Despite Alaska lawmakers’ veto override, getting an answer on oil tax settlements will take months

By: James Brooks, Alaska Beacon

On Saturday, Alaska legislators voted 43-16 to override Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s veto of Senate Bill 183, which is intended to compel the executive branch to provide information about settlements paid by oil companies to the state of Alaska, in order to resolve tax disputes with the Alaska Department of Revenue.

That vote was overshadowed by an education funding veto override that took place minutes later, but the override on SB 183 could be more significant for state revenues in the long run.

Since 2020, lawmakers have unsuccessfully attempted to audit the Department of Revenue’s audit division in order to determine whether the state has been settling tax disputes with oil companies for what Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, calls “pennies on the dollar.”

“I would expect that we will see there has been significant underpayments,” he said, explaining that the state had been collecting tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in settlement payments, “and then it dropped to $250,000. Based on the amount that the settlements dropped, which was huge, I expect there’s probably massive underpayments.”

In comparison, Saturday’s veto override on education funding involved just $50.6 million.

Legislative Auditor Kris Curtis, who has worked in that position since 2012, hasn’t been able to examine the Department of Revenue’s work because the department hasn’t provided the necessary information.

Until 2019, the department supplied that information regularly. Curtis previously conducted an audit of the same division in 2014.

“I’ve never seen this type of non-cooperation with any other administration,” she said in an interview Tuesday.

If the department still does not comply with the new law, The joint House-Senate Legislative Budget and Audit Committee is prepared to issue subpoenas to legally compel the department to release the information, said Sen. Elvi Gray-Jackson, D-Anchorage and chair of the committee.

“The engagement letter has been signed and executed, and the attorneys that we hired to move forward with the subpoenas are just waiting for instruction,” she said, speaking to reporters on Saturday.

Curtis said she hopes it doesn’t come to that.

“My plan is to reach out to the agency and basically restart my audit,” she said.

The commissioner of the Alaska Department of Revenue, Adam Crum, is scheduled to resign on Aug. 8, meaning that the audit will take place under a new commissioner.

“I’m hopeful that I can just restart my audit and everything will just proceed,” she said.

Curtis said she can’t provide much information publicly — or even to lawmakers — since the audit process is confidential.

“If they were to provide (the information) right away, it would be a few months,” she said of the timeline to complete her work. “And we also have financial and federal audits that are competing priorities.”

Asked whether the department will provide the information and for a timeline of work, the Department of Revenue forwarded questions to the Office of the Governor.

“The administration will continue to provide the information necessary for the legislative branch to complete its audits,” said Jeff Turner, the governor’s communications director, in an emailed response.

“Yeah, well, we’ll see,” Curtis said when told about the answer. “I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

Wielechowski said that under SB 183, state officials could face criminal charges if they refuse to comply. That possibility is a long way off, he said.

“The Legislature is not itching for a fight with the executive branch,” he said. “We just want the information.”

Juneau assembly considers ranked choice voting for local elections

NOTN- The City and Borough of Juneau is weighing the potential adoption of ranked choice voting for its local elections, if approved it could be the first municipality in Alaska to do so.

The Juneau Assembly’s Committee of the Whole discussed the proposal during a meeting Monday night. While no changes will occur this election cycle, a public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 18 to gather feedback and continue discussions.

“It won’t be on the ballot for this year, but they’re going to have another public hearing about that on August 18, and then discuss it post election for next year” Said Deputy City Manager Robert Barr.

The proposed system would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather than selecting only one.

If adopted, the change would apply to regular and general municipal elections in the capital city.

City officials said that the proposal remains in its early stages and implementation is not imminent.

Ranked choice voting is currently used in Alaska for state-level elections, following a 2020 ballot measure approved by voters. In the most recent election, Juneau voters rejected a statewide initiative that aimed to repeal the system.

Alaska’s governor came to Juneau for last weekend’s special session with a noticeable abrasion on his forehead, the result of skin cancer surgery, he told reporters at a news conference after lawmakers voted to override two of his vetoes.

“I didn’t get beaten up by anybody, or the Legislature — they didn’t beat me up, either,” he told reporters.

