More troubling details are emerging following the sudden death of Hayden Panettiere.

The Heroes and Nashville star was found unresponsive at a South Carolina apartment on Sunday, August 16. She was just 36 years old.

Now, TMZ is reporting that Narcan was found at the scene.

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication commonly used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. However, the discovery does not establish that Panettiere suffered an overdose.

In fact, there is still considerable uncertainty surrounding what happened inside the apartment. Anyone can purchase Narcan over the counter, so it’s entirely possible that someone thought Hayden overdosed and used the product incorrectly.

According to TMZ, two ambulances responded to the residence, which was reportedly the property of Hayden’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.

That fact has raised questions about whether someone other than Panettiere also required medical attention — and, consequently, who may have received the Narcan.

Emergency responders were initially dispatched following a report of a woman in cardiac arrest. Paramedics attempted to revive Panettiere using advanced cardiac life support, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances have understandably prompted renewed questions about the actress’s cause of death.

Panettiere had been remarkably open about her previous struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction. She discussed those battles at length in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, and in interviews about her recovery.

But authorities have not officially determined that substance use caused her death.

An autopsy has been completed, and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office reportedly found no signs of trauma. Additional testing will be necessary before an official cause of death can be established.

Police have also indicated that there were no apparent signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death.

That doesn’t make this tragedy any easier to understand.

Panettiere became a household name after starring as Claire Bennet on Heroes before taking on the role of Juliette Barnes on Nashville. She also appeared in the Scream franchise and spent much of her life in the public eye.

Earlier this year, she spoke about rebuilding her life and looking toward the future.

“I have a lot more life to live,” Panettiere said in an interview with Jay Shetty in May.

Those words now feel especially heartbreaking.

The actress is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, as well as her parents. Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28.

For now, Hayden’s loved ones and fans are left waiting for answers about how a woman who believed she had so much more life ahead of her died so suddenly.

Beloved actress Hayden Panettiere passed away over the weekend. She was only 36.

At this time, investigators are looking into what appears to be a “possible overdose.”

Just months ago, Hayden openly exposed multiple famous men from encounters seared into her memory.

Some on social media are connecting these points. However, investigators say that there is no sign of foul play.

She exposed powerful men without naming them

It was only this spring when Hayden described being effectively served up to an older man on a yacht when she was barely 18.

In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she described a yacht party in the south of France and how an unidentified friend (apparently not Diana Jenkins) betrayed her trust, luring her to a cabin.

“I walked into the cabin and saw a famous thirtysomething British singer-songwriter lying in a bed,” she wrote. “He was shirtless and propped up on a few pillows with his arms positioned behind his head.”

Hayden described: “From the waist down, he was covered by bedsheets, and I could see the outline of his body underneath. … Stella leaned down and whispered in my ear. ‘I want you to get in bed with him. He has a huge d–k.’”

In a state of shock, Hayden initially complied, before jumping up and fleeing the room. She booked a hotel and began packing her bags.

Another incident that Hayden described in her memoir took place when she was 19, attending an exclusive party where most of the celebrities were in their forties and fifties.

“The men were nice enough, asking me questions about Heroes and whether I had plans to film more movies, and I answered them politely,” she described. “But I didn’t feel right, so I never let my guard down.”

Hayden recalled “an Oscar-winning actor and director” coming over to her and saying: “Well, have a good night. Just be careful when you leave because someone spit their gum out somewhere, and I got some on my pants.”

When she looked down at his invitation, she saw that “his testicles were hanging out from his unzipped fly.”

She left the party with all due haste. Hayden wrote that she knew that it was a drunken joke, but had obviously not intended to see anyone’s genitals — let alone a significantly older man’s while she was in her teens.

Did child stardom put her on this path? Or was it something else?

Though many first learned of Hayden Panettiere from Heroes or Nashville or possibly Scream 4, she was a child actress.

In the ’90s, that meant playing little Lizzie Spalding on Guiding Light.

