After Trump intervention, Balogun plays vs. Belgium

American forward Folarin Balogun will start tonight for the USMNT against Belgium in the World Cup last-16 knockout match. Balogun was sent off in the previous round against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was due to serve a one-match suspension tonight — before world football governing body FIFA unusually lifted the ban following an effort from Trump administration officials.

Maine’s Democratic Party leadership calls on Platner to drop out following POLITICO report

The leaders of Maine’s Democratic Party are calling on Senate candidate Graham Platner to withdraw from the race, after POLITICO reported Monday that a woman who he dated said he forced her to have sex with him.

Their call for Platner’s exit is notable, given the state party has the ability to replace him on the ballot, should he choose to drop out before the July 13 deadline outlined in Maine law. Leaders would then need to select his replacement by July 27.

“The Maine Democratic Party leadership stands with women and survivors, and that principle does not bend based on party affiliation,” Chair Charlie Dingman, Vice Chair Imke Schessler and Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson said in a joint statement posted to social media.

Maine Democrats join several prominent party members — including former Platner supporters Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) — in pushing for the progressive oysterman to drop out or condemning his actions after POLITICO reported new allegations of him sexually assaulting a former partner.

Platner has denied the accusation, saying that the allegations are “troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.” However, he also said on social media that he was “taking the time to reflect” on his candidacy.

Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old Maine resident, had told POLITICO that Platner entered her home uninvited five years ago and forced himself on her despite her repeatedly telling him to stop. She said she cut off contact with him after telling him that his actions that night were not consensual.

“We are entrusted with deciding who represents our values and who carries our banner,” Dingman, Schessler and Murphy-Anderson wrote in the Monday statement. “That responsibility requires judgment, leadership, and a willingness to act when circumstances demand it.”

The Maine Democratic leaders said it is their “responsibility to hold every candidate who seeks to represent our state to the highest standard” and that it is imperative the party defeats GOP Sen. Susan Collins in November.

“This Senate race comes at a pivotal moment in the struggle against a government, supported by Senator Collins, that serves the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of ordinary Maine people,” they wrote. “It is essential that we refocus this campaign on that struggle.”

Other prominent Maine Democrats — including state Senate President Mattie Daughtry — called on Platner to exit.

“Sexual violence has absolutely no place in our society, and it cannot be tolerated from those seeking our highest positions of power,” Daughtry said on X. “To that end, I am calling on Mr. Platner to withdraw his candidacy immediately. Maine deserves a nominee for U.S. Senate with the dignity, judgment, and personal character this seat demands.”

Belgium’s complicated language politics, explained

Belgium recognizes three official languages: Dutch, which is dominant in Flanders; French, spoken in Wallonia; and German, spoken by a distinct community of around 70,000 people along the country’s eastern border.

Much of Belgian public life, including education, health care and the media, is organized separately along these linguistic lines. International sport is a notable exception, providing one of the few occasions when Belgians — regardless of whether they speak Dutch, French or German — rally behind the same flag.

Belgian soccer is “a sharp contrast to how the country is organized politically and culturally” Jeroen Scheerder, professor of sports politics and sports sociology at KU Leuven told POLITICO, adding that aside from chocolate, beer and the King, he struggles to “list any other aspects of life with which people identify to feel like a Belgian … I call it the 90 minutes of nationalism.”

Professor Jef Brouwers, who worked as performance psychologist under former Belgium coach Roberto Martínez between 2015 and 2018, agreed.

“The team is one the few things that cuts through the linguistic barriers,” he said. “You cannot participate as a Flemish athlete or as a Walloon athlete or a Brussels athlete. We have those three governments, but you cannot participate in one of those shirts.”

Roughly half of Belgium’s national soccer team, the Red Devils, are native French speakers, while the other half speak Dutch as their first language. Yet communication has rarely posed a problem because English has become the team’s neutral working language.

“There are French- and Flemish-speaking (players), so it’s the habit, the necessity to speak English … when (the coach) is talking, giving an explanation on the game plan, he will speak in English so that everybody can understand,” Brouwers said.

Language, therefore, has never become a major point of contention within the squad.

“I’m quite sure they don’t even think about the language,” Brouwers said. “It is absolutely not a point of attention.”

Scheerder said the arrangement comes naturally because most Belgian internationals already use English in their club soccer careers.

“Most of (the players) if not all of them are quite familiar with (English). Most of them are playing abroad in international clubs … so its not really an issue or a topic,” he added.

If Belgium’s linguistic divide is not an issue during training and after kick-off, there is one moment when it becomes impossible to ignore: the national anthem.

Belgium has not one but four official versions of “La Brabançonne”: French, Dutch and German versions, as well as a multilingual version that alternates between the three languages. Of course, using English as a neutral language provides no solution here!

Fans watching closely during World Cup matches may notice that the lyrics displayed on stadium screens are shown in three rows — one for each official language.

Players and fans can choose which line to sing, meaning that multiple different versions of the same song are being sung at the same time.

Some players, including Kevin De Bruyne, the superstar from Ghent in Flanders, often do not sing the lyrics at all. Scheerder said this is “not at all a statement” and may even reflect a desire to avoid choosing between Belgium’s different official languages.

So, while the Red Devils may spend 90 minutes speaking the same language as their American opponents on the pitch, they begin the evening with a uniquely Belgian chorus: one anthem, three languages — and no single unified version everyone sings.