Dunleavy had similar procedures in 2019 and 2023 to deal with basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer that is known to recur.

Talking to reporters, he joked that as a kid, he didn’t wear sunscreen enough and said that people should use it.

Jeff Turner, the governor’s communications director, said Tuesday he’s not aware if the governor plans any ongoing or future cancer treatments.

Hulk Hogan Sex-Tape Leaker Was NOT Bubba The Love Sponge, Brooke Hogan Reveals

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The infamous Hulk Hogan sex tape and its leaking ended up being a grim portent of many events to come.

It was also dramatic on a personal level, as the late wrestling personality accused longtime friend Bubba the Love Sponge of letting it go public. There was a lawsuit and everything.

A little over a week after Hogan’s death, daughter Brooke Hogan is absolving “Uncle Bubba” of any wrongdoing.

According to her, Hulk told her directly that he knew that Bubba was not the leaker.

Bubba the Love Sponge did NOT leak the Hulk Hogan sex tape, Brooke says

On Tuesday, August 5, Brooke Hogan called into Bubba the Love Sponge’s radio show.

During the chat, she expressed that she had “been watching you take the heat for” the infamous sex tape leaking.

“And,” Brooke continued, “I’ve been hearing you say ‘sorry, sorry, sorry.’”

“My dad told me the real story,” Brooke then told Bubba.

“He said one of your employees had [the tape] and that they took it from you,” she revealed.

Brooke then affirmed: “He knew it wasn’t you.”

Clearly, Bubba never expected a public absolution

At this, Bubba the Love Sponge expressed his shock at Brooke Hogan absolving him of leaking the Hulk Hogan sex tape.

No one else in the infamous wrestler’s orbit has come forward to say this.

“I can’t watch you beat yourself up,” Brooke expressed.

“Because, for me, you were always my uncle Bubba.”

To be clear, Bubba was a “suspect” in the leak because Hulk had slept with Heather Clem, who happened to be married to Bubba at the time.

Hulk Hogan did sue Bubba and Heather over it.

They settled for $5,000, with Bubba giving Hulk a public apology on the air.

“I just don’t want you to keep beating yourself up over that,” Brooke emphasized. “Because he told me he knew it wasn’t you.”

Remember, that one leak led to a whole sequence of bad events

The Hulk Hogan sex tape leaking was a big deal for him, personally. It was also foreshadowing for our current nightmare world. Yes, really.

Hulk’s ensuing lawsuit against Gawker Media was a victory for Hogan — and for his backer, notorious billionaire Peter Thiel.

“Morally dubious” billionaires throwing their weight around to destroy media that they personally dislike has come to define much of today’s horrors.

That lawsuit was the canary in the coal mine.

Jay Blades, Seen Here with King Charles, Arrested on Rape Charges

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Jay Blades, the British television host best known for fronting the BBC show The Repair Shop, has been charged with two counts of rape.

A former factory worker who rose to small screen fame over the past several years, Blades will appear to face these charges on August 13.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said the following on Tuesday in regard to the case:

“Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape. He is due to appear at Telford magistrates’ court on 13 August 2025.”

The sexual assault allegations follow a separate charge against Blades last year relating to controlling and coercive behavior… which he has denied.

Blades, who has not appeared on the BBC since last year, is awaiting trial on these separate allegations and, as mentioned previously, will appear at Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday for a pre-trial review.

The Repair Shop premiered in 2017 and featured members of the public bringing their treasured possessions and heirlooms to be fixed by Blades and company.

In 2023, the program won a BAFTA award for a royal special edition in which King Charles (then Prince Charles) was a guest and brought a clock and a vase to be fixed.

As you might expect, Blades’ connection to the King has caused this arrest to make headlines across the globe.

Veteran actress Judi Dench also appeared on the show — with Blades and Dench striking up such a rapport that they went on make the Channel 4 show Dame Judi and Jay: The Odd Couple.

Blades has also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef and The Great Celebrity Bake Off.

The charges against Blades arrive at a time when there is major scrutiny on the conduct of male presenters on British television.

Most recently, Gregg Wallace and John Torrode were removed as the hosts of MasterChef after an independent investigation substantiated allegations of misconduct against the two men.

