New coaches. New strategies. New blueprints. The 2026 recruiting cycle gave us our first real glance at how college football’s newest coaching regimes plan to build their programs. Who impressed us the most with their first class? Who left us uneasy? Which program surprised us most? And who mastered the art of juggling high school recruiting with the transfer portal? Following a season with new hires at elite-level programs like Penn State, Florida and Michigan, there is plenty of room for debate, and this season should be filled with several insights gleaned. Here are our takeaways in this week’s debate: Which first-year head coach impressed you the most or concerned you the most with their initial recruiting class? Michael Cohen: Lane Kiffin, LSU Despite all the resources and historical appeal of a place like LSU, which some consider the single-best job in college football, what Kiffin did by first salvaging, then assembling, an elite recruiting class after an avalanche of negative headlines was impressive. There’s never been a reason to doubt Kiffin’s eye for talent or charisma as a recruiter. The work he did in assembling one highly rated class after another at Ole Miss — his last four transfer portal hauls all ranked in the top five nationally; his last four high school classes all ranked among the top 30, even after he leaned more heavily into the former — speaks to his success in player acquisition. But logically, or perhaps morally, it seemed like Kiffin’s decision to bail on a College Football Playoff team might finally be the thing that stained his reputation. And yet here stands Kiffin, happily presiding over an LSU recruiting class that features four of the top 60 players in the country and ranks 11th nationally. Laken Litman: James Franklin, Virginia Tech Franklin impressed with his debut class at Virginia Tech. Penn State caught us all off guard by firing Franklin in October after his team started the season 3-3. The Nittany Lions were in the College Football Playoff semifinals in 2024 and a hot pick to win the national championship this past season. Things didn’t go as planned, obviously, and Frankllin was let go after 12 successful seasons. Virginia Tech quickly scooped Franklin up and he got to work. He took quite a few former Penn State commits with him, flipping 10 Nittany Lions recruits to join him in Blacksburg. Franklin cites the relationships he built with those players previously, and clearly it’s been working. In fact, Virginia Tech’s 2026 recruiting class, ranked No. 28 in the country by 247Sports, is the highest-ranked class the Hokies have had since 2019. RJ Young: Jon Sumrall, Florida Not only did Sumrall put together a top 20 recruiting class this year, but he did so while still serving as head coach at Tulane through the Green Wave’s College Football Playoff run. That recruiting haul doesn’t even account for one of Florida’s most important offseason wins: retaining running back Jadan Baugh, who returned after rushing for more than 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns. Between talent acquisition and key roster retention, the Gators are off to a fast start under a head coach who clearly understands both the value and difficulty of winning in the SEC. Which program’s recruiting class surprised you the most this cycle? RJ Young: Oregon Oregon’s No. 2-ranked recruiting class surprised me only because Ducks coach Dan Lanning continues to build through high school when he could just as easily fill his team with older veterans, something many programs are apt to do at this precarious time in the sport. There’s so much quality talent in his 2026 class with four five stars — tied with Alabama for the most in any class this cycle. This marks three years in a row that the Ducks have put together a top-five recruiting class. Michael Cohen: Washington For Washington to land the No. 13 class in the country reflects exemplary work by head coach Jedd Fisch at a time when his name was heavily linked with other vacancies across the sport during the coaching carousel. The Huskies’ current class includes an incredible 10 players rated among the top 250 nationally, headlined by five-star offensive tackle Kodi Greene (No. 27 overall, No. 4 OT), whom Fisch and his staff flipped from rival Oregon. Washington hasn’t put together a high school class that finished among the top 15 in the country since 2019, according to 247Sports, the final season under former head coach Chris Petersen. In fact, the Huskies’ average national ranking across its six previous classes prior to the stellar 2026 haul — a stretch that spanned coaches Jimmy Lake, Kalen DeBoer and Fisch — was just 47.6 overall. Laken Litman: USC USC is the first non-SEC program since Clemson back in 2020 to finish a recruiting cycle with the No. 1-ranked class in the country. It’s also interesting that Lincoln Riley was able to lock down such a coveted class considering USC has yet to make a CFP appearance. But Riley landed three five-stars in offensive tackle Keenyi Pepe out of Florida, edge Luke Wafle from New Jersey and Jaimeon Winfield from Texas, plus a handful of top in-state commits. USC hasn’t had the No. 1-ranked recruiting class since Pete Carroll’s 2006 class. And since Carroll left, no coach has been able to achieve what he did. Perhaps things are finally going in the right direction for the Trojans. Time will tell. Which program did the best job balancing high school recruiting and the transfer portal? Laken Litman: Texas It’s not unreasonable to say that Texas underachieved this past season. The Longhorns started the season as the No. 1 team in the country, but never looked the part and didn’t make the CFP. This wasn’t what Steve Sarkisian envisioned – especially with Arch Manning at QB – and so he made a lot of changes this offseason. First, Sarkisian secured a top 10 recruiting class, which includes his quarterback for the future in five-star prospect Dia Bell (son of former NBA player Raja Bell). Couple that with what the Longhorns gained from the portal, like beefing up both sides of the line of scrimmage, especially the offensive line, which was their weakest position group of the 2025 season. Texas also improved its skill players, which included a commitment from