Cody Johnson Reflects On His Longtime Friendship With Luke Combs: ‘Real Respects Real’

Cody Johnson and Luke Combs have been supporting each other for years, and the Texas native even credits his fellow country act with helping open major doors in his career. Johnson is now looking back on their friendship, noting how their history dates back to the early days, when Combs was still playing tennis courts and quickly gaining momentum in country music.

In the new episode of Bobby Bones Presents: The BobbyCast, now streaming on Netflix, Johnson sat down with the Award-winning radio host and media personality and discussed his friendship with Luke Combs, life before music, his next album and more.

Luke Combs was brought into the conversation when Bones asked Johnson how he felt about opening for the North Carolina native when he was already used to being a headliner himself. The answer was simple. While serving as a special guest on Combs’ 2023 World Tour overseas, Johnson says the experience only deepened his admiration for Combs’ work ethic.

“I have nothing but respect for Luke, and I’ve been opening for Luke Combs since he was playing tennis courts,” Johnson revealed. “He played a tennis court and it was like 6,000 people. It wasn’t a huge show, and of course he was blowing up at the time, but I think real respects real. And whenever I saw Luke for the first time, I went, that’s real. The way he handles his camp, the way he handles his finances, the way he records his records, the content that he’s putting out, I had a lot of respect.”

When Luke Combs called, Johnson answered without any hesitation because he wanted to be there for his friend the way Combs had been there for him at the start of his career.

“He’s opened a lot of doors for me. Like I said, we went from opening for him from tennis courts and pavilions to stadiums, and I’m not a coattail rider, but whenever a good friend of that many years says, ‘Hey, do you want to go be direct support for me overseas?’ You say, ‘hell yes I do.’”

Plus, this time overseas gave Cody Johnson the chance to put his music and talent in front of a whole new audience. It proved to be worth it because two years later, he returned to headline his own tour and sold out nearly every show.

The “Work Boots” singer took his job as an opener very seriously, just as he has always done. Instead of getting on stage and simply trying to stay out of the way of the headliner, he believes that the best strategy is to try to level up the playing field.

“He knows I’m coming out to try to mop the floor, and all it did was elevate their game. And he’s like, ‘dude, I love having you open, because it just pushes us to a different level of knowing, Hey, if we’re going to follow that, we better gear it up.’ I’m like, ‘that’s a very high compliment from him,’” Johnson admitted.

In addition to their time on the road together, the country acts have recently been spending time in the studio. A few months ago, Johnson revealed that his next album will feature at least two collaborations: one with Brothers Osborne and another with Luke Combs.

“Probably going into the studio to do vocals in January to get a record out next year…Just need some guest performances by Luke Combs and Brothers Osborne. Then we’re done,” he teased.

His album hasn’t been formally announced yet, however he shared with Bobby Bones that it is “almost finished” so he is confident that it will arrive sometime in 2026.

“Don’t really have a date on it. I hate setting a date. I hate setting a date and working backwards. So we also have all this new material that we’re going to start trying to dig into so that whenever tracks hit and a new single hits after ‘The Fall’ hopefully goes number one, we can have all this new material sitting in the tank.”

Luke Combs, however, has announced details for his next full-length project, including the 22-song track list which features a song penned by Cody Johnson. His name appears on Track No. 14, “I Ain’t No Cowboy,” alongside co-writers Combs and Jake Mears.

So while here are no current plans for the artists to share the stage anytime soon, they have been collaborating in other ways.

Johnson has officially returned to the road for Cody Johnson Live 2026 Tour, following three months off to recover from a surgery after bursting his eardrum. The country star admitted he was grateful for the time off to spend with his new baby boy, but he was eager to get back to doing what he loves most.

“It’s time for me to go hit the stage and please some crowds and enjoy making music with my bros, man,” he told Bones. “Just making music with the dudes just like we did when we were 13 and 14 in the garage pi**ing our parents off.”

This conversation with Cody Johnson on “Bobby Bones Presents: The BobbyCast” is now streaming on Netflix. The episode, as well as past interview with acts like Kenny Chesney, Bailey Zimmerman and Blake Shelton are also available as an audio release on iHeartRadio and everywhere podcasts are heard.

James Van Der Beek’s Ex-Wife Pays Tribute as Late Actor’s Final Project Is …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

As we previously reported, James Van Der Beek passed away this week at the age of 48.

The Dawson’s Creek star died at home following a courageous battle with colorectal cancer.

Across social media, millions have offered condolences to James’ wife and six children.

And perhaps one of the most meaningful tributes has come from Van Der Beek’s first wife, Heather McComb.

The couple were married from 2003 to 2010, and while they went their separate ways shortly before he married his second wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, it’s clear that Heather had nothing but love and respect for her ex.

“I am heartbroken over the loss of beloved James,” Heather wrote on Instagram Thursday, alongside a photo of herself and Van Der Beek.

“I am especially heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly, his beautiful children and his amazing family, Jim, Jared, Juliana and all of his family and friends who I know he loved deeply,” she continued, adding:

“This picture is from my 21st birthday. Dawson’s Creek hadn’t even aired yet. This is how I will always see James innocent, kind and pure of heart.”

From there, Heather paid tribute to James’ second marriage:

James was a beautiful soul filled with so much light, love, talent, humor, depth, sensitivity, knowledge and a deep love of God that shined through him. He shined so bright yet was so humble and human. Always searching, always growing, always going deeper, always chasing things outside his comfort zone. I know that James loved being a father so much and oh how he loved Kimberly with his everything. True soulmates.”

Heather concluded with a plea to her followers to help James’ family financially by contributing to their GoFundMe page.

“I love you James. I know you had a lot of loved ones up there welcoming you home. God bless you. Till we meet again you sweet soul you,” she wrote.

“Prayers up.James family meant everything to him please help cover them during this difficult season. Link to go fund me in my stories.”

Heather’s tribute comes as we’re learning new information about Van Der Beek’s final days.

It seems he knew that the end was approaching, as he received visits from numerous longtime friends.

He also spent his time working on his final professional project, his memoirs.

We don’t know how far he got or when that project might see the light of day, but we’re sure millions of fans would appreciate one last display of James’ famous wit and wisdom.

Our thoughts go out to his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Luke Combs Shares Full 22-Song Track List for ‘The Way I Am’ Album

With just over a month to go until Luke Combs releases his highly anticipated album The Way I Am, the country star took to social media to unveil the full 22-song track list. He admitted to being “super pumped” to share the titles of every track that will appear on the record.

Combs has slowly been teasing snippets of the new music online, thus building more and more anticipation as the official release date nears. Fans have already gotten a taste of what’s to come through six previously released tracks including “Back In The Saddle,” “My Kinda Saturday Night,” “Days Like These,” “15 Minutes,” “Giving Her Away,” and “Sleepless In a Hotel Room.”

It’s now known that The Way I Am will only include one collaboration, “Ever Mine,” featuring Alison Krauss, which the North Carolina native has already previewed across his socials.

Co-written with Hailey Whitters and Charlie Worsham, the moving tune unfolds in the form of a letter, penned by a soldier for his wife. In the message, the soldier portrays his uncertainty and longing while away at war. Combs originally introduced “Ever Mine” in 2020 and revisited it November of 2025 for Veteran’s Day.

Other exciting things to note from the track list are that Cody Johnson appears in a writing credit for “I Ain’t No Cowboy,” and Combs served as a co-writer on all but three songs, including the title track.

When sharing the latest news, Combs also revealed that track No. 19, titled “Be By You,” will drop tomorrow, February 13. On this track in particular, Combs captures the simple joy of being close to someone you love, cherishing quiet moments together and enjoying the little things, like waking up next to each other.

From the tracks released so far, as well as previews of the remaining songs, it’s evident that the album reflects Combs’ life as a devoted husband and father, as well as a gifted storyteller.

Along with building out his new album and preparing to welcome his third child with wife Nicole, Luke Combs will launch his 2026 My Kinda Saturday Night Stadium Tour this spring. The trek will bring the “Sleepless In A Hotel Room” singer to sold-out stadiums across the U.S., U.K., and Europe.