Which, in turn, meant that she spent a lot of time working, facing rejections, and receiving enormous praise — all at an age when healthy childhood development would have her in school and leading a normal life with friends.

Did growing up as a child star leave her primed to be targeted by creepy adults, to be in an abusive relationship, and then to die tragically in her mid-30s?

We don’t know. But a lot of people have pointed out that she died only six months after fellow child star Michelle Trachtenberg passed away. The two knew each other and died the same year.

Some on social media are spinning conspiracy theories, suggesting that whichever British musician — who would be in his 50s by now — or some other adult man might have moved to silence her.

We want to emphasize that investigators have not yet found any sign of foul play.

Hayden had worked on her sobriety. She’d written a memoir. She even came out as bi earlier this year. And she was a mother.

But having so much to live for doesn’t mean that terrible accidents do not take place. Some on social media have noted that a relapse can be fatal when someone has lost their former tolerance after choosing sobriety for an extended time. (That is speculation and remains unconfirmed at this time.)

We will continue to mourn Hayden and to keep her loved ones in our thoughts. Right now, we are all in shock.

Millions were shocked on Sunday by the news that actress Hayden Panettiere had passed away at the age of 36.

Amid widespread speculation about the cause of Panettiere’s death, new details are emerging about her final hours.

And while this detail has yet to be confirmed, many are convinced that at the time of her death, Hayden was in the company of her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.

Hickerson is a native of South Carolina, and he and Panettiere flew into Greenville from Los Angeles the day before her death.

It’s unclear if he was the one who discovered her body and called 911, but it seems likely that he was her reason for being on the East Coast.

The pair met in 2018 after he moved to LA to try to make it as an actor.

According to Page Six, Hickerson found minimal success, and his “limited acting credits” include an appearance in the 2017 thriller film M.F.A.

In the early years of their relationship, Hickerson was arrested twice for allegedly assaulting Panettiere.

According to a police report from 2019, Hayden told police that Brian struck her “with a closed fist on the right side of her face.”

The following year, she was granted a restraining order against him. In 2023, Panettiere hinted that she and Hickerson had reconciled.

In an interview with TMZ from May (above), Hickerson described Hayden as “the most talented person I’ve ever met.”

He added that “it doesn’t matter who you spend Saturday night with,” explaining that it’s more important “who you spend all day Sunday with.”

Many have noted that that remark has taken on a macabre tone now that Hayden passed away on a Sunday.

Her passing was confirmed last night by her father and her publicist.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” Skip Panettiere said in a statement provided by her representative.

“There’s an investigation ongoing,” publicist Kasey Kitchen said in a statement.

We’ve heard Joy-Anna and Jinger Duggar discuss their childhoods, including eye-popping moments that they sometimes seem to gloss over.

Now, Jinger is admitting that, as an adult, she’s found herself seeking an “older mentor.”

Adult friendships can be hard to find. That is even truer when you grew up in an extreme and isolated environment.

But some think that Jinger bonding with older women might be a swipe, however unintended, at Michelle.

Jinger has a ‘not old, but older, mentor’

During a recent episode of the Jinger & Jeremy podcast, one of the eponymous hosts sat down with Joy-Anna.

“There’s a couple that I’m thinking of that are not in the season with kids and so they already they’ve had kids, or they are beyond,” Jinger described, “that and it’s really sweet because then I’m like it feels Like a godly older mentor.”

(As we have previously explained, some evangelical communities use “seasons” to refer to portions of one’s life, like chapters. This in-group terminology works to set people apart from members of the out-group.)

“Not old, but older, mentor and that’s also helpful for me,” Jinger continued, “especially living away from family and working through a lot of things like that.”

She commented: “It’s been helpful for me to have the wisdom and the care.”

Jinger went on to praise the “trustworthiness” of having an older mentor friend like the one that she has found.

Joy-Anna seems to agree.

The two say that they are both seeking adult friendships that are free of gossip and false pretenses.

(Maybe we’re just too far removed from the Duggar family’s subculture to understand, but it’s unclear what grown adults in their 20s and 30s would be gossiping about in a way that the sisters would find off-putting.)

