Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has a simmering Latino revolt on his hands. Quelling it could come down to Texas.
A group of Latino Democratic officials — including operatives and local and congressional leaders — are pushing Beshear, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, to pounce on late-breaking momentum in the Texas gubernatorial race, where Democrat Gina Hinojosa is vying to unseat incumbent GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.
The effort to get Beshear to expand the map comes as the DGA eyes several swing states — like Michigan, Arizona, Georgia or Nevada — where the party is focused on keeping or flipping governors’ mansions. But underlying it all is the Democratic Party’s fight to staunch the hemorrhaging of Latino voters from their ranks, and Texas sits at the center of their losses.
“One takeaway from 2024 is that Democrats writ large need to be a whole lot more bold when it comes to their approach, their strategy, their thinking,” said Sergio Gonzalez, one of the operatives involved in the effort to recruit DGA’s support who’s working with Latino candidates across the country. “How do [Democrats] build the coalition that it’s going to take for them to ultimately be successful? Gina is very much a part of that task.”
The Latino operatives and lawmakers made their case in a letter earlier this month asking the DGA to drop $10 million on Hinojosa’s race, pointing tomultiple polls that put the state representative within striking distance of Abbott. An investment from the DGA, they argued, could help make inroads with Latino voters and give Democrats what’s proved to be an elusive statewide victory in deep-red Texas.
Instead, the Latino coalition behind the letter said they got snubbed.
The DGA’s response to the letter, shared with the Latino organizers last Sunday and viewed by POLITICO, called Hinojosa an “outstanding candidate running a strong campaign,” and touted the work it’s already done investing in campaign staff and research in coordination with the campaign.
But the Latino leaders were ultimately disappointed by a lack of commitment from the DGA to financially boost Hinojosa. “We would be grateful for your help in raising the resources necessary to expand the map and go big in Texas,” the DGA wrote in its response. “We welcome your fundraising collaboration to support Gina’s campaign.”
The group said that after receiving the DGA’s response, they reached out to the organization and requested a meeting with Beshear, but they have not heard back.
The DGA, however, says it’s not taking anything off the table.
“The DGA is excited to be supporting Gina Hinojosa’s campaign for governor of Texas and has been working directly with her team since she’s launched,” DGA communications director Sam Newton said in a statement to POLITICO. “We’ve been in touch and have made clear we look forward to setting up a meeting to find a productive path forward.”
The DGA also has not ruled out investing in Hinojosa’s race, the organization told POLITICO.
“Gina Hinojosa is a great candidate and running a great campaign,” Beshear told POLITICO in a statement. “We are currently investing by paying expenses and recently providing staff. My goal as chair of the DGA this year is to win as many races as we can and that’s exactly what we’re doing by going on offense and expanding the map.”
Hinojosa said the DGA has been “a great partner since the beginning,” and that her campaign has a “good working relationship” with them. Asked if she believes they’ll spend for her in the final stretch, she said, “I sure hope they do.”
While Texas is a central focus of the fight Democrats and Republicans are waging to win the Latino vote, it’s states like Arizona and Nevada that have more competitive governor’s races — and are likely to showcase the influence of Latino voters in 2028. The DGA has made seven-figure investments in those states, running Spanish-language ads since May in Arizona. In their conference last week, Beshear announced a new “expand the map” fund to collect more resources to flip more seats, which could help races like Texas.
But the lack of assurances on whether the DGA will step in with a financial salve for Hinojosa has been cold comfort for the Latinos backing her. The result is what operatives called a “sweeping frustration” among their ranks at what they view as “dismissiveness” from the DGA.
“In just over a month, people will cast their first ballots in Texas. It’s not like we have tons of time to iron this out,” said Gonzalez, who helped organize the letter to the DGA.
Hinojosa’s race is rated likely Republican, and she is facing a significant fundraising disadvantage to Abbott. Texas is flooded with media markets among the most expensive in the country.
Yet the operatives argue Hinojosa presents one of the best Democratic opportunities in the state in years. And they believe her campaign could get a boost from voters turning out for Democrat James Talarico in the Senate race, as well as down-ballot candidates with high name identification like Bobby Pulido.
“What is especially egregious in this particular situation is that she was coming from behind,” Jess Rocketto, another Latino operative working closely with Latino candidates who helped coordinate the letter, told POLITICO. “Now that she has come up from behind, they still don’t want to invest. What is the DGA for in that case?”
And the operatives say the frustrations in Texas could ultimately land hardest on Beshear, who’s built a national profile as a Democrat able to flip a red-state governor’s seat held by an incumbent. He’s also been actively courting the Latino vote, collaborating frequently with top Latino creators like Carlos Eduardo Espina.
“We would really think, just to be honest with you, that Governor Beshear would understand this, especially given that he has presidential aspirations,” Gonzalez said. “It’s very important that he understand this.”
Another Latino operative who signed the letter, granted anonymity to speak candidly, argued Beshear will need these same Latinos if he moves to build a coalition for 2028. “He’s not being smart about his politics,” they said.
And in Texas, the operative warned that a failure to invest in Hinojosa now could not only make her uphill battle even harder, but it could also make it “next to impossible” to recruit a strong Latino candidate in the future.
“If they can’t show that they’re showing up for their people, Texas is written off for Democrats for a generation,” they said.

