CBJ, Tlingit & Haida, USFS align on ‘Lake Tap’ as an enduring solution for glacial lake outburst flooding

CBJ- Representatives from the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ), Tlingit & Haida (T&H), and the USDA Forest Service (USFS) this week joined the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) and technical experts from relevant agencies to review and evaluate enduring flood-control alternatives for the Glacial Lake Outburst Flooding in the Mendenhall Valley.

Following three days of technical analysis of the safety, feasibility, constructability, cost and timeline of the five proposed alternatives, T&H, CBJ and USFS united on their shared support for the Lake Tap alternative.

All three agencies encourage USACE to move forward with this option as the focus of the Technical Report.“From the perspective of safety and protection of the community, construction timeline and impact to the area, a lake tap option quickly rose to the top as an enduring solution,” explains Denise Koch, CBJ Director of Engineering & Public Works. “We greatly appreciate the recognition of urgency by the USACE and the contributions of the dozens of technical experts convened to tackle this ongoing threat to our community on accelerated timeline.”

The five alternatives reviewed over the three-day charrette included flood-control dam(s), levees or floodwalls, Suicide Basin lake tap, relocation, and a hybrid option. Experts from USACE and their partners presented a high level of technical data and risk analysis; however, there was wide acknowledgement that future geotechnical studies would be central to the implementation of any solution. Participants also reviewed the public input provided via the 30-day public comment period in November 2025.

“Tlingit & Haida went into this week with the purpose of reviewing all options with a single priority: identify an approach that best safeguards citizens, protects cultural resources, and supports the wellbeing of the broader Juneau community,” said Tlingit & Haida Public Safety Manager Sabrina Grubritz. “The lake tap option appears to best meet those goals with the data currently available.”

Tlingit & Haida and CBJ are the community partners for this critical USACE report. As the impacted land manager, the USFS will also play important role in an enduring solution.

The purpose of the charrette was to determine the focus for the USACE technical report, which will inform the next steps in pursuing an enduring solution to the annual glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF) events in the Mendenhall Valley. USACE plans to release the technical report in May 2026, with a public comment period to follow. While the completion of a technical report is an important step, it does not guarantee funding for a project construction.  CBJ, Tlingit & Haida and USFS are committed to their joint pursuit of a completed solution as quickly as possible.

“Time is of the essence,” emphasized Koch. “It is going to take close collaboration across government agencies at all levels to get us to an enduring solution. We truly value our strong partnership with Tlingit & Haida, the U.S. Forest Service and USACE, as well as the ongoing advocacy and involvement of our residents and representatives.”

Information regarding the USACE Mendenhall Glacial Lake Outburst Flooding Technical Report is available at the project website.

Tate McRae Pregnant: The Rumor & The Truth

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Is Tate McRae pregnant?

The young adult singer has made waves over the past several years, especially on streaming.

She’s gorgeous, she’s talented, and she’s popular. But is she pregnant?

Here’s who’s what people are saying, why, and the truth.

Who is Tate McRae?

In 2016, singer Tate McRae first garnered attention on So You Think You Can Dance.

That was a big deal — especially considering that she was only about 13 at the time.

Her 2020 and 2021 EPs, All The Things I Never Said and Too Young To Be Sad (respectively) made a more substantial splash, with the latter being a hit on music streaming.

Tate continues to be a hot topic on Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms.

In fact, social media is where you’ll find the most chatter about Tate McRae being pregnant.

Who is she dating?

Back in January 2024, people first spotted signs of Tate McRae dating The Kid LAROI.

The two were partying together. People in public spotted them on a date. Tate even shared a cute selfie in which she appeared to be wearing his shirt.

Things became increasingly public until April of that year, when The Kid LAROI referred to her as his “girlfriend.”

Their dating life escalated over the summer, including a couple’s vacation in August. This was something that they repeated in January 2025. They would go on to collaborate professionally.

During all of this, pregnancy rumors about Tate McRae emerged on social media. Some were more serious than others. Even so, by summer 2025, the couple had split.

Who’s talking about Tate McRae being pregnant?

If you simply search “Tate McRae pregnant” on most social media, you’re going to get memes — punctuated by the occasional horny post.

The memes are when people joke about other pop stars having been “pregnant” with Tate during some performance or another. (People use this meme about absolutely anyone, and neither timelines nor biology are deterrents).

As for the horny posts, well, there are a bunch of people publicly wishing that Tate would “get them pregnant.” Tate is a cisgender woman, but biology needn’t apply here, either.

Beyond that, however, you have TikTok.

And TikTok is where you see Tate McRae’s name alongside baby bump after baby bump.

What is this trend all about?

Why are people linking Tate McRae with being pregnant? It isn’t because the singer herself is pregnant.

(To be clear, she is not)

Instead, it’s because they’re playing her music while showing off their own pregnant bodies.

Yes, many Tate fans are old enough to become parents, and some are engaging in a trend where they play her music while posing, dancing, or flexing with their baby bumps visible.

Unlike some TikTok trends, this one doesn’t seem to have one set song. Any Tate song will do, it seems.

So, is Tate McRae pregnant?

There is no evidence at this time of Tae McRae being pregnant.

In fact, all of her most recent photos seem to indicate someone who could not be very far into a pregnancy if she were pregnant at all.

Instead, people who are actually pregnant simply seem to be enjoying her music. As they should!

The internet has plenty of RPF fanfiction about Tate and pregnancy. And, as we mentioned, there are horny social media users who express their thirst in biologically improbable ways.

