More than two weeks after 18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead near Mississippi’s Horn Island, one of the biggest questions surrounding his final hours has become even more complicated.
A woman identified as Katie McCormack has now been named as the person Wells was allegedly talking with shortly before he disappeared.
But according to Katie’s family, the story being told publicly about that encounter may not be accurate.
As we previously reported, Wells vanished during a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island after traveling there with friends by boat.
His mother reported him missing late that night, and search crews located his body in the water near the island on July 6. Authorities have not announced a cause or manner of death, and the investigation remains active.
From the beginning, friends said Wells chose to remain on the island while they left because he wanted to spend time with a girl he had met that day.
One of his friends recently reiterated that account, saying Wells declined repeated requests to get back on the boat.
But Katie’s sister, Gracie McCormack, is now disputing the suggestion that Wells intentionally stayed behind with her.
According to her account, Katie believed Wells was returning with his own group and did not understand that he had become separated from them.
She also emphasized that Katie has cooperated with investigators and has not been accused of wrongdoing.
“Katie had a conversation and assumed that Nolan was getting ready to get on the boat he came out on,” Gracie told The Daily Mail this week.
“Katie assumed the ‘friends’ telling him to get on the boat wouldn’t have left him.”
Those conflicting accounts have only deepened the concerns of Wells’ family.
Represented by attorney Ben Crump, the family has repeatedly questioned what happened during Nolan’s final hours.
Crump has pointed to the differing narratives as evidence that investigators still need answers about who last saw Wells and whether everyone involved has been completely truthful.
An independent autopsy commissioned by the family (and financed by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick) was unable to determine a cause of death. According to reports, decomposition and the limitations created by the earlier state autopsy prevented definitive conclusions.
The report listed Wells’ cause and manner of death as undetermined and stated that foul play could not be ruled out.
Meanwhile, Mississippi authorities have said they have not found evidence that a crime occurred, though they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death and have asked witnesses to provide information, photos, and videos from Horn Island.
For now, the question of what happened to Nolan Wells on July 4 remains unanswered.

Beloved CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo was arrested Thursday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was stopped while driving southbound on Interstate 43, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday (via TMZ).
Officials reported that Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. He was later booked and released.
Wisconsin uses the term “operating while intoxicated” rather than DUI.
Romo, who is famously gifted at reading NFL defenses and predicting how opposing offenses will react, apparently did not see this one coming.
For a first offense, OWI is generally treated as a civil violation rather than a criminal offense, though penalties can still include fines and other sanctions if a driver is found responsible.
According to multiple reports, Romo had been in Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin State Amateur golf tournament, an event he has participated in over the years.
The traffic stop occurred not far from Burlington, Wisconsin, where the NFL great grew up.
CBS, where Romo has served as the network’s lead NFL game analyst since retiring from football, has not publicly commented on the arrest.
Romo spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2003.
He became the Cowboys’ starting quarterback in 2006 and earned four Pro Bowl selections before retiring following the 2016 season.
Although Dak Prescott recently surpassed him as the franchise’s all-time passing yards leader, Romo still holds the Cowboys’ record for career touchdown passes with 248.
He transitioned directly into broadcasting in 2017, quickly becoming one of the NFL’s highest-profile television analysts.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details about the traffic stop have not yet been released.
Authorities have not announced whether any additional citations or charges are expected beyond the alleged first-offense OWI.

These days, it seems like you can’t step outside without hearing the catchy refrain of Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas.”
The 27-year-old Alabama native is shattering records with her crossover hit, and several major outlets have dubbed her country’s next megastar.
But sudden fame has its drawbacks, as Ella might be learning the hard way these days.
Some of those articles declaring Langley the Queen of Country have been bombarded by comments claiming that the singer is also a diehard Trump supporter.
“She’s MAGA though,” one Facebook user commented on a recent Atlantic profile
“That girl is MAGA,” another chimed in.
Yes, these are divisive times in America, and support for a historically unpopular president (Trump’s approval rating currently sits at just 36 percent) could be enough to derail Ella’s career.
At the same time, her music is the sort of mainstream country that Nashville was churning out in the ’80s and ’90s, so coming out against Trump would surely alienate millions of fans.
So what’s the real story here? Is Ella really a MAGA diehard? Is she more moderate? Is she even political at all?
Well, we don’t really know, as she has yet to comment on the situation.
In all likelihood, we have a Sydney Sweeney 2.0 situation on our hands.
As you may recall, millions jumped to the conclusion that Sydney was MAGA after learning that she’s a registered Republican.
That’s not necessarily true, of course, as there are many Republican critics of Trump.
But MAGA folk were eager to claim the industry’s biggest star as one of their own, so they picked up the narrative and ran with it.
For her part, Sydney avoided the controversy as best she could, just like Ella is doing now,
Why? Because she’s a 20-something woman who’s poised to become one of the biggest stars of her generation, and if she plays her cards right, she might be able to parlay that fame into a 10-figure net worth.
For obvious reasons, Sydney probably cares more about her career than she does about America’s never-ending culture war.
Both Sydney and Ella are products of rural upbringings, so they probably hold some conservative views. And they both work in the entertainment industry, so they probably hold some progressive views.
And they’ll probably continue to infuriate people from all across the political spectrum by continuing to keep mum about those views.
