McCarthyism’s shadow looms over controversial firing of Texas professor who taught about gender identity

A Texas A&M free speech case raises questions about academic freedom that have featured before in American society and courts, including during the 1950s. Westend61

Texas A&M University announced the resignation of its president, Mark A. Welsh III, on Sept. 18, 2025, following a controversial decision earlier in the month to fire a professor over a classroom exchange with a student about gender identity.

The university – a public school in College Station, Texas – fired Melissa McCoul, a children’s literature professor, on Sept. 9. McCoul’s dismissal happened after a student secretly filmed video as the professor taught a class and discussed a children’s book that includes the image of a purple “gender unicorn,” a cartoon image that is sometimes used to teach about gender identity.

The student questioned whether it was “legal” to be teaching about gender identity, given President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order – which is not legally binding – that said there are only two genders, male and female.

The video went viral, triggering backlash from Republican lawmakers who called for McCoul to be fired and praised the fact that the school also demoted the College of Arts and Science’s dean and revoked administrative duties from a department head.

Texas A&M officials have said that McCoul was fired because her course content was not consistent with the published course description. McCoul is appealing her firing and is considering legal action against the school.

Academic freedom advocates have condemned McCoul’s firing and say it raises questions about whether professors should be fired for addressing politically charged topics.

As a history educator researching curriculum design, civics education and generational dynamics, I study how classroom discussions often mirror larger cultural and political conflicts.

The Texas A&M case is far from unprecedented. The Cold War offers an example of another politically contentious time in American history when people questioned if and how politics should influence what gets taught in the classroom – and tried to restrict what teachers say.

Educators under suspicion in the McCarthy era

During the Cold War – a period of geopolitical tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that came after World War II and lasted until 1991 – fears of communist infiltration spread widely across American society, including the country’s schools.

One particularly contentious period was in the late 1940s and 1950s, during what is often referred to as the McCarthy era. The era is named after Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy, a Republican who led the charge on accusing government employees and others – often without evidence – of being communists.

Beginning in the late 1940s, local school boards, state legislatures and Congress launched investigations into teachers and professors across the country accused of harboring communist sympathies. This often led to the teachers being blacklisted and fired.

More than 20 states passed loyalty oath laws requiring public employees, including educators, to swear that they were not members of the Communist Party or affiliated groups.

In California, for example, the 1950 Levering Act mandated a loyalty oath for all state employees, including professors at public universities. Some employees refused to sign the oath, and 31 University of California professors were fired.

And in New York, the Feinberg Law, approved in 1949, authorized school districts to fire teachers who were members of “subversive organizations.” More than 250 educators were fired or forced to resign under the Feinberg Law and related anti-subversion policies between 1948 and 1953.

These laws had a chilling impact on academic life and learning.

Faculty, including those who were not under investigation, and students alike avoided discussing controversial topics, such as labor organizing and civil rights, in the classroom.

This pervasive climate of censorship also made it challenging for educators to fully engage students in critical, meaningful learning.

The Supreme Court steps in

By the mid-1950s, questions about the constitutionality of these laws – and the extent of professors’ academic freedom and First Amendment right to freedom of speech – reached the Supreme Court.

In one such case, 1957’s Sweezy v. New Hampshire, Louis C. Weyman, the New Hampshire attorney general, questioned Paul Sweezy, a Marxist economist, about the content of a university lecture he delivered at the University of New Hampshire.

Weyman wanted to determine whether Sweezy had advocated for Marxism or said that socialism was inevitable in the country. Sweezy refused to answer Weyman’s questions, citing his constitutional rights. The Supreme Court ruled in Sweezy’s favor, emphasizing the importance of academic freedom and the constitutional limits on state interference in university teaching.

The Supreme Court also considered another case, Keyishian v. Board of Regents, in 1967. With the Cold War still ongoing, this case challenged New York’s Feinberg Law, which required educators to disavow membership in communist organizations.

In striking down the law, the court declared that academic freedom is “a special concern of the First Amendment.” The ruling emphasized that vague or broad restrictions on what teachers can say or believe create an unconstitutional, “chilling effect” on the classroom.

