Southeast Alaska port development named for Frank Murkowski

The Republican trio served together in Congress for more than two decades, and while the Anchorage port is named for the late Rep. Don Young and the Anchorage airport is named for the late Sen. Ted Stevens, their congressional colleague, Sen. Frank Murkowski, is more at home in Southeast.

The Wrangell borough assembly on Oct. 27 voted unanimously to name the former 6-Mile sawmill property, which the borough is developing as an industrial site, as the Frank H. Murkowski Deepwater Port of Wrangell, Alaska.

Murkowski got his Alaska start in Southeast in Ketchikan and Wrangell 70 years ago before moving into politics and public service in Juneau and Washington, D.C.

In introducing the naming resolution at the Oct. 27 assembly meeting, Borough Manager Mason Villarma spoke to Murkowski’s long-term contributions to the state and the community, adding, “he has been an advocate of the site for a long, long time.”

The assembly last month adopted an ordinance, setting out requirements for naming public property after an individual. The port is the first use of that new ordinance.

“That’s very thoughtful of them,” Murkowski said in an interview the day after the assembly vote, though he noted, “That Polish name doesn’t sound very Southeast.”

Talking about the borough’s big plans for the property, he said: “Hopefully, all the things we hear are going to happen out there happen.”

The municipality purchased the 42 acres more than four years ago for $2.5 million, looking to develop and lease out the acreage for industrial tenants. The aim is to replace some of the jobs and economic activity lost in town when the mill and logging industry started shutting down in the 1990s.

Alaska Marine Lines is working to move its barge landing and freight operations to the property; Tideline Construction runs its scrap metal recycling and Southeast Alaska construction business from the site; and the borough is working with JAG Marine Group, the Ketchikan shipyard operator, to look for state and federal funding to build a multi-hundred-million-dollar large-scale shipyard to work on government vessels.

Villarma noted that the U.S. Economic Development Administration has awarded Wrangell about $30 million toward site work — utilities and roads — to prepare the former mill property for use as a deepwater industrial port.

“This couldn’t come at a most opportune time for us,” he told the assembly. “And I think it’s going to help attract investment to the site and create some additional buzz.”

Murkowski is 93 years old. He and his wife, Nancy, spend their summers in Wrangell. He came to Southeast with the U.S. Coast Guard in the mid-1950s and then went into banking and managed the National Bank of Alaska Wrangell branch from 1963 to 1966 and served on the school board.

He was named commissioner of the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development in 1966, then returned to banking until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1980.

He left the Senate in 2002, winning election as governor and serving one term.

And although he questioned whether his Polish name fits in Southeast, the Murkowski Port is not alone. There is an island in Southeast, Kosciusko Island, just north of Prince of Wales Island, named in 1879 after Polish citizen Tadeusz Kościuszko, who fought in the American Revolutionary War as a volunteer engineer, according to the Dictionary of Alaska Place Names published by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The news also revealed that another special moment will take place during the evening, a tribute planned to honor the late country music legend Dolly Parton and her lasting impact on music and entertainment.

Lainey Wilson will return to host the CMA Awards for the third consecutive year, marking her second time leading the ceremony solo. She first co-hosted the show in 2024 alongside Peyton Manning and Luke Bryan before taking on the role by herself in 2025.

Wilson is also a triple nominee heading into the ceremony. Meanwhile, reigning Male Vocalist of the Year Cody Johnson landed four nods, Kacey Musgraves earned five, Miranda Lambert secured seven nominations and Ella Langley leads this year’s nominees with nine nods, after taking home three CMA Awards last year.

With 70 career nominations, Lambert holds the record for the most CMA Awards nominations by a female artist. Tim McGraw is also celebrating a major career milestone, earning his 40th career CMA Awards nomination this year with a nod for Musical Event of the Year. He’ll mark the occasion with a performance during the ceremony.

Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape, Faces Possibility of Life In Prison

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault following a lengthy criminal trial in the UK.

The comedian and actor was convicted of four sexual offenses involving multiple women, marking a stunning development in a case that has followed him for several years.

Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court in London on Tuesday.

The verdicts came after jurors spent more than six hours deliberating over allegations involving six women.

The charges stemmed from alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009, a period during which Brand’s entertainment career was rapidly gaining momentum. He faced three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault (via Deadline).

Brand pleaded not guilty to all seven charges and maintained that his sexual encounters with the women were consensual.

The trial lasted approximately three weeks, with prosecutors presenting accounts from six women who described alleged sexual misconduct at various locations, including a hotel, a bar, workplaces, and Brand’s home.

Prosecutors characterized Brand as a calculated sexual predator, arguing that the women’s accounts demonstrated a troubling pattern of behavior.

They also maintained that the women had no reason to fabricate their allegations.

Brand’s defense team took a very different approach, arguing that the accusations had been influenced by media coverage, particularly a 2023 documentary that featured allegations of sexual misconduct against the entertainer.

His attorney, Ian Winter, argued that the documentary had effectively “poisoned the well” of justice by encouraging women to reconsider encounters that had occurred years earlier.

Brand also took the witness stand during the trial, acknowledging that he had been promiscuous and had sometimes used his celebrity status to facilitate sexual encounters. However, he insisted that he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.

The entertainer’s wife, Laura Brand, also testified in his defense. She described him as a caring husband while acknowledging that his previous promiscuity had caused her emotional pain.

The case represents a dramatic fall for someone who once enjoyed considerable success in both British television and Hollywood.

Brand became widely known through comedy and television appearances before landing roles in movies including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He was also briefly married to pop superstar Katy Perry.

In more recent years, Brand moved away from mainstream entertainment and developed a substantial online following through videos discussing Christianity, wellness, and conspiracy theories.

Now, his criminal convictions add another significant chapter to an already deeply controversial public life. And while Brand spent the trial insisting that the allegations were false, a jury has now found him guilty of multiple serious offenses, which will likely lead to a lengthy prison sentence.

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.
