Joe Manganiello is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.
But despite his many years in the spotlight, the photogenic star has managed to keep a tight lid on the details of his personal life.
That’s about to change, thanks to a new memoir in which Manganiello opens up about his private struggles, including a series of health issues that nearly claimed his life.
In newly published excerpts from Bloodlines, Joe reveals that he endured a devastating seven-year battle with autoimmune-related illnesses that attacked multiple parts of his body and ultimately resulted in a life-saving organ amputation.
According to a synopsis for the book, Manganiello’s health began deteriorating after what he describes as a “cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses” affected his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system.
The actor reportedly suffered chronic pain, multiple medical crises, and a prolonged struggle that left doctors unable to provide clear answers about what was happening to him.
The health battle eventually led to a life-saving organ amputation, though Manganiello has not publicly disclosed which organ was removed.
In a statement to People magazine, Manganiello reflected on the experience and the toll it took on him.
“It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure,” he said.
The 49-year-old explained that his search for answers eventually extended beyond traditional medicine.
After doctors were unable to determine the cause of his illnesses, Manganiello turned to alternative paths that included spiritual exploration, genealogy research, ancient myths, and other unconventional practices.
That journey reportedly led him to uncover stories about his ancestors, including relatives who survived the Armenian genocide and family members who also struggled with chronic illness.
Manganiello says the process of writing Bloodlines helped him make sense of the suffering he endured and gave him a new perspective on his life.
He expressed hope that readers facing their own challenges may find encouragement in his story and discover that healing can exist on the other side of even the darkest struggles.
The memoir is scheduled for release in October and promises to explore not only Joe’s medical ordeal but also his rise to stardom, his sobriety, and his failed marriage to Sofia Vergara.
Fans of Manganiello’s who are just now learning about his health issues will hopefully appreciate the reminder that some of the toughest battles are the ones fought away from the spotlight.

Big Tigger, the longtime Atlanta radio personality and former host of BET’s Rap City, has been arrested on battery and child cruelty charges.
According to Fulton County Jail records, Tigger — whose real name is Darian Morgan — was taken into custody on Saturday and booked on charges of battery and third-degree cruelty to children.
He was later released after posting a $10,000 bond.
The arrest comes just weeks after Morgan’s wife, Alicia Brown, publicly accused him of physically assaulting her during a domestic dispute.
Brown shared photos and videos on social media that appeared to show injuries she allegedly sustained during the incident. According to previous reports, she was later transported to a hospital for treatment.
At the time, Morgan strongly denied the allegations.
His attorney told TMZ that the claims being made against the radio host were false.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the charges filed this weekend stem from the same alleged incident involving Brown.
For now, many details remain unclear.
What is known is that Morgan, a fixture in Atlanta radio and a familiar face to hip-hop fans from his years hosting Rap City, is now facing serious criminal charges that could have significant legal consequences.
On June 12, Morgan shared a social media post in which he addressed the allegations made by Brown.
“I want to say categorically these allegations and accusations that have been circulating about me are false, untrue, not happening, didn’t happen,” he said.
Neither Morgan nor his representatives have publicly commented on the arrest since the charges were filed.
On Monday, Morgan took to social media to share a message reading, “Life is a cruel teacher… She loves to give you the test first, and the lesson later.”

More than a decade after Whitney Houston’s tragic death, Oprah just shared a heartbreaking story that the public never knew about.
During an appearance at the Cannes Lions Festival this week, Oprah recalled a frightening moment from Houston’s final visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009.
According to the Queen of Daytime Talk, Whitney had already completed a powerful interview discussing her struggles with addiction and her hopes for the future.
But things took a troubling turn when it came time for the singer to perform.
Oprah revealed that Houston was sober when they conducted their backstage conversation before the interview.
By the time she returned to the stage to sing, however, Oprah says that had changed.
“The first interview I did with her when we’d gone behind stage and I asked about her intentions, she was clean,” Oprah recalled.
“But the day she came to my show to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage.”
The revelation stunned the audience at Cannes, as the incident was never reported at the time and remained a closely guarded secret for nearly 17 years.
Oprah explained that she immediately feared what would happen if images or videos of the fall became public.
Houston was attempting a comeback at the time, promoting her album I Look to You and openly discussing her past struggles with substance abuse.
“I knew that if that story got out that she’d fallen off the stage, that she would be completely destroyed by that,” Oprah said.
Despite the fact that audience members had cameras and could have easily shared photos, Oprah says she personally appealed to them not to do so.
“Even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures up because it would ruin her life, and they did not,” she said.
Oprah added that she doubts such a request would be honored in today’s social media landscape.
“That would not happen today, I can tell you that,” she said.
Yes, the world is a very different place in 2026, and we mostly mean that in a bad way.
These days, footage of Whitney’s stumble almost certainly would have wound up online, and the comments section would have immediately devolved into the most vile culture war nonsense.
Oprah’s compassion toward her troubled friend reminds us all of a time when Americans were generally far more empathetic than they are today — a time that we can hopefully return to someday soon.