The End For Ronaldo: 4 Takeaways From Spain’s Win vs. Portugal In The Round Of 16

On Monday, a battle between Iberian neighbors, Portugal and Spain, came to Dallas for a spot in the quarterfinals. It was a matchup of UEFA giants and extreme talent as the past decades of iconic excellence, Cristiano Ronaldo, met the present and future of the game, Lamine Yamal. It was also the first meeting between two top-five FIFA-ranked nations at the World Cup ahead of the final eight since 2014, when Germany won 4-0 against Portugal in the group stage. In the end, it was Spain who pulled it out thanks to a late goal from Mikel Merino. Just like 12 years ago, Portugal sadly bowed out. And Ronaldo had his last dance. Here are my takeaways. 1. Ronaldo’s Incredible World Cup Journey Comes To An End The Portuguese superstar became the first player to score in six different World Cup editions, which is just an astonishing record. He also became the oldest player to play (41 years, 147 days) and score in a knockout match, and his penalty against Croatia was his first-ever goal in the knockout stages. But sadly, the trophy never came. And that was it. A tremendous, world-class icon whose longevity can only be admired. Even if the silverware on the biggest stage never materialized. Goodbye, Ronaldo. Thanks for the memories. 2. Tremendous Tournament From Diogo Costa The Porto goalkeeper was fantastic in this tournament and kept Spain out for a large part of the day. He made three key saves in the first half, including some impressive, reactionary saves from Lamine Yamal, and added two more in the second. As Spain continued to push, it was Portugal’s stopper who kept La Roja away from taking the lead until Merino netted the stoppage-time winner. You can’t blame the keeper for the loss; he did his part. 3. But Unai Simón, My Goodness More than 200 minutes of keeping a clean sheet, including today’s performance. There’s a reason why he’s Spain’s no. 1 and keeping Arsenal’s David Raya at bay. We always talk a lot about Spain’s formidable attacking fluidity, but from a goalkeeping perspective, the Athletic Club stopper is such an important factor for Luis de la Fuente. 4. Great Battle Between Yamal And Mendes … Until The Latter Exited This was clearly the battle of the day as the PSG full back and the Barcelona star clashed once again. Yamal has said that Nuno Mendes is the toughest opponent he has ever faced, and rightly so, as he is arguably the best left back in the world. Tonight in Dallas, the matchup was a balanced clash, and the Portuguese full back was keeping Yamal at bay until the 56th minute, when he had to come off after picking up an injury. In the end, it was Yamal who came out victorious as Spain won.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports

What’s up with Edgecumbe?

My name is Kadyn Cross, and my hometown is Koyuk, Alaska, which is located in the Bering Strait Region. I’m an upcoming 3rd-year student at Mount Edgecumbe High School and the Student Body President for the coming school year. I serve on the temporary ad hoc committee for the school. I’ve been highly involved in aspects of school life, decisions and processes — and have testified in front of state lawmakers in the House and Senate Education Committees while they discussed MEHS. I’ve seen what’s happened firsthand at Edgecumbe, and wish to make others aware of what the situation is actually like.

This last year, Mt. Edgecumbe High School has faced a year of challenges and problems. It is in a spotlight that no other school would wish for. Following staff turnover of nearly the entire administration and many staff positions, the vacancies and the already-leaking boat essentially imploded in front of Alaska, leaving many stunned and questioning our state’s education priorities.

So, when did the boat, or Edgecumbe, start leaking?

During COVID, MEHS received $5.3 million dollars in funding, according to the Department of Education and Early Development.

But what did Edgecumbe spend those funds on exactly? Well, it turns out a lot of it went into temporary programs, staffing and selective support rather than one-time purchases or investments. That came back to bite the school once the funding dried up and it had to let go of teachers and staff, and remove the recreational activities paid for with COVID aid. As a result, class sizes increased and the overall quality of life for students decreased. The school was unable to afford basic supplies at the end of the 2024-25 school year, causing teachers and staff to have to improvise. This may be your first time hearing of this; well, that’s because none of it came to light, with the school ensuring that the situation was handled as calmly and effectively as possible to streamline the end of the year, preventing any panic or discourse.

Following a change in contractors for the 2025-26 school year, NANA Management Services became the main contractor for the school and took over management of the dorms and the cafeteria. Many students were skeptical and unsure of whether to place their trust in NANA or not. Thoughts on NANA among students are divided following this school year. Let’s just say that at the end of the year, students had had enough of the entire situation and organized a protest in the rain to object to certain changes being implemented without student input.

Student satisfaction with the cafeteria was extremely low at the start of the year, with concern coming from the Student Advisory Board Representative, Martin Karmun, and a cafeteria advisory council of students was formed following the beginning of the year. Still, throughout the year, students slowly warmed up to the contractor as they fine-tuned services for the students, with satisfaction being higher at the end of the year.

Edgecumbe students can take whatever’s available and make it work, just like any other Alaskan, but when the facilities are subpar, staff and teachers are being laid off and changes are being made faster than any other school year, you can expect students, especially freshmen and first-year students, to be unsatisfied and leave.

When I think of Edgecumbe, I think of a close-knit community that strives to live up to our motto to challenge, value and inspire — even through hardship, limited funding and a lack of support. Many people say Edgecumbe will close, but from my perspective, MEHS will not be closing any time soon.

But not all is bad. The future is looking bright for Edgecumbe, as the Alaska Legislature has approved millions in immediate funding for MEHS, and the funds were officially approved in the FY2027 budget, which was just signed in June.

I can’t cover everything that has, will, or could happen in one commentary, but I’m trying to make a point. Mount Edgecumbe High School isn’t just a boarding school; it’s a community and home for many. It’s a school where kids such as myself, can take advantage of the opportunity to become someone who can help change and improve our state, with an environment that encourages growth and independence.

A majority of MEHS students and I look to the future with hope, a hope that is also in every other supporter of MEHS.

Only time will tell whether Mount Edgecumbe High School can rise to the occasion.
