‘The Velvet Rope’: How Janet Jackson Tied Herself In Controversy

Janet Jackson The Velvet Rope Album Cover web optimised 820

Released on October 7, 1997, Janet Jackson’s sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope, caught a lot of people off guard with its frank exploration of sexuality, the complexity of human relationships, and the worrisome burden of emotional trauma. “I always write about what’s going on in my life,” Jackson told this writer in 2001, reflecting on her most controversial album. “It’s like cutting yourself open and exposing all of your insides, and at that point you’re very vulnerable. People were so eager to take potshots at me with The Velvet Rope album, but I was really being completely honest with everything that I was saying.”

Though Janet Jackson’s solo recording career began in 1982 at A&M Records, where the label was initially keen to portray her as a cute, innocuous, girl-next-door figure, she grew frustrated at being a producer’s puppet and decided to reinvent herself. Adding edge and attitude, Jackson hooked up with ex-Time members, songwriters and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, in 1986, and began making music that reflected her life. What resulted was the platinum album Control, whose autobiographical theme about taking the initiative and being true to yourself instantly transformed Janet into a pop star whose success began to rival that of her more famous elder sibling, Michael.

“I’m inviting you inside my velvet rope”

By the time The Velvet Rope came along in 1997, the girl from Gary, Indiana, had morphed into a confident young woman whose two follow-up albums to Control – 1989’s Rhythm Nation 1814 and 1993’s Janet, both co-produced by the singer with the dependable Jam & Lewis – made her the most famous woman in the world at that point.

But The Velvet Rope, following in the wake of a newly renegotiated contract with Virgin Records (bringing her a massive and – at the time – record-breaking $80 million advance), mired Jackson in controversy, especially with conservative religious groups. They objected in particular to the singer’s acceptance of same-sex relationships, which manifested itself in the song “Free Xone,” a satirical swipe at sexual discrimination riding on funkified backbeat. Jackson also raised eyebrows with her daring take on Rod Stewart’s “Tonight’s The Night,” subverting the original by transforming it into a lesbian ode to seduction.

The whole album was an access-all-areas invitation into Janet Jackson’s internal private world – a world usually cordoned off by a velvet rope. Explaining the album’s title and concept, Jackson said, “We’ve all driven by premieres or nightclubs, and seen the rope separating those who can enter and those who can’t. Well, there’s also a velvet rope we have inside us, keeping others from knowing our feelings. In The Velvet Rope, I’m trying to expose and explore those feelings. I’m inviting you inside my velvet rope.”

In terms of its sound, The Velvet Rope is breathtakingly kaleidoscopic in the way it refracts pop, R&B, jazz, rock, funk, folk, hip-hop, electronica, classical music, and trip-hop styles through the prism of Jackson’s personality, arriving at a unique and highly individual sonic identity.

“It was very cathartic and therapeutic”

On the tone-setting introductory title song, Jackson sings “living the truth will set you free” over a mesmeric groove, and then for the remainder of the album proceeds to share her thoughts on a wide range of subjects. She mourns a friend who died of AIDS on a catchy slice of retro soul called “Together Again,” and investigates domestic abuse on the chilling “What About,” a split-personality song defined by dramatic moods as it fluctuates between a soft ballad and strident piece of thumping R&B.

Joni Mitchell tops the album’s guestlist, appearing alongside A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip on The Velvet Rope’s first single, “Got Till It’s Gone,” which samples the Canadian singer’s 1970 protest song “Big Yellow Taxi.” Elsewhere, the New Jack Swing group Blackstreet appear on the plaintive slow jam “I Get Lonely,” which was the album’s biggest single, peaking at No.1 in the US R&B charts.

For Janet Jackson, who openly admitted to suffering a breakdown during her Janet World Tour prior to the sessions for The Velvet Rope, the album – though at times difficult to make – was ultimately rewarding in terms of both her personal and musical evolution. Its soul-baring quality gave Jackson a valuable kind of therapy through which she could come to terms with her personal problems. “That wasn’t a bad space to be in because it taught me a great deal,” she said, 17 years ago. “It was very cathartic and therapeutic. Writing music and melodies is a sure way of finding release.”

