Love stories don’t always come with a fairytale ending and unfortunately, that’s a reality Harper Grace had to learn through a first-hand experience. In her new song, “if daddy says no,” the rising star finds herself torn between choosing forever with someone and waiting for her dad’s approval.
During the process of writing the gentle, airy tune alongside Kyle Schlienger and Scott Stepakoff, Grace believed she was in love with the man who would one day be her husband. The only problem, her father would not give his blessing. and growing up in Texas, his approval was very important to her.
She eventually took a bird’s eye view of the situation and realized that if she went against her father’s wishes and ran off with the supposed man of her dreams, she might be setting herself up for a very unhappy life.
“I’ve always been really close with my dad, and this certain relationship just did not honor me, and it really didn’t honor my dad. They had zero respect for my father and his upbringing with me and him, literally just let alone being my dad. He was a wonderful dad, and this guy just was so disrespectful, and I was caught up in all of it. Luckily, I’m so grateful that my dad really did say no,” she told Country Now.
Those real-life emotions that she experienced while trying to make the decision for herself unfold throughout this song in a very raw way. Even though the story doesn’t directly reveal how things ultimately turned out with her dad, she lets the audience inside the internal battle she was facing in that moment.
The Texas native delivers lines about her other half being “kind, stubborn and wise” and then states that he actually reminds her of her dad, making the conflict at hand even harder. She gathers the facts from both sides and then runs through the two possible scenarios in her head: running off into the sunset with the person she loves, or trusting her dad’s opinion and waiting until that approval comes with the right person.
That emotional tension hits hardest in the chorus, where she admits she feels “damned if I do, damned if I don’t.”
“We could run away in the sunset/ He don’t even need to know/ But I want him to walk me in a white dress/ Give my hand for you to hold/ I see forever/ for worse or for better/ But I can’t say I will if he won’t/ So I’m Damned If I Do/ Damned if I Don’t/ If daddy says no,” she sings.
By the second verse, the song adds another layer of depth as Grace tries to understand if her father’s resistance comes from pride or fear that she’ll repeat his mistakes. As her soft-edged vocals float over the intimate and heavy narrative of a heart torn between love and approval, she leaves the story in that unresolved space, making it feel even more relatable.
When listening to the lyrics closely, some might notice similarities between “if daddy says no” and Taylor Swift’s classic, “Love Story,” but Grace offers a different take on the modern-day fairytale theme. Instead of running away with the man despite her family’s wishes, as the story unfolds in Swift’s tale, she steps back from the relationship out of respect for the people she loves. That thoughtful approach makes it clear she’s not rebelling, she’s trying to understand both sides of her heart.
Grace acknowledged that the comparisons between the two tracks did come to mind, back when she performed the song live while opening for Josh Turner.
“I had said on stage one day…I said, it’s like the version of ‘Love Story’ instead of the romance of like, he’s going to get down on one knee and all this stuff is going to happen. It’s like a different perspective of it. It’s what if he says no, that matters so much, rather than this big old love story all happening right in front of your eyes. It’s like the traumatic sad side. But yeah, it definitely played in my head a little bit once I had written the song and had played it out a couple times.”
In order to promote “if daddy says no,” Harper Grace shocked fans with news that she was engaged. She teased a mystery man, sported a stunning diamond on her finger and even dressed in white while discussing wedding preparations. The truth is, it was all fake. Grace cleverly planned this promo tease so fans would be transported into the exact mindset as her when she wrote the tune.
“I think some people are probably going to think I’m crazy for faking my own engagement. But honestly, I got so into just the artistic take on it because the song means so much to me. I wanted to put myself in the position of how I thought it could have played out if I went that route,” she explained. “I had this reoccurring nightmare in the midst of the relationship with this guy where he would be down on one knee asking me to marry him, and I would freeze up and I wouldn’t know what to say. And that should have been my telltale sign a long time ago to peace out and leave. The Lord was probably speaking prophetically in my dream saying, get out.”
