Why thousands of federal lawyers leaving government service matters for everyone in the justice system

More than 10,000 lawyers, many of them from the U.S. Department of Justice, have left the federal government during the second Trump administration. “Their departures show how rapidly the president has eroded the image of the federal government as the gold standard for lawyers seeking public service roles,” writes The New York Times.

Politics and legal affairs editor Naomi Schalit spoke with John E. Jones III about the mass departure of federal government lawyers, as well as other recent issues related to the Department of Justice. Jones, now the president of Dickinson College, is a retired federal judge appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate in 2002.

Schalit: What are the repercussions of this exodus of lawyers?

Jones: One thing that I could rely on as a federal judge was the professionalism of the Department of Justice, and hand in hand with that was its collective credibility.

When you have an exodus of those professionals, and when you have, unfortunately, Department of Justice attorneys going into federal courts across the country and outright misrepresenting – the stronger word is lying – to federal judges, it really creates a massive reputational problem for the department.

So “massive reputational problem for the department” means what happens between lawyers and judges. What are the on-the-ground implications of that for people who are caught up in the justice system?

It’s well to remember that the attorney general’s client – the Department of Justice’s client – is the United States of America. It is not the president of the United States, even though one would think that based on the way this president operates his administration. The mission of the Department of Justice is within its name: It’s to do justice, to uphold the rule of law, to operate without fear or favor, and to make sure its prosecutions are righteous and well founded.

There’s no question that through history we’ve had attorneys general who’ve gone off the grid, so to speak. But I don’t think there’s ever been historically as seamless an interface – in a bad way – between the president and the Department of Justice as what we see today. The president in his second term has had the attorneys general essentially do his bidding and prosecute his enemies.

Even going back to the Nixon years, Attorney General John Mitchell committed a number of acts that ended up with him spending almost 20 months in prison. But it didn’t involve selective prosecutions – it involved crimes that were largely outside his role as attorney general.

When Robert F. Kennedy was his brother John F. Kennedy’s attorney general, despite their brotherly attachment you didn’t see anything like this. In fact, history informs us that they were always concerned about conflicts and promoted the independent operation of their U.S. attorneys.

There have also been grand juries rejecting attempts by the Justice Department’s attorneys to get indictments.

That proves a couple things: that grand jurors are doing their job and being very, very clinical about issuing true bills of indictment. And also that the pervasive activities of the administration are becoming known to average citizens, and they are looking with a jaded eye toward the prosecutions that are being put in front of them. That’s happened not just in Washington, D.C., but in Chicago and other places across the country, and I would expect that to continue.

President Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Todd Blanche to be the U.S. attorney general. Blanche, a former personal lawyer for Trump, had served as acting attorney general since Trump forced out Pam Bondi. If you were advising senators in confirmation hearings for Todd Blanche, what questions would you recommend they ask?

In terms of the prosecutions of the perceived enemies of President Trump, I would want to know just how much interface and discussions there have been between the White House and the Department of Justice, including obviously the president and Mr. Blanche. I’m not sure that you would get a straight answer, but I think it’s worth asking the question. I might want to know whether he has ever refused to investigate or prosecute someone the president ordered him to target.

I’m not put off by the fact that Todd Blanche was the president’s personal lawyer. That’s fine, he has a history as a prosecutor before that, and the personal relationship doesn’t disqualify him.

A man in a suit and tie stands on a stage, listening.

I might also ask him hypotheticals where you test whether or not he could speak truth to power – specific hypotheticals about fairly evaluating a White House mandate ordering him to prosecute the president’s enemies. But if he can’t – as even attorneys general in the first administration Bill Barr and Jeff Sessions did – speak truth to power and stand up to the president and instead becomes a rubber stamp to exact revenge on behalf of the president, I think he’s fundamentally unfit for this really powerful, critical Cabinet post.

Let’s turn to another constitutional question. In reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan’s new book, they detail that there was a move to suspend habeas rights, – which allow a person detained by the government to challenge that detention – for unauthorized immigrants, although one high-level administration lawyer advised strongly against it. As a former judge, what’s your reaction to any attempt to do that?

You know that the Great Writ, as it’s called, has only been suspended about four times in the history of the country. First by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and it was found to be an unconstitutional action, although the Congress in 1863 stepped up to provide the president the power to suspend the writ during the war when “the public safety may require it.”

On the one hand, it proves that there is at least one attorney in the White House who is willing to speak truth to power. There’s simply no current basis in law or fact to suspend the writ – look at the Constitution, Article 1, Section 9, which says, “The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.”

I think the courts would stop the president if he tried to do it. The opinion that the president received from counsel was a mixture of both “You’re going to get stopped by the courts, you’re going to get engaged in litigation right away” and “This is going to look terrible if you do it.”