Kelly Clarkson gave a powerful nod to Dolly Parton during a recent private event for The Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Georgia, where she delivered an emotional rendition of the country music icon’s beloved classic, “I Will Always Love You.”
Taking the stage on September 11, Clarkson was backed by gentle instrumentation as she slowly began singing the tender ballad, giving the audience a chance to take in every word of the timeless song.

The singer appeared to be fully immersed in the performance as she closed her eyes and poured genuine emotion into the lyrics. Her powerhouse vocals handled the song’s difficult range with ease, showcasing the control and depth that she is known for.
Clarkson continued, gradually building the intensity before powerfully belting out the closing lyrics. Her impressive vocals were met with a roar of cheers from the crowd.
“And I will always love you/ I will always love you/ I will always love you/ I will always love you/ I will always love you/ I will always love you,” she sang.
According to videos shared by an employee present for the private concert experience, Clarkson’s set also included a slew of timeless hits from her early catalog, such as “Miss Independent,” “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” “Since U Been Gone,” “Because Of You” and “Breakaway.”

Clarkson’s performance of the Dolly Parton classic served as yet another tribute to the icon, following her passing on August 25. Like many other singer/songwriters, the Texas native took to social media after learning the tragic news to reflect on the impact Parton had on the world.
She wrote, “Dolly Parton had a way of making everyone feel special, and seen, and welcomed, and as if you were old friends. I will miss her heart and her voice as I am sure millions will. What an incredible gift and talent she was and still is with an amazing catalogue of art she has left behind for all of us.”
This wasn’t the first time Clarkson had sang “I Will Always Love You.” She has also previously covered it on her own show, The Kelly Clarkson Show,” which she officially said goodbye to on Monday, August 31.
After seven years on the air and more than 1,200 episodes, Clarkson announced she would be stepping away from the show to spend more time at home with her kids.
“It is a bittersweet day for all of us,” Clarkson said at the top of the show before later adding, “My kiddos have always come first, they’re a big reason I did this show… they’re also a big reason it’s time to say goodbye…I’m such a proud mama. They’re the greatest kiddos in the world.”
While Kelly Clarkson doesn’t have an official tour on the books, today it was announced that she will officially be returning to Stagecoach to perform on the Mane Stage in 2027.

Bruce Davis — a former Charles Manson lieutenant who spent more than five decades behind bars on murder charges — has died.
He was 83 years old.
Davis passed at 11:03 p.m. on September 11 at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, California, where he was incarcerated, according to sources and the Solano County Coroner’s Office (per TMZ).

A cause of death has not been released.
Although Davis was a prominent member of Manson’s inner circle, he was not present during the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders that left seven people dead, including actress Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski.
Instead, Davis was convicted for his involvement in the murders of Manson Family associate Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea.
Davis admitted to police that he attacked Shea with a knife. He also told investigators he was armed with a gun when Manson attacked Hinman with a sword.
The crimes eventually landed Davis in prison for life. Like other Manson Family members, he was originally facing a death sentence, but California’s abolition of the death penalty resulted in his sentence being commuted to life imprisonment.
And while Davis repeatedly sought parole over the years, his attempts ultimately went nowhere.
His most recent parole bid was denied in 2022. According to his attorney, Michael Beckman, a parole commissioner cited Davis’ “lack of empathy” when explaining the decision.
Davis also made headlines in 2024 when a scheduled parole hearing was postponed after he appeared on the podcast “The Lighter Side of Serial Killers.” He had previously written to host Keith Rovere in a 2023 Christmas card that he was “looking forward” to his upcoming parole hearing.
That hearing was ultimately moved to August 2024, when Davis was again denied parole. Manson himself died in 2017.
Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, offered a restrained response to news of Davis’ death.
“I always say a prayer upon their passing,” she told TMZ, referring to other Manson Family members who have died behind bars.
Tate added that her prayer asks that the deceased members “finally have clarity” about the actions they committed and that God have mercy on their souls.
Davis spent the final decades of his life incarcerated for crimes committed nearly 60 years ago.

