How The Bears Are Leaning Into QB Caleb Williams’ Limitless Playmaking

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — No one wants to tell a receiver that he’s running a route where he’s not going to get the ball, where he’s not even a viable option in the play’s design. But it happens quite often. One of football’s most popular concepts, “Dagger,” includes a vertical route where a receiver effectively sprints downfield without any hope of a reception. He runs the route because it’ll create space for another pass-catcher to get open. There are a few names for this type of play, including “The Love of the Game Route.” But Bears receiver Kalif Raymond told me recently that those types of routes don’t exist in Chicago’s offense — not with Caleb Williams throwing the football. “There’s no such thing,” said Raymond, who joined the Bears in free agency this offseason. “[Williams can use] every blade of grass and even the oxygen particles that are in the air because this dude can jump sideways. I was like, ‘What?’ It’s almost like he feels better when he’s under duress or when he’s doing something crazy. … He can see you from all over the field. He can make that throw from anywhere on the field. It’s really cool to see that’s the capability back there.” The play is never over. Now, don’t get me wrong, head coach Ben Johnson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor have worked diligently with Williams on completing more of his passes in structure — taking what the defense gives him. That’s how the team hopes to get their star QB from a 58.1% completion percentage to 70%, which is the goal. But Williams went No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft in large part because of his arm talent and his creativity. At times in his rookie season, it felt like the Bears’ offense corrupted those strengths — leading to mistakes and missed opportunities. When Johnson arrived in 2025, it seemed he prioritized getting the quarterback back on track, developmentally. They focused on using the offensive system first, then applying creativity only when it was necessary. And there’s no doubt he’s more comfortable in Johnson’s offense in year two. “It’s a hell of a lot more fun for me than it was last year,” Williams told reporters earlier in camp. “I was saying it to Coach Studes [running backs coach Eric Studesville], ‘Dude, I feel like I was drowning, trying to breathe or stay alive and wait for a boat to come around last year.’ “Now this year, it’s being able to start where we finished last year, play calls and words and verbiage and speak the same language. It’s being able to grow more from an earlier stage [and] maybe doing it a little bit earlier in the season. … That’s the advantage.” And after seeing “Cardiac Caleb” lead the NFL with six fourth-quarter comebacks last season, the Bears are embracing more of what makes him unique — his creativity when plays break down. It’s what Taylor calls “the next step.” “That’s something we’ve tried to really put a big emphasis on this offseason,” Taylor told me in early August. “After a year with Caleb, watching his escapability and watching his second-play ability, [it’s our job] to make sure that everybody’s on the same page.” How will the Bears do that exactly? “We coach every time that comes up, whether it’s seven-on-seven or team situations. We’re going to coach in the following meeting,” Taylor said. “What was our reaction? What should we do? What do we expect right here? Let the guys talk a little bit so that we’re all on the same page of understanding. There’s not hard and fast rules, but there’s kind of guidelines. … We can communicate through our body language with the quarterback and where we’re expected to be.” A lot can go wrong when a quarterback breaks the pocket and steps into a second-chance opportunity. It’s a moment when the signal-caller might force a pass into a tight window for an interception. It’s also a moment when a QB might scramble and get hurt. And it’s also a moment when the quarterback might take a sack — or, even worse, a sack-fumble. This is where we can see a few more qualities that make Williams special. He doesn’t throw many interceptions, keeping his interception percentage at an absurdly low 1.1% in 2024 and 1.2% in 2025. He also found a way to limit his sacks last season, dropping his sack percentage from 10.8% in 2024 (31st) to 3.8% in 2025 (fourth). “He knew when he could take chances and not. And certainly when you’re in that, ‘Hey, we’re in fourth downs from here on out’ mode, I think that kind of helps his mentality,” Johnson told me at the NFL owners meetings. “It’s so curious with him: He’s just always been such a great protector of the ball. For a guy that can be a little bit aggressive at times with some of these throws he makes, he rarely puts it in harm’s way. “And so I think that’s a little bit unique to him. And so maybe it’s one of those things we just need to encourage him to open it up a little bit more earlier in games, when he might be just a little bit more conservative in some of the decision-making early in games.” The Bears trust Williams to make the right play. And … “We got a great quarterback who can make the play right,” second-year receiver Luther Burden III told me. The difference is subtle but meaningful. When a play works, Williams needs to execute it. When a play fails, Williams can make up for it. “You’re just not limited in any way with Caleb,” Bears receivers coach Antwaan Randle El told me. “We know we’re not limited. So the sky — we just keep pushing from that standpoint because our quarterback has a great arm. He can run and he can throw it and he can run with it. We got a lot that we can do with him, so that’s why it’s not coaching our guys differently. It’s just making sure they know what to do. Because if you’re in the right spot, he’ll get the ball to you.” At practice in early August, Williams didn’t shy away from breaking structure. There was one example when he felt immediate pressure off the blindside, scrambled right and found receiver Rome Odunze, who was working his way toward the sideline. Odunze took off upfield, weaving his way into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown. At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Odunze is an obvious candidate to help Williams generate big plays in any situation. But he might not even be the most obvious candidate. If you think about Patrick Mahomes’ creative magic, you also think about tight end Travis Kelce — and the way he finds space when the play breaks down. So it might actually be Bears ascending tight end Colston Loveland who finds a role as the team’s go-to target in these situations. That’s who I think of first, at least. “That’s the first I’d like to think of too,” Taylor told me. “I think that’ll start to differentiate itself as they start to read his body language, where he’s going on certain plays, how he’s reacting and how they can fit within the open space in a play.” It might not need to be one guy. That’s the beauty of this ascending group of young playmakers, with Williams, Odunze, Burden and Loveland having a combined six seasons in the NFL. They’re growing up in an offense where the limit does not exist. No one wants to tell a pass-catcher that he’s running a route where he’s not going to get the ball. In the Bears’ offense, no one has to.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports

Ella Langley Debuts Two New Tattoos, Including Sweet Tribute to Her Grandmother

Ella Langley has added two new meaningful tattoos to her growing collection of permanent artwork. The ink came just hours before Langley took the stage for her sold-out show at Austin’s Moody Center on Thursday, August 13, making the already-memorable night even more special.

According to a behind-the-scenes TikTok video, Langley invited out Utah-based fine-line tattoo artist Hannah Matthews of And You Tattoo to create two designs that hold a deeply personal connection to her life. The artist documented the entire trip in a series of videos, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at her travel day, the tattoo session, Langley’s concert and some time spent exploring Austin before making the journey back home.

On day two, she shared snippets of her set up backstage and the moment she got to give Langley her newest tattoos. The larger of the two ink pieces was placed on the country star’s forearm and included a bird perched on a branch. The design serves as a tribute to her late grandmother as it was inspired by a cherished photo she had. Matthews explains that they noticed Langley had some extra space on her wrist so they decided to add a second tattoo of her dog’s name.

Langley was clearly happy with the finished products because she commented on Matthews’ post writing, “Can you come back already?”

The tattoo artist stuck around to watch the show, giving her the chance to see Langley debut her newest ink onstage. The two permanent additions now join the country star’s growing collection of sentimental artwork, many of which tells a story about her life, family and career.

Among her tattoos are butterflies and a dandelion inspired by her latest album, Dandelion, as well as a treble clef, several roses and a pine tree, representing Alabama’s state tree. She also has a reference to Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” the first song she learned to play on guitar, along with a “Heart on Fire” design inspired by Eric Church.

Her collection also includes the coordinates of her parents’ home, a bumblebee, as a tribute to her mother’s nickname for her, a cowgirl silhouette, a playing card from a trip to Las Vegas, a feather, and more.

Ella Langley will bring her new tattoos back to the stage this week with more stops on her Dandelion tour taking place across Wisconsin, Illinois and Arkansas. Next week she will return to her home state for back-to-back performances in Auburn, AL on August 28 and August 29.

Justin Moore Gets Candid About Sobriety, 30-Day Rehab and Recent Health Scare

In June, Justin Moore revealed he would be stepping away from touring temporarily to focus on his health. He returned to the road one month later and is now opening up about his decision to enter a 30-day rehabilitation program, providing an update on his sobriety and revealing details about a recent health scare.

Justin Moore Opens Up About His Sobriety Journey

Moore recently sat down with his friend and fellow country star Tracy Lawrence on TL’s Road House podcast and reflected on his journey to sobriety. The singer explained that his relationship with alcohol changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. What initially started as an occasional drink eventually became an everyday habit, which he admits then began taking a toll on his career, family life and overall well-being.

‘A Drink at Five Turned Into Three at Noon’

“I didn’t drink until I was 21. Don’t ask me how or why. And then almost 20 years, I never had any issue whatsoever. And then COVID hit and we were doing our podcast at the time and literally nothing else. And man, idle hands are the devil’s workshop is a real thing. And a drink at five turned into three at noon. And then before you know it, it’s all day, every day. And not even really getting smashed or just constantly having a cocktail. And it started affecting my life,” he revealed.

Moore Realized He Needed Help

At first, Moore was confident that no one else had noticed the change in his drinking habits as he considered himself to be “high functioning.” However, it got to a point where he noticed just how much energy he was putting into drinking compared to the more important aspects of his life. So he finally made the decision to get help.

“I came home one Sunday as we do every Sunday, usually on the bus…And I walked straight upstairs, told my wife, I go, ‘I got to go get help. I just got to do it. I have to do it.’ And it wasn’t fun. I mean, I don’t know if you’ve ever done anything like that, but it wasn’t fun. But I just looked at it like a business trip. And so today’s my 65th day sober.”

Lawrence acknowledged that in their line of business, a lot of their days are centered around alcohol, between the number one parties, backstage events, weekend shows and more.

“It’s all fun and games when you’re young, but there comes a time as we get older when you got to step back and go, ‘This is not really good for me as a human being anymore,” he stated.