This would have been a quantum leap in the wrong direction had they actually endeavored to do it. Sadly, expediency regularly triumphs over the rule of law far too often in this presidency, and that puts the rights of all citizens at risk.

Cody Johnson Reveals His Workout Routine While Talking Life On The Road [Exclusive]

Cody Johnson is sharing a look at what life on the road looks like right now, and how he’s balancing a demanding touring schedule with health, recovery, and family life.

With each show, fans have come to expect the country hitmaker to deliver a high-energy performance packed with nonstop movement across the stage. Johnson tells Country Now that staying in shape is essential to keeping up that pace night after night.

When it comes to his current workout routine, Johnson says that the key is keeping things simple and consistent with both his diet and exercise while he’s on the road.

“It varies. It’s really more diet: Meat, fruit, cheese, eggs only,” he shared. “We’re doing a little yoga. I do a lot of peptides and things like that, but my gym at home is where I really do my hard workouts.”

The Texas native explains that when he has rare downtime at home, he will spend two to three hours in his own personal gym, but on the road he’s happy to be able to squeeze in a short stint of cardio.

“Me and my security guard, Jason, will get out there and as long as we get 30 minutes of good cardio or good yoga stretch or just loosening up, it really helps me on stage because…I mean, you know I don’t stand still on stage, so I really need to kind of be loosened up,” he added.

Speaking of life on tour, Cody Johnson admits it has felt “really great” to get back to his regular routine on the road, especially after having to unexpectedly take three months off in 2025 to recover from a burst eardrum.

However, there were some positives to getting that break, like getting to spend more quality time with his wife, Brandi, their two daughters Clara Mae and Cori and their baby boy, Jaycee Daniel. Then Johnson was fired up to return full steam ahead at the top of 2026.

“We had our baby boy, spent a lot of time at home, recharged my body, recharged my mind. And so we knew in January coming in, we’re going to hit the ground running. I mean, set the record at NRG Stadium this year, headlined Stagecoach for the first time, got to open for George Strait. And then also, the success at the ACMs and things like that, it’s just been a whirlwind,” he shared.

Cody Johnson is keeping the momentum going with his 2026 Live headline tour, taking him to arenas across the country. Since stepping into the larger venues, he felt a “different level of intensity” each night in the crowd

“You can see the difference with the fans,” he admitted.

After the show, Johnson takes about an hour to come down from the adrenaline rush. In this time he typically Facetimes his family, has a drink, and simply tries to decompress before doing it all again the next night.

Still, he’s not slowing down anytime soon because Johnson’s new album Banks of the Trinity is dropping Friday, June 26. Plus, his packed tour schedule is set to continue through November.

One of the standout stops on his 2026 run was Nashville’s CMA Fest, where he took the stage at Nissan Stadium on Friday, June 5. Johnson is among the star-studded lineup whose festival performances will be featured in a special three-hour broadcast airing later this week on ABC, giving fans another chance to experience the epic on-stage moments.

Co-hosted by Riley Green and Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer, CMA Fest presented by SoFi  is set to broadcast Thursday, June 25 at 8/7c on ABC and will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.

The special will feature performances from Bailey Zimmerman, Blake Shelton, The Band Perry, Brothers Osborne, Carly Pearce, Cody Johnson, Deana Carter, Ella Langley, Fetty Wap, Florida Georgia Line, Gretchen Wilson, HARDY, Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Jordan Davis, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan, Michael McDonald, Molly Tuttle, The Red Clay Strays, Ricky Skaggs, Riley Green, Russell Dickerson, Shaboozey, Shay Morgan, Stephen Wilson Jr., Tim McGraw, Tucker Wetmore, and Zach Top.

CMA Fest 2026

SoFi has been named the first-ever broadcast presenting sponsor and Official Bank of CMA Fest, joining the festival in a partnership centered on helping people pursue financial independence through music. As part of the collaboration, SoFi will highlight standout performances, including country icon Deana Carter and the live debut of Shaboozey’s new single, “Cowgirl.”

Nashville will once again welcome CMA Fest to the heart of the city next year. It’s set to take over June 10–13, 2027.

Oprah Says Whitney Houston Once Fell Off Her Stage While High

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you ever doubted that Oprah Winfrey is a good and loyal friend, let this story disabuse you of that notion:

More than a decade after Whitney Houston’s tragic death, Oprah just shared a heartbreaking story that the public never knew about.

During an appearance at the Cannes Lions Festival this week, Oprah recalled a frightening moment from Houston’s final visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009.

Singer Whitney Houston accepts the Winner of International - Favorite Artist Award onstage at the 2009 American Music Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on November 22, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.

