Mykelti Brown: I Got in ‘Severe Trouble’ for Calling Meri Abusive!

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Did an allegation almost get Sister Wives canceled?

In the past, Mykelti Brown has put Meri on blast. But she has also minced her words more than some of her siblings have.

Now, she’s opening up about the backlash that she received from some of her own family.

It sounds like she was presented with a choice: walk back her accusation that Meri was “abusive,” or watch the family’s TLC paychecks disappear.

There’s one topic that she basically can’t safely discuss

During her recent appearance on The Sarah Fraser Show, Mykelti received an interesting question.

Which of her past videos proved to be the most incendiary with her family?

It was not a difficult question to answer.

A couple of years ago, she and her husband discussed Meri Brown in a Patreon video.

What did she say about Meri? Mykelti plead: “I can’t say the word because I’ll get flamed for it.”

“So I’m going to say it without saying it,” Mykelti announced. “At the beginning of our Patreon, I [said] a word that Meri did to us kids.”

She continued: “And because of that word, it caused a ton of backlash and a ton of negative stuff and we got in, like, severe trouble [with] family [and] other people.”

Mykelti recalled: “Like, it was like, ‘Don’t say that word, ‘cause the word can completely end the entire show, it could end all of our income, it could make investigations happen.”

She added: “Because that word in 2024 means something different than it did in 2009 [or] in the 2000s.”

Apparently, not so different. Because Sister Wives is still on, Meri is still a free woman and collecting TLC paychecks. The world — or, at least, the people who make decisions — don’t actually seem to care about children. Or about justice.

She’s talking about when she described Meri as abusive

Still without using the term, Mykelti said that she was admonished that she needed to use “a lot more context” when employing the term.

She could, conceivably, have needed to give an affidavit based upon her term. (But, again, seemingly no legal action actually manifested.)

“So that word, I said it once, and I explained it a tiny bit — but not enough,” Mykelti explained.

Even so, that was enough to get her scolded by some of her own family for simply describing her own childhood.

That is actually extremely common, even for families where no reality show exists, when someone accuses a parent or other relative of being abusive.

In January 2023, Mykelti described Meri as having been “abusive” towards her and to other children in the Brown family.

(Oddly, she would later claim that Meri’s alleged cruelty to her was in the form of emotional and verbal abuse, a statement that may have come after the family scolding — and which does not match up with what her siblings have said.)

In 2019, Maddie had made a series of tweets that implied the Meri was “abusive” and a “monster.”

Paedon Brown also accused Meri of abuse, echoing and supporting his siblings’ claims.

And while he and Gwendlyn don’t agree on much, she described Meri as “violent” and backed up the claim that Meri seemed to single out Mykelti in particular.

Fear of legal complications and economic suffering keeps a lot of people silent

In general, it’s legally safer for Mykelti to trash-talk Meri without getting specific.

You can talk about someone being an unpalatable disgrace with whom you’d never willingly interact without getting specific about their alleged actions.

But it’s also terrible that Mykelti clearly did not feel at liberty to openly discuss her own lived experiences growing up in her own family.

As we acknowledged, she is not alone. Countless children and adults find themselves treated as if they were the problem when they simply acknowledge how much a parent or other relative failed them — or worse.

Even without the apparent threat that Sister Wives money could dry up for everyone, this culture of silence is a generational curse that protects the worst people among us and forces victims to keep silent.

