Ashley Cooke Unveils Two Emotional New Tracks, ‘famous to frances’ and ‘johnny ‘n june’

Ashley Cooke is offering not one, but two new previews of her upcoming self-titled sophomore album, with the release of “famous to frances” and “johnny ‘n june.”

Arriving August 14 via Big Loud Records/Back Blocks Music, ashley cooke will showcase the singer-songwriter’s ability to turn deeply personal experiences into relatable stories. Both of today’s releases serve as perfect examples of Cooke’s ability to dive into complicated emotions that come with heartbreak, as they each offer a different perspective on love, loss and moving forward.

“famous to frances”

Written by Cooke alongside Johnny Clawson and Kyle Sturrock while on a bus weekend “somewhere in NY,” “famous to frances” is a raw and far too relatable story depicting the turmoil of a complicated relationship. Cooke paints the picture of a guy who isn’t necessarily a major part of her everyday life, in fact most people around her don’t even know he exists, but he still takes up a huge amount of emotional space in her mind.

The title references her real-life therapist, Frances, who knows all the details about this person because she’s the one hearing about him during their regular sessions. The two of them spend so much time helping Cooke unpack the relationship, her feelings for him and why she still struggles to let go that he ends up becoming “famous” to Frances. Through mid-tempo airy melody, the songstress creates an honest look at the conflict between knowing what’s best for you and still holding onto feelings.

“johnny ‘n June”

The second track to arrive today, “johnny ‘n June,” was penned by Cooke with Lauren Hungate, Emily Weisband and Will Weatherly. These songwriters depict the lingering heartbreak of a relationship that was never fully defined, but somehow still felt like it would last forever.

The tune offers a nod to one of music’s most iconic love stories, but Cooke’s emotional storytelling actually points to a memory of falling for someone named Johnny in the month of June. She offers vivid imagery while reflecting on the time they shared and explores the difficulty of letting go of a connection that has left her wondering if she’ll ever find that same kind of spark again.

“I kissed a friend in February/ Said he saw us gettin’ married/ So I ran away the way I always do/ I met a mama’s boy in August/ Yeah but if I’m bein’ honest/ My mind the whole time just went back to Johnny ‘n June,” Cooke sings on the chorus.

Both produced by renowned producer Dann Huff, “famous to frances” and “johnny ’n june” offer another glimpse into the depth of Ashley Cooke’s upcoming sophomore album. The project features a collection of standout tracks, including her current Country radio hit “baby blues,” recent hit “the hell you are,” “xs” and “high school sweetheart.”

Cooke is also preparing to embark on her upcoming global headline run, the baby blues world tour, which launches on September 17 at Globe Iron in Cleveland and is set to continue through February 25, where she will wrap up the run at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. In between, the 28-date trek include stops in major cities throughout the US and UK.

Dems pick South Carolina to lead 2028 primary calendar

Democrats voted to make South Carolina their first presidential primary state for 2028 — a significant shift from past election cycles, and one that prioritizes a state with a significant Black voting bloc.

The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee on Friday scheduled the Palmetto State’s primary for Jan. 22 and tentatively set the rest of its early-voting calendar in a surprisingly tense voting session. It will be followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia.

The decision to choose South Carolina over Nevada, another historic early state in contention for first place, came down in part to concerns about Nevada’s ability to process election results quickly. Democrats said they were also looking to strengthen Black voting power in the South after the Supreme Court significantly restricted the Voting Rights Act earlier this year, which triggered redistricting efforts.

Michigan bested Iowa in the vote to be the Midwest’s early state — a notable departure, as Iowa led the calendar for decades through 2020. New Hampshire, which has gone second on the nominating calendar in most past cycles, got bumped back to third place.

Then, things got tense.

The committee voted to add Virginia and New Mexico to host early-state primaries for the first time. But Democrats also proposed having New Mexico vote on Feb. 15, before Michigan, because Democrats there can’t move their primary unilaterally.

That’s a major departure from a monthslong, widely agreed upon plan from the DNC members to give one of the first four early states to the South, Northeast, West and Midwest. The adopted calendar leaves the Midwest, a crucial region for Democrats’ path to victory in 2028, represented fifth, and sparked frustration from a number of Midwestern members of the DNC.

“We had four regions for a reason, and we should be respecting that,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) said during the meeting. “For too long, Democrats flew over the Midwest.”

The proposed calendar will be voted on by the full DNC at its August meeting in Austin.

The slate of early nominating states — and their specific order — will significantly shape the path to victory for the field of Democrats eyeing the 2028 presidential nomination. It elevates the South and Southwest, which boasts large populations of Black and Latino voters, and weakens the voices of Democrats from the Northeast and Midwest.

And it happened partly by accident.

Jane Kleeb, chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, said the mid-September deadline to move a state’s primary date caught her and other members by surprise – and ultimately ended up costing Michigan an even more prominent placement.

