A tech group is launching a new effort to keep Democrats from falling behind on AI

Voters are already asking artificial intelligence chatbots about candidates, but campaigns don’t yet know what those large language models might say about them or how to shape those answers — one of many AI-fueled campaign challenges a new Democratic-aligned tech group is hoping to solve.

Tech for Campaigns, a political nonprofit focused on helping Democrats adopt better data and digital marketing techniques, is launching a new initiative called The Lab, aiming to conduct experiments on how Democrats can use AI to win. The group says it is prepared to spend millions partnering with Democratic outside groups in key states and battleground races, with the hopes of helping the party make progress in an area they say it has so far neglected.

“Democrats have shown … they’re not willing to try new things. They wait too long and often are at a disadvantage,” said Jessica Alter, board chair at Tech for Campaigns. “With how fast AI is moving, that disadvantage will compound and be very dangerous.”

Campaigns across the political spectrum are grappling with how to take advantage of the rapidly evolving technology. Major Republican groups have embraced AI-generated content for ads more than their Democratic counterparts in the past year, although some Democratic campaigns have used AI imagery. AI-generated ads tend to be less expensive for campaigns, but strategists are still figuring out how voters feel about them — Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s Senate campaign came under fire this week amid online accusations that her latest ad featured an AI-generated crowd image, although her campaign said it “was created through hundreds of hours of real craft and collaboration between creatives and union labor” without commenting on whether AI was also used.

And ads are just one piece of the AI campaign blitz. Groups have rolled out AI initiatives on everything from writing fundraising emails to searching for opposition research.

Tech for Campaigns wants to go beyond those uses. Its plan is to partner with outside groups in key races to fund experiments on different uses of AI. Modeled after a Silicon Valley-style startup accelerator, the group plans to pair campaign groups with tech executives and commercial experts from companies including Netflix and Y Combinator..

Each experiment is expected to take between two weeks and two months and cost between $50,000 and $150,000. Tech for Campaigns is inviting organizations to apply, and is hoping to conduct around 20 experiments this year. The results will be shared among Democrats widely, with the goal of more campaigns replicating tactics that work and avoiding those that don’t.

Among the challenges the group hopes to tackle: Shaping how candidates show up in output from large language models such as ChatGPT, a practice known as answer engine optimization. Outside researchers have found that AI chatbots can be effective at political persuasion, with voters shifting their opinions on candidates or issues after a short conversation.

Alter said campaigns need to ensure they are well-represented in chatbot results about them, lest the chatbot basing their response more on an opponent’s research and messaging. While major companies are prioritizing shaping chatbots’ response, she said, campaigns so far have been more hesitant to work on it.

The group also hopes to study whether AI tools can help with personalized communication and how Democrats can make better use of platforms, such as Reddit, where the party has generally had less of a presence.

Alter said Republicans have shown an advantage in recent years when it comes to adopting new technologies, from year-round digital advertising to podcasts. The new initiative aims to make sure that GOP advantage does not extend to AI too.

“It’s the most powerful technological advancement of our time,” Alter said. “So I don’t think they’re gonna eschew it.”

Nicole Curtis Drops Racial Slur on Set; HGTV Cancels Rehab Addict in Response

Reading Time: 3 minutes

HGTV is done with Rehab Addict.

In every way possible.

On Wednesday, the cable network announced it was canceling the home renovation series after video surfaced of star Nicole Curtis using a racial slur while filming on set.

Moreover, executives have also decided to take down ALL past episodes from streaming platforms HBO Max and Discovery+.

(HGTV)

“HGTV was recently made aware of an offensive racial comment made during the filming of Rehab Addict. Not only is language like this hurtful and disappointing to our viewers, partners, and employees – it does not align with the values of HGTV,” the network said in a statement last night.

“Accordingly, we have removed the series from all HGTV platforms. We remain dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and inclusion across our content and our workplace.”

The decision came just hours after a video of Curtis using the N-word while shooting the show was posted by Radar Online. This was, ironically, the same day the series was set to return to television.

The footage features Curtis immediately realizing what she said and asking to “kill” the moment, which ultimately made its way online.

Curtis has since apologized for the racial slur in a statement to celebrity gossip website TMZ, saying:

“I want to be clear: the word in question is wrong and not part of my vocabulary and never has been, and I apologize to everyone.

“I’m grateful for the 15-year journey we’ve shared. It’s been a meaningful chapter, but my focus isn’t on my career. My focus, at this moment is rightfully on my relationships, and my community — the people who truly know my character and where my heart is.”

Rehab Addict premiered in 2010 on the DIY Network before moving to HGTV with Season 4 in 2014.

The program centered on Curtis advocating for the preservation and restoration of existing architecture as opposed to demolition.

Curtis also posted a portion of her text conversation with HGTV on her Instagram Stories, explaining:

“There is more to this, but my family comes first and I need to be mom right now more than anything else.

“I will take the time to be as I’ve always been with you, transparent and honest. TMZ called me as I had just turned my phone on after being at school- I said this briefly- but there is more.”

It’s been a roller coaster ride of late for Rehab Addict.

The series aired Season 9 in June 2025, with Curtis saying at the time that the reason for its previous hiatus was that she “had a setback in my life that just rocked me to the core, and it was one of those moments where I thought, how do I get through this one?”

The show subsequently aired two episodes before Curtis announced in July 2025 that she “made the executive decision to shelf the rest of our new shows until Fall.”

After teasing a possible return in January, an Instagram post shared jointly by HGTV and Curtis earlier this month announced new episodes of Rehab Addict would air on Wednesday, February 11.

Alas, not anymore. Not ever again.

Gene Simmons Blasts Rock & Roll Hall of Fame For Celebrating Hip Hop: ‘I …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There are boomer takes, and then there’s whatever Gene Simmons is babbling about in his latest interview.

The KISS frontman — who, these days, is better known for his crotchety attitude than for his music — is lashing out yet again.

And this time, he’s participating in the bigoted tradition of explaining why hip hop is bad.

During a recent appearance on the “LegendsNLeaders” podcast, Simmons fumed over the fact that hip hop acts can be inducted inton Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“It’s not my music,” said Simmons, adding:

“I don’t come from the ghetto. It doesn’t speak my language. And as I said in print many times, hip-hop does not belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, nor does opera or symphony orchestras.

“How come the New York Philharmonic doesn’t get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?”

From there, Simmons seethed over the fact that rappers have been honored by the Hall, while metal band Iron Maiden has yet to be inducted.

“Iron Maiden is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they can sell out stadiums,” he said.

Apparently, Gene — who recently blasted his late bandmate Ace Frehley, blaming him for his own death — believes that every band that sells out a stadium deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame.

“Ice Cube and I had a back and forth,” Simmons continued.

“He shot back that it’s the ‘spirit’ of rock and roll … I just want to know when Led Zeppelin’s going to be in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame?

“Music has labels because it describes an approach. By and large, rap, hip-hop is a spoken-word art,” he continued.

“Then you put beats in back of it and somebody comes up with a musical phrase, but it’s verbal. There are some melodies, but by and large, it’s a verbal thing.”

This is not the first time that Simmons has expressed his disdain for hip hop.

In a 2015 Rolling Stone interview, he said he was eagerly awaiting the “death of rap.”

When NWA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, MC Ren told Simmons, “hip-hop is here forever — get used to it.”

Hopefully, Simmons won’t waste any more energy on the hip hop issue.

His time would be better spent on figuring out why even his colleagues in the rock realm have little respect for KISS.
