On Tuesday, Lady A’s Charles Kelley bravely took to social media alongside his wife, Cassie, to reveal his multiple myeloma diagnosis. The Georgia native shared that doctors discovered the rare form of blood cancer after conducting tests related to a few rib fractures he had sustained.

In his video message, the 45-year-old remained positive, telling fans he was feeling “really hopeful” as he prepares to begin treatment.

In the hours after his video was posted, Kelley’s social media was flooded with comments from fans and friends, including a slew of fellow country stars who offered words of support, prayers and encouragement.

Among those to rally around Kelley were his longtime friends and Lady A bandmates, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood.

Scott shared, “The strongest duo right there! Love y’all so much! You’ve got this,” while Haywood wrote, “Covering you in prayer brother. Love y’all. We’re all here for you!”

Other members of the country music community also rallied around Kelley.

Fans also filled Kelley’s comments with prayers, words of encouragement and stories of their own experiences with cancer and recovery.

Later in the day, Kelley returned to Instagram, where he admitted to feeling “overwhelmed by the support.”

“Just so many people thinking about me, and it is. It’s weird. It still feels like it’s kind of a dream. I haven’t started the treatments or anything yet, but other than healing up from this little rib fracture and just a little bit of body soreness, I feel like myself,” he said.

He went on to explain that he feels there may be a greater purpose behind what he is going through while expressing his gratitude to everyone who has reached out to him.

“It’s warmed my heart. I had my moments of sadness that first week we kind of found out and my wife was, and honestly some friends too, especially some guys that I get together with and we talk about our sobriety journey. I’ve flipped the narrative in my mind and I think mind, body, soul, faith, I mean, there’s a reason for it all. And it might be to connect me even closer to my higher power or really soak up these moments with my family more…Sometimes these things that feel like a curse can be blessings in disguise. And so thank y’all for all the love. I’m trying to get back to everybody. But man, I’m overwhelmed with emotion, love and support.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Multiple myeloma happens when healthy plasma cells become abnormal cells that multiply and produce abnormal proteins. This can cause medical issues that can affect your bones, kidneys and blood cells.”

Kelley also revealed that a friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma just weeks before he was, and the two have been leaning on each other throughout the process.

“We have a friend going through this right now and she’s been sharing some of her journey. She’s about two months ahead of me on this. And it helped me so much watching that,” he explained.

Despite the diagnosis, Kelley remains positive about the future. He is looking ahead to new music with Lady A and hopes to return to the road with the trio for their upcoming Christmas tour.