It is very common for people to find it harder to make friends as adults. Someone whose fundamentalist background rules out common shortcuts (can’t really attend trivia nights if you’re unfamiliar with almost all arts and entertainment news from the past century) likely face additional challenges.

Is this intended to shade Michelle?

Additionally, both Jinger and Joy discussed the ways in which their limited social lives did not include discussion of their reality TV family lives when they were growing up.

They likened it to a “taboo” to speak of their TLC adventures. That … doesn’t sound super healthy.

Additionally, Joy spoke about how she was “glued to his hip” after marrying husband Austin Forsyth, as she didn’t really have adult bonds that weren’t familial in one sense or another.

All of this and more led a lot of folks on social media to take one message away from this:

Are both women deliberately shading Michelle Duggar?

Simply put, even if Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were good people (they’re not), there is no possible way for them to have shown each and every child the love and positive attention that they deserve.

Commenters across social media have noted that this sort of “older mentor friend” dynamic is not uncommon for people who had bad childhoods or who have parents who are terrible people (or both).

If you feel like you’re walking on eggshells with your mom, then you might seek out a substitute mom — even if she isn’t old enough to be your actual mother unless she was a child bride — to give you a healthy dynamic.

Even if the Duggars likely struggle to recognize what a healthy dynamic is, they might still seek one instinctively. Everyone deserves love and emotional support without the whole abusive-nightmare-cult thing.

Jinger probably isn’t intentionally slamming her awful mom here. It’s just that people familiar with this family understand what sort of person Michelle is, and may understand some of Jinger’s emotional baggage a little better than she does.

Panettiere died on Sunday, just five days before her 37th birthday. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the devastating news in a statement describing his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature.”

Hayden had spent years publicly confronting personal struggles, including addiction and postpartum depression following the 2014 birth of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

In her final months, however, the actress appeared determined to focus on what came next.

During another interview promoting her memoir, Panettiere described herself as “a work in progress” and said she was taking life one day at a time.

“I’m doing the work, and I’m doing my best,” she said.

“My body just exploded,” she characterized.

Courtney survived. She is also channeling the pain from that time into her new album.

‘I almost died’

Over the weekend, the 62-year-old Hole singer shared an Instagram video to update fans on several years of news.

Ostensibly about her upcoming music, Courtney ended up sharing a lot about a health battle that led to multiple hospitalizations — and had doctors warning her that she was going to die.

“I went to England in 2019, and when I went there, you know, my body just exploded,” she characterized.

“It just exploded,” she continued, soon abandoning hyperbole. “And I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died.”

Courtney detailed: “I lost all my hair. I was about 100 pounds.”

“And they told me I was going to die, and I didn’t believe them,” Courtney informed her fans and followers.

She elaborated on how she refused to accept that death was coming, likening it to having challenged authority even as a child.

“I never really lost my ability to see that … red was red. Despite them telling me that red was blue,” Courtney recalled of her childhood.

“And, so, when they said, ‘You’re going to die,’ I just didn’t believe them,” she explained. “And, somehow, I got better.”

Courtney announced: “I’m healthy, which is amazing.”

‘I’m fine now’

“I just wasn’t public about being sick,” Courtney acknowledged. “I don’t want to be public.”

She emphasized: “I’m fine now.”

One of the things that Courtney said is essential to her overall wellness is music. Her music, specifically.

Her long-anticipated upcoming album began to form during this dark time in her life.

Now, she is looking forward to performing again and traveling — things that doctors had told her that she would never get to do again.

“When I made it,” Courtney said of her record in her Instagram caption, “I believed this was my last record so I made the record I always wanted to make.”

She recalled: “I was in the hospital mostly but when I wasn’t all I did was write & record it.”

Courtney affirmed: “I want to tour more than anything. & I want to sing.”

She added: “That’s what keeps my soul & body happy.”

We hope that she is able to keep both her soul and body happy (and healthy) as she treats the world to new music.
