Kenny Chesney is opening up about his decision to keep politics out of his performances.
Over the past three decades, the superstar has built his career around bringing people together, saying his concerts are meant to serve as an escape from the noise of everyday life. Because of that, he says he’s chosen not to use his platform to tell fans how to think or vote.
During a recent conversation with Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast, Chesney explained that he has never felt it was his place to influence fans politically from the stage, noting that people are already surrounded by those conversations everywhere else.

“I’ve never saw it to be my place to use my stage or platform, no matter where I’m playing, to tell people how to think or how to vote,” he stated. “They hear that…They get that everywhere else. Everywhere, on every device, every network. They’re there as an escape from all that stuff.”
Chesney’s comments came after the conversation turned to Bruce Springsteen, who, like Maher, hails from New Jersey. Maher admitted he is a Springsteen fan but said he has started to view the outspoken singer through a more political lens.
“Now that starts to get to be a … It’s so funny. Everything has to be political now,” Maher said.
Chesney agreed and said, “I just refuse to do it. I was very thankful when I came on your show in November that you knew I didn’t want to talk about that.”
Of celebrities who are outspoken on their political views and hope to influence fans by talking politics, Chesney said stated, “There’s a certain ego, I think, that lives in there and a certain box inside your head and your soul that you have to check, for some reason, to think that you can make a difference.”
During his appearance, Chesney also discussed nearly 30 years without canceling a show, why he stopped drinking before performances, and his upcoming Sphere residency.

Chesney returned to the stage at the Sphere in Vegas over the weekend, opening his summer run with an epic show that included hits like “Young,” “Beer In Mexico,” and “Keg in the Closet,” and a surprise three-song performance with fellow superstar Eric Church.

Walker Montgomery’s current single, “I Don’t Think I Will,” carries an extra layer of meaning for him, as it’s a reimagined cover of a 1996 track originally recorded by James Bonamy. The song took on new life for Montgomery after he and his fiancée, Krista Slaubaugh, instantly connected with it and decided the original rendition would become their first dance at their upcoming wedding.
“I think we just listened to it and we were like, ‘Well, we like it.’ And she didn’t know it before I discovered it, because I’m just always in the 90s deep cuts and stuff like that. But yeah, we liked it and kind of decided on the spot, ‘alright, well this is going to be the song,’” Montgomery told Country Now.

The “Saving The Honky Tonks” singer decided to put his own spin on the track, reimagining it with the same slow-burning, nostalgia-filled tune. He finds himself telling the story about a man who hears a voice in his heart telling him he has found “the one,” someone he knows, “absolutely, positively, without a doubt,” he can’t live without.
“I just thought it was a good time to do a little rerecording and see what I can do with it,” he notes.
Montgomery preserves the emotional sentiment of the original while delivering it through his own rich baritone, singing from a deeply personal place that reflects his own chapter of falling in love with one half of the country music duo, Tigirlily Gold.
“I could just do what I’ve done before/ Blame it all on the moon/ Say it’s nothing more/ Than the pull of the tide/ And it’s gonna pass/ But something’s telling me/ This time it’s gonna last/ I could close my eyes and just pretend I don’t feel the way I feel/ But oh no, I don’t think I will,” he sings with pure love echoing through each note.
The track marks a very meaningful moment in their relationship, especially as wedding planning ramps up ahead of their October ceremony. Montgomery shared that while he has left most of the planning up to his soon-to-be wife, Krista, he knows that they have picked out their wedding colors and decided on the perfect looks for their big day.
“I know enough to be dangerous. I see the prices for it and I’m like, ‘oh my God.’ That’s what I know about it,” he joked.
The singer/songwriter did however take charge in planning out their honeymoon in Hawaii. This will mark the first time that both of them have gotten to visit the tropical destination.
“We’re doing a luau because she wants to live like her Lilo and Stitch dreams, right? And I’m going to see Pearl Harbor,” he explained while talking highlights on their itinerary.
He also revealed one very special wedding tradition they are going to be taking part in.
“We will bury a bottle of bourbon, which is like a Kentucky thing. I don’t know when we unbury it, I guess after we’re married, but yeah, that’s probably like the tradition thing that we’re doing. But it’s family and friends and just kind of hanging out and then just fly to Hawaii.”

