Mitch McConnell is finally back at the U.S. Capitol.
Unfortunately for anyone hoping that the Kentucky senator’s return would put an end to the mystery surrounding his health, the 84-year-old Republican’s brief appearance on Monday only raised more questions.
McConnell returned to the Senate on September 14 after spending roughly three months away following a fall at his Washington, D.C., home that left him briefly unconscious.
He was subsequently hospitalized and treated for pneumonia before spending weeks in rehabilitation.
McConnell was discharged in August, and it was initially unclear if he would be able to return to the Senate.
And while McConnell was technically back at work, there was one particularly strange detail about his return:
The public had not heard his voice in 92 days.
That changed — somewhat — when McConnell spoke briefly to reporters outside the Senate chamber.
The longtime Republican power broker appeared frail and was using a wheelchair.
His voice was noticeably slower and sometimes faltered as he joked with reporters about whether anyone would still be waiting around to question him after his lengthy absence.
“I must admit. After two years — decades, actually — dodging your questions, I wasn’t sure how many of you would be here today,” McConnell said. “But I’m glad to see you. Time to get back to work, finish the job for this Congress.”
That was about as much access as the press received.
McConnell’s return came after weeks of speculation about his condition, fueled in part by the limited information coming from his office. During his absence, he released occasional updates and photos, but there had been no public video or audio confirming how he was actually doing.
His staff also appeared determined to keep the first day of his return tightly controlled.
McConnell was photographed in a hallway outside the Senate chamber, an area where reporters generally cannot record video except during certain leadership events. HuffPost reporter Jennifer Bendery suggested that McConnell’s staff may have been deliberately avoiding opportunities for the press to capture him on camera.
McConnell himself acknowledged that he isn’t completely recovered.
In a statement released Monday, he said he is “still not quite back to 100%” and explained that the lingering effects of childhood polio have complicated his recovery. Still, he promised Senate Majority Leader John Thune that he would do his best to show up for important votes while continuing physical therapy.
McConnell has already announced that he will retire from the Senate when his current term ends in January 2027.
So, after more than three months of silence, Mitch McConnell is speaking again.
Whether Americans will be hearing much more from him remains another question entirely.

Jennifer Aniston is picking up where the late, great Dolly Parton left off.
In 1980, Parton starred in 9 to 5, producing a hustle-and-grind anthem for worker solidarity everywhere.
(There are many reasons for which unions were among the singer’s most vocal mourners.)
Aniston is committed to making the remake happen. However, there are some lingering obstacles.

According to a report from RadarOnline, the planned remake will be a tribute from Jennifer Aniston to Dolly Parton — when she’s able to make it happen.
“Dolly Parton’s unfortunate passing and the impending end of The Morning Show’s run on Apple TV have changed the complexion of the remake,” the inside source described.
“Jen now has the time to devote to pulling together the package,” the insider explained.
“And,” the source continued, “the public is already showing renewed interest in the original 9 to 5 film.”
The insider noted that it was this 1980 film “which was Parton’s screen acting debut.”
“Jen idolized Dolly,” the source affirmed.
“But,” the insider cautioned, “she has to walk a careful line in the months ahead.”
Aniston will need “to make sure she doesn’t look like she’s exploiting Dolly’s death by continuing to push for this project to get made,” the source reasoned.
Diablo Cody, the critically acclaimed screenwriter behind Juno and Jennifer’s Body, is reportedly part of the remake.
The question of which actors might star in it is … complex. They need more than just acting chops.
Who will star in the ‘9 to 5’ remake?
According to the report, Jennifer Aniston wants at least one big-name star for the Dolly Parton remake.
9 to 5 could conceivably star someone like Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, or Ariana Grande.
One name that immediately floats to the top of the list is Miley Cyrus — who, these days, is just being Miley.
In addition to having a fairly similar vibe to the late, great national treasure, Miley also happens to have been Parton’s goddaughter.
Just a few years ago, they did a “Wrecking Ball” duet to usher in 2023. Phenomenal talents.
“A special edge goes to the young women who are also recording artists because they can follow in Dolly’s footsteps and create an original song for the new film,” the insider dished.
The source suggested that it could be a song “that — like Dolly’s classic theme tune — could go on to capture an Oscar nomination.”
However, the insider warned: “Getting this movie made at such a conservative and risk-allergic company as Disney-owned 20th Century Studios was always going to be an uphill battle.” (Disney does not have the most pro-worker mentality, unlike the themes of the original film.)
“No matter what, Jen is not going to let the renewed interest in the classic 9 to 5 go to waste,” the source affirmed. “She’s already sunk way too much time into this project to allow it to slip through her fingers.”
We’ll be excited to see this project materialize, even if we cannot verify the contents of RadarOnline‘s report.

