Jessie Reyez Enlists Muni Long For ‘Ain’t U Tired?’

Jessie Reyez Ain't You Tired

Jessie Reyez has released “Ain’t U Tired?,” a new single featuring Muni Long, via FMLY/Island Records. The Grammy-nominated, six-time Juno-winning singer-songwriter also shared an official visualizer for the collaboration, which is out now.

“Ain’t U Tired?” brings Reyez and Long together on a love song built around direct, emotional vocals and piano. The accompanying visualizer places the two artists in a tropical setting with palm trees, sandy swings, and a camper van in the background. The video was released alongside the single, giving the track a visual counterpart on the day of release.

The new song follows Reyez’s April single “N.Y.F.F.,” a rap-sung track about ending a relationship with an unfaithful ex. In March, Reyez released $TILL PAID, a five-track EP marking one year since her 2025 album PAID IN MEMORIES. The EP included a remix with British rapper Stormzy and arrived after Reyez completed her sold-out PAID IN MEMORIES headline world tour in 2025.

Also in 2024, she performed at Lollapalooza in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, played Corona Capital in Mexico City, and joined U.S. arena dates on Jhené Aiko’s The Magic Hour Tour. Her song “Imported” featuring 6LACK recently reached RIAA 2x Platinum certification, while “Figures” is also certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

The song follows weeks of fan anticipation online and centers on Toosii’s path from early doubts to the next stage of his career. Its autobiographical theme matches the timing of his LSU move, which brings him back to football after years focused on recording and touring. Toosii played wide receiver in high school before his music career became his primary focus.

The release follows JADED, the project Toosii issued on October 4, 2024, featuring Gunna, Kehlani, and Muni Long. The 2024 project included “Fuk U Mean” and “Champs Élysées,” a Gunna collaboration. In 2025, Toosii released “Even Then” and joined YoungBoy Never Broke Again on “Please Don’t Go.” In 2025, Toosii also supported YoungBoy Never Broke Again on the MASA Tour, which grossed more than $75 million. Toosii’s 2023 album NAUJOUR included “Favorite Song,” which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Best James Brown Songs: 20 Funk And Soul Masterpieces

James Brown in the 1960s

If one were to name James Brown as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and beyond, there are few reasonable people who would argue. Born in 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina, and raised in Augusta, Georgia, Brown grew up singing in gospel quartets and performing throughout the South. When he joined The Famous Flames, a powerful rhythm and blues ensemble fronted by his friend Bobby Byrd, Brown’s journey to stardom would begin.

An electric performer and tireless innovator, Brown’s catalog is one of the most diverse in the history of recorded music. From his emotive ballads in the 1950s, the fiery R&B sides of the 60s, the deeply funky and socially conscious workouts of the 70s, or his pop-soul hits of the 1980s, James Brown didn’t just weather the stylistic changes that shaped popular music. Most of the time, he was a major initiator of those changes.

Listen to the best James Brown songs on Apple Music or Spotify.

When the cultural revolution of hip-hop exploded onto mainstream consciousness in the 80s, sampling arose as a new and radical musical innovation. Hungry for hypnotic grooves, pounding drum breaks, dynamic vocals, and horn riffs, hip-hop producers and DJs naturally gravitated to the Godfather of Soul. Since then, countless DJs and producers have taken bits of James Brown’s best songs to use in their own new creations, thus allowing Brown’s musical DNA to continue to spread far and wide.

With dozens of studio albums, live albums, and compilations as well as the numerous hits that Brown produced for associated acts like Lyn Collins, The J.B.s, Vicki Anderson, Bobby Byrd, and others, there is no list that could fully encompass James Brown’s prodigious musical output. That being said, these 20 best songs are a great introduction to his incredible career.

The ballads

(Try Me; Please, Please, Please; Bewildered; I Love You, Yes I Do)

Rooted in the traditions of gospel and blues, one of the greatest weapons James Brown’s arsenal is his ability to pour deep emotion into a soulful ballad. While some of his best songs like “Try Me” and “Please, Please, Please” were hits and undeniable classics, Brown brought that same ecstatic energy to ballads like “Bewildered” and “I Love You, Yes I Do.” With his strained, gravely voice, Brown was able to add a rough edge and sense of pleading urgency to these songs, a balladeer who could blur the lines between pain and pleasure, love and loss.