It all led up to the just-released music video, which features her real dad as well as a “really close friend” playing the role of her love interest, and the man fans thought she was engaged to. Anyone who paid close attention to the teasers across social media may have noticed that she has been dropping little puzzle pieces that tie the whole story together.
“I don’t want to downplay anybody’s real engagement or anybody’s real call-off of an engagement or anyone’s real wedding…I want to be married, I want to be a wife, I want to be a mom. I really, really desire a spouse one day. But with this song in particular, I was like, I want to play into this creative, vulnerable, artistic side as much as I possibly can, and what better way than to fake my engagement? So that’s what I did.”
She jokingly added that the next time anyone sees a ring on her finger, it will be real because while she too has dreams of getting married and becoming a wife one day, she’s holding out until the right person comes along who both she, and her father approves of.
The new song sets the tone for more music to come, as Harper Grace is currently working on her debut album.
“I think it is a perfect picture of what’s to come because I feel like each song individually is a page being physically ripped out and some of the pages have some hardships and a little bit of blood on that page, or there’s a little bit of love on another page, and all of these pieces that are really being ripped out, is kind of what is all coming together.”

Emmy Russell, granddaughter of the late Loretta Lynn, is expecting her second child.
The former American Idol standout shared the exciting news on her official social media accounts Thursday (Feb. 26), writing, “Secret’s out!! Baby #2.”
In the announcement video, Emmy looks at the camera while holding a positive pregnancy test and whispers, “I have a surprise.” She then walks over to her daughter, Taylor Raydiant Ward, and hands her the test.
Moments later, she calls in her husband, Tyler Ward, announcing, “Dada! We’ve got a surprise.” As Tyler approaches, he asks, “What does she have?” When he realizes the news, he bursts with excitement, scoops up their daughter, and rushes to embrace Emmy.
The video closes with a sweet family photo, showing the little family smiling alongside the positive pregnancy test, celebrating the joyful announcement.
Emmy and Tyler welcomed their daughter, Taylor, on January 31, 2025 after a turbulent 36 hour labor. Following the birth, Emmy learned she had lost 1.6 liters of blood in the process, but thankfully she and baby Taylor were okay.
“I was really out of it because I was losing so much blood, and so I wasn’t really able to lift her my entire time at the hospital,” she shared at the time. “But every time that I did get the chance to…that’s your child, it just melts your heart. I didn’t really know that kind of love existed.”
Months later, the new parents took to social media to ask for prays for Taylor as she had been experiencing a bout of infantile spasms and had to be hospitalized. Doctors kept her for monitoring and an electroencephalogram (EEG), a test that tracks the brain’s electrical activity to help detect epilepsy or other neurological conditions.
“She’s been having these spasms, kind of just like she’s falling almost,” Emmy explained. “And yeah, they were just really concerned about it and wanting to do some, just checking how her brain is and everything. So pray for answers because we really want answers.”
Emmy later offered fans an update on her daughter, writing, “Lots of people have been asking.. haven’t posted much about it.. we have Taylor’s checkup soon, she is looking amazing! I pray she will just grow out of this completely! It really does have to do with the underlying cause. We did genetics there were a couple variants but nothing that would be a reason for this. ‘No known cause.’ It’s developmental, so it’s one of those things just to keep an eye on. She has been without medicine (steroid) for a while now! She is responding!! smiling, sticking out her tongue, babbling, still not crawling, no spasms, great eye contact, laughing, smiling. A lot of things she wasn’t doing is back! Thank you for your continued prayers.”
It appears Taylor is now thriving according to Emmy’s latest updates.
Along with announcing Taylor’s birth in early 2025, Emmy and Tyler revealed that they had secretly tied the knot in a small, last-minute ceremony in the comfort of a living room, and kept all planning on the “down-low.”
“Emmy and I had been together for a while, and her heart was just like, ‘I want to be married.’ And then I’m like, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever be married,’” Ward admitted to People. “And then you think about losing someone that you become best friends with and tight with and you’re like, ‘Maybe that’s what it is. Maybe that’s what marriage is. It’s just like, I don’t want this person out of my life.’”