While these cases did not remove all political pressures on what teachers could discuss in class, they set significant constitutional limits on state efforts to regulate classroom speech, particularly at public institutions.

Recurring tensions from now and then

There are several important differences between the McCarthy era and current times.

For starters, conservative concern centered primarily on the spread of communism during the McCarthy era. Today, debates often involve conservative critiques of how topics such as gender identity, race and other cultural issues — sometimes grouped under the term “woke” — are addressed in schools and society.

Second, in the 1950s and ‘60s, external pressures on academic freedom often came in the form of legal mandates.

Today, the political landscape in academia is more complex and fast-paced, with pressures emanating from both the public and federal government.

Viral outrage, administrative investigations and threats to cut state or federal funding to schools can all contribute to an intensifying climate of fear of retribution that constrains educators’ ability to teach freely.

Despite these differences, the underlying dynamic between the two time periods is similar – in both cases, political polarization intensifies public scrutiny of educators.

Like loyalty oaths in the 1950s, today’s political controversies create a climate in which many teachers feel pressure to avoid contentious topics altogether. Even when no laws are passed, the possibility of complaints, investigations or firings can shape classroom choices.

Just as Sweezy and Keyishian defined the boundaries of state power in the 1950s and ‘60s, potential legal challenges like the appeal from the fired Texas A&M professor may eventually lead to court rulings that clarify how people’s First Amendment protections apply in today’s disputes over curriculum and teaching.

Whether these foundational protections will endure under the Supreme Court’s current and future makeup remains an open question.

Keith Urban Girlfriend? Singer Already Dating in Wake of Nicole Kidman Divorce

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Keith Urban has allegedly moved on from Nicole Kidman.

Yes, already.

Just hours after we first learned that Kidman and Urban were splitting up after 19 years of marriage (the actress officially filed for divorce on September 30), TMZ is reporting that the singer has found a girlfriend.

The website would like to make one thing clear, however…

It’s unclear whether Urban was involved with this individual while actively working on his marriage to Kidman; they could very well have hooked after the pair separated.

This is possible because E! News previously quoted an insider who said Urban and Kidman had been living apart “since the beginning of summer.”

In the case of this mysterious new girlfriend, TMZ simply writes that “sources connected to Kidman say “all the signs point to the fact Keith is with another woman. Let’s just say, Nicole doesn’t dispute that, but she’s still shocked over it.”

Well, sure.

The celebrities had been married since 2006 and share two kids.

Based on what we’ve been able to gather thus far, Kidman fought hard to try and save her relationship.

However, TMZ reports that Urban has rented his own home in Nashville and has shown no signs of wanting a reconciliation.

“Nicole’s sister [Antonia] has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” a source told People Magazine on Tuesday.

Kidman and Urban didn’t talk too often about their romance with the press, but the former said just last year that she was “so lucky that I have Keith who’s just my love, my deep, deep love” when sitting down with People.

News of their split came months after Kidman attended the Met Gala by herself in May.

She and Urban were last spotted out in public at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 game in Nashville on June 20, an outing that came just five days before their 19th wedding anniversary.

“Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban,” the veteran star captioned a photo of her snuggling up with Urban as he held a guitar.

We wish both halves of this now-former couple nothing but the best moving forward.

Amber Portwood Boasts She ‘Paved Way’ for ‘Teen Mom’ in Latest …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Amber Portwood wants recognition for paving the way for the Teen Mom franchise.

The former reality TV villain has turned to some of the worst social media apps for attention after walking away from the MTV series.

She seems to be fond of presenting herself as a perpetual victim while simultaneously extolling her own praises, even when her account of things doesn’t seem to match reality.

Now, she’s taking credit for the Teen Mom franchise, at least in part. She’s also, despite everything, saying that she has no regrets.

Amber Portwood will always be her own #1 fan

As is too often her habit, Amber Portwood spent an alarming amount of time on TikTok over this past weekend.

(If there is anyone remaining in her life who loves and cares about her, they should encourage her to stop)

As you can see in the clip below, she went on TikTok Live to directly, well, fight with commenters.