The origins of funk

(I Got You (I Feel Good); Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag; I Got The Feelin’; Cold Sweat; Superbad Pt. 1&2; Ain’t It Funky Now; Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine; Get Up Offa That Thang)

For James Brown, the mid-to-late 60s were an incredibly prolific and innovative period. Not only did Brown produce several of his best songs in this period with cuts like “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” “I Got The Feelin’,” he would ultimately change the course of music history by introducing a new rhythmic concept and compositional matrix into the fold. With 1967’s “Cold Sweat,” Brown placed heavy emphasis on the first beat of a song’s measure and repurposed melodic instruments into agents of rhythm. With this set of daring innovations, what we know today as funk was born. Whether it as the driving, hypnotic grooves of “Superbad Pt. 1&2” and “Ain’t It Funky Now” or flamboyant anthems like “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” and “Get Up Offa That Thang,” Brown would consistently prove that he was not only the inventor of the funk, but its chief innovator.

James Brown songs with a message

(Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud; It’s a Man’s Man’s World; The Payback)

As fate would have it, the peak of James Brown’s popularity, as well as his creative prime, would coincide with (and in many ways inspire) both the Civil Rights era and the Black Power Movement. As with many of the United States’ great musicians, Brown also sought to express the frustrations and hopes of the people by injecting socially conscious messages into his music. “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” emphasized Black pride in a white-dominated world, while “It’s a Man’s Man’s World” celebrated the contributions of women. Oftentimes, Brown would just rap to the brothers and sisters on the street with cuts like “The Payback,” lending his voice to articulate the Black, working-class experience.

Hip-hop’s DNA

(Funky Drummer; Give It Up or Turn It Loose; Blues And Pants; Mind Power; Papa Don’t Take No Mess)

When hip-hop first emerged in the early 70s, DJs utilized the funky grooves and pounding drum breaks of James Brown and the legions of bands that his best songs inspired. As sampling technology evolved, producers would once again turn to Brown, extracting snippets of horn riffs, basslines, screams, guitar licks, and drums to build entirely new collages of sound. The hypnotic, extended grooves of “Give It Up or Turn it Loose,” “Blues And Pants,” “Mind Power,” and “Papa Don’t Take No Mess” have all been sampled famously. “Funky Drummer,” however, is perhaps Brown’s greatest contribution to sampling culture. Showing up in hundreds if not thousands of songs, “Funky Drummer” has helped to shape the future of music to this day.

Chxrry and Mariah the Scientist Release New Single ‘Bottles & Lights’

Chxrry Bottles & Lights cover

Toronto singer Chxrry has linked up with R&B star Mariah the Scientist for a new song, “Bottles & Lights.” The track continues the rollout for Chxrry’s debut album, U, Me, and My Ego, which is due later this spring and which she launched last month with the lead single “Hall of Fame.”

Chxrry and Mariah the Scientist have a history of working together, after the former opened for the latter on her European tour earlier this year. On “Bottles & Lights,” the pair trade verses over a slow-burn R&B groove produced by Believve, dressing down unfaithful partners and grappling with the trials of romantic devotion. The new song also arrives alongside a visualizer which follows the duo as they go for a long, luxurious ride in a stretch limo.

Toronto-born and Los Angeles-based, Chxrry is the first woman signed to the Weeknd’s label XO Records. In addition to her stint onstage alongside Mariah the Scientist, she has toured with The Weeknd and FLO and performed with Rema and Destin Conrad. She also appeared on The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow, contributing to “Reflections Laughing” alongside Travis Scott and Florence + The Machine, and featured in the “Cry For Me” visual. Her 2025 single “Main Character” accumulated millions of streams and became a viral hit, popping up in social media transmissions from Chlöe Bailey, Angel Reese, and others.

Mariah the Scientist is coming off a significant run of her own. Her most recent album HEARTS SOLD SEPARATELY debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and No. 11 on the Billboard 200, and her single “Burning Blue” reached No. 1 on both the Rhythmic Airplay and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop charts. She also received the Honda Rising Star Award at this year’s Billboard Women in Music Awards.

Elmiene Teams Up with Baby Rose for New Version of ‘Honour’

Elmiene Baby Rose Honour

British-Sudanese vocalist and songwriter Elmiene has unveiled a new version of his single “Honour,” this time featuring rising Atlanta soul star Baby Rose. The collaboration arrives in tandem with the beginning of Elmiene’s North American headline tour, which kicked off April 30 in Detroit, and runs through May 31 in Los Angeles. Later this year, Elmiene will bring his tour back to Europe, closing things out at London’s Eventim Apollo on December 8.