The Lindsay Clancy mistrial has resulted in endless debate and numerous hot takes across social media.
But perhaps no public figure has responded to the situation with such violent vitriol as Congresswoman Nancy Mace.
Speaking with TMZ outside the Capitol Building on Monday, Mace called for Clancy to be publicly executed as a “warning to women everywhere.”
“Her children are dead, she should be dead too,” Mace told the outlet.
In response to the interviewer’s obvious shock, Mace pressed on.
“She should get the death penalty. It should be public. It should be a public execution,” the South Carolina representative continued, adding that Clancy “deserves nothing less.”
“It could be by firearm, it could be electric chair, I don’t really care,” the lawmaker added. “She’s a serial killer.”
Mace concluded her remarks by noting that the public execution would serve as a “warning to women everywhere — you don’t kill your kids.”
Mace, of course, is not the first politician to lash out at Clancy.
In a recent interview, Senator Ted Cruz compared Clancy to O.J. Simpson and referred to her a “monster mother.”
“This is the modern version of the O.J. Simpson trial,” Cruz told Newsmax last week.
“In this instance, there is no dispute that this monster of a mother murdered all three children … and didn’t just murder them — slowly, deliberately, systematically used exercise bands to strangle the life out one after the other after the other.”
Clancy’s outspoken attorney, Kevin Reddington, was quick to respond to his remarks.
“Senator Cruz, you, sir, are despicable. You clearly do not come close to understanding the basic concept of postpartum psychosis. Quite frankly, that is not surprising,” he said.
Ironically, President Donald Trump was much more measured in his own remarks about the case.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump told reporters Sunday. “I certainly heard that, but look, it’s very sad. There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead.”
You know you’ve gone off the rails when Trump’s comments look rational and reasonable by comparison.
Of course, the president doesn’t have to worry about re-election … we think.

The Duke of Sussex is now 42 years old.
This week marks the first time that he has celebrated his birthday on British soil in years, as far as anyone is aware.
In September of 2022, Queen Elizabeth II had only recently died, and her favorite grandson spent some time in the UK despite the way that certain family members excluded him from her final moments.
This time, however, the family is not in a state of grief. In fact, Meghan Markle seems downright celebratory.
On Instagram, Meghan Markle honored Prince Harry on his 42nd birthday with a tribute.
She shared an array of photos, showing the two of them kissing.
We also saw a bunch of photos of Harry with their children, Archie and Lilibet.
One snap even shows the family dog, Pula, following the trio.
Meghan captioned: “He’s simply the best. Happy birthday, my love.” She included a red heart emoji.
How will returning to the UK change their happy family?
It appears that these photos that Meghan Markle shared of Prince Harry and their children were taken across a span of months.
Were some taken in Montecito? Probably. Were some taken in England? Probably.
Others, as various fans have pointed out on social media, appear to have been snapped along the East Coast.
It remains very likely that we do not always know when or where Harry, Meghan, and their kids are on vacation.
That is for the best. However, it’s unclear how long their ability to avoid the spotlight will last now that they are back in the UK.
It is widely believed that Meghan and Harry have returned to a country that seems to despise them due to King Charles’ poor health.
(Remember, in the US, most people don’t think of British royals, and most of those who do think that Meghan and Harry are just fine — their Netflix stuff has decent reviews, her jam and stuff sells well, etc.)
This is a hefty sacrifice. But their visit with him reportedly went well in July.
It seems that Harry and Meghan are willing to grin and bear being in the UK, where tabloids are churning out nonsensical smears, so that their kids can know their grandfather.
There’s no sign of Harry reconciling with his brother, however. When Peggy takes the throne, they’re likely headed back home.