Despite the controversy it engendered, The Velvet Rope topped the album charts around the world on its release in the autumn of 1997 and reaffirmed Janet Jackson’s position as the pre-eminent top-selling female recording artist of her generation. But Jackson’s main goal was more about personal development and exorcising her demons than selling records. Above all else, her honesty on The Velvet Rope was genuine and sincere. “I think it’s important to be true to yourself in your music,” she said. “I think that’s the only way I can actually write music.”

Lazarus and Rakim’s “Not to Be Defined” Lands Grammy Consideration for Best Rap Song

October 2025, Hip-hop history is being written as “Not to Be Defined” by Detroit-based physician-rapper Lazarus featuring the legendary Rakim officially enters Grammy consideration for Best Rap Song.

The collaboration has already struck a chord with audiences worldwide, amassing nearly 10 million views on YouTube since its release and drawing unanimous praise from critics and fans alike. The record has been hailed as a lyrical masterclass, seamlessly bridging eras of hip-hop while remaining deeply relevant in today’s rap landscape.

At the core of the track lies Lazarus’ relentless pen and Rakim’s timeless delivery a combination that has left listeners describing it as “a song that will outlast its time.” Behind the boards is Grammy-winning super-producer Dem Jointz, known for shaping iconic records with Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg. His crisp, cinematic production provides the perfect foundation for Lazarus and Rakim’s verbal fireworks.

“Hip-hop has always been about truth, skill, and evolution,” said Lazarus. “To stand alongside Rakim, the God MC himself, on a track that’s being recognized at the Grammys is beyond anything I imagined when I first picked up a mic.”

For Rakim, the recognition is especially historic. Despite being revered as one of the greatest rappers of all time, this consideration marks a rare moment in his career potentially his first-ever Grammy nomination. “It’s a blessing to see the culture still growing and to be part of a record that represents that growth,” Rakim shared.

Music critics have echoed the sentiment. One review called the track “an undeniable contender for Best Rap Song not just for its bars, but for its cultural weight.”

As awards season approaches, “Not to Be Defined” continues to prove its title true, a song beyond labels, beyond eras, and beyond definition.

EXCLUSIVE: Lil Durk Says Feds Are Withholding Info; Tries To Get Murder Case Dismissed

Lil Durk is pushing to have his federal murder-for-hire case tossed, claiming prosecutors are hiding key facts that would allow him to mount a fair defense in court.

The Chicago-born rapper is accused of orchestrating a plot to kill a man identified as Quando Rondo, in retaliation for the 2020 killing of his close friend King Von.

Prosecutors allege Durk used coded messages and promised cash or music deals through his Only The Family (OTF) collective to incentivize the hit.

Federal authorities say Durk directed his crew to fly from Chicago to Los Angeles in August 2022 to kill Quando Rondo, who managed to escape the broad daylight shooting at a gas station.

Quando Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, was shot dead during the violent altercation.

Prosecutors claim Durk arranged for vehicles, weapons and ski masks to carry out the ambush. Durk’s legal team—Drew Findling, Marissa Goldberg, Jonathan Brayman and Christy O’Connor—argues the indictment is vague and lacks the specifics needed to prepare for trial.

“While the Indictment alleges that the co-conspirators carried out various acts ‘at the direction of’ Mr. Banks—flying to Los Angeles; tracking, stalking, and attempting to kill [Quando Rondo] by gunfire; and procuring the firearms and equipment used to do so—it fails to give any specifics. When, where, how, and to whom did Mr. Banks give these alleged directions? To ensure the basic fairness of this trial, the defense is entitled to know,” Findling said.

The indictment accuses Durk of setting a bounty and offering “lucrative music opportunities” to anyone who carried out the killing. Defense attorneys say the government has not identified who received the messages, what the alleged code words were, or when and where any offers were made.

They argue that the lack of detail violates Durk’s constitutional rights and could lead to a conviction based on unclear or shifting allegations.

“What the Indictment fails to tell us are the very things the defense is entitled to know: the ‘operative facts’ underlying the government’s theories of Mr. Banks’ guilt. There is no allegation here that Mr. Banks physically participated in the stalking and shooting at issue,” Findling added.

The defense has filed a motion to dismiss the charges or, at the very least, compel prosecutors to provide a detailed bill of particulars.

Durk remains in federal custody after his October 17, 2024, arrest near Miami International Airport.