Wallace later apologized for using “inappropriate language,” but denied more serious allegations.

Scheana Shay Hints That She Banged Ryan Gosling, Reveals Best Celebrity Hookup

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Scheana Shay has a new memoir to promote, and the woman definitely knows how to drum up publicity.

One of the most buzzed-about parts of the book is the passage in which Scheana lists all her celebrity hookups.

And it turns out she’s been with quite a few dudes (she names a dozen of them in her memoir).

US TV personality Scheana Shay arrives for the 2024 People's Choice awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, February 18, 2024.

Scheana Shay opens up about past hookups

Scheana is still making the media rounds, and not surprisingly, folks want to know more about her history of hooking up with well-known stars.

During an appearance on today’s episode of the wildly popular (and bizarrely named) “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast Scheana offered more details about her life as a young single in Los Angeles.

“Who was, like, the best hookup?” host Amanda Hirsch inquired of the former Vanderpump Rules star.

Without missing a beat, Scheana replied, “Shemar [Moore].”

Her enthusiasm on the subject might lead us to feel some sympathy for Scheana’s husband, Brock Davies — were it not for the recent revelation that Brock cheated on Scheana while she was pregnant.

Scheana previously listed John Mayer, Jesse Metcalfe, Jesse McCartney, Eddie Cibrian, and JC Chasez on her list of celebrity conquests.

Most of them have yet to comment on her claims, but Metcalfe said he was flattered that her memories of their time together were so positive (though probably not as flattered as Shemar!).

But when it comes to fame, with the possible exception of John Mayer, none of the previous celebs who have hooked up with Scheana could hold a candle to the man who might be her best-known ex.

Scheana may or may not have hooked up with Ryan Gosling

Shay previously mentioned that she’d hooked up with “two actors from The Notebook.”

Naturally, Hirsch wanted to know if one of those two actors was Ryan Gosling.

Shay gave a coy response, noting that she’s “not confirming or denying” the rumor that she hooked up with Hollywood’s hottest star.

“Maybe there’s another book one day,” she added.

James Marsden and Kevin Connolly also appeared in the film, so even if Scheana didn’t hook up with Gosling, she might still have some good Notebook tea to spill.

Of course, there’s only one actor who comes to mind when the blockbuster 2004 romance gets mentioned.

And if Scheana really had a torrid affair with the star of the film, then she might have enough material for one hell of a sequel to her debut memoir!

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Spotted House-Hunting In His Hometown: Report

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Another football season is right around the corner.

And while Travis Kelce might be laser-focused on bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City, he’s got a different Midwest city on his mind this week.

According to a new report, Travis and Taylor Swift were recently spotted house-hunting in his hometown of Cleveland.

Travis Kelce, left, and Taylor Swift react as the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers play during the first period in Game Four of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final at Amerant Bank Arena on June 12, 2025 in Sunrise, Florida.

Is Taylor soon to become a resident of the Buckeye State?

Local media outlet Cleveland Scene reports that Tay and Trav “visited at least two opulent homes currently for sale in Northeast Ohio’s tony eastside suburbs on that visit.”

This is big news for a number of reasons:

For starters, this means that Taylor and Travis are likely to move in together once the upcoming NFL season ends.

On top of that, we now know that there are “opulent homes” in Northeast Ohio. Who knew?! (Just kidding, Cleveland!)

US musician Taylor Swift and US NFL football player Travis Kelce attend the men's final match between Italy's Jannik Sinner and USA's Taylor Fritz on day fourteen of the US Open tennis tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, on September 8, 2024.

(Photo by TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Getty Images)

Anyway, Taylor and Travis have been dating for a couple of years now, and they’ve spent much of that time cohabiting.

But between her record-breaking world tour and the rigors of the NFL season, they’ve also spent quite a lot of time in different parts of the world.

Now, it looks like the world’s most beloved couple will be making their home in Cleveland once Travis’ football career comes to an end.

(Kelce has not yet announced that he’ll be retiring from the NFL after this season, but it’s a safe bet. He turns 36 in October, which is approximately 94 in tight end years.)

And naturally, that news has fans wondering what else the future holds for this lanky duo.

