Oprah Winfrey is finally addressing the criticism she has faced over the years for helping launch the careers of Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Both men became familiar faces on The Oprah Winfrey Show before eventually landing their own daytime talk shows.

But their careers have taken some very different turns since then — particularly when it comes to politics.

During a recent interview with Emmy Magazine, Oprah was asked about the criticism surrounding her decision to give both men a national platform.

“People criticize me for Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz, because of their politics or their views,” Winfrey acknowledged.

But Oprah isn’t exactly taking responsibility for the paths her former proteges chose to follow.

“Everybody has their own path in life, and it has not one thing to do with me, and I don’t have one thing to do with them,” she said.

Winfrey explained that her original decision to feature the two men had nothing to do with politics.

Instead, she genuinely believed they had something valuable to offer her viewers.

“At the time, the reason and intention behind me giving them their breaks was I thought they had valuable information to share that had been meaningful to me,” she explained.

In Dr. Phil’s case, Winfrey said the two became acquainted during her 1998 legal battle over comments she made about beef and mad cow disease.

McGraw supported her during the lengthy trial, and Oprah was impressed by his practical approach.

“He was so practical, so down to earth, so real,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Oh, you could help a lot of people. You should come on my show.’”

Dr. Oz entered the picture several years later after being introduced to Winfrey by her longtime friend Gayle King.

The television personality said she appreciated Oz’s ability to explain complicated medical subjects in terms that she could understand.

“He explained practical things like colon cancer and bowel movements,” Winfrey said. “I thought he had the language for explaining medical things in a way that was helpful to me.”

So she brought him onto her show, too.

And, as Oprah sees it, that’s where her responsibility ends.

Both men eventually became successful television personalities in their own right. They also became supporters of President Donald Trump, with Oz going on to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and McGraw serving on Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission.

For Oprah, however, the fact that their careers took a political turn years after she helped introduce them to America isn’t something she believes should be pinned on her.

In her mind, she gave them a platform because she believed they could help people.

What they did with that platform afterward was up to them.

Earlier this week, Brad Pitt admitted that he’s been drinking again after seven years of sobriety.

The news came as a surprise to many, as Pitt quit drinking more than a decade ago after being accused of abusive behavior toward Angelina Jolie and at least one of the former couple’s children.

Insiders say Pitt has learned to drink with “discipline,” a feat that many experts believe is simply not possible for alcoholics.

But there are others who note that addiction is not a one-size-fits-all affliction, and it’s possible that through therapy and self-reflection, Brad may have reached a place in his life where he’s able to drink responsibly.

Whatever the case, the Oscar-winner’s confession has prompted a new round of discourse, and several of the nation’s most prominent addiction specialists spoke with the New York Times this week.

“People with an alcohol disorder show a variety of different paths through which they resolve that alcohol use disorder,” said Christopher W. Kahler, director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at the Brown University School of Public Health, adding:

“Some of those involve being completely abstinent, and some of them don’t.”

“We do recommend that people stop drinking entirely and probably continue to stop drinking once they have an alcohol use disorder,” added Dr. Melissa Weimer, an associate professor who specializes in addiction medicine at the Yale School of Medicine.

“But everybody’s different, and they have to make their own personal choices.”

Dr. Alta DeRoo, the chief medical officer of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, took things a step further, telling the Times that she rejects the idea of “a single correct route” to recovery.

DeRoo notes that pushing abstinence as the only path might drive away people who are trying to cut back for purposes of harm reduction.

Yes, the Alcoholics Anonymous abstinence-only approach dominated the conversation for decades, but experts now believe that there are other paths to recovery.

None of that changes the fact that this is just one of several current PR headaches for Team Brad.

All of Pitt’s kids have now dropped his last name, and there are rumors that they may soon come forward with new details of their tumultuous relationship with their megastar dad.

Brad’s PR team is clearly top-notch, but they can only do so much.

A harrowing report out of Florida described a Hailey Dempsey killing her mother, two of her children, and attempting to kill a third before taking her own life.

Now, an odd update in the case may shed light on what was going on before the triple-murder-suicide.

According to investigators, ahead of the homicides, Dempsey got into a fearsome argument with her husband.

The confrontation was about … porn. What?