A hearing on the motion is scheduled for 10 A.M. on November 18, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald in Los Angeles.

Donald Trump Reveals Diddy Has Already Asked For Pardon Following Federal Sentencing

Diddy became the subject of unexpected political chatter this week when Donald Trump revealed the rap mogul personally asked him for a pardon following his recent conviction on federal sex trafficking charges.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (October 6), Trump was asked whether he would consider pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein. Trump replied, “I’d have to take a look at it,” before pivoting to a broader discussion about pardon requests.

“I have had a lot of people ask me for pardons,” Trump said. “I call him Puff Daddy, he has asked me for a pardon.”

The revelation came just days after Diddy was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison. On Friday (October 3), a judge handed down the sentence after Combs was found guilty of two counts of violating the Mann Act, a federal law that prohibits transporting individuals across state lines for illegal sexual activity.

According to court documents and testimony, the case centered on what prosecutors described as Diddy’s orchestration of multi-day sex parties, known in his inner circle as “freak offs.” These events allegedly involved women and male escorts whom Combs paid, directed and often filmed during the encounters.

Prosecutors argued that Diddy used his wealth and influence to manipulate participants, many of whom were reportedly in vulnerable positions. The Department of Justice said the evidence included video recordings, financial transactions and testimony from multiple witnesses who described a pattern of coercion and exploitation.

The trial, which lasted three weeks in federal court, featured graphic details and drew significant media attention. Diddy’s defense team claimed the encounters were consensual and denied any criminal wrongdoing. However, the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on both counts.

During sentencing, Judge Arun Subramanian said the case was “not about consensual adult behavior” but about “systematic abuse of power and violation of federal law.” He added that Diddy celebrity status “does not place him above accountability.”

The 55-year-old music mogul, entrepreneur and Bad Boy Records founder has not publicly commented on the sentencing or the pardon request. His legal team is expected to file an appeal in the coming weeks.

Trump’s comments add a political twist to an already high-profile legal case. While he did not indicate whether he would grant Combs a pardon if reelected, the former president’s remarks have reignited debate over the use of presidential clemency for celebrities and public figures.

Diddy began serving his sentence immediately following the October 3 hearing.

Arby’s Launches Steak Nuggets & Pusha-T Is Sure To Make Money Off The Ad Campaign

Arby’s is living up to its famous slogan in a way that would make Pusha-T proud.

The Atlanta-based fast-food chain launched its innovative Steak Nuggets nationwide on October 6, 2025, marking what the company calls an “entirely new way to nugget.”

The limited-time offering features tender, juicy, hand-cut, bite-sized morsels of steak, seasoned with garlic and pepper for a bold, smoky flavor, according to the product announcement. These aren’t your typical chicken nuggets – they’re seared, smoked steak pieces designed for convenience and portability.

“Who doesn’t love tender and savory steak? But, until now, it’s been inconvenient to eat, particularly on the go,” said Jeff Baker, Chief Marketing Officer at Arby’s. “That’s why we created this new innovative product. Two of America’s favorite foods—nuggets and steak—combined to create Arby’s Steak Nuggets. No knife needed, fork optional.”

Interestingly, Arby’s “We Have the Meats” campaign has a Hip-Hop connection. Rapper Pusha-T, who co-wrote McDonald’s “I’m Lovin’ It” jingle in 2003, has been earning royalties from Arby’s commercials since 2018.

The campaign uses Yogi and Skrillex’s 2014 EDM hit “Burial” featuring Pusha-T and despite his voice not appearing in the ads, he owns 40 percent of the track and gets paid every time it airs.

This isn’t Arby’s first test of the steak nuggets concept. The chain introduced the item in select markets earlier this year, including three Southern cities, before the nationwide rollout.

LeBron James “The Second Decision” Post Has Laker Fans Terrified – Here’s Why

LeBron James dropped a cryptic teaser Monday that has the sports world buzzing, hinting at a major announcement titled “The Second Decision” and reigniting speculation about his NBA future.

The 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers forward posted a short video on social media showing him seated across from another man on a basketball court.

The caption read: “The decision of all decisions. October 7th. 12pm EST.”

Now approaching his 41st birthday in December, James remains one of the league’s most dominant figures. But with his 23rd season about to begin, questions around his retirement are growing louder.