Taylor Swift celebrates with Travis Kelce #87 of the Kansas City Chiefs after defeating the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on January 26, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri.

What’s next for Taylor and Travis?

For over a year now, we’ve been hearing rumors that Taylor and Travis are secretly engaged.

And while that’s entirely possible, the only new rings she’s been rocking in public lately have been Travis’ Super Bowl rings.

If Tay and Trav wind up closing on a house together, you can bet that the rumor mill will start churning like never before.

But any nuptials will likely have to wait until Travis’ campaign for a final Super Bowl victory comes to an end.

We’re sure Taylor will be cheering him on every step of the way.

Gloria Estefan Defends Husband After Diddy Lawsuit: We Never Had a Secret Tunnel to …

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Gloria Estefan and her husband have come up in a lawsuit against the disgraced rapper.

Despite Diddy’s outrageous partial acquittal, he will likely still end up spending time in prison.

And the lawsuits keep coming in. An acquittal does not protect you from civil court — remember O.J. Simpson?

One lawsuit alleges that a property that the legendary singer owned was used to transport him to one of Diddy’s infamous parties.

One Diddy lawsuit also mentions true music royalty

In April, a man named Manzaro Joseph filed a lawsuit alleging that he was sexually assaulted in 2015 at a party for Diddy’s son, Christian.

The alleged incident took place on Star Island.

The Miami Beach island is a location where, as the almost clumsily obvious name might imply, many of the rich and famous own property.

According to Joseph’s filing, he was transported in a tunnel into Diddy’s home after entering another estate through a back entrance.

That other estate’s owner, he claims, was Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan.

Joseph alleges that Gloria and Emilio saw him as he moved through their mansion, with Gloria allegedly shocked at his state and wanting to call an ambulance.

Emilio, he alleges, moved Gloria away from the scene.

Joseph claims that, at the party, he was drugged.

He also accuses Diddy of placing a sex toy on his head and walking him around the party at one point. At this point, most are familiar with Diddy’s reputation.

What does Gloria Estefan have to say about that?

Us Weekly reports that Gloria Estafan has written a declaration to the court, citing that she does own multiple homes — and previously owned a home next to Diddy’s property.

She “categorically [denies] each and every allegation about me and my husband.”

Gloria added that she and her husband did not reside in the property that was adjacent to Diddy’s.

However, family members did. “Had strangers appeared” at the residence “after midnight in early April 2015 that would have no doubt been reported to me or to Emilio,” she wrote.

“No such thing happened. Particularly given the occupants of [the home], I know that no parties were thrown during that time period,” Gloria wrote. One of the occupants was a small child at the time.

She also wrote that Joseph could not have entered the home through the back, as visitors would need to pass the front gates — plural — no matter what.

“At no time was there ever any ‘tunnel’ between the two houses, at least not while we owned [the home sold to Diddy],” Gloria added.

“I believe this fact could have been easily verified through the public records of the City of Miami Beach.”

Is this a case of mistaken identity? Who’s misremembering?

“I was never in [Diddy’s] house and [Diddy] was never in either our residence or family house, except after [Diddy] purchased the family house in 2021,” Gloria Estefan emphasized.

She strongly lamented that her husband had become involved in this lawsuit, given that she believes that there are factual errors.

Obviously, we cannot claim to know the facts of the case. Clearly, at least one person is remembering events very differently than at least one other person.

And no, we don’t think that we can count upon Diddy himself to clear things up.

Blue state GOPers shudder

With help from Amira McKee

MUTUALLY ASSURED REDISTRICTING: The multi-front, tit-for-tat gerrymandering war is putting New York Republicans in a perilous position, and they’re acting quickly to condemn Hochul — and even buck President Donald Trump — to avoid becoming casualties as Dems seek retaliatory redistricting.

After President Donald Trump pressed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to redraw his state’s congressional maps in a way that would add five GOP seats, Hochul responded with a pledge to “fight fire with fire.”

New York’s Republican Reps. Mike Lawler, Elise Stefanik, Nicole Malliotakis and Nick LaLota don’t want to become collateral damage. To that end, some are even willing to blast Trump’s efforts in Texas.