“The rule was passed last year. A lot of us, because we deal with a lot of things, just forgot about it,” Kleeb said. “We all thought we had until Jan. 15, which would have given more time to do it.”

Dennis Speight, a DNC member from Texas who supported New Mexico getting moved into the early round of states, argued it would have gotten lost if it had been stuck between two larger states.

“We wanted to do mostly smaller states first, and did not want New Mexico, which we spent a lot of time adding to the mix to get to that sixth state, to get lost in that shock,” Speight said after the vote. “If we had sandwiched New Mexico in between Michigan and Virginia, given their number of delegates, New Mexico might have gotten lost.”

DNC chair Ken Martin, who previously led the Minnesota Democratic Party, said he believes Michigan will still play a big role in selecting the next nominee.

“As a proud Midwesterner, I want to make sure that Michigan does not get overlooked,” Martin said after the meeting. “When you think of all the other states and the number of delegates that will come out of Michigan and Virginia compared to the other states, there’s no way they’re going to be overlooked in that process.”

And Dingell said after the vote that Michigan’s role as the first large state on the calendar would prevent it from being overshadowed, adding that presidential candidates “are going to be there, they’re going to have to talk about the issues.”

Friday’s vote was the culmination of months of intense lobbying by some of the top politicians and operatives across the nation’s battlegrounds, a furious effort that played out in public letters and over private drinks and included handwritten notes from New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and literal sweeteners in swag bags of local goods.

South Carolina and Nevada, which in recent years had been third and fourth in the process, emerged as frontrunners as Democrats who’ve long bemoaned the lack of diversity in Iowa and New Hampshire looked for ways to make increased overtures to Black and Latino voters. That desire only grew in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Callais ruling — and prompted Virginia to elevate a second southern state into the early window.

Some Democrats additionally pointed to South Carolina’s role in propelling former President Joe Biden to the nomination in 2020. Biden won the state resoundingly, boosting his then-floundering campaign after underwhelming performances in Iowa and New Hampshire, before racking up huge victories across the Black-heavy South on Super Tuesday that launched him to victory.

“They saved our entire country from Donald Trump,” said Kleeb. “They didn’t just do it in 2020. They’ve done it over and over and over again.”

“Our party must acknowledge this now with actions,” she continued.

A number of potential 2028ers have already visited South Carolina well in advance of the DNC’s meetings. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), and former ambassador Rahm Emanuel have all traveled to the state this year. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) visited the state last summer.

Nevada, a union-heavy battleground state with a diverse electorate and large Latino population, argued it was better positioned for the leadoff spot than reliably red South Carolina — a push backed by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Xavier Becerra, who is running to be the first Latino governor of neighboring California. But some RBC members worried Nevada’s grace period for counting late-arriving mail ballots could delay results and inject chaos into the nominating process from the jump if it was the first state.

New Hampshire and Iowa Democrats decried the proposed calendar, which overturns their premium positions from past cycles.

“The Democratic National Committee’s decision today is wrong for Democrats, wrong for New Hampshire, and wrong for the country,” said New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, and Reps. Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander in a statement.

“This is just another example that National Democrats are truly out of touch with voters. Iowa is the center of the political universe right now,” Iowa Democratic Party chair Rita Hart said.

The DNC unsuccessfully attempted to add Georgia to its early window in 2024. Peach State Democrats were candid that their ability to fill a top slot would hinge on whether they were able to flip the governor’s and secretary of state’s offices in November — a gamble RBC members seemed unwilling to make. North Carolina also faced logistical hurdles.

Fourth virus outbreak reported on National Geographic Sea Bird, ship cancels July 25-30 trip

Four gastrointestinal illness outbreaks aboard a small cruise ship in Southeast Alaska in less than two months have resulted in its owner cancelling a trip scheduled to depart Juneau on Saturday.

The National Geographic Sea Bird has reported four outbreaks since May 26 to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the only vessel reporting more than one outbreak to the agency during 2026. The most recent was during a voyage July 15-20 between Juneau and Ketchikan, following other outbreaks on trips July 10-15, June 25-30 and May 26-21.

Eight of 57 passengers and five of 26 crew were reported ill during the July 15-20 voyage, according to a CDC report published Thursday. The cause is listed as unknown, similar to the July 10-15 outbreak resulting in 18 illnesses, while the other two with a total of 32 illnesses are listed as norovirus.

The Sea Bird was scheduled to depart Ketchikan on Monday, July 20, for a voyage arriving in Juneau on Saturday, according to the tracking site CruiseMapper. However, the site shows the ship still docked in Ketchikan as of Thursday afternoon. The ship was also supposed to dock in Haines on July 27.

Lindblad Expeditions, in a notice to a passenger booked on a July 25-30 trip that was obtained by the Juneau Independent, states “we have made the difficult decision to cancel the voyage.”