former Auburn receiver Cam Coleman. So it seems like things just might be looking up for the Longhorns in 2026. RJ Young: Ohio State Ohio State is the only program in the 2026 cycle to put together a top five high school recruiting and transfer portal class, which is perhaps the biggest flex for off-the-field success that we’ve seen this season. The Buckeyes had aspirations of becoming the first back-to-back national champions in school history last year, but their hopes were dashed by the national title runner-up (Miami). Ohio State is investing in winning now and in the future by adding veterans and talented freshmen to a program that expects to win at a high level. Michael Cohen: Notre Dame When it comes to Notre Dame, there have been so many stories and so much air time dedicated to the nature in which the Fighting Irish’s season ended. From narrowly missing the College Football Playoff as Miami leapfrogged head coach Marcus Freeman’s team in the final rankings, to the school’s surprising decision to opt out of bowl games all together, to the future of Freeman himself — a coach still very much in the minds of NFL owners and general managers because of how well he’s performed the last four years. But in spite of all that, Notre Dame continues to reach new heights in its player acquisition efforts under Freeman. The Fighting Irish assembled a high school class that ranks fifth nationally and includes as many five-star prospects (four) as any team in the country, tied with Oregon and Alabama. In the transfer portal, Freeman added a relatively small seven-player class, which ranks ninth in the country, but with that has an average prospect score of 92.29, highest in the country by nearly three full points over Miami. As Hollywood continues to mourn the passing of James Van Der Beek, a star who had been especially close to the actor has chosen to honor him in an especially lovely way.
In a moving, hand-written tribute posted to Instagram late Wednesday, Katie Holmes said that her Dawson’s Creek colleague’s passing was “a lot to process,” and that she’d written her words with a “heavy heart.”
(Van Der Beek died on February 11 after a battle with colon cancer.)
“James, thank you,” Holmes began yesterday morning. “To share a space with your imagination is sacred — breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each other’s hearts are safe in their expression… these are some of the memories, along with laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs — adventures of a unique youth.”
Holmes and Van Der Beek famously co-starred together on Dawson’s Creek, the smash hit WB drama that aired from 1998-2003, as beloved pair Joey and Dawson, respectively.
It was the first major role for both young stars.
In her tribute, Holmes called out her friend’s bravery, compassion, selflessness and strength.
“An appreciation for life and the action taken to live life with the integrity that life is art — creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children — the journey of a hero,” she wrote.
In the wake of Van Der Beek’s passing, a GoFundMe set up to assist his spouse and their six children has raised over $1.3 million to date.
Along with her message, Holmes wrote as a caption:
“I formed some words with a heavy heart. This is a lot to process. I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved. Kimberly, we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children.”
Elsewhere, Busy Philipps — who joined Dawson’s Creek on Season 5 — poured her out on social media, citing Van Der Beek as “one in a billion” and adding:
“My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today…every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister.”
Along with Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek will forever be remembered for his iconic role in the film Varsity Blues. May the actor rest in peace.

Sarah Ferguson is in a tough spot.
Like so many other powerful people, Ferguson’s name appears in the Epstein files multiple times.
And we now know that she enjoyed quite a close relationship with the deceased sex trafficker.
Emails between Ferguson and Epstein reveal that she lied when she claimed that she had cut off contact with him after his 2008 conviction of soliciting a minor for prostitution.
One exchange indicates that Sarah took her two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, to have lunch with Epstein just five days after his release from prison.
Not surprisingly, Ferguson has been dropped by the charities she was working with, and her contract to write a children’s book has been canceled.
Now, it seems, the 66-year-old former duchess (when her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, was stripped of his titles, Sarah lost hers as well) is reportedly worried about how she’s going to make ends meet.
“I need to get back to work. I need money,” Ferguson recently remarked to a friend, according to The Daily Mail.
Now, Sarah’s not talking about getting a job in an office.
No, she’s planning to make a comeback and continue earning money on the strength of her fame.
And it seems she’s aware that in order for that to happen, she would first need to sever all ties with her disgraced ex.
Yes, Sarah once described herself and Andrew as “the happiest divorced couple in the world.”
But more recently, she reportedly told a friend, “When I come back I am going to have to put some distance between myself and Andrew.”
Now, if you’re thinking “too little, too late,” you’re not alone.
In fact, it seems that Sarah is currently persona non grata in her old social circles.
“Sarah is upset that their names have apparently been taken off the guest lists for red-carpet and charity events,” says the source.
But all hope is not lost. You see, Sarah knew Jeffrey Epstein like few others. In one of her emails, she revealed that Epstein had a secret child, a fact that’s seemingly not mentioned anywhere else in the files.
So if Sarah wants to cash in, she could always just write a scathing tell-all memoir.

Riley Green has already confirmed that he’s going to be making his acting debut in a TV show sometime soon, but he has yet to share any specific details. Luckily, some eagle-eyed fans may have just figured out the secret he’s been keeping.