Moore Opens Up About What He Faced in Treatment

Moore says he went to a treatment facility outside of Nashville, where he went through all the positive and negative moments of his life, spanning his earliest memories all the way to the present day and the trauma, relationships and more that came in between.

“It was awful. I’m telling you, freaking awful, just the emotional rollercoaster and the purging of all that stuff. And because you get to a certain place in life where you’re dealing with some things and you’ve got these issues and you’re masking them, sometimes it’s so far buried back that you don’t even remember why you started. And you don’t even know.”

After everything he’s been through, Moore says he’s proud of himself and feels more like himself than he has in a long time. He acknowledges that getting back on stage sober has been an adjustment, but says there have been plenty of positives that have come from getting the help he needed.

“I’m singing better. I remember the shows. And again, it wasn’t constant with me. It was just that one night where you go, ‘I didn’t do my best.’ And these fans, man, they deserve our best. And I lost sight of that for a little while, and I’m not ashamed to admit it…There was a lot of the therapy stuff. But fortunately, it was only once a week. But I mean, it helped. I mean, I’m not going to lie and say it didn’t.”

Justin Moore Reveals a Recent Health Scare

Along with getting sober, Justin Moore took this time to get every aspect of his health in check. Fans may have recently noticed that the “Small Town USA” singer has had some weight gain around his neck. He explains that he has developed a benign growth that if removed could impact his singing and speaking voice, as he was told surgery would be “very, very difficult.”

“I’m sure people think, ‘Golly, he’s been eating good.’ We thought it was called a lipoma. It’s just fat. It’s benign, thank God…it doesn’t affect me. I just looked like a linebacker circa 1982, thick neck, whatever. But it’s like my wife and I were walking out of the hospital when I had an MRI or something. And they had told us, ‘Man, great news is benign. But there’s really not anything we can do about it.’ So I was kind of bummed out walking out of the hospital because at the time we didn’t know it was cancer. We didn’t know what it was. And of course, your mind takes you to the worst possible places obviously.”

Although his appearance looks a bit different now, Lawrence admits he is just thankful that the diagnosis was not more serious.

“My wife looked at me, she goes, ‘If you just have a fat neck and you’re here for the next 50 years, then shut up and stop complaining.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ve never sold records because of my looks in the first place,” he added with a laugh.

Overall, the Arkansas native says he is “doing great” and also feels “great.”

“Situations like that really shine a light on what’s important in life. And I thought I knew that and I did, but I kind of lost sight of it. And so yeah, I’m in a really good spot right now and God willing, it’ll continue.

Justin Moore is officially back on the road, with shows scheduled all the way through November.

Brian Hickerson’s Family Home Receives Visit From Police Following Death of Hayden …

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been three days since the death of Hayden Panettiere, and new details about the actress’ final hours are still pouring in.

We now know Hayden was at an apartment complex with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, at the time of her death.

And with Panettiere’s death still under investigation, police have made a notable visit to a Hickerson family home.

Hayden Panettiere attends the premiere of "Klitschko" during the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival at SVA Theater on April 24, 2011 in New York City.

According to TMZ, the visit was part of a larger investigation to determine if criminal conduct may have played a role in Hayden’s passing.

Two Greenville Police Department vehicles reportedly arrived at the South Carolina residence of Hickerson’s grandmother, Betty Ellison, at approximately 8:20 a.m.

Witnesses say an officer knocked repeatedly on the front door while another attempted to access the home from the side. The officers left after roughly three minutes.

TMZ later reported that police returned about 90 minutes later to “conduct a welfare check.” A Greenville Police Department representative confirmed the visit but did not specify who the officers were checking on.

Hickerson’s brother, Zach, 38, was reportedly inside the home during the initial visit. Brian, 37, and Zach had both been seen at the property the previous day.

The residence is approximately five miles from the Greenville Airbnb where Panettiere was found unresponsive on Sunday, August 16.

The 36-year-old actress was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. after emergency responders attempted to revive her. Dispatch audio reportedly referenced a possible overdose and cardiac arrest, though an official cause of death has not been released.

An autopsy found “no signs of trauma” that would have contributed to Panettiere’s death. However, the investigation remains active while authorities await toxicology results.

Brian was reportedly at the Airbnb when Panettiere died. According to a police report, he was asleep in another room when Zach discovered the actress unresponsive in a chair.

Brian also reportedly showed officers a bag containing medications Panettiere had been taking.

The circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s final days have drawn increased scrutiny because of her complicated history with Hickerson. The pair dated on and off for years, and Hickerson was convicted of felony charges related to domestic violence against the actress in 2021.

Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, has also publicly criticized Hickerson’s role in her daughter’s life following the actress’ death.

For now, authorities have not publicly accused Hickerson or anyone else of wrongdoing in connection with Panettiere’s death.

But with the investigation ongoing and toxicology results still pending, there are clearly plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the tragedy.

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.