Amber Portwood holds a drink cup in her kitchen.

Amber at one point insisted that social media followings do not impress her.

She turned around and boasted that she accrued more than “5 million” just from being on Teen Mom.

Amber then bragged that she “paved the way” for that show to exist.

It’s unclear if she’s trying to say that she helped put it on the map or something else.

She has ‘paved the way’ and also ‘made waves’

That’s hard! You don’t know what hard is,” Amber Portwood seemed to yell at a TikTok commenter.

“Don’t come for somebody who’s already paved the way and made waves!” she shouted.

“Began it and ended s–t.”

Amber ranted, insisting: “Don’t come at that person out of anybody, don’t come at that person!”

Amber Portwood sits and expresses regrets.

“I promise you, they’re going to know more people, know more than you, be more wise about things,” Amber boldly insisted.

“And,” she insisted, “have way more experiences than you could ever understand!”

Amber declared, this time not inaccurately: “It’s another beast to be in the entertainment industry for 20 f–king years than here on TikTok.”

NO regrets? Really?

Still riding some sort of emotional high, Amber Portwood sang her own praises and insists that she regrets nothing. Not even her own regrettable actions.

“Everything that I went through, no, I do not have any regrets,” she proclaimed.

“Why? Because of the people I helped.”

She rambled: “Done. Like, it’s just done. I’m gonna keep doing what I’m doing, which is a beautiful thing today.”

Obviously, a string of nonsensical statements full of self-aggrandizement sounds a lot like a mental health episode.

This is not the first time that she has sounded delusional.

But though Amber is very openly mentally ill, we should be careful to acknowledge that this might just be Amber talking.

You don’t need a mental health crisis or a manic phase to rewrite history. Or to snap at your own alleged “fans.”

Erika Kirk: ‘Witch’ Who ‘Cursed’ Charlie Kirk Ahead of Shooting …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

One of the more bizarre stories to emerge from the murder of Charlien Kirk had to do with a media stunt that turned out to be very poorly timed.

Just days before the shooting, the news and culture site Jezebel ran a humor piece in which the author described the process of paying a witch from Etsy to put a curse on Kirk.

No actual harm was intended by the writer, who appears to hold the standard belief that witchcraft is not “real” in any material sense.

But it seems that one of the witches involved feels responsible for causing undue “distress.”

Erika Kirk wipes away tears during the memorial service for her husband, political activist Charlie Kirk at State Farm Stadium on September 21, 2025 in Glendale, Arizona. Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10th while speaking at an event during his "American Comeback Tour" at Utah Valley University.

Priestess Lilin issues apology to Erika Kirk

One of the supernatural practitioners who was contacted for the “We Paid Some Etsy Witches to Curse Charlie Kirk” article has spoken with the Daily Mail and asked for a “private conversation” with Charlie’s widow, Erika Kirk.

“We regret any distress experienced. What we do is done based on an impartial perspective and at a professional level,” the witch, who goes by the name Priestess Lilin, told the outlet.

“We respect the widow’s feelings and welcome a private conversation to address her concerns,” she added.

According to the priestess, the curse was spiritual in nature and was never intended to cause any physical harm.

“Our spells are spiritual in nature and we do not perform actions that are intended to cause physical harm,” she explained.

The debate over Charlie Kirk’s legacy continues

Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric made him a divisive figure in life, as many recognized his most inflammatory content as the sort of speech that has historically led to violence.

He’s remained divisive in death, with rightwing politicians declaring him a free speech martyr, and figures on the Left pointing out that Kirk was a professional provocateur and a gun rights absolutist who believed that deadly force is a necessary evil in America.

It’s important to note that no sane person on either end of the political spectrum is celebrating Kirk’s death, and obviously, Priestess Lilin wants to make clear that she never wished violence on anyone.

As the discourse regarding Kirk’s life and legacy continues, it would be beneficial for both sides to bear in mind that his belief in the importance of free speech was one of Charlie’s most deeply held principles.

In other words, he probably wouldn’t be a fan of comedians being canceled in his name or anyone receiving death threats because of their words.

