Trump invites battleground Republicans to Rose Garden dinner

President Donald Trump has invited a group of GOP lawmakers including Republicans in competitive races to dine with him Wednesday night at the White House as many in the party press the president to unleash his massive war chest ahead of the November elections, according to five people with direct knowledge of the matter.

They, like others, were granted anonymity to discuss private planning. Wisconsin Rep. Derrick Van Orden confirmed the event in a brief interview with POLITICO.

“Of course,” Van Orden said when asked if he would go to the dinner. The White House plans to hold the dinner in the Rose Garden, according to two of the people who know about the invitation.

Other House Republicans in tough races who were invited and plan to attend include Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) and Georgia Senate nominee Rep. Mike Collins, along with a wider group of GOP lawmakers.

The White House invited at least several dozen lawmakers, according to two people familiar with the invitation list. The dinner also comes ahead of next week’s GOP midterm convention in Dallas, though attendance from Republican lawmakers is expected to be mixed. Barrett, for example, said in an interview Tuesday he is not planning to attend the convention and will instead campaign and spend time with his family. A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Republicans are facing mounting electoral headwinds from the war in Iran, higher gas prices and new tariffs as they fight to hold onto their narrow congressional majorities in November.

GOP incumbents are also eager for new infusions of resources to help dull Democrats’ attacks over voters’ cost-of-living concerns. Speaker Mike Johnson recently met with GOP megadonor Elon Musk, who has said he will spend millions to back the GOP again this cycle.

Trump’s political operation, MAGA Inc., has used little of its $400 million war chest to support GOP lawmakers. But he recently helped boost Sen. Darline Graham over the line in her heated primary, with the group spending more than $800,000 on phone calls and texts for the political newcomer.

Senate Republicans are eager for Trump to start spending for Ken Paxton in Texas as he has thus far been outspent on the airwaves by Democrat James Talarico and his allies.

The scheduled dinner comes the same day Securing American Greatness, the nonprofit arm of Trump’s operation, is launching its first major ad buy of the general election. One ad features UFC President Dana White praising Trump along with a clip from Trump’s State of the Union address in February.Another ad touts the tax cuts passed through Republicans’ domestic agenda bill last year, including “no tax on tips.” The ads are part of a nearly $1 million national TV reservation running over the next two weeks, per data tracking firm AdImpact. Both ads come as Trump advisers are reportedly planning to use his political organization to try and boost the president’s approval ahead of the midterms.

Amanda Knox: Comedy Show About Murder Case Draws Outrage From Victim’s Family

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Back in 2007, police in Italy arrested American student Amanda Knox following the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher.

After being wrongly convicted and imprisoned for four years, Knox was eventually exonerated.

Now, she’s revisiting the events of that year in a comedy show called Cartwheel — so named because of the claim that she did a cartwheel after being arrested.

And the Kercher family is failing to see the humor in the situation.

Amanda Knox attends Hulu's 'The Twisted Tale Of Amanda Knox' New York Premiere at New York Historical Society on August 19, 2025 in New York City.

“What I would say [to Knox] is to think about the family here, think about her friends and to turn the tables if it was your sister that this had happened to,” Meredith’s older sister, Stephanie Kercher, told the BBC this week.

That’s a pretty difficult request to ignore — particularly considering the tragedy at the center of the story.

Meredith was just 21 when she was found stabbed to death in the apartment she shared with Knox while the two were studying abroad in Italy.

Knox, however, insists the show isn’t making Meredith’s murder the punchline.

The former murder suspect says Cartwheel is instead about the experience of being publicly vilified and the challenges of explaining her past to her children.

“I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don’t joke about her murder,” Knox told the Telegraph (via Radar Online).

And while Knox insists she’s not joking about the murder itself, a petition calling for the show’s cancellation has reportedly collected more than 9,000 signatures.

Knox addressed the controversy on Instagram, explaining that Cartwheel is ultimately about motherhood, raising a daughter in what she describes as an unfair and dangerous world, and grappling with how much truth to tell her child.

She also claimed the production “honors Meredith Kercher’s memory and calls out the violence that was done to her and to me.”

Meredith’s family, however, may not see it quite that way.

Rudy Guede, an acquaintance of Knox and Kercher, was ultimately convicted of Meredith’s murder. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison and released in 2021 after serving 13 years.

For Knox, the case became the defining trauma of her young adulthood.

Now, nearly two decades after Meredith’s death, she’s attempting to reclaim the narrative through comedy.

Whether audiences are ready to laugh along is another question entirely.
