Seniors and teens becoming more important in Alaska’s workforce, statistics show

As Alaska’s population of working-age adults shrinks, according to economists, other demographic groups have become bigger segments of the labor force: seniors and teenagers.

Residents who are 65 and older made up 6.2% of the Alaska worker population in 2023 after steadily increasing over two decades, according to an analysis by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development. In 2003, that age group made up just 1.8% of all working Alaskans, according to the data.

For teenagers, the two-decade trend has been different. In 2003, teenagers 14 to 17 years old made up 4.4% of Alaska’s resident workers, but that percentage dropped in subsequent years – reflecting national trends — until it bottomed out at 2.7% during the COVID-19 pandemic year of 2020. Since then, the percentage of teens in Alaska’s workforce rebounded, and it hit 3.7% in 2023.

The information is detailed in a pair of articles in the current issue of Alaska Economic Trends, the department’s monthly magazine published by the department’s research section.

The analysis of  senior workers was written by state labor economist Karinne Wiebold; labor economist Rob Kreiger reported on the labor trends among  teenagers.

A big difference between older and younger workers is the degree of the male-female pay gap, Wiebold’s analysis showed.

For workers 65 and older, the gap is wide. Men in that age group had average annual earnings of $54,835, compared to average earnings of$38,797 for women 65 and older.

In dollar terms, older women in Alaska earned 71 cents for every $1 earned by men 65 and older.

The gap widens with age, the analysis found. The gap existed even in the highest-paid job category, the analysis found. Top male executives who were at least 65 years old earned $112,799 a year on average in 2024, while top female executives in the same age group earned an average of $87,514.

Statewide, across all age groups, women earn 73 cents for every $1 earned by men, her article said.

Wiebold said numerous factors contribute to the wage gap and the way it widens with age. Those might include historic discrimination, but other factors are work experience, training, education, hours worked, job and industry choice and time out of the workforce for reasons like childcare and elder care, she said.

“All of these choices and conditions are amplified with age,” she said by email.

In contrast, the male-female pay gap among teens aged 14 to 17 was very small, Kreiger’s analysis showed. On average, girls in that age group earned 96 cents for every $1 earned by boys in 2023, the statistics showed.

For the most part, teenaged boys and girls worked in similar jobs. Accommodation and food-service jobs accounted for more than a third of employment, while retail jobs accounted for 18.4%.

By working mostly in similar industries and at similarly entry-level positions, the teens “haven’t had time for other factors to influence the wage gap,” Weibold said.

Demographic shift

Alaska’s loss since 2013 of residents of prime working ages, considered to be 18 to 64, has been well-documented.

There are multiple and interplaying causes, said Dan Robinson, research chief for the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Part of the reason is net outmigration – with more people moving away from Alaska than moving to the state. Another factor is the aging of Alaska’s population, he said.

There are also numerous responses to the loss of Alaskans of prime working age residents. One has been more employment of nonresident workers, he said.

Nonresident hire hit a new record in 2023, the department said earlier this year.

Increased workforce participation by teens and seniors is part of the multifaceted picture, he said.

“For teens, it’s because a higher percentage of them have been working since the pandemic, and for seniors there are simply more of them,” Robinson said by email. “It could be that seniors are postponing retirement as a result of the worker shortage, and for teens they are likely lured into the labor force by recent wage growth in low wage jobs,”

State officials and employers have also taken actions to entice more seniors and teens into the workforce.

Last month, the state marked an official “Employ Older Workers Week,” with a Sept. 21 gubernatorial proclamation noting that “older workers play an increasingly important role in maintaining Alaska’s economy and leadership in the global marketplace, adding depth in perspective, social networks, and talent.”

The proclamation mentioned the Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training program, which trains people 55 and older who might have encountered barriers to employment in the past, such as disabilities.

As for the young Alaskans, the Legislature this spring passed a bill allowing workers as young as 18 to serve alcohol at restaurants. Key support for the bill came from the Alaska Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant, and Retailers Association, which cited a labor shortage as one of the significant challenges facing its members.

However, that labor shortage might not continue.

“There are early signs that the labor shortage is easing and we’re returning to a more normal balance between job openings and job seekers, but we’re still gathering and thinking about that data,” Robinson said.

Is Shania Twain divorced?

Given how many of her classic ballads touch on the topic of heartbreak, we suppose it’s no surprise that yes, Shania is divorced.

And in the style of sad country songs everywhere, her first marriage ended because of an affair.

Shania Twain Divorced Mutt Lange After She Caught Him Cheating

Yes, Shania parted ways with legendary music producer Mutt Lange after she caught him having an affair with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

Bur Shania had the last laugh, as she’s currently married to Marie-Anne’s former husband, Frederic Thiébaud.

Shania spoke about her divorce during a recent episode of the “Great Company With Jamie Laing” podcast.

“Forgiveness is in the family of letting go. But forgiveness, more specifically for me anyway, is not about forgetting necessarily,” she said.

“It’s about understanding the other person, and that might mean that they’re wrong … Maybe you believe forever that whatever they did was wrong,” Shania continued, adding:

“Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It’s his mistake. Not my mistake.”

Shania Twain Says She’s Moved On From Painful First Marriage

“So sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with. And I don’t know what that is, but it’s not … That’s not my weight,” she continued.

