Cruise ship helps stranded skiff and crew in Southeast Alaska as Zuckerberg yacht stands by

The UnCruise ship Wilderness Legacy is seen in an undated file photo provided by UnCruise. (Handout photo)

By: James Brooks, Alaska Beacon

Editor’s note:
This article, initially published Friday, was updated Sunday morning with a statement from Zuckerberg.

A small cruise ship operating in Southeast Alaska made an unexpected detour on Monday night to help a 21-foot skiff that ran out of fuel between Petersburg and Juneau.

Michael Love, a software developer from New York City, was a passenger aboard the cruise ship and described the event on social media.

What got his attention the most wasn’t the rescue itself — it was when the captain announced that the yacht of billionaire Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg was closer and hadn’t answered the radio call for help.

“There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this,” he said in a post on the social media network Bluesky.

Vessel tracking services in the area back up that account — they show the $300 million, 387-foot yacht Launchpad slowing to a halt outside Farragut Bay as the UnCruise Adventures ship Wilderness Legacy steams around and past the Launchpad, stops at the apparent site of the skiff, then tows it into sheltered Farragut Bay.

Through a Bluesky message, Love said it was nice to be on a boat that was engaging with its surroundings in a positive way.

“Frankly, if I was Mark Zuckerberg I would be absolutely ecstatic at a chance to do something helpful for someone in need and maybe get some good PR out of it,” he said.

Social media accounts responding to Love’s account accused the yacht’s crew of violating international agreements that mandate aid from the nearest ship to one in distress.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard and the Marine Exchange of Alaska, which monitors ship traffic in Alaska, there was no distress call — just a general request for assistance.

Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Shannon Shepard said by email that the Coast Guard heard the call for help just after 9:30 p.m. Monday night.

“At approximately 9:56 p.m., the Coast Guard determined they were not in distress and issued a marine assistance request broadcast on their behalf,” she said.

John Hollingsworth is the chief operations officer of the Marine Exchange, which is based in Juneau and repeated the broadcast.

“We did assist the Coast Guard with callouts on our radio and (were) able to hail the Wilderness Legacy who ended up rendering assistance,” he said.

“From my experience, I know that situations like this contain myriad details for the vessels involved, so the AIS (tracking) snippet you obtained only reveals one of those details,” he said by email. “I do know that Wilderness Legacy is an UnCruise vessel and is very familiar with Alaska waters, so that may have contributed to them rendering assistance quickly.”

No information was available Friday about who may have been aboard the Launchpad on Monday evening. The Launchpad has been in Southeast Alaska for much of the summer.

After the initial publication of this article, a spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg emailed a statement: “Mark and his family were not on board at the time of the incident. As the Coast Guard noted, the boat was not in distress, and by the time the crew reviewed the Coast Guard contact on a different radio channel from the one they were operating on, the assist was already underway. We’re grateful all parties are safe.”

The Wilderness Legacy’s detour is the second incidence of aid rendered by a small cruise ship in Southeast Alaska within two weeks. On July 30, the National Geographic Quest assisted a family who had to swim to shore in Glacier Bay National Park after a humpback whale sank their sailboat.

Dan Blanchard, who owns UnCruise, said he wasn’t initially aware of the Wilderness Legacy’s detour because “this kind of aid is such a common thing that it does not always rise to my attention.”

Sarah Scoltock, a spokeswoman for UnCruise, said the Wilderness Legacy was able to refuel the skiff after towing it into a sheltered area.

“The next day the (Wilderness Legacy’s) captain, Sean Manske, contacted them and received word they made it safely to Petersburg,” she said by email.

Vicki Gunvalson EXPLODES at Teresa Giudice, Offers to Teach Her a ‘Lesson’ on …

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In retrospect, the explosive clash between Vicki Gunvalson and Teresa Giudice was inevitable.

And it’s also arguably the point of Ultimate Girls Trip.

Teresa was opening up about one of the darkest times in her life — her stint behind bars.

Vicki’s explosive reactions shocked even their fellow Housewives.

‘I never want to know any of this!’

During the August 9 episode of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th, Teresa told the confessional cameras that there have been real downsides.

“The past 15 years, I know everybody thinks ‘I’m on TV and it’s so fun,’” she said during the Season 6 premiere. “It’s not fun.”

She is of course referring to her 11 months of incarceration.

She spoke with Porsha Williams, Kyle Richards, Luann de Lesseps, and more, explaining what cost her her freedom — and, in a sense, her whole family — from her point of view.

“I’ve gone away,” Teresa recalled. “I signed a refinance that my ex-husband told me to sign, he used my credit. Never in a million years did I think I was going to go to jail for that.”

Teresa continued, continuing to express her belief that her ex-husband, Joe, dragged her into trouble.

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years. So the government came knocking on our door,” she expressed.

Sometimes, people in dire financial straights have to put off payments that then balloon. But the Giudice family in this time was not only making money, but flaunting their wealth on reality television.

Vicki’s odd and childish response sounded almost like boredom, as she snapped: “I never want to know any of this!” Oh boy.

“I pay my taxes on time, all the time, no penalties, no interest, no nothing,” Vicki bragged for some reason. “You might have a financial lesson later sometime this week.”

‘I might be flipping her off this boat’

Numerous Housewives jumped to Teresa’s defense. Vicki was being super weird.

After all, Teresa was opening up about a vulnerable moment.

She was also pointing out that her ex-husband, Joe Guidice, dragged her name and money into alleged mortgage fraud.

(Joe served 41 months behind bars and then was deported to Italy, a country that he had never known.)