The couple’s love story began in the fall of 2023 when Montgomery very openly admitted to being attracted to Krista while speaking with fans before a show in Kansas City, Missouri. They went out on their first date just a few short weeks later and both felt an immediate connection. By Valentine’s Day, Krista was already sure Montgomery was the one for her.
The lovebirds were on a surprise getaway to North Carolina on Monday, May 26 when he finally popped the question. Looking back on the moment, Krista told PEOPLE she felt nothing but “excitement and joy.” She explained they have known for “awhile now” that they wanted to be together forever and she “couldn’t have imagined” a more perfect way for them to cement their future.
Walker added, “Almost immediately afterwards the sun started shining down on the dock by the pond that we were standing on. It was perfect!”
In the midst of all the excitement in his personal life, Walker Montgomery has also entered a new chapter of his career. After spending the majority of his time pursing music in Nashville, he has officially signed with Red Street Records in an effort to take things to the next level.
“I felt like we had kind of taken it to a spot where we had kind of plateaued just being by ourselves and we needed that missing piece of the team,” he explained. “They showed up and it’s been great. I mean, they love the traditional country sound and they’re not trying to change anything. So it’s been fun.”
Montgomery shared that new music will be coming very soon and due to his current season of life fans can expect plenty of love songs on the way.
He also launched his first headline tour this year, the Saving The Honky Tonks Tour, which ran throughout April and May. Montgomery is proud to say that fans have exceeded his expectations in showing up to support his shows this year.
“It’s great. I mean, it’s the first time that we kind of said, ‘Alright, hope people show up,’” he said of his headline run. “And luckily they have. That makes it a lot better. But no, it’s been awesome. Just going out to those little honky-tonk ballroom, dance halls down in Texas and Oklahoma and everything. So it’s been good. It’s been a fun experience.”
There are plenty more chances for fans to catch Montgomery live throughout the summer at various fairs and festivals. On Tuesday, June 23, the rising star will perform at 27LIVE Powered by Country Now. Details HERE.

Country music icon Clint Black describes himself, his wife Lisa Hartman Black, and their only daughter Lily Pearl Black as a “tight little trio.” Over the years, they’ve shared their love of music and entertainment through various projects and celebrated life’s biggest milestones together. But behind the spotlight, Black says they’ve always tried to be a normal family.
Speaking with Country Now, Black explained that despite careers in the entertainment industry, he and Lisa made a conscious effort to raise Lily as “regular parents.” They showed up for the important moments, attended high school events, sat in the stands at volleyball games, and embraced the everyday responsibilities of parenthood just like any other mom and dad. Of course, there were a few reminders that Lily’s life wasn’t entirely the same as her peers.
“She sort of knew something was going on over there, but it was never a thing. And then when Dierks Bentley shows up at the house and Trace Atkins, then she starts to think, ‘Well, what’s going on here?’ Or I’m telling a story about jamming with George Harrison and The Beatles, ‘Who are you?’” Black jokes.

Lily Pearl recently turned 25 and has been learning to navigate her own path of success as an emerging country music singer and songwriter. She has already crossed off several major career moments like playing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, releasing her debut EP, and frequently joining her parents on tour. It’s safe to say that Clint Black is a very proud father watching his daughter grow up and pursue her dreams.
“It’s an emotional rollercoaster,” he noted. “I knew she had a great voice. We loved her singing voice. I got her with the voice coach I worked with years ago and she said, ‘Clint, she has a second break,’ meaning where my voice ends, if I could keep going up like Mariah Carey, that would be the equivalent. So he’s telling me that she has an extraordinary vocal range, great ear for when something is pitch.’”
Once they saw the incredible potential she had in music, Black hoped that she would also pick up songwriting in order to experience that indescribable joy he says that songwriters get when they pen a song from nothing.
“[I’m] talking to Lisa about it and saying, ‘I know I really want her to try to write songs. ‘And Lisa’s telling me, ‘Hey, if she can’t, that’s fine. A lot of singers don’t write their songs.’ And I went, ‘Yeah, but I want mine to.’ And so one day she did. She wrote a song and it wasn’t great, just like my first song, but I could see it. I could see the poet in her. And I went to Lisa, almost tears in my eyes, just happy for my daughter.”

Lily has come a long way since that first song. Even though her father might be slightly biased, it’s easy to agree that she is now writing “really, really good songs.”
“I can’t even come up with the words. Seeing her playing, one of her friends sent us a video of her singing her original songs at a songwriter round at a bar where quite a few people were just talking while she’s playing and singing. And I saw myself in all those years I spent in the bars as a soloist and it just brought so much joy just seeing her in the struggle for what she loves to do and knowing that she is on that path, it’s a big deal,” he explained.
Through it all, the “A Better Man” singer says the biggest constant has been the way they continue to show up for one another, whether it’s cheering Lily on in her early songwriting journey or celebrating major milestones together as a family. That support was on full display earlier this year when he, Lisa, and Lily gathered at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to celebrate the opening of Clint Black: The Hard Way On Purpose, an exhibition that will remain on display through August 2027. While seeing his career honored in such a prestigious way was meaningful, Black admits his favorite part of the experience was watching Lily take it all in for the first time.
With touring and other commitments keeping all three of them busy, Clint Black says there aren’t any family trips in the books for this summer. However, he knows the family will find time to reconnect whenever possible.
“Nothing big planned, but we always come together on the breaks and do something,” he shared.
The recent trip to New York served as a reminder that the they don’t need an elaborate vacation to make good memories together. Between helping promote his new memoir Killin’ Time: My Life and Music, visiting various bookstores, sharing meals, and exploring the city, Clint, Lisa, and Lily turned a work trip into quality family time.
Clint Black’s memoir is available now. Fans can also watch him and Lisa in When I Said I Do, the new Lifetime movie inspired by the couple’s beloved duet of the same name. Plus, Black is on the road for his Back on The Blacktop Tour with dates running through November.