“Following reports of gastrointestinal illness on recent sailings, and after consulting experts and partners, we determined that cancelling this voyage is the most responsible course of action,” the notice states. “This was not a decision we made lightly. We know how much anticipation goes into a journey like this, and we recognize how disappointing this news will be.”

Lindblad Expeditions has not responded to requests from the Juneau Independent for comment about the outbreaks. There was no mention of the outbreak or the cancellation as of early Thursday afternoon at the company’s website.

This company announced last December this is the final season the National Geographic Sea Bird, originally built in 1982 and refurbished in 2014, will be in service.

Is Ella Langley MAGA? Debate About Country Star’s Politics Leaves Fans Divided

Reading Time: 2 minutes

These days, it seems like you can’t step outside without hearing the catchy refrain of Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas.”

The 27-year-old Alabama native is shattering records with her crossover hit, and several major outlets have dubbed her country’s next megastar.

But sudden fame has its drawbacks, as Ella might be learning the hard way these days.

Ella Langley attends the 61st Academy of Country Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 17, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Some of those articles declaring Langley the Queen of Country have been bombarded by comments claiming that the singer is also a diehard Trump supporter.

“She’s MAGA though,” one Facebook user commented on a recent Atlantic profile

“That girl is MAGA,” another chimed in.

Yes, these are divisive times in America, and support for a historically unpopular president (Trump’s approval rating currently sits at just 36 percent) could be enough to derail Ella’s career.

At the same time, her music is the sort of mainstream country that Nashville was churning out in the ’80s and ’90s, so coming out against Trump would surely alienate millions of fans.

So what’s the real story here? Is Ella really a MAGA diehard? Is she more moderate? Is she even political at all?

Well, we don’t really know, as she has yet to comment on the situation.

In all likelihood, we have a Sydney Sweeney 2.0 situation on our hands.

As you may recall, millions jumped to the conclusion that Sydney was MAGA after learning that she’s a registered Republican.

That’s not necessarily true, of course, as there are many Republican critics of Trump.

But MAGA folk were eager to claim the industry’s biggest star as one of their own, so they picked up the narrative and ran with it.

For her part, Sydney avoided the controversy as best she could, just like Ella is doing now,

Why? Because she’s a 20-something woman who’s poised to become one of the biggest stars of her generation, and if she plays her cards right, she might be able to parlay that fame into a 10-figure net worth.

For obvious reasons, Sydney probably cares more about her career than she does about America’s never-ending culture war.

Both Sydney and Ella are products of rural upbringings, so they probably hold some conservative views. And they both work in the entertainment industry, so they probably hold some progressive views.

And they’ll probably continue to infuriate people from all across the political spectrum by continuing to keep mum about those views.

Nancy Guthrie Ransom Note Revealed: ‘She Will Be Killed’

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It has been just about six months since Nancy Guthrie’s violent kidnapping from her home.

As new pieces of information come out, Savannah Guthrie recently stepped away from The Today Show.

One new detail reveals, in almost its entirety, the first ransom note — unlike the forgery, this one may be from the actual kidnapper.

It paints a chilling picture, promising to kill Nancy if the payment does not arrive on time.

‘We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days’

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since January 31, 2026.

One week ahead of the six-month anniversary of her tragic kidnapping, the world is learning more details about the first ransom note that Savannah received.

On the Crime Junkie podcast, Briana Whitney joined Ashley Flowers to discuss the details of the kidnapper’s chilling demands.

“Hello, Savannah. We have your mother, Nancy,” Whitney read aloud. “She is safe but scared.”

The note warned: “She will be held for ransom, and once payment is received, she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days.”

According to Whitney, the note proceeded to demand millions of dollars.

People previously heard from a source that the note demanded $4 million in bitcoin by Thursday, February 5.

If that demand were not met, the note detailed that the kidnapper would want $6 million by February 9.

“Once payment is received to the Bitcoin address below, she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson,” the kidnapper alleged.

The ransom note warned: “If the payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5 p.m., she will be killed.”

‘Her life is in your hands’

“Your mother is aware of this,” the ransom note informed Savannah, “and her life is in your hands.”

The note insisted: “It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible.”

Whitney continued to read the chilling message, which warned: “You will not be able to contact me from here on out. There will be no negotiation.”

Sternly, it continued: “Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you.”

At the end of the note, it included little details about the interior and exterior of the home — things that would, presumably, wash away any doubts that Savannah might have had about whether this was the kidnapper or a sick copycat looking for a payday.

After reading the note, Whitney noted that the FBI is — six months later, just about — still unsure if the note is authentic.

Presumably, agents have been too busy helping Kash Patel plan luxury vacations and jet out to visit his girlfriend or party with hockey teams to make this determination.

However, unless the kidnapper’s claims within the note were false, presumably Savannah understood the message to be genuine.

That said … it is widely believed that Nancy, an octogenarian without her medication who had just been violently kidnapped, did not survive to even the first ransom deadline.

Our hearts continue to go out to Savannah and to the entire family. This heartbreaking situation continues, offering them no real closure.