With that in mind, it’s a little odd for Vicki, of all people, to blame a woman whose man led her astray. (Anyone else remember Brooks Ayers?)

“I get what she’s saying,” Vicki eventually conceded. “You were the product of what happened.”

She argued: “But it gets complicated when there’s a business involved, and you always have to file your taxes.”

That’s not bad advice. But most people are not unreasonable for trusting a spouse to handle these matters.

“If Vicki keeps poking the bear,” Teresa told the camera, “who knows I might be flipping her off this boat. We don’t know.”

Careful, Vicki Gunvalson — Teresa Giudice might blow a casket.

State Senate candidate Louise Stutes agrees to settle campaign finance violations

Rep. Louise Stutes, R-Kodiak, will pay more than $2,000 to settle a series of campaign finance complaints filed by a former chair of the Alaska Republican Party in 2025.

The Alaska Public Offices Commission approved the final consent agreement July 28. Under the terms of the agreement, Stutes will pay a penalty of $2,643.50 and repay her campaign $13,869.44 to settle complaints regarding improper campaign finance reporting and improper campaign spending in the 2020, 2022 and 2024 elections.

Investigating the complaint by Randy Ruderich against Stutes, the commission said the Kodiak legislator responded promptly to requests for information, and that there was “nothing to indicate” that serious violations identified by Ruderich were “intentional or provided a personal benefit to the candidate.”

Stutes, who has represented Kodiak, Cordova and parts of the Gulf of Alaska coast since 2015, is running for state Senate this year, seeking to replace Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak. Two other Republicans are also running for the seat.

By phone, Stutes said Ruderich informed her about the complaint before he sent it to APOC, and she ended up being the one informing regulators about the issue.

The issues were the result of innocent mistakes, and she’s actually grateful to Ruderich for pointing them out, she said. She’s no longer trying to keep her own campaign accounts and has hired a professional.

“What gave me the most satisfaction of all this was saying to Randy Ruderich, ‘I really appreciate you calling this to my attention because if you didn’t, I’d still be making those mistakes, and then it would be a great big mess.’”

Jamaican Hitmaker Masicka Drops ‘Spend’

Masicka Spend

Masicka has released a new single titled “Spend.” The Jamaican recording artist also has a new album, Forever Reign, arriving worldwide on August 14 via Def Jam Recordings. One day later, Masicka will make his debut performance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as the headliner of Reggae Fest.

The album announcement and Barclays Center booking were first reported by Billboard, according to a press release. “This album represents growth, elevation, and the next chapter of my journey,” Masicka said in the announcement.

“It’s his time,” Reggae Fest founder & CEO CJ Milan told Billboard of the occasion. “Masicka is in his prime right now; ‘Slip & Slide’ [on Di Genius’ ‘Hill & Gully’ riddim] is big; he’s definitely one of the hottest [artists right now]. And he’s also just an amazing person. I’ve worked with him before, and I just think he’s ready.”

The announcement follows Masicka’s Her Name Is Love EP, which was released in December via Def Jam and recently picked up a dancehall album of the year nomination at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards.

Her Name Is Love is really me tapping into another dimension of who I am, not stepping away from the grit, but showing that there’s more to the man behind the music,” Masicka told Billboard. “The ladies always support my work, and I wanted to create something that speaks directly to them… their stories, their strength, their emotions and the energy they bring to the culture. This EP is about connection, emotion and the different forms love can take.”

His 17-track album Generation of Kings arrived in 2023 and marked his first full-length project for Def Jam. His 2021 album 438, meanwhile, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, the same peak later matched by Generation of Kings. In March 2026, the government of Antigua and Barbuda approved Masicka’s appointment as Cultural Ambassador for Youth Talent Development and Creative Industries Collaboration.

Brad Pitt Reveals That He’s Drinking Again After 7 Years of Sobriety

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after alleging that he engaged in violent and abusive behavior while he was drunk aboard a private jet.

Pitt quit drinking shortly thereafter. The effort came too late to save his marriage, but in interviews that touched on the matter, the Oscar winner was adamant that he was grateful to be sober.

So Pitt’s revelation that he’s now “off the wagon” after seven years of sobriety has come as a shock to many fans.

In a profile published by Esquire today, interviewer Ryan D’Agostino notes that Pitt offered him wine and then asks the actor-pp if he keeps a bottle on hand for the benefit of his guests.

“No, I got — I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” Brad clarifies with a “little laugh,” adding:

“In a more restrained manner. I got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities.”

“You can have a glass of wine,” D’Agostino ventures, leading Pitt to remark:

“Yeah. Well . . . I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it.”

The revelation comes as a surprise, as Pitt publicly thanked Bradley Cooper for helping him get sober while speaking at a 2020 award ceremony.

And he opened up about the joys of a booze-free existence as recently as June of 2025, when he discussed his sobriety journey on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast.

News of his relapse (or whatever you wish to call it) comes on the heels of reports that all of Brad’s kids have legally dropped “Pitt” from their names.

Brad and Angelina’s divorce has been one of the messiest in Hollywood history, with insiders claiming that Pitt blames Jolie for “alienating” his children from him.

At one point in the Esquire interview, Pitt referred to a period in which he felt such intense pain that he could imagine viewing death as a relief.

Whet D’Agostino asked if he was referring to the situation with his children, Pitt demurred, saying:

“Family stuff. We could leave it at that.”

“This s–t ain’t easy,” Pitt added, noting that in most areas of his life, he’s “won the lottery.”
