Mitchell Tenpenny Serves Up Brutal Honesty and Zero Regret in New Breakup Anthem, ‘Therapy’

Mitchell Tenpenny adding to his collection of signature breakup anthems with “Therapy,” but this time, he’s showing no remorse for the person who did him wrong. He balances bitterness with the brutal truth while releasing some pent-up frustration over an ex that somehow feels healing at the same time.

Penned by Tenpenny with Andy Albert, Chris DeStefano and Thomas Archer, the song offers a hard-hitting modern country sound that packs an emotional punch as the country star declares he’s refusing to take the high road. Instead, he wishes that his ex would experience some much-deserved karma in the form of sleepless nights, guilt and so much regret that they’re forced to go to therapy to deal with the pain.

He sings “Hope you end up in therapy over me/ Your session every other week isn’t cheap/ Hoping that you never sleep, barely eat/ Yeah, cuz it messed you up so bad/ The cheating and the lies/ Are eating you alive/ When you see the other side of leaving me/ So go on act like we were nothing/ I keep hoping you end up in/ Therapy, over me/ Therapy, over me.”

Today’s release arrived with a hilarious new music video set in a corporate office, where Mitchell Tenpenny portrays the role of an annoying executive assistant that his coworker just can’t escape no matter how hard he tries. As the Ty Combs-directed video unfolds, the employee starts to spiral, questioning his sanity as Tenpenny keeps popping up out of nowhere. He’s there one second, gone the next, but always somehow is lurking.

The Tennessee native opened up about the inspiration behind “Therapy,” making it clear that the story isn’t aimed at anyone in particular and instead is supposed to act as a way for anyone who’s been done wrong to get some frustration out.

“My song ‘Therapy’ is not really about anyone specific, but more of a lighthearted, bitter song when somebody just does you wrong. You just want to have that anthem to scream out to make yourself feel better as you’re driving through the day. Just have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously, and I hope it helps you,” he shared.

“Therapy” comes just a few days after Tenpenny wrapped up his time on the road for Jordan Davis’ Ain’t Enough Road Tour. The trek came to a close following a show in Estero, FL on October 25.

To commemorate their time on the road together, the “We Got History” singer shared a carousel of photos captured throughout the run. He paired that with a heartfelt message addressed to Davis.

Mitchell Tenpenny poured his heart out in a message to his tourmate and longtime friend, Jordan Davis, sharing just how much it meant to him to be part of the run. He also expressed how much pride he feels watching Davis’ success in his life and career.

He began, “@jordandavisofficial I love you like a brother! We have so many memories playing music together. Proud of the Artist, Man, Father, Husband and Friend you are. You deserve all the good coming your way because you have earned it! I love your band and team like a family and playing shows with yall has been the highlight of my touring career. Bittersweet ending to another tour but lifelong memories have been made together.”

Davis commented saying, “Love you brother… You’re an absolute legend. Not the last time.. let’s run it back😤”

At the end of the note, he also directed a few words towards his fellow openers on the trek, Vincent Mason and Mackenzie Carpenter, in which he expressed a job-well-done and wished them well on their next endeavors.

“Cheers to @vincentmason and @mackcarpmusic for being so badass every night. The future of country music is here! On to the next chapter. Thank you to everyone who came out to a show and thank you Jordan for helping me write this story. I love you man.”

Mitchell Tenpenny still has a few more performances on his calendar before closing out the year. Beginning in April, he would join HARDY on his THE COUNTRY! COUNTRY! TOUR!