Men’s Player of the Year Ladder: Darius Acuff Jr. Makes Big Jump

If there was any doubt about the men’s college basketball Player of the Year race, Duke freshman standout Cameron Boozer erased it on Saturday. Boozer’s 18-point, 10-rebound, seven-assist performance against Michigan was the latest reminder that this race now has a clear front-runner. At this point, everyone else is battling for spots 2-10. Unfortunately, Texas Tech forward JT Toppin suffered a season-ending injury, which forces him off the ladder. That’s a tough break for college basketball. Here’s hoping for a smooth recovery and that we’re watching him on an NBA floor this time next year. Meanwhile, BYU freshman standout AJ Dybantsa continues to shine, holding firm in the No. 2 spot. And this week’s new kid on the block? St. John’s senior forward Zuby Ejiofor. Here’s how this week’s men’s Player of the Year Ladder shakes out. Honorable mention: Alabama guard Labaron Philon Jr., Gonzaga forward Graham Ike, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Texas Tech guard Christian Anderson, Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner 10. Zuby Ejiofor, St. John’s senior forward Ejiofor leads the surging Red Storm in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. He plays hard every night and is a versatile defender. I believe Ejiofor has locked up Big East Player of the Year honors already. 9. Keaton Wagler, Illinois freshman guard Illinois fans gasped when Wagler hit the ground against UCLA and immediately grabbed his left shoulder. The freshman guard left the court but did return as Illinois let UCLA come back and win in overtime. 8. Kingston Flemings, Houston freshman guard Flemings had a team-high 17 points in Houston’s loss to Arizona, but it took him 17 shots to get there. He is usually much more efficient from the floor, but he is the go-to guy for the Cougars in late-game situations. 7. Braden Smith, Purdue senior guard Smith was dealing with an illness last week at Iowa, and it showed up in his lack of offensive aggressiveness. His passing was still next level, though. Will Purdue win enough games in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament to allow Smith to become college basketball’s all-time assist leader? 6. Jeremy Fears Jr., Michigan State sophomore guard Tell me this: How many players could put up 26 points and 15 assists against Illinois and 17 points and 17 assists vs. Maryland? The answer is one. Jeremy Fears Jr. 5. Yaxel Lendeborg, Michigan senior forward I was looking forward to the matchup between Lendeborg and Duke’s Cameron Boozer, and while the battle delivered, it also made one thing clear: Boozer operates on a different level. Lendeborg did finish with 21 points and seven rebounds. 4. Joshua Jefferson, Iowa State senior forward Jefferson still remains No. 2 in KenPom’s player rankings. He is the offensive engine that drives Iowa State, but he isn’t as dynamic a scorer as some of the other names on this list. 3. Darius Acuff Jr., Arkansas freshman guard Acuff dropped 49 points on the road against Alabama last week. It was the perfect environment for him — an up-tempo game against a defense that struggled to get stops. New rule: If anyone on this list drops 49 in a game, they’re moving up at least one spot. 2. AJ Dybantsa, BYU freshman forward Dybantsa continues his incredible February, averaging just under 30 points per game this month. He outdueled Joshua Jefferson in Saturday’s marquee matchup, finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists in a win over Iowa State. 1. Cameron Boozer, Duke freshman forward No one is asked to do more for his team than Boozer, and he delivers almost every time. He had plenty of help in Saturday’s win over Michigan, but his 18-point, 10-rebound, seven-assist, two-block performance was the catalyst.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports

Akon’s ‘Lonely’ Joins The Spotify Billions Club

Akon Trouble

“Lonely” is Akon’s newest entry in the Spotify Billions Club. The Senegalese-American singer’s 2005 smash has surpassed 1one billion streams on Spotify, the world’s leading streaming platform. It’s Akon’s third song to join the Billions Club—and his first solo track—following his collabs with David Guetta and Eminem, “Sexy Bitch” and “Smack That.”

Appearing on Akon’s 2004 debut album Trouble, “Lonely” was released as a single in February 2005, becoming his breakthrough hit. Akon co-produced it with Benny-D, Knobody, Shakim Williams, and Disco D, building it out of a sample from crooner Bobby Vinton’s 1964 chart-topper “Mr. Lonely.”

Akon’s song pitched up the sample of Vinton’s voice a la Alvin and the Chipmunks, a style that gained traction in the mid-2000s thanks to producers like Kanye West and Just Blaze. The idea to flip “Mr. Lonely,” though, was Akon’s alone; only Akon and “Mr. Lonely” writers Vinton and Gene Allan are credited as songwriters on “Lonely.”

Not only was “Lonely” the song that made Akon a fixture of 2000s pop music, it’s the song that first caught the attention of SRC Records A&R rep Jerome Foster, aka the song’s co-producer Knowbody, earning Akon his record deal with the Universal imprint. In a 2005 Hit Quarters interview, Foster said he immediately flew to Atlanta to meet Akon upon hearing the “Lonely” demo.

“I was extremely lonely when I wrote it – true story,” Akon told NME in 2023. “At the time, the only person who had my back was no longer there for me because of mishaps and decisions of my own. But for me, writing a song like this is a form of therapy. Once I get it out, I feel so much better. I feel even better again when I see other people can relate to it too.” Clearly, people are still relating to it more than two decades later.
