been so worth it! I brought new music and a new album to the world! A new baby into my world, and one more reason to be the best version of me, one more reason to love me more than anything else or anyone else so I can continue giving my babies the love and life they deserve,” she wrote.

View this post on Instagram

The announcement comes just months after Cardi confirmed her pregnancy during a September appearance on CBS Mornings, where she said, “I am having a baby with my boyfriend.”

This marks the fourth child for the “WAP” rapper, who shares daughter Kulture, born in July 2018, son Wave, born in September 2021 and daughter Blossom, born in September 2024, with her ex-husband Offset.

Their six-year marriage ended amid long-standing infidelity rumors. Cardi’s relationship with the New England Patriots’ wide receiver first drew attention in October 2024, though both initially denied they were romantically involved.

That changed when Diggs publicly supported her pregnancy on Instagram, commenting that he was “100 percent team boy.” In her Instagram post, Cardi also emphasized her renewed focus on personal growth and her upcoming tour.

“This next chapter is Me vs. Me! It’s me against all odds, me against everything meant to get in my way. I’ve started prepping for tour getting my body right getting my mind right. There’s nothing that’s gonna stop me from giving you guys the performance of a life time! I’ve learned I’ve healed, and I’m loving the woman I’ve become! Thats what this next era means to me and I’m stepping into it better than.”

During her CBS interview, Cardi spoke about the emotional balance she found with Diggs, saying, “I feel like I’m in a good space. I feel very strong. I feel very powerful that I’m doing all this work. But I’m doing all this work while I’m creating a baby, and me and my man, we’re very supportive of each other.”

The birth of her fourth child marks a new chapter for the rapper, who is preparing for her “Little Miss Drama” tour and continuing her musical comeback.

Island Boy Admits Drugs Made Him Lose it & Destroy His Home

Flyysoulja opened up about the circumstances that led to his recent three-day detention at a Miami-area mental health facility.

The Island Boys member disclosed during an Instagram Live session that his consumption of various pharmaceutical substances triggered the episode that resulted in his involuntary commitment under Florida’s Baker Act.

According to reports, the 24-year-old rapper was taken into custody over the weekend following what authorities classified as a mental health crisis. The Baker Act allows for the temporary detention of individuals who may pose a danger to themselves or others or are unable to provide for their basic needs.

“Multiple substances like pills” were responsible for the psychotic state, Flyysoulja explained to his followers. During the drug-induced episode, he spent hours frantically searching his residence for hair care products while unknowingly broadcasting the incident on social media.

“In the psychosis, I was trying to find something for my hair for hours, and destroyed the home while unknowingly being on Live,” the rapper stated.

Flyysoulja emphasized that his situation stems from substance dependency rather than underlying mental health disorders. “I never said I was suicidal,” he clarified during his livestream explanation.

The rapper also raised concerns about the circumstances of his detention, claiming law enforcement entered his property without proper authorization. He alleged that officers mistakenly identified spilled nail polish as blood evidence during their investigation.

KaylaThayla, who shares a child with Flyysoulja, provided additional context about the severity of his condition. She revealed that she only became aware of the extent of his deteriorating state when she visited the residence to retrieve her pets, discovering at that time that he had been detained.

Kodiyakredd expressed frustration with the situation and informed fans through social media that he would be responsible for collecting his brother from the medical facility following the mandatory 72-hour evaluation period.

The Hip-Hop duo gained viral fame in 2021 with their distinctive appearance and controversial online presence. However, both members have faced various legal challenges throughout their careers, including previous arrests on drug and weapons charges.

The twins have faced scrutiny for their involvement in adult entertainment platforms, including a weird incident where they kissed each other passionately.

Antonio Brown Makes Bail With Strict Conditions

Antonio Brown emerged from Miami’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Thursday afternoon, embracing freedom after posting $25,000 bail on a second-degree attempted murder charge that could land him behind bars for 15 years.

The 37-year-old former NFL superstar walked out wearing civilian clothes, immediately hugging his attorney Mark Eiglarsh before heading to a nearby food truck.

Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer had ordered his release on Wednesday, but not without conditions: Antonio Brown must now wear a GPS ankle monitor and remain under house arrest at his home in Broward County.

“He no longer has a passport. He’ll be living at his home. I look forward to working with him zealously on this case,” Eiglarsh told the judge during Wednesday’s bond hearing.

Prosecutors had fought hard to keep Brown locked up, arguing the wealthy former athlete possessed the resources to flee the country. Their concerns weren’t unfounded. Brown had been living in Dubai for several months before his extradition back to the United States.