The timing of this announcement—just before the Lakers tip off their new campaign—has many wondering if James is preparing to walk away from the game.

Still, not everyone is convinced this is a farewell. James has built a billion-dollar business portfolio, including ventures in film, television and sports ownership. Some believe the announcement could be tied to a marketing effort or brand expansion rather than a career-ending revelation.

The post instantly drew comparisons to his 2010 ESPN special “The Decision”, where James revealed he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. That moment triggered widespread backlash, especially in Cleveland and changed the tone of NBA free agency forever.

Then-Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert labeled it a “cowardly betrayal,” and angry fans burned his jersey in protest. James would go on to win two titles in Miami before returning to Cleveland in 2014.

Off the court, James continues to break barriers. In April, he became the first male pro athlete to be turned into a Ken doll by Mattel. Last year, he and his son Bronny made history as the first father-son duo to share an NBA court after Bronny joined the Lakers.

Since being drafted No. 1 overall by Cleveland in 2003, James has won four championships and rewritten the league’s record books. His career has spanned three franchises—Cleveland, Miami and Los Angeles—with each move sparking intense media coverage.

Online reactions to Monday’s teaser have ranged from emotional farewells to speculation about a new business venture. The buzz reflects James’ rare status as both a basketball icon and a global brand.

The announcement is set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. GMT and will likely draw massive attention, whatever the message may be.

The Remy Network will feature a mix of original scripted series, documentaries, reality shows, concerts, music specials, sports programming and financial content—all centered around the culture and influence of Hip-Hop.

To handle the technical side, Remy Ma has partnered with OTTera, a company that specializes in global OTT and FAST channel solutions. OTTera will manage the distribution and monetization of the platform, ensuring it reaches audiences across various devices and services.

“OTTera is thrilled to partner with Remy Network on this exciting launch,” said Stephen L. OTTera x Remy Network

Remy Ma built her television experience across reality, hosting, and scripted roles. She reemerged on Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015, sharing her life and creative comeback with viewers, then starred in Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies, which highlighted her family dynamic.

She later hosted VH1’s My True Crime Story, bringing her voice to tales of resilience and redemption, and appeared in scripted projects like Queens and The Perfect Find. Those experiences positioned her to lead her own platform with a clear understanding of storytelling and production.

Remy Network represents a natural evolution from Remy Ma’s earlier venture into entertainment entrepreneurship.

In 2021, she launched Chrome 23, a women’s-only battle rap league. The name stands for “Chromosome 23” – the pair of chromosomes that determines biological sex.

The battle rap league has featured prominent female battlers, including Ms. Hustle, 40 B.A.R.R.S., and Jaz the Rapper. Chrome 23 events have drawn significant viewership on platforms like YouTube, with some battles reaching over 100,000 views.

Both Chrome 23 and Remy Network reflect the artist’s commitment to creating platforms for underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry. The streaming service launch positions her as a big-time player in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

The November 28 debut will test whether Remy Ma’s vision for culturally authentic programming can capture audiences in an increasingly crowded streaming market.

Remy Network is scheduled to go live on November 28, aligning its launch with a major U.S. holiday to maximize visibility.

EXCLUSIVE: T.D. Jakes Gets Win, Judge Sanctions Tyrone Blackburn For AI Generated Mess In Lawsuit

T.D. Jakes scored a courtroom victory in Texas as a federal judge sanctioned attorney Tyrone Blackburn for submitting legal documents riddled with bogus citations generated by artificial intelligence.

The case stemmed from a defamation lawsuit filed by Jakes against Duane Youngblood, who had accused the bishop of sexual misconduct in the 1980s.

Jakes denied all allegations and claimed Youngblood attempted to extort him for $6 million before going public.

Blackburn, representing Youngblood, filed court briefs that included fabricated legal references and misquoted prior rulings. The judge found the errors egregious and deliberate.

“Blackburn doubled-down. His reply brief contained the same problems as his initial brief. Rather than take responsibility for his misconduct, apologize, and voluntarily withdraw his brief, Blackburn pointed the finger at Plaintiff’s counsel, wrongly accusing them of doing exactly what he did twice—using AI to craft an inaccurate brief,” the court wrote.

Blackburn acknowledged using generative AI to draft the filings and apologized, blaming his unfamiliarity with the technology. But the court wasn’t buying it.