As we enter the final months of 2025, hopefully, the nation can come together on core beliefs such as: no one should be killed for their words, and no one’s words should encourage violence.

Nicole Kidman-Keith Urban Divorce Details Revealed: Nicole Wants the Kids 10 Months Out …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Few celebrity breakups have been as shocking as the Nicole Kidman-Keith Urban split.

It’s not just that the beloved stars are unexpectedly calling it quits after 19 years of marriage; it’s also the messy fashion in which this is all playing out.

Insiders say Urban already has a girlfriend, and based on Nicole’s divorce filing, this is not an amicable breakup!

Nicole Kidman files for divorce, demands primary custody of children

Yes, according to a new report from TMZ, Nicole has already filed to legally end the marriage, and she’s made some shocking demands in her Marital Dissolution Agreement.

Under the arrangement proposed by Nicole, the exes’ two daughters will spend 306 days of the year with her and just 59 days with Keith.

Yes, Nicole has clearly given this a lot of thought, and she couldn’t be more precise in her demands.

She gave the vague “irreconcilable differences” reason for the divorce (a favorite among celebs who wish to retain a shred of privacy), and she’s stated that she intends to remain the “primary residential parent of the minor children.”

All major decisions involving their kids — including those pertaining to education and healthcare — will be made jointly, and Keith and Nicole have agreed to take co-parenting lessons to help them navigate the transition ahead.

Neither party is requesting spousal support or child support, but there is a clause stating that Keith has prepaid “child support obligations.”

Nicole comes out on top

In short, Nicole appears to have the upper hand, and it sounds like she and Keith have been hammering out terms for quite some time, possibly since they first separated back in June.

But interestingly, sources tell TMZ that Nicole filed abruptly with no advance warning to Keith.

It’s possible that she decided to pull the trigger now that the cat is out of the bag.

Or maybe she’s just furious over the fact that he’s already dating someone new.

According to TMZ, “sources connected to Kidman say that “all the signs point to the fact Keith is with another woman. Let’s just say, Nicole doesn’t dispute that, but she’s still shocked over it.”

There’s no indication that Keith started dating the new woman while he was still involved with Nicole, but the speed with which he’s moved on must have come as a shock after 19 years of marriage.

Here’s hoping these two can manage to keep things at least semi-civil for the sake of their kids.

Harris’ campaign book on track to be the year’s best-selling memoir

Kamala Harris’ autopsy of the 2024 election is leaving storefronts at a historic rate.

Simon & Schuster, the book’s publisher, announced Monday that the former vice president’s book had sold 350,000 copies across the country in its first week on sale, putting it on track to be the year’s top-selling memoir. Just three celebrity memoirs — from Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Prince Harry — have bested the week one total since 2023, the publisher said.

“In addition to being one of the most interesting books ever written about the experience of running for President of the United States, the success of 107 DAYS proves what a galvanizing and inspiring cultural figure Kamala Harris is,” Jonathan Karp, president and CEO of Simon & Schuster, said in a statement.

But “107 Days,” the former vice president’s account of the frenetic 15 weeks following her elevation to the top of the Democratic ticket and culminating in Donald Trump’s November victory, hasn’t exactly ingratiated Harris to other leaders in her own party.

Top Democrats, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have all bristled at jabs Harris wrote into her book describing the first hours of her campaign and the process by which she selected a running mate.

And the media blitz surrounding her book release, which has seen Harris attempt to walk back some of her criticism and refuse to rule out another presidential run, has only further alienated Democrats still sore over losing the White House to Trump in last year’s election.

But it was Harris’ criticism of former President Joe Biden, her boss in the White House, that drew the most attention. In her memoir, Harris wrote that the White House communications shop under Biden saddled her with unpopular policy priorities and amplified negative stories about her office. She wrote that in hindsight, refraining from pushing him to drop out of the presidential race earlier was reckless.

Still, Harris said on “The View” last week that the two have stayed in touch.

“It’s a good relationship and it’s a relationship that is based on mutual respect, having been in the trenches together, and admiration,” she said. “And it’s sincere.”