“What Texas is doing is wrong and I’m opposed to it,” Lawler texted Playbook, noting that he’s sponsoring a bill with fellow blue state Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley of California that would ban gerrymandering nationwide.

Malliotakis is speaking out against Texas’ redistricting efforts too.

“I may differ in opinion from many of my colleagues on this, particularly the ones from Texas,” she told The Joe Piscopo Show on Monday. “I’m not somebody who’s supportive of any type of gerrymandering.”

Their efforts come as Hochul continues to burn away any pretense that New York’s redistricting process should be independent.

“Up until now, Democrats have treated our political system like it’s still governed by norms, guarded by limits and rooted in fairness,” Hochul wrote in an op-ed published today in the Houston Chronicle. “Rules were meant to be followed. It hurts to say it, but that era has come to an end.”

On Monday, as Hochul hosted Texas lawmakers fleeing their state to prevent passage of redistricting legislation, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie told New York’s Republicans to pipe up.

“Perhaps the Republican members of Congress here in New York could say to their Republican colleagues in Texas, ‘Hey, slow down on this, because this can also affect us,’” he said.

But the Republicans speaking out about what’s going on deep in the heart of Texas still won’t forget Dems’ redistricting past at home.

New York Democrats tried to redraw district lines in their favor long before Trump told Texas to make changes of its own. In 2021, voters rejected a Democrat-led ballot referendum to weaken the independence of the state’s redistricting process. The next year, the courts blocked their attempts to redraw the maps in a way that would favor Democrats.

“New York Dems have been trying to gerrymander and rig the elections for years, well before what Texas is doing,” Lawler said. “They are not doing this in response, they are using this as cover to justify what they have wanted to do.”

Lawler said he’s still working on the specifics of his federal anti-gerrymandering bill.

Stefanik — who’s considering a gubernatorial run against Hochul — said she would work to prevent mid-decade redistricting in New York if elected governor. But she went silent when Playbook asked her if she’s against mid-decade redistricting in Texas.

“As Governor, Congresswoman Stefanik would support the NY State Constitution that is explicit with once a decade redistricting and the will of the voters of NY that voted for the independent bipartisan commission,” her spokesperson Alex DeGrasse said in a statement. “Congresswoman Stefanik successfully led the effort to protect the integrity of NY elections and fair district lines while Kathy Hochul tried twice to illegally gerrymander and suppress the will of New York voters.”

Hochul spokesperson Jen Goodman responded to New York’s GOP members.

“If New York House Republicans are serious about protecting democracy, they should direct their outrage at Donald Trump and their colleagues in Texas trying to dismantle it,” she said. “Until Texas stands down, Governor Hochul will continue exploring every available option to fight fire with fire and ensure New York voters are not silenced.”— Jason Beeferman

New York Republicans are planning to file a federal lawsuit challenging the state's new law moving most local elections to even-numbered years.

A FEDERAL SUIT AGAINST EVEN-YEAR ELECTIONS: Republicans are planning to file a federal lawsuit challenging New York’s new law moving most local elections to even-numbered years.

The suit is in the works as the state Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments in September in a series of state-level cases brought over the 2023 law, which rescheduled town and county races. A mid-level appellate court concluded in May that the law doesn’t run afoul of the state constitution, despite challenges from eight GOP county executives.

Arguments in the forthcoming federal lawsuit were previewed in an amicus brief filed today in the state’s top court on behalf of the town of Riverhead and Nassau County Legislator Mazi Pilip. They’re saying the state law runs afoul of the U.S. Constitution.

“The primary purpose of the First Amendment is not to increase raw participation numbers, but rather to protect the public dialogue and debate that sits at the very heart of our democracy. When local elections are consolidated with federal and statewide contests, local candidates are pushed to the margins of the ‘public square,’” according to the brief, a copy of which was obtained by Playbook.

“The First Amendment doesn’t stop at the steps of the state capital,” said William A. Brewer III, the counsel representing Riverhead and Pilip. “Our clients contend that in their communities, democracy will be drowned out — not by censorship, but by unnecessary burdens to local speech.”