Earlier this week, the trailer for Season 1 of the new Yellowstone spinoff series, MARSHALS, dropped, giving the first look at the action-packed drama set to unfold in the story that finds Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. The first season will consist of 13 episodes that follow Kayce as he embarks on a new chapter after what appears to be the loss of his wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille), leaving him with just his son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
Based off the scenes strung together in the trailer, he uses his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to join the U.S. Marshals. With all the criminal activity that has moved into Montana, Kayce and his teammates, including Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), will work together to defend their land.
The tension ramps up when Kayce reconnects with a former SEAL teammate, and together with his Marshal unit, they hunt a bomber threatening Broken Rock Reservation, leading to a high-stakes showdown with an armed anti-government militia.
Amid all the chaos and violence, fans think they spot Riley Green making an appearance during a rare quiet moment around a campfire. The actor, believed to be the country star, wears a cap that hides most of his face, making it hard to confirm. But with a guitar in hand and his recent acknowledgment of his venture into the acting world, it seems likely that it really is him.
Back in December, the Alabama native told Country Now that he had to remain fairly tight lipped about what he had in the works.
“I need to actually sit down and talk to somebody about what I’m allowed to say… I’ll just guess I’m allowed to say that I have done some acting, and it’s a show, and it’s going to be airing sometime fairly soon.”
He also shared that finding time for this exciting new experience was challenging with all his travel and touring, but once on set, it all came pretty naturally to him.
“As far as actually on set acting and kind of being there and getting into that head space, I felt like it came sort of natural to me.”
More recently, Green shared an update that included a pretty undeniable hint about his role in MARSHALS. Speaking with Country Now and other outlets yesterday at the BMI-hosted No. 1 party, he opened up about his growing interest in stepping out of his comfort zone and exploring opportunities that could build his career beyond the stage.
“That may be an avenue for me to dial back my life on the road if I’m doing something else that’s also kind of building my career,” he admitted. “And I certainly think acting can do that. You look at what the shows like Yellowstone have done for the Western lifestyle and how big country music I think is becoming big in other countries because of shows like that. So it’s definitely something I’m interested in and we may or may not see something like that.”
Fans will finally learn the truth as the new Taylor Sheridan-created series unfolds, premiering Sunday, March 1 (8:00–9:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+.

Hoarding is complex. It’s emotional, it can be a trauma response, and it is often a product of poverty.
Which of these is behind the state of Tori Spelling’s sprawling Calabasas home?
Tori both is and is not rich. She is also a mother of five children.
But her friend is staging a mini-intervention, warning that she needs help. Tori agrees.
Her home these days is a pit of chaos
You may recall that, a few years ago, Tori and her five kids were hopping from home to home.
They spent time living in a motel. They even spent time in an RV park.
These days, however, they’ve upgraded.
Tori and her chldren are living in a 3,100 square foot Calabasas rental home. They’ve been there since March 2024.
(Yes, it is expensive — to the tune of $12,000 per month in rent alone)
On the Friday, February 6 episode of Tori’s misSpellings podcast, friend and co-host Amy Sugarman staged a mini-intervention.
Tori explained that her home is currently a mess because of her (recent) bout of illness.
Amy pushed back on that idea — telling Tori that maybe the “disorganized” state of her home contributed to her getting sick.
Tori showed Amy a photo of the living room. She explained that she has turned it into her “gifting suite.”
Amy expressed her alarm, saying: “Tori, this is not good.” It is February, and Tori’s Christmas tree was still up.
The house is nice, but is in urgent need of tidying
Amy was quick to emphasize that the home has a lot of potential beneath the clutter.
“You can see the bones in here,” she pointed out. “Like the shelves could be really pretty, the living room could be really pretty.”
Amy praised Tori: “You have beautiful things.”
But then she acknowledged: “Like, it’s borderline hoarder, I’m not gonna lie.”
Tori then confessed that she has “stopped having people over” because of the state of her home.
According to Tori, this state of chaos is a new development for her.
“When Dean and I were together and lived together, I was able to have a house that was presentable because he wouldn’t live like that,” she explained.
“We were working at different times,” Tori continued, “so I had downtime when he’d work.”
She admitted: “My busy, chaotic work and children lifestyle is not gonna change.” (Not with that attitude, it won’t)
Tori then revealed: “In fact, in the next year, there’s gonna be things coming up, it’s gonna be escalated.”
Managing her life as a solo parent at this age is an adjustment
“So I need to be on my A game,” Tori emphasized. “And once someone comes in and does all this, yes, I can maintain it if I have someone helping me.”
Amy gently told her: “I do think you need help. This is like, chaos.” It sounds like Tori is overwhelmed by her life in several ways.
Additionally, it sounds like she developed the habit of cleaning for someone else — in this case, for ex-husband Dean McDermott.
If you’re cleaning for someone else, be it your mother, your spouse, your kids, then you’ll only remain tidy as long as they are in the picture.
As with so many things in life, keeping an ordered home requires intrinsic motivation. You need to want to keep your home in order on your own terms.
(But also, Tori has five children and is a working mom in a single-parent household — not only is this not a moral failing, but it’s an understandable one)