Taken from Elmiene’s 12-track debut album sounds for someone, which he released in March, the reworked “Honour” marks the two artists’ first song together. It’s not, however, Elmiene’s first time reworking one of his own releases—he previously retooled his 2025 mixtape Heat The Streets into a remix EP, Heat The Streets Some Mo’. He shared his breakout EP’s, El-Mean and Marking My Time, in 2023, following them up with a steady stream of releases throughout 2024, including two live albums and another remix EP with reworks from Timbaland, Blxst, and more. He’s also collaborated with the likes of Syd, Stormzy, ASAP Ferg, and Lil Silva over the years.

No stranger to duets, Baby Rose solidified herself as an emergent force in contemporary soul by working with the likes of Georgia Ann Muldrow, BADBADNOTGOOD, and, most recently, Leon Thomas. She has also long been associated with J Cole’s Dreamville label, appearing on the 2019 compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III and opening for Ari Lennox on her Shea Butter Baby tour the same year. She shared her most recent full-length LP, Through and Through, in 2023.

Per a press release, Elmiene’s debut sounds for someone traverses “two decades of familial trials and triumphs that have profoundly shaped Elmiene’s personal worldviews, and sense of self.” It features production from Sampha and GRAMMY Award-winners No I.D. and Raphael Saadiq, the latter of whom also appears as a guest. Since its release, the record has garnered critical acclaim, earning Elmiene nominations for Best R&B/Soul Act and Best Male Act at the 2026 MOBO Awards, and Outstanding New Artist at the 2026 NAACP Image Awards. Another key single, “Reclusive,” has received over 13 million streams across platforms.

‘My People…Hold On’: Eddie Kendricks’ Spiritual Anthem

Eddie Kendricks People Hold On cover

You don’t always get to choose how a song will speak to its times. Once it hits the ears and hearts of the people, what you thought (or at least said) was a song about the universality of love becomes a powerful anthem for civil rights. That’s the story for “My People…Hold On” from Eddie Kendricks’ 1972 album People…Hold On.

Though never released as a single, the song found its way onto compilations steeped in Black pride, like 2004’s Black Power: Music of a Revolution – alongside Stokely Carmichael speeches and the proto-rap of The Last Poets – and 1995’s Movin’ On Up Vol. 2, right before War’s “The World Is a Ghetto.”

Listen to Eddie Kendricks’ “My People… Hold On” now.

Kendricks has an unmistakable sound. A clear and smooth falsetto, either floating over Melvin Franklin’s rich bass, playing tag with David Ruffin’s gritty lead or Paul Williams’ confident baritone, blending harmonies with Otis Williams or taking the lead for himself. The Temptations were essential parts in an intricate machine. But machines break down. Those perfectly-matched parts wear thin, and grooves that once worked smoothly grind against themselves.

For Kendricks, the wear became too much.

He left The Temptations in 1971 after eleven years. Soon before leaving, Kendricks told Soul, “I sometimes feel that being with a group can really be a drag. […] Even when I’m singing I’d like to be a little freer than I am.” As he released his second solo album, 1972’s People…Hold On, Kendricks had a new backing band – The Young Senators from Washington, D.C. – providing hazy psych-soul. And long-time Motown producer, Frank Wison, who’d produced his debut was again on board along with a sharp team of songwriters, Leonard Caston and Anita Poree, the writers behind the album’s (almost) title track.

If Eddie was looking for freedom, he found it in this album. Not just musically and vocally, but politically. Heroes had been murdered, cities were burning, but Black was still beautiful, and change was slowly but steadily coming.

YouTube Video
Click to load video

“My People…Hold On” is a syncopated chant, a call to action. Kendricks alternates between his signature falsetto and a deeper, earthier register throughout the track. “People were pretty surprised by it,” Kendricks told Disc in 1973. “I’ve always been able to sing like that, it’s just that I’ve never had the opportunity.” But Kendricks pushed back against the politics of the song, telling Disc, it’s “a spiritual song; it says ‘people hold on, hold on to love, that’s the only lasting thing.’ To me, that’s singing the truth. But I’m not hung up on getting political messages across. I leave that to the politicians.”

“I can see the struggle in your eyes,” he sings, the drums beating against a wailing guitar. What Kendricks may have intended as a spiritual message, spoke to people’s more earthly needs. Amiri Baraka explained it in a 1966 essay: “Black people’s songs have carried the fire and struggle of their lives since they first opened their mouths in this part of the world.” Maybe Kendricks didn’t intend it, but he was carrying fire with every note.

‘Cooleyhighharmony’ And The Hip-Hop Doo-Wop Genius Of Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men 'Cooleyhighharmony' artwork - Courtesy: UMG

Formed in 1988 at Philadelphia’s High School For Creative Arts, Boyz II Men had their big break the following year when they snuck into New Edition man Michael Bivins’ dressing room in Philadelphia. So impressed was he with their impromptu audition – an a cappella version of his group’s “Can You Stand The Rain” – he agreed to manage them on the spot. With Bivins at the helm, Boyz II Men soon scored a deal with Motown and set to work on Cooleyhighharmony, the 1991 debut album which kick-started their stratospheric career.

