Lawsuit aims to put sunflower sea stars on endangered species list

A healthy sunflower sea star is seen on the seafloor in 2014. Sunflower sea stars are important for fish habitat because they eat sea urchins, which can mow down kelp forests if left unchecked. A wasting disease that struck more than a decade ago wiped out about 90% of the population, with the most severe losses in the southern part of the species’ range, off Mexico and California. An environmental group has sued the Trump administration over its failure to grant Endangered Species Act protections to sunflower sea stars, a keystone Pacific Ocean species that lost 90% of its population since 2013 to a wasting disease.

The Center for Biological Diversity, in its lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accused the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of illegally delaying endangered and threatened listings for the giant sea stars.

NOAA’s Fisheries Service in 2023 proposed listing the species as threatened across its entire range, which stretches from Baja California to Alaska. That proposal stemmed from a petition the Center for Biological Diversity filed in 2021.

However, NOAA Fisheries has missed legally the legally mandated 12-month deadline for issuing a rule, thus violating the Endangered Species Act, the lawsuit said.

“The agency’s failure to meet the deadline delays crucial protections for the sunflower sea star, increasing its risk of extinction,” the lawsuit said.

Sunflower sea stars are among the world’s biggest sea stars, growing up 3 feet across and with as many as 24 arms. The multicolored sea stars are important to marine habitats and fisheries because they eat sea urchins that, if left unchecked, can mow down kelp forests that fish need.

The wasting disease, which turns sea stars to glutinous blobs, has been most severe in the southern part of the sunflower sea star’s range. In California, the species is considered functionally extinct, according to the California Ocean Protection Council. Remnant populations remain in farther-north waters, though the wasting disease has caused massive die-offs in the northern part of the range. In Alaska, hotspots for the wasting disease, which affects sunflower sea stars and other species, included the Kenai Peninsula’s Kachemak Bay and Katmai National Park and Preserve along the Alaska Peninsula.

“These incredible many-armed sea stars have taken a huge hit from climate change and obviously need protection, but for years federal officials haven’t acted,” Miyoko Sakashita, oceans program director at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement. “It’s been painful to watch disease spread among the species as the ocean warms. We need to jump in and do everything we can to save these gorgeous sea stars. The Trump administration has a clear legal duty to take action on these amazing animals.”

A NOAA spokesperson said the agency has been working on the listing and continues to do so.

“At this time, NOAA Fisheries has not yet completed our work on the Center for Biological Diversity’s proposal to list the sunflower sea star under the Endangered Species Act,” Micheal Milstein said by email. “NOAA Fisheries continues to optimize its available resources to prioritize mission-critical research and actions to address fisheries management and endangered species responsibilities. NOAA remains dedicated to providing information, research and resources that serve the American public and ensure our nation’s economic and environmental resilience.”

New research findings

Recent research has shed light on the progression of wasting disease and possible ways to counter it.

A large research team led by the University of British Columbia, the University of Washington and the Hakai Institute last year identified the culprit in the massive wasting disease die-off: a bacterium called Vibrio pectenicida.

Climate change is implicated as a factor in the disease-caused death, the researchers said. Wasting disease deaths are most concentrated in warmer waters, suggesting that warmer temperatures have caused Vibrio pectenicida to proliferate, the researchers said. They point to the way warmer temperatures encourage the growth of other vibrio species, including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which can cause gastrointestinal sickness to seafood eaters — and which has become a concern for Alaska oyster growers.

Even if warmer temperatures do not directly cause Vibrio pectenicida to proliferate, the UBC researchers said, the presence of the bacteria could be an additional stressor to the sea stars on top of climate change.

In its lawsuit, the Center for Biological Diversity characterized climate change as part of a suite of compounded threats.

“Sunflower sea stars are also at risk from ocean acidification, which can make it more difficult for them to build their skeletal structures. Sunflower sea stars are also threatened by coastal development and pollution, harmful algal blooms, and other forms of habitat loss,” the lawsuit said.

There is other ongoing research that points to possible tools to help sunflower sea stars recover.

Scientists at the University of Washington and in California have been experimenting with captive breeding of sunflower sea stars, with the idea of bolstering or reestablishing wild populations.