“My father’s a better example, OK, because this is someone that I totally forgive.”

Shania has spoken previously about the abuse she endured as a child and her long journey toward forgiving her stepfather.

In an earlier interview on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Shania said that when they both learned their spouses had cheated, her now-husband handled the news much better than she did.

“He was so thoughtful about it all … It was not cool with him, but he was smarter about it,” she said.

“I was uncontrollably fragile over it, which I had never felt before ever because I thought for once I was stable,” Shania added.

“I really believe that I’m safe. So that really devastated me I think more than any other instability I’ve ever felt,” Twain added at the time.

Fortunately, Shania found her happy ending, and she and Frederic are still going strong.

To paraphrase one of Twain’s best-known songs, Frederic is clearly still the one!

Diane Keaton Dead: Stars Reacts to Loss of a Legend

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s a sad time in Hollywood.

Earlier this week, we learned that Diane Keaton had died at the age of 79.

The Oscar-winning actress was renowned for roles in The Godfather, Annie Hall, The Father of Bride franchise, as well as the recent Book Club movies.

In addition to her impressive big screen career, Keaton also ran home decor and eyewear companies, authored a handful of books and released a holiday single titled “First Christmas” in 2024.

She was a force, and it’s clear Keaton left a major mark within the entertainment industry.

“They say don’t meet your heros but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months,” Mandy Moore wrote on Instagram alongside an image from the 2007 movie Because I Said So. “An honor of a lifetime.”

Elsewhere, Kimberly Williams-Paisley (who portrayed Keaton’s onscreen daughter in the Father of the Bride films) reflected on their time together.

“Diane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life,” she captioned her social media tribute. “You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter.”

Here is a look at how other celebrities have reacted to Diane Keaton’s passing…

Bette Midler: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus: “She was a revolutionary actor-both comedically and dramatically. She was a singular artist. I am so grateful to her and may she rest in peace. @diane_keaton #dianekeaton.”

Michael Douglas: “RIP to my friend Diane Keaton. A heartbreaking loss of one of the greatest icons in our industry. I have so many fond memories of working with Diane on our film And So It Goes nearly twelve years ago. Sending my deepest condolences to the Keaton family during this difficult time.”

Mia Farrow: “She was an absolutely wonderful actress- and a rare and fascinating person. Thoughts with her children and sisters. Rest in peace Diane.”

Clint Eastwood: “Rest in Peace, Diane Keaton. In 1991, Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals honored Clint and Diane Keaton as Man and Woman of the Year — a moment that quietly brought together two artists defined by integrity, independence, and endurance.”

Ben Stiller: “Diane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”

Viola Davis: “No!! No!!! No!! God, not yet, NO!!! Man… you defined womanhood. The pathos, humor, levity, your ever-present youthfulness and vulnerability — you tattooed your SOUL into every role, making it impossible to imagine anyone else inhabiting them. You were undeniably, unapologetically YOU!!! Loved you. Man… rest well. God bless your family, and I know angels are flying you home.”

Keaton is survived by two sons. May she rest in peace.

Sister Wives: Madison Brush TRASHES Dad as a Fraud, Huge Liar

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Madison Brush is not holding anything back.

Earlier this week, the Sister Wives cast member delved into her relationship with her estranged father Kody Brown after posting an inspirational quote on social media about deciding what is “worth your energy.”

When a follower replied to the TLC personality, saying they “lack this skill,” Madison shared a screenshot of her DM response on her Instagram Stories, which read as follows:

Your dad saying lies about you for the entire world to hear teaches it to you REAL QUICK.

(TLC)

Like we said above: Holding nothing back.

In a subsequent IG Stories post, the 29-year old replied to an anonymous question who asked whether she had sought “professional therapy” to work through her complex relationship with her dad.

“Yes. I see a professional therapist on and off,” she wrote. “I have benefited a lot from this. I think anyone [who] comes from complex family dynamics could benefit from it.”

We strongly agree.

It’s unfortunately been a constant theme for as long as we can remember now that Kody is pretty much a selfish and awful parent.

Kody Brown is a polarizing reality TV personality. (TLC)

“I think most of the relationships between me and my adult children are strained,” the dad of 18 acknowledged on the October 5 episode of Sister Wives. “It’s an issue of trash talk and innuendo, and it has challenged loyalties and trust on all sides.”

It sure sounds to us as if Kody is accusing his kids there of talking trash about him.

For her part, Madison recently detailed her yearlong estrangement from Kody on the TLC program, growing emotional as she reflected on the distance between the pair.

“You want your dad to show up,” she said through tears during the show’s Sept. 28 episode. “You want reconciliation. I know I played a part and I’m angry because I’m still trying to learn to not be disappointed.”

(TLC)

Last year, Maddie detailed how little contact she has with her father.

In general, even Kody has admitted that he has next to no connection with nearly any of his kids.

In November, two years after Janelle and Kody separated, Madison confirmed she had cut off her dad due to his lack of boundaries in their fractured family.

“I’m still learning how to just see him for who he is,” Madison added in a confessional on this latest season premiere. “I’m trying to understand that maybe he didn’t know how to show up. He might be hurting.”

As you can see, Brush is doing all she can to give her father the benefit of the doubt. We’re not certain Kody deserves it.

Sister Wives airs at 10/9c on Sunday nights on TLC.
