Congressional Dems, Alaska’s Murkowski tell high court to nix emergency tariffs

WASHINGTON — More than 200 Democratic lawmakers and one Republican are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down President Donald Trump’s sweeping global emergency tariffs.

The 207 members of the U.S. House and Senate argued in an amicus brief late Friday that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, does not authorize the president to unilaterally impose tariffs. The lawmakers urged the justices to agree with a lower court finding that Trump’s wide reaching import taxes triggered under IEEPA violate the Constitution, which grants duty powers to Congress.

“IEEPA contains none of the hallmarks of legislation delegating tariff power to the executive, such as limitations tied to specific products or countries, caps on the amount of tariff increases, procedural safeguards, public input, collaboration with Congress, or time limitations,” the lawmakers wrote.

“In the five decades since IEEPA’s enactment, no President from either party, until now, has ever invoked IEEPA to impose tariffs.”

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., ranking members of the Senate committees on Foreign Relations and Finance, led the signatures of 36 members of the upper chamber. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican, was the single GOP co-signer on the brief. A majority of House Democrats, 171 in total, also joined.

The lawmakers filed the friend-of-the-court brief ahead of oral arguments scheduled before the Supreme Court next week on the question of whether Trump’s emergency tariffs are legal.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in late August upheld a lower court ruling striking down the administration’s IEEPA tariffs.

The Senate is expected to vote on three bills this week that aim to terminate Trump’s import taxes on products from Canada, Brazil and any other country subject to emergency duties.

Fentanyl, trade deficits as emergencies

Trump began imposing tariffs under IEEPA in February and March on China, Canada and Mexico, declaring these countries responsible for illegal fentanyl smuggling into the U.S.

The president escalated the emergency tariffs over the following months on goods from around the globe, declaring trade deficits a national emergency. A trade deficit means the U.S. imports more goods from a country than that nation purchases from U.S. suppliers.

Domestic businesses and purchasers now pay the U.S. government anywhere from 10% to 50% in tariffs on most imported products. The government had collected $195 billion this year in customs duties at the end of September, according to a U.S. Treasury monthly statement.

State AGs and businesses launched court challenge

Several private businesses and a dozen states sued Trump over the use of the emergency statute to trigger the steep import taxes.

Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon were among states, led by Democratic state attorneys general, that brought the suit.

Businesses that sued the Trump administration include the lead plaintiff, V.O.S. Selections, a New York-based company that imports wine and spirits from 16 countries, according to its website.

Other plaintiffs include a Utah-based plastics producer, a Virginia-based children’s electricity learning kit maker, a Pennsylvania-based fishing gear company, and a Vermont-based women’s cycling apparel company.

The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled Trump’s tariffs under IEEPA illegal in late May.

Billionaire seeks controlling interest in GCI, regulatory filings show

By: James Brooks, Alaska Beacon

Alaska’s largest residential internet provider may soon come under the control of billionaire businessman John Malone, one of America’s biggest private landowners and wealthiest people

On Oct. 3, Malone filed paperwork with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska asking for permission to take majority ownership of GCI Liberty Inc., the parent company of GCI Communications, Alaska’s largest internet company.

Malone already owns a majority of GCI Liberty’s voting shares, according to RCA filings, but until now has been limited by agreements that hold his voting power below 50%.

According to the filings, Malone is asking for authority to increase his voting power to “a level that would constitute control of GCI Liberty and its certificated subsidiary GCICC.”

The filings also state that both GCI Liberty and Malone have asked for a waiver that would allow them to keep their financial documents confidential.

Under state law and regulation, those documents would ordinarily be available for public inspection as part of regulators’ approval process.

Public comments on the request for secrecy are due to RCA by Tuesday, Oct. 28, and the state regulator is expected to review the takeover request after that date.

The takeover would also affect United Utilities, which provides telephone and internet service in rural Alaska, including much of the Yukon-Kuskokwim river delta region, filings show.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

After months of rumors, we now know that Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are officially dating.

And they made no effort to conceal the fact that they’re more than friends!

Katy and Justin confirm their romance

According to a report from TMZ, Katy and Justin were spotted strolling hand-in-hand as they exited the cabaret show at the Crazy Horse in Paris.