“The Court holds that Blackburn engaged in sanctionable conduct. At best, he knowingly and repeatedly submitted legal documents that he neither prepared nor reviewed to ensure their accuracy… It is inexcusable to skirt this duty by relying on AI to draft a brief. Blackburn did so and, when accused, did so again.”

Jakes’ legal team requested over $76,000 in attorneys’ fees, but the judge instead imposed a $5,000 fine on Blackburn, citing deterrence as the goal.

Blackburn must pay the fine in monthly installments. The court also revoked his pro hac vice status, barring him from practicing in the district.

Any future request to appear in court must include a copy of the sanction order.

This isn’t Blackburn’s only legal headache. In a separate federal case, Fat Joe is being sued for $20 million by his former hypeman, Terrance Dixon, who accuses the rapper of underpayment and coercing him into “thousands of sex acts.”

Fat Joe’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, blasted Blackburn for filing “bogus” pleadings in that case as well, citing the same AI-generated citation issues.

Tacopina called Blackburn’s conduct part of a broader trend of “flagrant disregard of his duties,” referencing both the Jakes and Fat Joe lawsuits.

As for Blackburn, he recently told a judge that Fat Joe’s lawyer’s blistering attacks have caused him severe distress that required hospitalization.

Cardi B May Have Paid Offset Out In Rumored Divorce Settlement

Ayo…

Cardi B and Offset’s situation just took a chaotic twist. Word is Cardi has agreed to shell out millions in spousal support to Offset to finalize their divorce! On top of that, the streets are saying the asset split is 70/30 in his favor. Hmmmm…interesting. Offset might be walking away with the lion’s share of the bag, but let us walk down this road a bit more.

READ ONLY: Eminem Dragged Into False Nicki Minaj & Cardi B Rumor Online

Now, Offset reportedly maintains Cardi left him. And even got pregnant by another man while they were still legally married. She says he stopped being a dad to their kids. This feels like a full-blown soap opera.

Fans have noticed the tension for months, but this latest twist sounds like a Tyler Perry movie. Before I continue, this is just talk in the streets. I do not see any full blown, clear reports yet. I am sure they are reading this now and verifying it. Nevertheless, Cardi’s been outside, smiling, performing and flexing her independence. That belly has not stopped anything. Offset’s been slightly lowkey, but he might turn up after this. He might walk away from a divorce richer than he went in and that is a mighty feat!

This one hits different, because Cardi asked “Am I The Drama?” Now, I believe we have the answer. The chatter online is relentless! I hope she is taking care of herself and the bun in her oven.

Stay locked in, because if Offset or if Cardi starts talking about this, we’ll all be tuned in, baby.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie & Crew Caught In Violent Club Brawl In Japan

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie found himself in the middle of a wild nightclub brawl in Tokyo over the weekend, as his entourage clashed with another group during the Magic City Takeover at Zouk Japan.

Footage circulating online appears to show the 29-year-old Bronx rapper and his crew caught in a violent altercation at the club on Friday (October 3). Several individuals can be seen stomping on a man on the ground amid the chaos.

Video obtained by TMZ shows the aftermath of the melee—furniture flipped, cash scattered, and partygoers scrambling to escape the chaos.

Witnesses say A Boogie was seen on a platform during the incident, appearing to look for something to hurl into the crowd.

According to individuals present at the club, confusion surrounded which crew actually initiated the fight.

However, staff at Zouk Japan reportedly suggested A Boogie’s team was the main aggressor. Despite the scale of the disturbance, no arrests had been made as of Monday (October 6).

The rapper was in Japan to perform at the Force Festival, a major Hip-Hop event featuring artists like Future, Central Cee, Metro Boomin, Trippie Redd, Sexyy Red, Latto, and Polo G.

Early speculation suggested a possible clash with Future’s entourage, but sources later confirmed that his team was not involved.

This isn’t the first time A Boogie has found himself in the middle of a chaotic scene abroad.

In April 2024, the rapper was involved in a confrontation outside a Paris nightclub after he and his entourage were denied entry.

The situation escalated when a bouncer grabbed a pole and another allegedly used pepper spray, sparking a physical clash between both sides. A visibly frustrated A Boogie then broke a bottle and reportedly brandished it before the video abruptly ended.
