Susan Kendall Newman Cause of Death: Daughter of Paul Newman Passes Away Unexpectedly

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We have sad news to report regarding one of Hollywood’s most beloved families:

Susan Kendall Newman, the daughter of screen legend Paul Newman, has reportedly passed away:

News of Newman’s passing comes courtesy of an obituary — apparently written by a close friend or family member — that appeared in the New York Times earlier this week.

She was 72 years old.

Loved ones recall Susan Kendall Newman’s life of activism, philanthropy

According to the obituary, Susan “passed away on August 2, 2025 from complications from chronic health condition.”

She is described as “a lifelong philanthropist and social activist devoted to civil rights, conservation education, and anti-war and nuclear disarmament efforts.”

Beginning her career as an actress, Susan appeared alongside her father in the 1977 comedy classic Slap Shot.

She went on to appear in several on- and off-Broadway productions before landing a starring role as an obsessive Beatles fan in the 1978 Robert Zemeckis film I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

In 1980, she transitioned behind the camera, producing The Shadow Box, an adaptation of Michael Cristofer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

The television version was directed by Susan’s father and starred her stepmother, Joanne Woodward.

But it was as a philanthropist, focusing on addiction counseling and drug abuse prevention, that Susan did her most impactful work.

“She oversaw the creation of a wide range of educational resources, including the video Drug-Free Kids: A Parent’s Guide, which helped parents recognize and address substance abuse,” her obituary reads.

“She was especially proud of a groundbreaking program in several states that invited 10th-grade students to create their own anti-drug television commercials.”

The eldest daughter of Paul Newman and Jackie Witte, Susan had a younger sister, Stephanie, and a brother, Scott, who died of a drug overdose in 1978.

Susan also had three half-sisters, Nell, Melissa, and Clea from Paul’s second marriage, to Joanne Woodward.

“Susan Kendall Newman will be remembered for her sharp wit and tongue, generosity and love, and her devotion to family and friends. She will be very much missed,” the obituary concludes.

Our thoughts go out to Susan’s loved ones during this enormously difficult time.

Jennifer Aniston BLASTS ‘Selfish’ Rumors, Cites Painful IVF Struggles

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Once again, Jennifer Aniston is tired of the rumors.

No, this one isn’t about salmon sperm facials or her hypnotist boyfriend.

For decades, the buzz has been that she “squandered” a chance at having a family in order to have a Hollywood career.

That’s not true. And it’s offensive. The truth is a painful subject and a personal struggle.

Jennifer Aniston has heard cruel rumors, and they can be hard to ignore

In a Harper’s Bazaar UK interview that came out on Thursday, October 9, Jennifer Aniston condemned claims that her busy career is why she never had children.

“They didn’t know my story, or what I’d been going through over the past 20 years to try to pursue a family,” she said of people circulating these rumors.

Aniston explained that this is “because I don’t go out there and tell them my medical woes.”

She correctly affirmed that her health and medical struggles are “not anybody’s business.”

Obviously, she is very well aware that being a public figure means sacrificing a certain degree of privacy. But there has to be a line — and people keep crossing it.

“But there comes a point when you can’t not hear it,” Aniston acknowledged.

“The narrative about how I won’t have a baby, won’t have a family,” she detailed.

Aniston continued, noting that these rumors claim that this is “because I’m selfish, a workaholic.”

She is not immune to these pernicious claims, noting that she is “just a human being” like anyone else.

“We’re all human beings,” Aniston emphasized. “That’s why I thought, ‘What the hell?’”

The truth is more painful than the lies

Even though Jennifer Aniston resents this pernicious rumor mill, she doesn’t step up to debunk each and every false claim.

“The news cycle is so fast, it just goes away,” she pointed out.

“Of course, there are times when I feel that sense of justice,” Aniston added.

She thinks of those times “when something has been said that isn’t true and I need to right the wrong.”

Aniston added: “And then I think, ‘Do I really?’ My family knows my truth, my friends know my truth.”

In 2022, Aniston revealed that she had tried IVF back when she was with Brad Pitt. They had wanted to start a family.

She opened up about that time in her life “because I knew a lot of women at the time who were trying to have kids.”

These were people “who were dealing with IVF.” Just as she had.

Aniston continued: “So it did feel like it was not only for myself, but for any women who were struggling with the same issue.”

And, as we know, not all fertility journeys end in conception. IVF can lead to many happy endings, but it is never a guarantee. And many people who are trying will run out of emotional strength — or funds.

Maybe society should stop expecting famous women to have kids?

Just for the record, if Jennifer Aniston had simply been too busy working, or living her life, to have kids, that would also be fine.

Not having kids is not “selfish.” And circulating this false rumor has been painful for a real human being.

