As we previously reported, a man named John Davidson shouted a racial slur at Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo during Sunday night’s BAFTA Awards.
Davidson has dealt with Tourette’s Syndrome for most of his life, and he was in the audience because a film based on his life was up for several awards.
Like many people with Tourette’s, Davidson suffers from coprolalia, which is defined as “the involuntary, uncontrollable, and often loud utterance of obscene words, derogatory remarks, or socially inappropriate phrases.”
In other words, Davidson is unable to control his outbursts, and last night’s slurs were involuntary.
But that hasn’t stopped thousands of social media users and a few public figures from criticizing both Davidson and the BAFTA organizers for their alleged mishandling of the situation.
One such public figure is Jamie Foxx, who took to social media to express his frustration.
“Out of all the words you could’ve said Tourette’s makes you say that?” Foxx wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“Nah, he meant that sh-t,” Foxx continued (per TMZ), adding, “Unacceptable.”
Davidson excused himself from the ceremony, and host Alan Cummings promptly issued an apology to the audience.
“Tourette Syndrome is a disability, and the tics you’ve heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette Syndrome has no control over their language,” Cummings said, adding:
“We apologize if you are offended tonight.”
Earlier today BAFTA organizers issued their own apology:
“We take full responsibility for putting our guests in a very difficult situation and we apologize to all,” the organization said in a statement.
“We will learn from this, and keep inclusion at the core of all we do, maintaining our belief in film and storytelling as a critical conduit for compassion and empathy,” the statement continued.
“We would like to thank him for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him.”
In his own statement, Davidson said that he is “deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.”
“I was in attendance to celebrate the film of my life, I Swear, which, more than any film or TV documentary, explains the origins, condition, traits, and manifestations of Tourette Syndrome,” he continued.
Clearly, Davidson is horrified by the events of last night. This is obviously a very sensitive subject, but we hope that everyone involved can eventually find some sort of closure.

Beauty influencer Maria Rita Rodrigues da Silva has tragically passed away.
She was only 25 years old.
Fans, friends, and family are all reacting with shock. She had seemed fine, posting just days before.

Thousands are now mourning Maria Rita
On Saturday, February 21, Brazilian beauty influencer Maria Rita Rodrigues da Silva died.
Her parents first broke the news, sharing a message to her Instagram followers.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter Maria Rita,” they wrote.
In a separate post, her heartbroken parents shared: “Unfortunately, Maria suffered a sudden illness and left us.”
Maria Rita had over 65,000 followers on TikTok, and over 11,000 on Instagram.
What was her cause of death?
Unfortunately, we do not yet know how Maria Rita died.
The sudden medical emergency sounds like almost a given, but would seem to rule out certain causes — such as homicide or a vehicular collision.
At 25, a seemingly spontaneous medical emergency would be extraordinary, but obviously not unheard of.
20-somethings can develop cancers (just as young children can). They can also have congenital heart defects that go undetected.
Adults can also discover (or develop) serious, even deadly allergies.
In life, Maria Rita made a name for herself as a beauty and fashion influencer.
From São Bernardo do Campo, she shared ample selfies.
Her fashion content included GRWM (Get Ready With Me) videos that featured elaborate wardrobes.
In fact, she would also list and itemize the components of her ensembles so that followers could try out her looks for herself.
Maria Rita shared updates on her figure. She also moonlit as a travel vlogger, documenting her trips to Peru and Uruguay.
Maria Rita’s funeral took place on Sunday, February 22 — one day before she was laid to rest in her hometown.
Lígia, a friend of hers, wrote a tribute: “She was always such a lovely person during her time with me in the sewing and pattern-making studio at Fine Arts. I’m so very sorry.”
Another, Jéssica, penned: “She was such a bright soul, always smiling, with a charisma like no other. Wherever she went, she won everyone over with her warmth and charm.”
Luana Lilian shared an Instagram tribute to Maria, also praising her for her charm and calling her the “prettiest redhead girl.”
This was a young woman who was full of life and loved by so many before her sudden passing.
She will be missed
Maria’s latest post came only two days before her passing.
On Thursday, February 19, she showed off a new pair of sunglasses.
Without knowing what happened in the subsequent two days, we are at a loss to explain her death.
Hopefully, her parents and other loved ones will receive the answers that can give them a sense of closure.
For now, the grief is raw. It will never go away, but the reality is likely just sinking in.

It’s been over two months since Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home.
Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested for their murders, and today, he finally appeared in court for his arraignment.
Nick entered a plea of not guilty, as expected.
But what might be more noteworthy is the 32-year-old’s appearance and demeanor in the courtroom.
Observers described Nick as “gaunt” and “disheveled.”

To the surprise of many, he is still being represented by a public defender, Kimberley Greene.
Greene took over after famed defense attorney Alan Jackson abruptly withdrew from the case ahead of Nick’s first scheduled arraignment last month (that arraignment was eventually rescheduled).
It was widely expected that Reiner would replace her with a more experienced (and expensive) lawyer, but now it looks as though he might be sticking with Greene.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 29.
Nick had been undergoing treatment for various mental health issues — including schizophrenia — for years ahead of the murders.
Insiders claim that in the weeks leading up to the murders, Nick’s doctors changed his medication after he complained of weight gain.
Unfortunately, the new meds caused Nick to behave more erratically than usual.
Sources close to the family claim that his parents — whom he lived with — were afraid of him toward the end of their lives.
The situation came to a head at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien, a friend and neighbor of the Reiners’.
Witnesses say, Nick — who attended the party with his parents — was rude to the other guests, and he became irate with his father when Rob attempted to check his behavior.
The following afternoon, the Reiners’ daughter found them stabbed to death.
Nick’s plea of not guilty did not come as a surprise, but legal experts are predicting that he will not deny that he committed the crimes.
Not guilty by reason of insanity is notoriously difficult to prove, but experts believe that Nick might have a chance due to how well-documented his history of mental illness is.
If the jury finds in his favor, he would likely be forced to spend the rest of his life in a psychiatric hospital, but he would probably prefer that outcome to prison.