According to the Queen of Daytime Talk, Whitney had already completed a powerful interview discussing her struggles with addiction and her hopes for the future.

But things took a troubling turn when it came time for the singer to perform.

Oprah revealed that Houston was sober when they conducted their backstage conversation before the interview.

By the time she returned to the stage to sing, however, Oprah says that had changed.

“The first interview I did with her when we’d gone behind stage and I asked about her intentions, she was clean,” Oprah recalled.

“But the day she came to my show to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage.”

The revelation stunned the audience at Cannes, as the incident was never reported at the time and remained a closely guarded secret for nearly 17 years.

Oprah explained that she immediately feared what would happen if images or videos of the fall became public.

Houston was attempting a comeback at the time, promoting her album I Look to You and openly discussing her past struggles with substance abuse.

“I knew that if that story got out that she’d fallen off the stage, that she would be completely destroyed by that,” Oprah said.

Despite the fact that audience members had cameras and could have easily shared photos, Oprah says she personally appealed to them not to do so.

“Even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures up because it would ruin her life, and they did not,” she said.

Oprah added that she doubts such a request would be honored in today’s social media landscape.

“That would not happen today, I can tell you that,” she said.

Yes, the world is a very different place in 2026, and we mostly mean that in a bad way.

These days, footage of Whitney’s stumble almost certainly would have wound up online, and the comments section would have immediately devolved into the most vile culture war nonsense.

Oprah’s compassion toward her troubled friend reminds us all of a time when Americans were generally far more empathetic than they are today — a time that we can hopefully return to someday soon.

NASCAR Power Rankings: Has Tyler Reddick Lost His Momentum?

After the inaugural race on Naval Base Coronado on a temporary street and tarmac course, NASCAR heads to its final road-course weekend. Some Cup drivers will be thankful and others will miss the opportunities these races afford them. But it’s also a time for those who might not thrive on road courses to show how much they’ve improved, like Bubba Wallace did with a second-place finish at Coronado. That allowed him to jump up on this list. The race winner, Corey Heim, isn’t running enough to be ranked here. Here are my power rankings following Coronado and heading into the event this weekend at Sonoma Raceway. Dropped out: Christopher Bell (Last Week: 7), William Byron (Last Week: 8) On the verge: Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, William Byron, Chase Elliott, Riley Herbst, Carson Hocevar Don’t look now, but Chastain has back-to-back top-10 finishes with an eighth at Pocono and a seventh at Coronado. It looks like he is finding some speed. Suárez finished 13th at Coronado. It was his seventh top-15 finish in his last eight races and he is now eighth in the series standings. Nothing flashy but steady. Jones didn’t have much speed at Coronado and still moved up one spot in the points to 14th, despite a 20th-place finish. He can’t complain too much considering he damaged the car in qualifying as he tried to find some speed. Not only did Wallace finish second on a road course, he did it coming back from two laps down following a penalty for a wheel coming off the car. He has two top-three finishes in his last three starts. Buescher has three consecutive top-10 finishes, placing a solid sixth at Coronado. And his future is set, as he has signed a contract extension at RFK Racing. Gibbs was 15th at the Coronado and remained fifth in the series standings. He needs to have a good Sonoma to start building momentum for the final two months of the regular season. Blaney earned his fifth consecutive top-10 finish with a ninth at Coronado. He is third in the series standings. Reddick got out-dueled by teammate Corey Heim over the final laps at Coronado while also doing what he felt was the right thing to do as he gave up a potential pass on Heim because he had gotten into him unintentionally. That contact resulted in a flat and Reddick finished a disappointing 25th. Larson is known for doing special things but he hasn’t been doing anything particularly special lately. He finished third at Coronado, his third consecutive top-five finish. Hamlin will take 14th on a road course, as he cut into Reddick’s points lead. He now trails Reddick by just eight points. If Reddick had out-dueled Heim, Reddick would be in this spot. But the margin of error is tiny, especially on road courses.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports

Jelly Roll Surprises Loyal Fan With Lifetime Concert Tickets In Moment She Calls A Sign From Her Late Best Friend

What started as another night in the crowd quickly became a moment this longtime Jelly Roll fan will never forget.

Lauryn has attended around seven of the country music superstar’s live shows over the past few years, but she has been listening to his music since 2017. Over the weekend she once again found her way to the very front row of his concert at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford, NH and this time, Jelly Roll took notice.

He paused the entire set as soon as he spotted her familiar face in the audience and acknowledged her dedication.

“This lady right here, make sure she never buys a ticket to a show again. This is like the 6th show I’ve seen her at,” Jelly Roll said as he pointed her out.

While his comments may have initially sounded like a warning, Jelly Roll was actually rewarding the fan for her loyalty. After recognizing her from multiple stops on the tour, he promised she’d be able to attend any shows she wanted to in the future at no cost.

“You will never buy another ticket to my concert, ever,” he restated. “We will take care of that tonight. This is like the fifth time I’ve seen you on this tour. Thank you this is so awesome,” he told her.

The Tennessee native jokingly added that he would have to change up his set list just so that she doesn’t continue to hear the exact same show every time.

@laurynrou I am OVER THE MOON thank you so so so much @Jelly Roll I know my best friend who passed on 12/24/21 is always with me. I spoke to her and said “if you’re with me tonight please get him to sign my book” I full on believe this is a sign from her. I cried. I thought I was going to puke and pass out. Best night of my life. #concert #jellyroll #fyp #repost #love ♬ original sound – Lauryn Roussel

Following the heartfelt interaction, Lauryn tells Country Now that a security guard took down her contact information and later texted her details on how to contact the team before future shows and be added to the guest list.

“I honestly thought I was going to pass out. He is one of my favorite artists and I’ve been to a ton of shows of other artist and not a single one has done something like this,” she explained.

As if the moment wasn’t memorable enough, Jelly Roll also signed a poster she had brought with her to the concert, something she’d been hoping would happen after years of attending his shows. This experience carried an even deeper meaning for Lauryn as she believes it was a sign from her late friend who would have been attending all these concerts right by her side if she was still around today.

“People will call me crazy and it’s not for everyone, but I saw a medium a few months back, I did not tell her a single thing prior and she had said something about someone is always with me and it’s the person I used to do a whole bunch of things with (my best friend) she even brought up Jelly Roll in the reading,” she recalled.

Lauryn goes on to explain that while getting ready for the memorable Jelly Roll concert she decided to speak to her best friend who has passed on and asked for her help in achieving her goal for the night.

“I said to my best friend, ‘if you are going to be with me tonight help me get a signature’ that’s all I’ve been looking for for all these shows was his signature. He turned around and gave me these lifetime passes and still signed my poster.”

She added, “I feel as though J brings me closer to my best friend and she is forever missed and if she was here she would be at all these concerts with me.”

Jelly Roll’s Little Ass Shed Tour continues tonight (June 23) with a show in Syracuse, NY. In between his own tour and festival dates, the genre-bending star also has a few more shows with Post Malone as part of The Big Ass Stadium Tour Part 2.

Brandi Glanville: Doctors Found a Tumor in My Face!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This miserable saga doesn’t seem to end.

Just last month, Brandi Glanville revealed that her face is “sinking” again after she’d believed that she’d found the cure — and the culprit.

Now, she has found what could be either a symptom or a cause of her facial disfigurement.

The bad news is that it’s a tumor.

On her podcast, Brandi Glanville shared the news of her tumor diagnosis. (Image Credit: YouTube)

It’s a tumor ‘in one of my lymph nodes’

During a recent episode of her Unfiltered podcast, Brandi opened up about her diagnosis.

She shared that she has been diagnosed with a facial tumor.

Though Brandi’s tumor is thankfully benign, that is a technical term for its growth pattern — not for how it impacts her life.

In the wrong place, a benign tumor can be potentially fatal.

According to Brandi, the tumor has grown “in one of my lymph nodes in my face.”

The tumor may be playing a role in her ongoing facial disfigurement battle, which has now been going on for years.

“That could be why the fluid is going around my face,” Brandi suggested.

She desperately wishes to be able to go back to having a normal life. Well, normal for Brandi, anyway.

“I can wear makeup for, like, 15 minutes and then I have to take it off,” she then revealed.

Even if she is no longer experiencing tooth-destroying drainage (a symptom that we hope never returns),

‘I haven’t had a facelift yet’

According to Brandi, some doctors had previously dismissed what should have been a tumor diagnosis.

She said that they dismissed it as “just scar tissue.”

Brandi objected to that theory, asking what may be a very obvious question.

“From what?” she asked. “I haven’t had a facelift yet.”

Too many, it seems, have assumed that Brandi’s face is a “botched” cosmetic procedure. And she has paid the price.

Unfortunately, Brandi Glanville cannot really glam up with her facial symptoms. Not for more than a few minutes at a time. (Image Credit: YouTube)

Brandi explained that she only got this diagnosis when she saw a dermatologist who specializes in cancer.

She said that a blood test “came back” with the tumor results.

“It’s been a long three years,” Brandi lamented.

She added: “I just want to put a ton of makeup on again, get my hair extensions. I want to have a glow-up.”

We hope that she’s able to address all of her health issues. She deserves to live her life again.