Written largely by the band and produced by Dallas Austin – the man who’d later oversee some of TLC’s biggest hits – Cooleyhighharmony is a choice work that melds old-school R&B with contemporary influences, and the album’s two lead singles showcased the group’s versatility. “Motownphilly,” co-written by Michael Bivins and featuring a rap cameo that detailed that fateful first backstage meeting, utilized the upbeat, hip-hop-influenced New Jack Swing genre that dominated the charts that year. Meanwhile “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday,” a spine-tingling a cappella cover of GC Cameron’s 1975 hit, perfectly showcased each member’s classically trained vocals and close harmonies. Both singles raced up the charts to become Top 5 US hits.

Listen to Cooleyhighharmony now.

Elsewhere, there were slow jams in the form of “Please Don’t Go” and “This Is My Heart”; the Boyz showcased their sensual side on the silky smooth “Uhh Ahh”; and there was another upbeat New Jack Swing-influenced anthem in the irresistible form of the James Bond-referencing “Sympin’.”  With its pitch-perfect close harmonies over tough hip-hop beats, “Under Pressure” was perhaps the purest example of the sound the boys themselves dubbed “hip-hop doo-wop.”

Click to load video

With the band presenting a preppy, clean-cut look that was a fresh change from the street-tough image that dominated R&B at the time, Cooleyhighharmony proved a huge success. After its release on April 30, 1991, it reached No.3 in the US Billboard chart and quickly went multi-platinum. Repackaged the following year to include “End Of The Road,” the song recorded for the Boomerang soundtrack and which had scored Boyz II Men their first No.1 single, the album hit even greater commercial heights as it went on to sell over nine million copies. There was more success come awards season as Cooleyhighharmony won the nod for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals at the 1992 Grammy Awards, setting the stage for their chart-topping, multi-platinum-selling follow-up, II.

Tank And The Bangas Release ‘No Invite’ Single

Tank and the Bangas The Last Balloon

Tank and the Bangas have released “No Invite,” the second single from their upcoming album The Last Balloon, which is due May 15 via Verve Forecast. The New Orleans group also unveiled a new music video for the track as they continue the rollout for the LP, their first full-length release since the spoken-word project The Heart, The Mind, The Soul. “No Invite” follows lead single “Move,” which featured Lucky Daye and introduced the next chapter in the band’s recording career.

The Last Balloon follows the group’s earlier albums Green Balloon and Red Balloon, completing a trilogy while opening what bandleader Tarriona “Tank” Ball described as a new phase. In the release, Ball said she chose the title because she did not want people asking when Purple Balloon might arrive, adding, “It’s the end of the balloons; we’re moving into a new space now.” The album was executive-produced by Austin Brown and recorded primarily at The Complex Studios in Los Angeles. Its guest list includes Iman Omari, Tane Runo, Ledisi, and Jelly Joseph.

Ball also said the band has been “working with new people and cultivating new sounds,” describing the material as part of a broader evolution in the group’s approach. She added that listeners may not always be able to categorize the band’s sound, but can still connect with how the music makes them feel. That idea runs through the album’s framework, which the release says moves between vulnerability, release, and communal uplift while keeping the dynamics of the band’s live performances in focus.

The announcement follows a notable stretch for Tank and the Bangas. In 2025, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul won the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. Before that, Red Balloon earned a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2023 Grammy Awards, while Green Balloon helped secure a Best New Artist nomination in 2020. The band first broke through after winning NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2017, and they are extending that momentum into 2026 with new tour dates in Brooklyn, Boston, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and other cities tied to the release of The Last Balloon.

“It’s definitely the one that started it all. So this is when I learned a little something about the way that records are released — or at least in the book of [record label executive] L.A. Reid,” Ne-Yo previously told Billboard. “He says, ‘So we’re going to put out ‘Stay’ first and it’s not going to blow up … but it’s going to be enough to get their attention. And then once we get their attention, ‘So Sick.’ He was right.”

Ne-Yo began his music career writing for R&B stars like Mary J. Blige and Christina Milian. His star began to rise in 2004, when he penned the hit single “Let Me Love You” for Mario, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2023, he released a mini-documentary highlighting his life and career, entitled In My Own Words. In the visual, Ne-Yo discusses his origins in the R&B genre, journaling, and melodic passion.