The second week of the college football season gave us top-25 meltdowns, redemption and a comeback for the ages. Then-No. 4 Texas stunned formerly top-ranked Ohio State by coming back from down 20 points in the fourth quarter to win, Michigan responded to last week’s almost disastrous outcome by beating then-No. 11 Oklahoma at home and then-No. 6 Oregon was outplayed by an Oklahoma State team with a brand-new roster. It was a fun and wild weekend, complete with College Football Playoff and conference title ramifications. And with that, let’s get to it with our college football Week 2 superlatives. Austin was rocking on Saturday night as more than 100,000 fans packed Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in the hot, steamy late-summer air for a top-5 showdown between Texas and Ohio State. The sideline was star-studded, with Texas celebrities ranging from Matthew McConaughey to Kevin Durant. The Buckeyes looked like a team capable of winning the national championship in the first half, racing to a 20-3 halftime lead as the Longhorns turned the ball over early. Quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith were unstoppable, and Texas’ revamped defense had no answers for them. Ohio State remained in control until the fourth quarter, up until its 23-3 lead evaporated. Led by quarterback Arch Manning, Texas put together three drives spanning 40 plays and more than 14 minutes, scoring 21 points in the process. It all culminated in an epic 73-yard drive — we’ll get to that later — after a missed Buckeyes field goal that would have essentially sealed the game. Smith was targeted eight times in the first half, racking up 110 receiving yards and a touchdown. In the second, he was held to 54 yards. Sayin finished 17-of-32 for 278 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Manning went 23-of-37 for a touchdown and an interception. Both quarterbacks, who are in the Heisman Trophy conversation this season, were sacked twice. This was the third meeting between these non-conference opponents in less than two years, with Ohio State winning the first two. “We couldn’t lose to them again,” Manning told the broadcast postgame. “I had nightmares about that game last year.” Ohio State led Texas 23-17 late in the fourth quarter when kicker Connor Hawkins had a chance to all but close things out with a 45-yard field goal. Hawkins had been perfect up to that point, going 3-for-3 on the night, including a 48-yarder he made in the third quarter. But the kick sailed wide left, giving Texas good field position with 4:10 left and an opportunity to go down the field and win. Which is exactly what the Longhorns did. Manning, who had been inconsistent earlier, engineered a 73-yard game-winning drive that ended with NC State transfer running back Hollywood Smothers scoring on a one-yard touchdown run to give the home team a 24-23 victory. Ohio State had 25 seconds to get into field-goal range, but Sayin’s final heave was intercepted. This was undoubtedly one of the biggest wins in Steve Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas, and was the first time a Ryan Day team lost when leading by at least 20 points. In one week, Michigan went from needing one second added back to the clock to beat Western Michigan to stunning No. 11 Oklahoma, 17-10, at the Big House. It was a statement win for Kyle Whittingham in just his second game as the Wolverines’ head coach. Michigan was the underdog entering this game, with Oklahoma viewed as a favorite to make a second straight run to the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, who was shaky at best in Week 1, responded by leading the Wolverines with 111 passing yards and 87 rushing yards while adding a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. There had been some awkwardness earlier in the week when Whittingham said that Underwood is “our quarterback right now. It’s not something that’s infinite.” And when the signal-caller was asked about those comments, he said he hadn’t seen that but said, “It’s cool.” Doesn’t matter now — the Wolverines are feeling confident after knocking off Oklahoma and are 2-0. They’ll face UTEP next week before conference play begins. Meet Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who outplayed Oregon Heisman Trophy contender Dante Moore in a shocking 39-31 upset of No. 6 Oregon on Saturday. Mestemaker, who followed coach Eric Morris from North Texas to Oklahoma State, threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 109 yards and another score. He opened the game with a 75-yard run on the Cowboys’ first play from scrimmage and later soared into the end zone for a touchdown that quickly went viral. The quarterback, who is emerging as a top 2027 NFL Draft prospect, was swarmed by field stormers after the win. “Someone took my helmet,” Mestemaker said after the game. “I was getting, like, carried off the field by some cops to do some interview or something. It was wild. But I’m so glad we got that done, and I’m so glad the fans got to experience that, too.” Oregon had been a popular pick to win the national championship this season. After two weeks, that seems less likely. In Week 1, the Ducks got what coach Dan Lanning called a “wake-up call” when they needed to rally to beat Boise State in their home opener. In Week 2, the cracks became more apparent when they were outplayed by Oklahoma State in Stillwater and ended up on the wrong side of a field storm celebration. Moore went 14-of-29 for 191 yards and two touchdowns, but the offense managed only 281 total yards. Oregon had 12 first downs and was 5 of 14 on third down. As a team, the Ducks committed seven penalties to the Cowboys’ two. Entering the season, Oregon was considered to have one of the most talented rosters in program history. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, was expected to have more of a transitional year with a new coach in Morris and 92 new players on the roster. Yet that group snapped the Ducks’ 41-game win streak against unranked opponents. It’s not looking great in Eugene right now and Oregon is certainly in danger of missing the playoff if it doesn’t fix things. It’ll have to do it quickly with a Big Ten showdown against USC coming up in two weeks. There’s no question about this one: The biggest storyline entering Week 3 is Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford where No. 7 LSU visits No. 8 Ole Miss. In case you forgot — though, how could you?! — Kiffin left Ole Miss, where he coached from 2020-25 before last year’s CFP to take the head coaching job at LSU. Now, less than a year later, and in the third week of the season, he’ll take his new team on the road to play his old one. Kiffin isn’t a stranger to these awkward returns. He went back to Tennessee, where he coached for one season, when he was Alabama’s offensive coordinator and again when he was at Ole Miss. So he knows what to expect from angry fans who might shout or even throw things at him. He’ll be facing plenty of former players, too, including Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. This is the game of the week. And, by the way, it’s also a top-10 matchup.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports
