‘Baduizm’: The Album That Crowned Erykah High Priestess Of Neo Soul

Erykah-Badu-Baduizm

Can it really be that long ago? In many ways, it feels like we’ve benefitted from Erykah Badu’s idiosyncratic style and lyrical insights since time immemorial; yet it also feels like only yesterday that Baduizm, originally released on February 11, 1997, made its creator a household name, taking her to No.2 in the US while cruising to the top of the R&B chart.

A confident mix of jazz, soul, R&B, and hip-hop, Baduizm was uniquely Erykah: the first offerings from a woman who’d been singing on local radio stations since the age of 14, and who, aged 25, contained a lifetime’s worth of experience in her vocal delivery, drawing comparisons to Billie Holiday while also being praised by the Chicago Tribune for having “an artistic vision as unique and independent” as Prince’s during his mercurial 80s heyday. Receiving the Best R&B Album award at the Grammys (as well as scooping Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Badu’s R&B chart-topping debut single, “On & On”), the album also swept up accolades at the American Music Awards and Soul Train Music Awards.

Three years later, Badu followed her debut with an even more expansive album. Furthering her artistic exploration even while looking inward to develop deeply personal lyrics that resonated with her ever-growing fanbase, Badu loaded Mama’s Gun with neo-soul classics such as “Bag Lady” and “Didn’t Cha Know?” – cuts that more than earned their place among the era’s finest, and which still sound fresh as ever. Recently hailed by Pitchfork as “a Black feminist album that went well beyond documenting tales of heartbreak to address issues greater than the sum of any one relationship,” Mama’s Gun remains a landmark release. But Baduizm is where it all started – and Erykah herself remains the High Priestess Of Neo-Soul.

Montana LB Solomon Tuliaupupu Granted 9th Year of Eligibility By NCAA

Montana linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu will return for the 2026 season after being granted a ninth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The school announced Tuliaupupu’s return on social media on Monday alongside sixth-year offensive lineman Dylan Jemtegaard. Tuliaupupu will be entering his second season at Montana after starting his collegiate career at USC in 2018. He was sidelined for his entire undergraduate campaign at USC after two surgery-requiring injuries impacting his foot (2018) and knee (2020). The linebacker’s first season at Montana — and eighth overall — was just his second full season played and third with game action. He saw the field for the first time as a redshirt senior in 2022, appearing in all 14 games for the Trojans and recording 10 tackles, including three for a loss, and one quarterback hurry. Tuliaupupu returned to the sidelines with another injury in 2023 and missed the wholes season. He wrapped up his USC career in 2024, playing in seven games for the Trojans before his season was cut short due to illness. He transferred to Montana in 2025. Tuliaupupu will play under new Montana coach Bobby Kennedy. Kennedy is succeeding Bobby Hauck, who was named defensive coordinator at Illinois on Monday after a brief retirement. Jill Zarin FIRED From Real Housewives Spinoff Due to Bad Bunny Rant

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jill Zarin is back on the job market.

The Real Housewives of New York City star was fired on Tuesday afternoon after she ranted and raved on social media about Bad Bunny as the main attraction of the Super Bowl LX halftime show.

“It was the worst halftime show ever,” Zarin said in a since-deleted video later reposted via X by a fan.

“I just don’t think it was appropriate to have it in Spanish, and, quite frankly … grabbing his G [groin] area … I think it was totally inappropriate.

“You’ve got all these young kids watching the Super Bowl, and he doesn’t have to be grabbing himself every five seconds because he’s so insecure. Seriously.”

That’s quite a take on Bad Bunny. He’s inappropriate apparently and insecure and, of course, Zarin believes anti-American.

Such an opinion has cost Zarin her job.

Late Tuesday, producers behind the E! reunion series “The Golden Life” — which was announced on February 3 — released a statement that condemned Zarin’s overt racism.

“In light of recent public comments made by Jill Zarin, Blink49 Studios has decided not to move forward with her involvement in The Golden Life,” this message read.

“We remain committed to delivering the series in line with our company standards and values.”

“I don’t speak Spanish. I would’ve liked to have known the words he was saying,” Zarin went on this weekend, adding in hilarious fashion:

“To me, it looked like a political statement because there were literally no white people in the entire thing. I’m not taking a side, one way or the other … I think it was an ICE thing. I think that the NFL sold out, and it’s very sad.”

We’re pretty sure that’s the definition of taking a side.

And the reality star wasn’t done, either.

Lady Gaga then caught a stray when Zarin added of the artist, who made a salsa-themed cameo during the halftime show:

“And Lady Gaga got a facelift — I didn’t recognize her! I literally had to Google her face to see who it was. We all couldn’t agree who it was. So that was kind of fun in the middle of halftime. At least it gave me something to do, because it was so hard to watch.”

Plenty of misguided and myopic morons have blasted Bad Bunny’s performance.

Since Sunday night, however, the Bravosphere has risen up as one against Zarin’s remarks, with Real Housewives of Orange County cast member Tamra Judge Tweeting in response to Jill’s words: “What the actual F*#k.”

Then there was Real Housewives of Dubai cast member, Chanel Ayan, who wrote: “I had to unfollow disgusting,” with a vomit emoji.

Finally, Margaret Josephs of The Real Housewives of New Jersey wrote: “I’m horrified, disgusted and disappointed, but that’s my feeling everyday. BUT elated by the NFL and Bad Bunny’s beautiful representation of America.””