The California project, funded by NOAA Fisheries, the Nature Conservancy and other organizations, is also studying sunflower sea star DNA to better understand the genetic diversity to keep a wild population resilient.

The University of Washington researchers have also found through lab experimentation that juvenile sunflower sea stars can withstand warm temperatures, a positive sign for possible restoration of wild populations in the future. The results of that experiment are described in a study published last year in the journal PLOS One.

Bailey Zimmerman Issues Statement After Criminal Charges, Says He’s ‘Taking This Legal Matter Seriously’

Bailey Zimmerman is speaking out after criminal charges were filed against him in the state of New Mexico following an alleged incident in which he reportedly destroyed a hotel room, causing an estimated $16,000 in damages.

In a statement obtained by TMZ, Zimmerman apologized to both the Pueblo of Sandia, a federally recognized Indian Tribe, and his fans, and said he is “taking this legal matter seriously.”

“First things first, I want to apologize to the Pueblo of Sandia and to everyone at Sandia Resort & Casino. I never meant for any of this to come across as disrespectful. I am deeply sorry for my actions that transpired,” Zimmerman began. “I respect your community and the hospitality and appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to perform on Native Land. I take full accountability for everything that happened and I am sorry to anyone who feels hurt or disrespected.”

Zimmerman also expressed regret over the events that led to him canceling his performance, acknowledging that he let fans down both by his actions and the cancellation.

“To my fans who bought tickets and showed up expecting a performance, I am so sorry, you deserved better from me. I understand that being a musician comes with big responsibilities, both on and off stage, and I know that I fell short that day. I am reflecting on the disappointment and concern that I caused,” he continued.

“I am taking this legal matter seriously. I am committed to doing the work necessary to learn and grow. Thank you to my fans for holding me accountable and for understanding that I am human. I do not take your support for granted.”

TMZ first reported that a warrant had been issued for Zimmerman’s arrest in New Mexico, where he is facing both felony and misdemeanor charges.

The charges stem from an incident on May 27 at the amphitheater at Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque, where Zimmerman allegedly went on a “bender” and later “trashed” his hotel room. He subsequently canceled his scheduled performance that night and was removed from the resort.

Reports also allege the singer appeared intoxicated throughout the evening and behaved erratically during soundcheck, including “stumbling, falling, and acting belligerently,” as well as throwing equipment.

Zimmerman, 26, allegedly stormed off stage and, while being transported back to the resort, spit in the direction of a security officer and complained about being driven in a white SUV instead of a black one. He was later returned to the resort, where he reportedly continued stumbling and had to be supported by a member of his team while walking through a hallway.

The resort ultimately asked him to leave, prompting law enforcement to be called to escort him off the property.

According to documents, housekeeping staff later discovered the hotel room had been significantly damaged, with estimated losses exceeding $16,000. Reported damage included a television, phone, coffee table, and two chairs, along with a hole in one wall, additional property damage throughout the room, carpet stains, and two missing chairs.

The hotel also alleges Zimmerman charged more than $400 in alcohol to the room that was never paid. Court documents state that both resort staff and law enforcement attempted to reach Zimmerman and his team, but were reportedly unsuccessful, which ultimately led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

Zimmerman canceled that night’s performance, as well as a scheduled show in Rohnert Park, California on May 30, later telling fans he was ill and unable to perform.

Why Did Ronaldo Say ‘I’m Back’ After Portugal’s Win? ‘So People Don’t Forget’