Time and time again, we see people believe things and frame them as bad, when the thing is untrue and would not be bad if it were reality.

Often, this is in the political arena. Conspiracy theories and disinformation dominate too much of our culture.

In this case, however, there’s very little direct political motive. Our culture is drenched in misogyny, and a lot of people are just eager to fabricate reasons to resent a woman.

How many of them regret parroting a cruel talking point? Probably not enough, if we’re being honest.

Jimmy Kimmel Invites Donald Trump on His Show, Gets Brutally Shot Down By White House

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When Jimmy Kimmel was suspended by ABC amid pressure from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, public figures from across the political spectrum raised the red flag about government encroachment on a private citizen’s First Amendment rights.

The suspension became one of the year’s top news stories and resulted in a major ratings surge for Kimmel, once he returned to his time slot.

Interest in that bizarre series of events remains high, so it makes sense that Jimmy is eager to sit down and discuss the matter with his harshest critic.

Kimmel says he’d love to sit down with Trump for a live interview

“I’d love to have Trump on the show, for sure,” Kimmel told Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw in an interview on Thursday.

“Yeah…I’ll ask him,” the comic added.

Believe it or not, Trump has appeared on Kimmel’s show before, sitting down for an interview during his 2016 presidential campaign.

But according to White House rep Abigail Jackson, he won’t be making a return trip to the set.

“Reacting to anything Jimmy Kimmel says would require me to watch his show and I have much more entertaining things to do, like watch paint dry,” Jackson told Page Six in response to Kimmel’s remark.

Trump blasts Kimmel following news of ABC suspension

Trump, of course, was one of the first to celebrate the news that Kimmel’s show had been pulled from the air.

“Great News for America: The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” the president wrote on his Truth Social platform following Kimmel’s suspension.

“Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.”

The move came after Carr encouraged ABC and its parent company Disney to take action against Kimmel in a highly publicized podcast interview.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr told far-right pundit Benny Johnson in September (via NPR), adding:

“These companies can find ways to change conduct to take action on Kimmel or, you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Carr’s comments seem to be in response to Trump’s remarks about the possibility of revoking broadcasting licenses from networks that criticize his administration.

“They give me only bad press,” Trump said last month.

“They’re getting a license. I think maybe their license should be taken away. It will be up to Brendan Carr. I think Brendan Carr is outstanding. He’s a patriot. He loves our country, and he’s a tough guy. So we’ll see.”

Needless to say, it seems unlikely that Trump will appear on Kimmel’s show — but it would make for some quality television!

Erika Kirk vs. Bad Bunny: Turning Point USA Announces Rival Super Bowl Halftime Show

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We probably should’ve seen this one coming.

Amid the ongoing far-right fury over the Bad Bunny Super Bowl Halftime Show, a conservative organization is now offering an alternative to viewers who are outraged by … the idea of song lyrics in any language other than English?

The organization in question is Turning Point USA, which was founded by the late Charlie Kirk and is now headed by his widow, Erika Kirk.

Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, speaks during the public memorial service for right-wing activist Charlie Kirk at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on September 21, 2025.

Erika was named CEO of Turning Point following the murder of her husband last month.

The alternative halftime show is the first major initiative of her tenure.

The official TPUSA X account announced “The All American Halftime Show” on Thursday afternoon, adding that “performers and event details coming soon.”

The tweet then links to a poll, in which users can vote on the genre of the performance.

The options include: “Anything in English,” “Americana,” “Classic Rock,” “Pop,” and “Worship.”

“Hip Hop” is also an option, which, as many have pointed out, is somewhat ironic, given that Charlie famously instructed his supporters to “stop listening to rap music and this degenerate hip hop stuff.”

Shortly after news of the alternative halftime show went public, various conservative pundits applauded the news:

“Bad Bunny told Americans they had 4 months to learn Spanish if we wanted to understand the Super Bowl halftime show,” Riley Gaines wrote, referring to comments Bad Bunny made while hosting Saturday Night Live last week.

“No thanks. We’ll just have our own. Enjoy your low-rated halftime show.”

Why all the hate for Bad Bunny?

Gaines and Turning Point are not the first conservatives to lash out at the idea of a Spanish-language halftime show — far from it, in fact.

Donald Trump blasted Bad Bunny shortly after the rapper announced that he’d been selected to perform during the Super Bowl.

Shortly thereafter, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson echoed Trump’s remarks, stating that he believes the NFL made “a terrible decision.”

So why is hating on Bad Bunny the trendiest new activity among the MAGA set?

Well, it’s tough to say, but many seem to be under the impression that the artist — who was born in the US territory of Puerto Rico — is not American.

Bad Bunny attends the 2025 Met Gala Celebrating "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 05, 2025 in New York City.

