43-year-old serial killer Cleophus Cooksey Jr. has been sentenced to death.
The spree killer murdered nine people over a three-week period in Phoenix back in 2017, killing all of them with a gun.
Though much of his motive (beyond robbery and sexual assault) remains unknown, a jury convicted him for murder, armed robbery, and more.
He has received six death sentences as a result.
In 2017, Cleophus Cooksey Jr. was released from prison after serving a manslaughter sentence.
Vitally, he was part of a robbery and did not kill anyone during that crime. However, under the infamous felony murder rule, all participants in a felony crime are liable for deaths during its commission.
Famously, however, prison does not make people better. Within months of his release, he killed his first known victims.
On November 27, 2017, Cooksey killed Parker Smith and Andrew Remillard, shooting both in a car. The motive remains unknown.
Days later, on December 2, he struck again, killing Salim Richards and stealing a Glock 9mm handgun.
On December 11, Cooksey killed Jesus Real, the brother of Cooksey’s ex-girlfriend. He is the only known victim for whom prosecutors did not press charges.
(It was a messy case, with Cooksey’s ex-girlfriend and Real’s baby mama both being arrested for evidence tampering. Prosecuting this killing might have distracted from the rest of the case)
Two days later, on December 13, he shot and killed LaTorrie Beckford. The motive remains unknown.
On the 16th, he murdered Kristopher Cameron and Maria Villanueva. He allegedly raped the latter. (The jury convicted him for the attempt to commit rape)
Then, on December 17, Cooksey shot and killed his mother, Rene Cooksey, and his stepfather, Edward Nunn.
The killing of his mother and stepfather is how Cooksey was caught.
In movies, dedicated and driven detectives turn their own lives upside down to catch a serial killer. Every now and then, that happens in real life.
But not usually. Most serial killers are of below-average intelligence and escalate their violence, feeling invincible as their killings grow more risky and more frequent.
In Cooksey’s case, neighbors heard gunshots and contacted authorities. When police arrived, Cooksey … answered the door. It’s not every day that checking on a noise complaint ends up catching a serial killer.
Investigators found evidence linking to other killings, including personal items from the victims.
After numerous delays, Cooksey’s trial began in May 2025. He was represented by a public defender.
In September, the jury convicted him of all eight of the murders for which he was being prosecuted.
On December 18, he received a death sentence for six of the eight murders.
The jury was unsure of the punishment for his mother and stepfather’s killings.
He also received a 9-year prison sentence for the other charges, including armed robbery.
The attorney general has contemplated seeking a sentencing retrial for the two murder convictions that did not result in the death sentence.
(Sometimes, redundant sentencing is about covering your bases in case of a surprise on appeal, but it can also just be political)
At this point, it looks very likely that six death sentences will be sufficient to kill Cooksey.
It will take time and, of course, years of appeals. There’s no reversing an execution, so you really want to get it right.
Cooksey has maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and trial.

As previously confirmed, Kristy Scott is single.
And as the social media influencer appears to have just confirmed herself via Instagram?
Kristy Scott is also ready to mingle!
On Wednesday, Scott shared the following photo on her wildly popular account, simply writing “same address” as the caption to her 1.4 million followers.
The 30-year old posted this thirst trap a couple weeks after filing for divorce from husband Desmond.
The estranged spouses got married in 2014 and share sons Vance and Westin.
In an Instagram Stories post on Saturday, January 10, Desmond opened up about his split from Kristy. And seemingly admitted at the time to cheating.
“I want to begin by apologizing to Kristy, our family, and everyone who has been impacted by the public attention surrounding this situation,” he began.
“I know this news has been disappointing for many, and I’m truly sorry for the hurt it has caused.”
Continued the father of two:
Kristy is the mother of my children, and that will always come first. I remain fully committed to being an active, present, and loving parent to our boys, as have always been.
Desmond also emphasized that he and Kristy “faced challenges and made sincere efforts to work through them,” but after he told her he “wanted to separate” at the end of 2025, Desmond “made choices that I am not proud of.”
This would be the infidelity, we assume.
“I took responsibility for those actions, I shared this with her directly and personally, and ultimately we decided to divorce,” Desmond concluded.
“l ask for privacy and compassion as we navigate this difficult chapter of our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years. I’m grateful for that support.”
Both sides of this now-former couple have HUGE social media followings.
Kristy has garnered 16.9 million followers on TikTok and 9.5 million on Instagram… while Desmond’s TikTok account is followed by 1.5 million people and his Instagram account has a following of 1.8 million.
Scott’s legal documents were filed in Harris County, Texas and indicated that there is no hope of reconciliation for the former couple and that they “will soon stop living together as husband and wife.”

Earlier this week, we reported on a viral Instagram post about Taylor Swift’s drinking habits.
A content creator named E.B. Johnson made a video in which she addressed allegations made by Swifties that the pop icon’s previous boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, was an alcoholic.
Johnson pointed out that Taylor and her current partner, Travis Kelce, both appear to be fairly heavy drinkers (at least on occasion), so it might be a bit hypocritical for fans to slam Joe’s boozing.
Now, she’s followed that post up with a video alleging that Taylor’s binge-drinking habit is not a new one.
Johnson begins the video by introducing an article from 2015 with the headline:
“The Weeknd Says Drunk Taylor Swift Wouldn’t Stop Stroking His Hair”
“Well whaddya know? Looks like ‘Tini Taylor strikes again,” she captioned the post below.
In the clip, Johnson continues to make her case that Taylor might be a heavier drinker than her fans would like to believe.
“We’re gonna focus on the drunk part, but that’s hugely problematic in a number of ways,” Johnson says, referring to Taylor’s treatment of The Weeknd.
“I think if we put the heavy drinking in the context of Taylor Swift, her behaviors, the people she’s surrounding herself with, it all starts to make a lot of sense,” she continues.
From there, Johnson notes how the version of herself that Taylor presents to the world — “the happiest, luckiest girl, so in love, getting married to her soulmate” — doesn’t quite jibe with being a heavy drinker.
After all, Blissfully happy people generally don’t feel the need to numb themselves with booze on a regular basis.
“If you’re so happy, why are you binge drinking?” Johnson asks.
Addiction is, of course, a very complex issue, and none of us knows for sure how much Taylor drinks, or her reasons for imbibing.
In the comments, however, Johnson’s followers generally concurred that her observations make a lot of sense.
“I like her music and I follow her and I can tell you: she has a drinking problem and it’s been the elephant in the room for years in the fandom. But she is functional, so nobody really cares,” one person wrote.
“Also the fact that she’s said there have been multiple occasions that Travis has been too wasted to be able to show up for her, and yet she’s still gonna marry that man. She doesn’t see that as a red flag; she sees that as a soulmate,” another added.
Several pointed out that Taylor herself sang, “I was a functioning alcoholic” on the song “Fortnight” from her Tortured Poets Department album.
It’s worth noting that Taylor used the past tense, seemingly indicating that she no longer has a problem with booze.
Hopefully, if she ever needed help, she found it.
But clearly, quite a few people are of the opinion that Taylor is still hitting the bottle too hard.