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments on Tuesday by scoring two goals in Portugal’s match against Uzbekistan. 41-year-old Ronaldo made history in the sixth minute when João Cancelo crossed it to him, and he shot with his right foot to make it 1-0. He ran toward the bench and celebrated with his teammates after the score. He scored again in the 39th minute when he got a pass from Bruno Fernandes and scored with his right foot just inside the near post to make the score 3-0. The goals make him the second-oldest player to score at a World Cup behind Cameroon forward Roger Milla, who was 42 when he scored at the 1994 tournament in the United States. Following his second goal, Ronaldo delivered a simple message: “I’m back.” Ronaldo repeated the message after the final whistle. “It’s so people don’t forget,” Ronaldo said postgame when asked about his comments. Ronaldo’s came after the criticism he received for his performance in Portugal’s first group stage match, in which he was held scoreless and Portugal settled for a shocking 1-1 draw against DR Congo. But for Zlatan Ibrahimović, Ronaldo had no reason to respond. “I thought he never left, I don’t know why he says ‘I’m back,'” Ibrahimović said. Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the only men in history to play in six World Cup tournaments this year. Ronaldo’s scoring streak started in his debut in 2006, and he also netted goals in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. While he shares the record for most tournaments with Messi, he stands alone in scoring a goal in each edition after Messi failed to score a goal at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. “It’s always good to break records, but the most important is help the team and get our objectives,” Ronaldo said in the mixed zone on Tuesday. “God helps whoever works. I knew my teammates would help me too “It was a dark week difficult week. It seemed like I was retired from football, but I’m holding because I believe in work. Its was difficult, I can confess, but we are back.”” Ronaldo’s goals Tuesday gave him 10 career goals in the tournament. Messi has 18 after a hat trick in Argentina’s opener against Algeria and two more goals Monday against Austria that made him the all-time leading scorer in tournament history. Tuesday’s game was the 230th of Ronaldo’s international career, which is the most in history. “I’m very happy but the most important is the work that team did and our confidence in us,” Ronaldo said. “We battled with a lot during the week and and we knew that would happen but the team did well and we got better.” This is likely to be the final World Cup for Ronaldo, who won the European Championship with Portugal in 2016 and the Champions League five times with Manchester United and Real Madrid. Reading Time: 2 minutes

Big Tigger, the longtime Atlanta radio personality and former host of BET’s Rap City, has been arrested on battery and child cruelty charges.

According to Fulton County Jail records, Tigger — whose real name is Darian Morgan — was taken into custody on Saturday and booked on charges of battery and third-degree cruelty to children.

He was later released after posting a $10,000 bond.

The arrest comes just weeks after Morgan’s wife, Alicia Brown, publicly accused him of physically assaulting her during a domestic dispute.

Brown shared photos and videos on social media that appeared to show injuries she allegedly sustained during the incident. According to previous reports, she was later transported to a hospital for treatment.

At the time, Morgan strongly denied the allegations.

His attorney told TMZ that the claims being made against the radio host were false.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the charges filed this weekend stem from the same alleged incident involving Brown.

For now, many details remain unclear.

What is known is that Morgan, a fixture in Atlanta radio and a familiar face to hip-hop fans from his years hosting Rap City, is now facing serious criminal charges that could have significant legal consequences.

On June 12, Morgan shared a social media post in which he addressed the allegations made by Brown.

“I want to say categorically these allegations and accusations that have been circulating about me are false, untrue, not happening, didn’t happen,” he said.

Neither Morgan nor his representatives have publicly commented on the arrest since the charges were filed.

On Monday, Morgan took to social media to share a message reading, “Life is a cruel teacher… She loves to give you the test first, and the lesson later.”