So if you’re hearing that Tate is pregnant, all of this is likely why. It isn’t that anyone’s conspiring to trick you — it’s just that the internet’s one huge game of telephone.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We have sad news to report out of Hollywood today.

Peter Greene — the actor who was best known for playing Hollywood villains in several classic films — has passed away.

He was just 60 years old.

Peter Greene’s agent confirms news of his death

Greene’s remains were found in his apartment on the Lower East Side.

Police reportedly performed a welfare check after neighbors reported that music had been playing in his apartment for over 24 hours.

News of his passing comes courtesy of Greene’s agent, Gregg Edwards, who confirmed the actor’s death in a statement to NBC News.

“Nobody played a bad guy better than Peter,” Edwards told the outlet.

“But he also had, you know, a gentle side that most people never saw, and a heart as big as gold.”

Edwards did not provide any details regarding Greene’s cause of death. We will provide further updates in that regard as new information becomes available.

Over the course of his decades in the industry, Greene appeared in nearly 100 films and TV shows.

He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Zed, one of the rapist hillbillies in Pulp Fiction.

He also played the sinister club owner Dorian Tyrell in the 1994 Jim Carrey comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Greene also appeared in a number of popular TV series, including For Life, Chicago PD, Hawaii Five-O, Justified, and Life on Mars.

On the acclaimed but short-lived NBC drama The Black Donnellys, Greene had a recurring role as Derek “Dokey” Farrell.

Though best known as a character actor, Greene also had several leading man roles, including his powerhouse performance as a schizophrenic murder suspect in the 1993 film Clean, Shaven.

Our thoughts go out to Peter Greene’s friends and family as they continue to mourn his loss.

Democrats gather in California feeling sunny once again

As Democratic Party leaders gathered in Los Angeles for their annual winter meetings this week, for the first time in a long time the mood was warm.

Optimism coursed through the hotel ballrooms, following a string of double-digit wins in off-year elections last month. Democratic National Committee members flocked to California Gov. Gavin Newsom — a likely presidential contender — for selfies and major donors are resurfacing after a period of hibernation. Conan O’Brien, Jane Fonda and Shonda Rhimes joined Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for a major donor gathering, according to an invitation obtained by POLITICO. And Nebraska and Utah officials are among those expressing interest in hosting the party’s novel midterm mini-convention next year, according to three people briefed on the conversations.

“The party, broadly, is just feeling like they got their sea legs back,” Newsom told reporters in Los Angeles. “And they’re winning and winning solves a lot of problems.”

DNC Chair Ken Martin nodded to the vibe shift in his own remarks Friday: “I can tell you, it’s a much different feel in this room than a few months ago,” he said.

But for all the energy at the DNC’s winter meeting, Democrats are still confronting challenges. The committee’s finances are shaky at best, badly trailing their Republican counterparts. The committee has yet to release its 2024 autopsy in full, as Democrats continue to argue over why the party lost so resoundingly last year. A proxy battle looms over the presidential primary calendar, as several states continue to lobby DNC members on the sidelines of this week’s meetings.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris was warmly received when she addressed the convention Friday night, but her return to the national stage, fresh off a controversial book release, is also a reminder of the party’s fractured response to its sweeping losses in 2024, when Donald Trump defeated her in every swing state on his way to becoming president.

On Friday, Harris gave DNC members a reality check by delivering her most expansive diagnosis yet of what she sees as the country’s broken political system. “We must be honest that for so many, the American dream has become more of a myth than reality,” she said.

Most pressingly, the DNC faces serious financial problems. In October, it took out a $15 million loan, framed by the party as a financing investment into the New Jersey and Virginia elections that Democrats ended up dominating. While not unprecedented, it was a larger sum of money earlier in the cycle than is typical. The committee’s loan also brings the Republicans’ cash advantage into sharp relief — the Republican National Committee has $88 million more in the bank when accounting for the debt, according to November’s Federal Elections Commission filings.

And some party members still want answers from the committee’s self-diagnosis for what went wrong in 2024.

The DNC still hasn’t released its long promised post-election report, after earlier saying it wouldn’t come before last November’s elections. They have so far only shared initial findings with top Democrats at the committee’s national finance meeting in October. The preliminary findings, which a DNC aide insisted at the time were incomplete, criticized Democrats for not investing resources early enough, while ignoring discussion of former President Joe Biden’s age. But some DNC members are looking for more answers.

“It’s very hard for an organization to self criticize, so you need to keep the pressure up to make them do it,” said Eric Croft, the chair of the Alaska Democratic Party. “They said they’d do it. We’re going to make sure that they do.”

But things of late are looking much rosier. Democrats are cheered by their double-digit victories in New Jersey and Virginia governor’s races last month, as well as a slew of other off-year and special elections in which their candidates outperformed their 2024 margins. They even denied the GOP its supermajority in the Mississippi state senate. Public polling suggests the wind is at their backs in the 2026 midterms.

DNC members estimated the electoral momentum will help with fundraising.

“People are ready to open their wallets up now that they’ve realized what they’ve voted for,” said Manny Crespin, Jr., a committee member from New Mexico. “Now that they’ve realized it’s actually affecting their pocketbook, they’re going to do everything they can to reverse that.”

One of the biggest decisions ahead for the DNC will play out in a little-known yet powerful panel, the Rules and Bylaws Committee, which is charged with setting the 2028 presidential primary calendar. States have until Jan. 16 to apply to be in the early window, but the behind-the-scenes jockeying for a spot has continued, several DNC members said privately.

“All of the early states are trying to lay their groundwork to get the committee to back them,” said a Democratic operative who attended the DNC meeting. “There’s a bit of a proxy war brewing on this.”