Of course, even if that were true, stars who were born outside of the US — including Rihanna, The Weeknd, and Shakira — have performed at the Super Bowl, and no one protested those shows.

But those performances took place in the years before every single development was a new battleground in the never-ending culture war that pits Americans against their neighbors.

Obviously, the folks at Turning Point USA have the right to run their anti-Bunny counterprogramming.

But hopefully, we’re approaching the day when Americans will stop viewing matters like this in terms of Red vs. Blue and instead acquire a healthy suspicion for anyone who’s seeking to further divide this already combative nation.

Spanberger and Earle-Sears tussle over violent political rhetoric in only debate

Democrat Abigail Spanberger passed on a chance to use one of the most high-profile moments of her run for Virginia governor to withdraw her endorsement for her party’s attorney general nominee for his use of violent rhetoric in a text message.

The subject of Jay Jones’ violent message from three years ago emerged immediately as the Democrat faced Republican Winsome Earle-Sears on Thursday in the only planned debate of the closely watched race.

Spanberger condemned the text as “abhorrent” but repeatedly declined to say whether she would withdraw her support for Jones, saying it should be left to the voters in the Nov. 4 election.

“The voters now have the information, and it is up to voters to make an individual choice based on this information,” she said.

Jones suggested the former Republican House speaker should get “two bullets to the head.” He has apologized for the text, which became public last week amid rising fears of political violence following a string of incidents, including the killing of Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10 and the attack on Minnesota lawmakers in June.

Jones’ text dominated the early portion of the debate at Norfolk State University that otherwise include feisty exchanges on public policy and culture war issues.

Earle-Sears pivoted from the first question, about Virginia’s car tax, to insist that Spanberger address the issue. “My opponent needs to answer about Jay Jones.”

The lieutenant governor then repeatedly turned to ask Spanberger what it would take for her to call for Jones to leave the race. “You have little girls,” she said, looking directly at her opponent and ignoring moderators’ attempts to allow the Democratic nominee to answer. “What would it take? Him pulling the trigger? Is that what would do it and then you would say he needs to get out of the race, Abigail?”

While Spanberger declined to say whether she would continue to support Jones, she made it clear she disagreed with his text. “I denounced them when I learned of them and I will denounce them at every opportunity,” she said.

The debate frequently bogged down with cross-talk and by Earle-Sears’ interruptions of her opponent. Their differences centered around whose party deserves blame for the government shutdown, immigration enforcement, abortion rights and gay marriage — which the lieutenant governor opposes.

Virginia is one of two states electing governors in November and is often viewed as a bellwether election for the party occupying the White House. Democrats were hoping for decisive wins in Virginia to use as a springboard into next year’s midterms, but have encountered some turbulence as Republicans have announced a combined $3 million ad push in recent days to keep the text messaging saga top of mind for voters in the campaign’s final stretch.

President Donald Trump looms large in the Virginia gubernatorial contest. He’s not only unpopular with Democrats and Independents, his administration’s gutting of the federal government through DOGE cuts and his push to deny backpay to federal workers still on the payroll but forced off the job during the partial federal government shutdown disproportionately impact Virginia voters.

There was little talk about the history at stake during the hour-long debate. Either would be the first female governor of Virginia and Earle-Sears would be the first Black woman to lead the state.

Oregon AG to Trump: There’s no rebellion here

Dan Rayfield is Oregon’s attorney general — and the latest state-level politician to be thrust into the national spotlight by a legal clash with the Trump administration. In this instance, it’s over the federal government ordering troops into Portland, where protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been deemed rebellion by the president.

I would invite anybody to come to Oregon and I think it’s pretty clear that there isn’t an invasion going on in Oregon,” Rayfield says. “Sometimes I’ll joke the only rebellion going on right now is when I tried to feed my son a vegetable.”

The AG explained that his opposition to Trump’s proposed deployment is because, in his view, the president’s stated reasons for doing so aren’t based on the facts — or in the best interest of the people of Oregon.“If you want to deploy the military, if you want to federalize the National Guard, I’m okay with that if you have the right facts for it.,” Rayfield says. “We should give any president some deference, but when you have zero facts to base it on, that’s when you’ve got to draw the line.”

In this week’s episode of The Conversation, Rayfield talks with POLITICO’s Dasha Burns about how he’s trying to defend states rights by fending off the Trump administration’s attempted National Guard incursion in Portland, the reality of what’s happening in the city, freedom of speech and how progressive policies have drawn outside attention to the state in recent years.

Plus, blogger and activist Vani Hari — better known as “The Food Babe” — joins the show to talk about her influence on HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and how she hopes to help the MAHA agenda become reality.

Check out the interview with Dan Rayfield on YouTube and the full episode wherever you get your podcasts.