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Ronaldo Is Back: 4 Takeaways From Portugal’s Blowout Win vs. Uzbekistan At The World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo is the last major star to arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the legendary Portugal striker made an emphatic statement on Tuesday with two goals in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan at Houston Stadium. The win moved Portugal to four points in Group K and closer to a spot in the round of 32. On the flip side, tournament debutants Uzbekistan has now lost its first two games and looks to be heading home after its group stage finale. Ronaldo and Portugal will next take on Colombia on Saturday in a game that will decide its group. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, will look for its first win or point against DR Congo. But first, here are four takeaways from Portugal vs. Uzbekistan: 1. Ronaldo Off And Running This World Cup has been all about the stars delivering. Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Mohamed Salah have all scored multiple goals for their countries so far. But all eyes in this game were on Cristiano Ronaldo as he looked to join his rivals on the scoreboard. People did not have to wait long as Ronaldo scored an impressive goal in the sixth minute when right back João Cancelo moved down the flank and cut the ball back in the middle of the box for Ronaldo, who then was able to hit a shot inside the near post. Then in the 39th minute, Ronaldo bagged his second of the game when he made a run to get behind Uzbekistan’s backline and was on the end of a brilliant pass from Bruno Fernandes, his former Manchester United teammate. It was his staggering 145th international goal for Portugal and his 10th at the World Cup. Getting Ronaldo going at this tournament was a major priority for Portugal, as he had failed to score in his last 10 major tournament appearances, a span that had lasted over five years. That drought extends to 13 games when not including penalties. Even at age 41, Ronaldo remains critical to Portugal’s plans. In 2025, Ronaldo scored eight goals in nine appearances for Portugal. But now, he is off and running at the 2026 World Cup, which ends the criticism that he is struggling in major tournaments or that he has fallen behind other elite players who have all scored multiple goals in this tournament. Ronaldo is right there with them. Portugal is in much better shape now with Ronaldo off and running. 2. Fullbacks And Fernandes Drove Attack While Ronaldo was the top story of this game as the finisher of two of Portugal’s goals, Portugal’s attack was driven by its two fullbacks out wide along with Bruno Fernandes, who was instrumental in the middle. On the first goal, Barcelona right back Cancelo made a strong burst down the right side to find Ronaldo in the box. In the first half, Cancelo had 47 touches while completing 27/28 of his passes to be a major creator for Portugal. Likely due to rotation, he was removed at halftime. On the left side, it was Nuno Mendes, who was very effective in controlling that side of the field. Fresh off winning his second straight Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain, Mendes scored the Portuguese goal on a free kick that fooled everyone in the stadium. The expectation was that Ronaldo was going to take the kick, but Mendes was the surprising taker and had an opening to beat Uzbekistan keeper Abduvohid Nematov. But Mendes was on the ball all the time, with 98 touches in the game, and he was very aggressive in keeping Uzbekistan pinned back. Then in the middle, it was Fernandes who was running the offense, switching the points of attack, and then assisting Ronaldo on the team’s third goal. Behind them, Vitinha sat deeper and constantly served as the transition between defense and offense. With such ability on either side of the field and in the middle, it stretched the Uzbekistan defense and gave Ronaldo room to score. 3. Learning Lesson For Uzbekistan Uzbekistan’s first World Cup will be short. It was always an uphill climb after drawing both Colombia and Portugal in its group. The country’s federation tried to incorporate experienced leadership when it hired former Italy captain and Ballon d’Or-winning defender Fabio Cannavaro to lead the team, but ultimately the task at this tournament was too much. The first two opponents were simply way too strong. The good news is that despite this lopsided loss, this experience should only benefit these Uzbek players and improve the sport within the country. Soccer is strong in the Asian federation. South Korea and Australia have played well at the World Cup. Iran drew Belgium in its last game and Saudi Arabia drew Uruguay. The goal for Uzbekistan should be to consistently improve within AFC competitions. The country is ambitious and in 2022, the government announced it completing building 3,500 mini-football fields in the country. That was a project that began in 2017. The full national team is a mainstay in the knockout rounds of the AFC Asian Cup and its youth setup is surging, having won the AFC U-20 championship in 2023 and the U-17 championship in 2025. In 2024, Uzbekistan qualified for the Olympics. This World Cup will be short for Uzbekistan, but the team fought hard, and it is another step forward for the country’s program that has been making progress. 4. Martinez Faces Choices Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has questions when putting together his lineup for the group stage finale against Colombia. After the disappointing 1-1 draw with DR Congo, Martinez made one big change when he dropped Real Madrid’s Bernado Silva for João Félix. But Colombia will be the team’s biggest test in the group stage, and it will decide Group K. Martinez has so many ways he can play that game. If he opts for a combination of power and speed, he can start Rafael Leao, who scored the final goal.  If he wants power, he could bring Silva back. There are many ways he can approach every game. Martinez has frequently stressed that no player is guaranteed a spot and this team has enough talent to give him options. Now with the team playing well, the competition will be tough on the players to earn minutes. In the pre-tournament friendlies, Martinez showed his team’s depth when he used all 26 of his players in wins over Nigeria and Chile. The game against Colombia might be what he considers to be his starting lineup in what is a team that could go far at this World Cup.Latest Sports News from FOX Sports