It was a triple-murder-suicide, and it was almost worse

On May 3, 2026, 27-year-old Hailey Dempsey killed her 55-year-old mother, Valerie DeBoe, and then two of her children, police say.

Dempsey carried out these killings using a gun.

The first victim was her mother, before she fled DeBoe’s Tampa residence with her kids — only to turn her firearm on them.

One of the victims was her 4-month-old. The other was her 4-year-old.

Investigators determined that Dempsey also attempted to fatally shoot her 2-year-old, but missed.

Moments later, police say, Dempsey died by suicide using the same gun.

Family annihilators are stereotypically men who feel that they’ve lost control or that their status is in jeopardy due to their family, but it is not unheard of for a woman to do this.

(People are complex and gender is far from one-size-fits-all, but societal expectations related to men, power, and status are very different.)

Often, but not always, severe mental illness is a factor.

Across social media, numerous people have brought up that Dempsey had a 4-month-old baby, questioning if what transpired may have been related to postpartum psychosis.

This was not about her husband’s phone (but that fight was likely a symptom)

On Thursday, August 13, Plant City Police Chief Richard Mills held a press conference following the conclusion of the investigation.

Mills confirmed what we now know about Dempsey’s final moments and the lives that police say that she took with her.

Additionally, he shared that police had responded to the Dempsey home three times in the days leading up to the triple-murder-suicide.

Mills detailed that two days before the shooting, on May 1, Dempsey and her husband, Jay, had a “verbal altercation” over porn on his cell phone.

He headed off any assumptions, clarifying: “It wasn’t cheating or anything like that, evidently it was just porn, and they were having an argument over that. I think that’s what everything stemmed from.”

Jay, the husband, had spent the previous night at a friend’s house amidst conflicts with his wife.

Sometimes, people get bent out of shape over harmless things, including pornography. But it’s important to emphasize that whatever was on Jay’s phone is not to blame.

It’s clear that Hailey Dempsey urgently needed help — perhaps several types of help — in the days, weeks, and perhaps months leading up to this senseless tragedy.

Now, her family has lost her mother, two of her children, and the woman herself. A woman who might have made very different choices, if we can even call these final moments of violence “choices.”

Our hearts go out to surviving loved ones. Especially to the 2-year-old whom Dempsey “narrowly missed” before taking her own life.

Last month, Tony Romo was arrested on OWI (operating while intoxicated) charges in his home state of Wisconsin.

Shortly thereafter, Romo was placed on leave by CBS, and it’s unclear what sort of consequences might still await him.

Whatever the case, it seems that Tony’s most famous ex is hoping that this moment will turn out to be his rock bottom.

As you may recall, Tony dated Jessica Simpson for two years, beginning in 2007.

Romo was at the peak of his NFL career, and he and Jessica reportedly parted on contentious terms.

These days, Jessica is sober after having battled alcoholism for several years.

And according to a new report from Radar Online, she believes that Tony is also a problem drinker, and she hopes his arrest will serve as a wake-up call.

“Jessica ultimately wishes Tony no harm, and she’s thrilled that this moment — which is, no doubt, embarrassing, could lead him to finally find the same path that has worked so well for her,” a source tells the outlet.

The insider went on to allege that Tony “ushered” Jessica into a world of heavy drinking while they were both in their twenties.

“She was out of control in those days, and Tony was like the Pied Piper of partying and ushered her into a world where alcohol often played a major role,” the source claimed, adding:

“Even after they split, it was too late for her to stop; the die had been cast and drinking to excess had become a rotten way of life that she couldn’t seem to quit.”

Now, it’s important to note that alcoholics are not vampires, and they don’t have the ability to transform other grown adults into problem drinkers.

So if — all these years later — Jessica is still blaming Tony for the fact that she fell into addiction, she might want to examine that impulse.

After all, recovery, as any addict will tell you, begins with accountability.

Of course, Jessica has not said any of these things publicly, and if she still thinks about Tony at all these days, we’re sure she wishes him well. After all, they broke up 17 years ago, and Jess went on to marry a different football player (from whom she’s now divorced).

And if Simpson does believe that Romo has a problem with booze, we’re sure she has nothing but sympathy for his plight.

For now, it remains unclear if Tony will return to the broadcast booth at any point in the 2026 NFL season. For Week 1, J.J. Watt will take his place next to Jim Nantz.