The charges stem from a May 16 incident at a celebrity boxing match in Miami, where authorities allege Brown grabbed a handgun from a security officer and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu following an earlier fistfight.

According to the arrest warrant, one bullet grazed Nantambu’s neck. Brown’s defense team disputes the prosecution’s version of events. In addition to being shot at by Brown, Nantambu is also infamous for crashing Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime show.

The attorney maintains Brown acted in self-defense, pointing to social media posts where the former wide receiver claimed he was “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.”

Eiglarsh also pushed back against suggestions that Brown fled to Dubai to avoid prosecution.

“He didn’t flee to Dubai,” the lawyer insisted. “He always had a desire and intention to answer this case.” The attorney noted Brown has business interests in the Middle East and always planned to return for trial.

Brown appeared at Wednesday’s bond hearing via video link, wearing a red jail uniform and speaking only to answer the judge’s questions. If convicted on the attempted murder charge, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star spent 12 years in the NFL, recording 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and 88 total touchdowns. His last professional season was 2021 with Tampa Bay, where he helped the team win a Super Bowl championship.

Brown’s legal troubles mark another chapter in what has been a tumultuous post-NFL life. The All-Pro receiver’s career ended amid various controversies, but this attempted murder charge represents his most serious legal challenge to date.

As he awaits trial, Brown must comply with strict conditions, including GPS monitoring and house arrest. Any violation could land him back in jail without the possibility of bail.

The case is expected to proceed through the Miami-Dade court system in the coming months, with Brown’s legal team preparing a self-defense strategy for what promises to be a high-profile trial.

Ray J Says Kardashians Weaponizing Judicial System In Legal Counter Attack

Ray J has launched a legal counterattack against Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner, alleging the mother-daughter duo orchestrated the release of his infamous 2003 intimate recording with the reality star.

The R&B artist filed his countersuit Thursday, responding to the defamation case the Kardashian family initiated against him last month. His legal team, led by attorney Howard King, presents a dramatically different narrative about the controversial footage that helped launch the Kardashian empire.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the “One Wish” singer claims he and Kardashian “consensually shot a sex tape in 2003, and then in 2006 they discussed releasing it, and he says Kim insisted Kris be in charge of the release and commercial exploitation of the film.”

The lawsuit directly challenges two decades of public statements from the Kardashian camp. Ray J alleges Kim and Kris have “spent two decades peddling the false story that the sex tape … was leaked against her will.”

The entertainer claims the reality TV moguls are “furious” because he “no longer wants to play along with their tall tale.”

Kardashian’s legal representative Alex Spiro dismissed the countersuit, telling TMZ, “After realizing he is losing the case and losing his way, this disjointed rambling distraction is not intimidating anyone. Ray J will lose this frivolous case too.”

The legal battle intensified after Ray J made controversial statements about potential federal investigations.

During an appearance on TMZ’s Tubi documentary “United States vs. Sean Combs,” he suggested racketeering charges would be more appropriate for the Kardashians than for Sean “Diddy” Combs, stating, “If you told me the Kardashians was being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.”

Ray J’s filing reveals additional explosive allegations about a previous settlement.

The documents claim that on “The Kardashians” television show, Kim, Kris and Ye falsely accused him of sexually assaulting Kim while she was asleep, releasing revenge p###, and extortion.”

The singer alleges this led to a $6 million settlement agreement where “Kim agreed to pay him $6 million” and both parties agreed to stop publicly discussing the intimate recording. However, Ray J claims the Kardashians violated this agreement almost immediately.

According to the lawsuit, the settlement “featured a requirement barring further mention or public reference to the sex tape on ‘The Kardashians,’ but he says almost immediately after the agreement was executed, Kim, Kris, Ye, and Kendall Jenner all made statements in violation of the agreement.”

Ray J now seeks $1 million in damages under the alleged settlement terms.

The countersuit characterizes the Kardashians’ defamation case as strategic litigation rather than a genuine legal grievance.

Ray J claims their lawsuit “is not really about defamation … it’s about publicity, power, and punishment.” He alleges they “filed a baseless lawsuit to weaponize the judicial system, shirk their contractual obligations, and sacrifice on the altar of fame.”

The legal documents also address Ray J’s controversial September 2025 livestream comment where he said, “The feds is coming to investigate because I can’t be the dirty guy no more.” The singer claims he believed his microphone was off when he made this statement.

This latest development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute between Ray J and the Kardashian family, with both sides now pursuing separate legal actions over the same underlying controversy that has persisted for over two decades.