Knowing that Katy and Justin were inside, paparazzi reportedly waited at the exit “in anticipation.”

Their patience was rewarded when Katy and Justin were caught in the midst of their most obvious PDA to date.

It’s not the first time that Katy and Justin were spotted acting flirty.

But holding hands while entering an SUV? In Paris? On her birthday?

Yeah, these two are definitely an item.

For a while, there were rumors that Justin and Katy had “cooled off” — but now it looks as though they’ve heated back up!

Both parties are relatively newly divorced.

Trudeau ended his 18-year marriage to Sophie Grégoire in 2023, and Katy called it quits with Orlando Bloom earlier this year.

But is this romance the real deal or just a rebound fling? Insiders can’t seem to comt a consensus.

“Dating Katy may just be Justin’s answer to going to Burning Man,” a “Canadian society source” recently told Page Six. “It’s a bit of a midlife crisis.”

Well, whatever the case, it certainly seems that these two are having fun at the moment!

Nick Mangold Cause of Death: New York Jets Legend Passes Away at 41

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We have tragic news to report from the world of sports:

Retired New York Jets center Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41.

News of Mangold’s death comes courtesy of a statement from his former team:

“Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson.

“He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football,” his statement continued.

“Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Nick Mangold’s cause of death revealed

Mangold passed just weeks after revealing that he was in need of a kidney transplant due to a genetic condition.

“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote on social media.

“I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”

Fans and friends pay tribute to a football legend

Drafted in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Mangold quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier centers.

In the seasons that followed, the Centerville, Ohio native helped lead the Jets’ offense to two consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances in 2009 and 2010.

Sadly, Mangold’s time in the league was plagued by injuries, and he was released by the Jets in 2017. He retired the following year.

Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.

Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez — who was recently arrested for assault — was one of the many who paid tribute to Mangold following news of his passing.

“We lost a good man today. I know @nickmangold will be a hall-of-famer, but there’s more to his story than his accomplishments on the gridiron,” Sanchez wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“He was more than a teammate. He was my big brother who introduced me to the NFL,” Sanchez continued, adding:

“He showed me the ropes. He was my friend and confidant. He was a role model and a great father to his children and husband to his wife. Our hearts are heavy. We will miss you. Rest easy amigo. I love you big fella.”

Our thoughts go out to Nick Mangold’s loved ones during this enormously difficult time.

Kody Brown Keeps Saying Really Sexist Stuff on New Reality Show

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As fans of Lifetime know well, Kody Brown is a pretty huge chauvinist.

Now, fans of the Fox reality competition Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test are learning the same lesson about the Sister Wives patriarch.

This is a man, remember, whose only remaining spouse has called him a disgusting pig.

Over the first couple episodes of the aforementioned series, it’s easy to see why.

(Pete Dadds/ FOX)

“Here’s the thing,” Brown said on the October 23 installment of Special Forces. “I don’t consider myself a great leader. But good quality manhood, masculinity, is taking responsibility for the job that needs to be done and doing it.”

To be clear, this isn’t the worst thing Kody has ever said.

On its own, we can see why folks would wonder why it paints Kody is any bad light at all.

But the father of 17, who previously confessed to faking his way through this competition and not really being tough at all, has said a lot more on air.

Kody Brown never really looks to happy, does he? (TLC)

On the premiere of this season, for another example, Kody brought up his priorities for competition. “I’m gonna say this at the risk of sounding sexist,” he explained, prior to sounding sexist and adding:

“I think men want to be respected and women want to be loved. I don’t care if you love me. I care if you respect me.”

For the record, no one really respects Kody, either.

This is someone who openly blames his kids for his lack of a relationship with them.

Kody Brown appears to be in distress here. (TLC)

Following his completion of the first challenge on the show, which involved rappelling from a helicopter, Brown said that doing difficult tasks is part of “being a man.”

Sorry, ladies. We guess that sort of thing just isn’t in your job/life description.

We wonder why three of Kody’s four spouses have left him over the past few years.

Sister Wives airs new episodes at 10/9c on Sunday nights on Lifetime.