In July of 2025, Malcolm-Jamal Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica where he tragically drowned.

The beloved actor, whose career began when he was a child and spanned many decades, was only 54.

One year later, reports of an alarming inheritance clash between Warner’s mother and his 9-year-old daughter began to circulate.

Now, a settlement has been reached over the late actor’s estate.

People has shared a statement from Pamela Warner, the later actor’s mother, regarding a court settlement.

“On behalf of Pamela Warner, Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother and lifelong business manager, we share the following to address the recent saddening public statements by Tenisha Warner,” the statement began.

Tenisha is the actor’s widow. You can see her recent interview with Gayle King, below.

“Pamela continues to grieve the sudden loss of her son, Malcolm,” Pamela expressed indirectly.

The statement affirmed: “She remains focused on protecting his legacy and the well-being of his daughter and family.”

“Recent claims that Pamela sought to prevent her granddaughter from receiving financial support are untrue,” the statement alleged.

“Malcolm was thoughtful and deliberate in his estate planning to include all his loved ones,” Pamela shared.

“While the trust at issue is in favor of Pamela, his father, and his sister,” the statement acknowledged, “Malcolm provided for his wife and daughter separate and apart from that trust to the tune of millions of dollars.”

The statement shared: “Following Malcolm’s passing, Pamela attempted to resolve these matters privately.” That is often the case.

“When litigation was initiated,” Pamela’s statement continued, “courts in Georgia and California appointed guardians ad litem to represent Malcolm’s daughter.”

A judge will need to sign off on the settlement

The family has since reached a settlement, the statement explains. However, it is still pending approval from the court.

“The agreement provides for Malcolm’s daughter to receive the majority remainder of the Trust and Estate,” Pamela’s statement shares.

Continuing, the statement added: “The Settlement also memorializes that it is in the best interest of Malcolm’s daughter to have a relationship with her grandmother, Pamela.” That sounds complicated.

“Pamela remains hopeful that all parties will support the resolution and that her granddaughter will receive the full benefit of Malcolm’s legacy without further delay,” Pamela aspired.

If Tenisha Warner has anything to publicly say in response, she did not immediately share it.

At this point, it seems unlikely that Pamela and Tenisha Warner will ever see eye to eye on anything.

Clashes between in laws can happen.

But, this time, Malcolm-Jamal was not there to smooth things over between his wife and mother.

(Additionally, he was not there to update his will to include his wife and young daughter without the need of a court battle or settlement. No healthy man in his early 50s believes that he’ll die on vacation.)

We hope that the settlement is as fair as it sounds from this statement. Thus far, we have only heard from one side on this matter.

We have tragic news to report from the world of sports.

Jessica Bang, an 18-year-old Australian golfer who was preparing to compete in a tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, has died after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Bang suddenly collapsed on August 1 while preparing for the tournament.

She was rushed to Synphaet Ramintra Hospital, where she underwent emergency brain surgery and was placed on life support in intensive care.

According to a GoFundMe page posted by Bang’s cousins, Summer and Amelia, she died at the hospital on Thursday, August 13, at 7:20 a.m. local time.

The news was confirmed in a statement shared through the fundraiser.

“We are truly heartbroken by this news,” Bang’s cousins wrote. “However, we would like to continue to remember Jessica and celebrate her achievements, passion, and dedication to golf.”

They went on to remember the teenager for her personality as much as her accomplishments.

“Her sense of humour, together with her cheerful and vibrant personality, will always be remembered and treasured by our family,” they wrote.

Bang had already accomplished a great deal in her young career.

The aspiring professional had recently qualified for the Women’s Professional Golfers’ Association (WPGA) and Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA), putting her on the verge of beginning her rookie season.

In February, Bang won the Ford Women’s NSW Open Regional Qualifying Event at Moss Vale near Sydney.

It was only her fifth professional start.

The WPGA Tour of Australasia described Bang as having enjoyed an “outstanding amateur career.” She had earned her place on the WPGA Tour after competing in qualifying school at the end of 2025.

Now, a promising career has been cut tragically short.

Bang’s family is asking others to remember her not simply for the devastating circumstances surrounding her death, but for the passion and determination she brought to the sport she loved.

At just 18 years old, Jessica Bang had already made her mark on the golf world.

She was only getting started.