State Sen. James Skoufis, who sponsored the now-on-the-books bill to reschedule elections, said the suit is evidence local officials like Pilip are “afraid of more voters participating in their elections.”

“This is desperate and pathetic,” Skoufis said. “It is obviously constitutional — there are other states that have done it, there are other jurisdictions that have done it. It unequivocally and dramatically increases voter turnout. So it’s laughable on its face that anyone thinks this isn’t going to be completely thrown out of a courtroom.” — Bill Mahoney

Mayor Eric Adams held a rally on Monday with faith leaders from around the city who support his reelection bid.

BOOK OF JOB APPROVAL: Mayor Eric Adams held a rally on the steps of City Hall today with a pan-city collection of faith leaders backing his run. The incumbent, who is limping along in the polls and facing high disapproval ratings from voters, used the opportunity to highlight his accomplishments and re-air his longstanding grievances with the press.

Adams, who repeatedly criticized Andrew Cuomo for avoiding the media during the Democratic primary, began the event with a warning: He would not be taking questions.

“After I speak, I’m bouncing,” Adams said. “You’re not going to tarnish the good news of today.”

He closed his remarks by asking God for a “special prayer.”

“Lay hands on our media,” he said. “Heal them. Put honesty in their hearts.”

Adams has taken umbrage at coverage of his since-dismissed federal bribery case, allegations of a quid pro quo with President Donald Trump and corruption probes that hollowed out his inner circle.

As he left, reporters peppered him with queries anyway, prompting the mayor to clap and chant “ask me the good news questions” as he and his retinue disappeared into City Hall. — Joe Anuta

Rep. Elise Stefanik introduced a bill Monday to condemn the deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan and call on lawmakers to

RESOLUTION TO BACK THE BLUE: Stefanik introduced a resolution today to condemn the mass shooting last week in midtown Manhattan, where five were killed including an off-duty NYPD officer.

The measure also condemns “divisive rhetoric and violence against federal, state, and local law enforcement officers and urges lawmakers to redouble their commitment to backing the blue.”

The North Country Republican said in a statement that “anti-police policies should have no place in our great state.”

Meanwhile, on Long Island, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Rep. Andrew Garbarino, both Republicans, sought to emphasize the importance of training and collaboration among local, state and federal law enforcement officials. They toured the Nassau County Police Department’s intelligence center and police training village.

Garbarino, the new chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, said his focus will be counterterrorism, including in neighboring New York City.

“New York is the greatest city, it’s also the one that’s most top targeted and we have to protect it,” the House member said.

Stefanik and Blakeman, potential candidates for governor next year who are close allies of President Donald Trump, have slammed Democrats for policies and rhetoric they say is dangerous for law enforcement officials. But they did not reference their political affiliation in their remarks today. — Emily Ngo

Trump on Texas redistricting: ‘We are entitled to 5 more seats’

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Republicans were “entitled to five more seats” in Texas, in one of his first public comments on the state’s new proposed congressional map.

Trump had remained quiet on the state’s redrawn map since it was introduced, despite brewing commotion over the Republican partisan gerrymander that prompted dozens of state Democratic lawmakers to flee the state in a last-ditch attempt to block the map’s passage over the weekend.

The map could net Republicans as many as five seats in the state. It has triggered an arms race across the country, with Democratic-controlled states — most notably California — pledging to gerrymander their own maps in response.

“We have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats. We have a really good governor, and we have good people in Texas. And I won Texas,” Trump told CNBC’s Squawk Box. “I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, as you probably know, and we are entitled to five more seats.”

Texas Republicans last week unveiled a new congressional map of the state that, if passed by the state’s legislature, would boost the party’s chances of maintaining control of the House in the 2026 midterms. It came after pressure from the Trump aides to redraw the map, along with the Department of Justice alleging that the previous map could be illegal, even as Trump makes it clear the redraw is predominantly driven by politics.

Scores of Democratic state lawmakers left the state in an attempt to stop Republicans from implementing the map by denying the legislature a quorum. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has repeatedly vowed to expel the absent Democrats from the legislature if they fail to return to the state for its ongoing special session.

Trump on Tuesday bashed the departed Democrats, some of whom fled to Illinois on Sunday, calling the situation “terrible.”
